How To Sing Like Lou Gramm - Foreigner - Ken Tamplin Vocal Academy
Lou Gramm has been probably the biggest vocal influence to me of any singer and today I'm going to show you what it takes to sing like Lou.
Lou is the kind of singer who could just be right out front and doesn't need a lot of hoopla because his voice just carries the band.
Able to sing in about 3 and half octaves, Lou's golden voice and his phenomenal pitch, paired with his great melodic choices really distinguish his music.
Though his high range is tough to sing, I'm going to break down how he's able to compress air in the abdomen and hit those snappy phrases like he does.
I'll be showing you a few examples of me taking on some of Lou's classics as I demonstrate how to properly use mask and teach you how to get that big, round tone.
I hope you find the video to be helpful and please be sure to let me know what you thought in the comments section.

No one can sing like Lou Gramm , its not only his voice but his emotional approach.. he is untouchable. Thx for bringing his name out once more.
Rock on!
Absolutely
Use to,after his surgery and medication just tore up his singing abilities what a shame!
@@Mikeblenker53 for his age, and especially all he's been thru that you touched on, if you listen to his most recent LIVE "without a net or autotune" performances with his band, Lou sounded great, a lot like his 80's Lou. Just, understandably less POWER delivery than 45 YEARS AGO 😎
I ( we all ? ) really wish him well. He was so gracious sharing lead vocals with Kelly Hansen at the Foreigner 40 reunion performance. One helluva fight, for life, and back up to fronting his own, and the original legendary, Foreigner.✌
One of my favorites on one of their discs/albums is their cover of Lovemaker they did live
Lou Gramm is one of the best vocalists ever. He's just spot on as a technical singer but he brings the emotion.
I agree with you, Brian. He's a favorite of mine.
@@kentamplin It always bothered me how Lou was treated by the band after his brain surgery. Foreigner with Lou was a great band but they were just ordinary without him.
Lou IS the absolute best voice in Rock!!!
Lou just had a tremendous R/B and Soul vocabulary.
Agree, Lou’s tone is exceptional.
Lou is definitely one of my top all time favorite male rock singers
Mine too!
No one sings like Lou. 1 in a million. No way to truly dissect his technique.
Proud to say Lou Gramm lives near me. Stlll never met him, but he really is phenomenal & I am a fan. Great video.
Very cool!
Good Job Ken , well done . Lou Gramm is a legend
Sure is!
I can't even hit that high! My throat hurts just watching this video. Great job!!!
Thanks for watching!
It gives you a lot of respect for Lou when someone tries to hit the notes that he did, seemingly easily, and Ken is damn good.
I'm off work today and Ken drops a vid on how to sing like Lou Gramm. Some days are better than others.
Not bad for a Monday, eh? Rock on, Robb!
Yes Lou still the best original thanks ken ...
Rock on!
My favorite vocal performance of Lou Gramm is "I Don't Want to Live without You." I love his smooth, understated crooning on that song.
Who doesn't love Lou!!?
His tone was out of this world 🌎, so smooth and magical ✨✨✨
For sure!
I'm so happy you covered Lou Gramm because he is also my favourite singer and in my opinion, the greatest voice i've ever heard in rock and YOUR voice is incredible Ken !
Wow! Thanks so much!
@@kentamplin Ken, your voice is EPIC. Love it. could listen to you sing all day
Lou Gramm absolutely my fave saw him live in Lakeland florida during the Wanna know what love is crazeeeeeeeee
Awesome, JD M!
Dude that was AWESOME! My fav's as well. Steve Walsh, John Wait, Tommy Shaw, Bobby Kimball. They just don't make 'em like that anymore. Lou is champ! STILL managed to come back after the serious heath complications.
Lou was utterly fantastic 🥰😍
Rock on!
Lou's singing is incredible and his range is unbelievable. Ken your're on 🔥!!
Oh my goodness! Jukebox Hero!
Saw them in concert in Houston a couple of times in the late 70's.
Rock on!
Lou is one of my favorite voices 👌
Mine too! Thanks for listening!
Shadow king!! I loved hearing him on his solo stuff also! !
He's so great! Love him!
Jukebox hero is still one of my favorite songs! You killed it Ken
Thanks, Jett. Glad you enjoyed it!
Old guys rule what does the rest of it say? Lou is awesome! You rocked it ken!
Ah yes my favorite singer! He hits those high notes like no other!
Indeed! 👍
Lou gramm is one of the best vocalist ever and you do such an amazing job ken ,you surprise me everytime with how high your vocal range can go
Thanks so much, Jamie! I sure appreciate that!
Love Lou's voice. I always think that guys like Lou and Steve Perry must be so exhausted at the end of a night. Singing that well is not easy...screaming is easy.
Indeed! Two of the best!
I was fortunate enough to see Foreigner,9 times ,In the 80s and into the 90s ,Lou had a voice ,man did he have a voice ,I'm catching up ,but so glad you did a video about Lou ,and you have a great voice ya self, not bad for a Old Timer ,I'm right there with ya ,your fortunate you don't have to hear my voice ,...THANK YOU KEN!,...ROCK ON BROTHER!!!
Am I an old timer? I don't feel like an old timer... Foreigner is great, glad you enjoyed the song.
Lou Gramm is an incredible singer!! i can't get enough of listening to "I wanna know what love is" 😊🤩🤩
I'm not surprised that a great vocal coach like you appreciates his greatness 👊
I love him!
I knew there was a reason why I enjoy hearing you sing! I have loved Lou Gramm since the 70,s and he is my absolute favorite rock singer and I absolutely swoon when he sings a ballad! I thank God that I was able to meet him last year!
🎯💯🔥Lou's voice did carry the band!!!
Lou is great! Love him!
Lou is epic, and you do a great job. Wish there were more like him, especially these days!
So do I, Beaux!
I love Foreigner! Lou Gramm is awesome! Thanks for showcasing him and giving your insights on what makes him great.
I'm glad you enjoyed it, Judie!
Oh man, I love Lou’s voice!
So do I! 💜
Great job.
Goosebumps. I love your voice Ken
I think I was 12 when Foreigner 4 came out. That's a masterpiece
Damn Ken !!! You not only nailed his style, but if I closed my eyes, at times I could swear I was listening to a 1970's Lou Grammatica. !!! Awesome. Major props for the way you've given Lou the credit he deserves. Awesome analysis as always. I learn so much from these. Thanks for doing them !!!
Lou Gramm is my favorite singer in rock, too, Ken! He's very under rated! Look like I'm in good company! Rock on!
The thing that differentiates him from most hard Rock and especially heavy metal singers who use head voice a lot and masking is that he does it with depth and soul. I haven't heard anyone quite like him somehow his high notes r fat and have depth and don't come off nasally. He's old school meets the beginning of new school and simply the Best 💜
Lou has been my favorite singer of all time. I just looove his voice! I'm really enjoying your channel and so glad I stumbled across it. Your voice is amazing also Ken!
Rock on!
i am i die hard LOU fan from Rochester NY i had the pleasure to not only meet Lou but me and my cousin did the tile work in his house yes i was in awe its was the greatest job we've had ever done together I have that memory banked, checked off a box on bucket list for me Rev on Red Line brings me back home when i hear it
Agree, he's awesome!
He is!!
@@kentamplin If only I could sing like him.. would be awesome! Sadly, my voice is a little girly..😅

Wow Ken fantastic job on singing this. I love Lou Gramm.
So do I!
Thanks for showcasing this Ken. Lou Gramm and Foreigner were the soundtracks of my teenage years and still rate him as one of the best singers, period. Respect to anyone that takes the time to listen and study this body of work, as they'll learn a lot and enjoy some amazing songs.
My pleasure!
Ken, My biggest influence as well. I really believe trying (really hard) to sing these songs all these years in and of themselves helped me improve as a singer. His songs are challenging and continue to be.
Yes indeed! Keep on rockin'!
Ken, you nailed the Lou's voice. Awesome singing on Juke Box Hero! What a challenging song. I am 56 years old. I grew up on Foreigner. Lou is an awesome humble dude. I still need to order his book Juke Box Hero. Lou has quite a story.
I must compliment you Ken you friggin Rocked it! 👍💥👊
Thanks so much!
Lou is a beast and your voice really shines on this review
Hey Ken, Lou actually grew up in Gates, N.Y. just down the street from me. He was just amazing
One of my earliest vocal inspirations. Foreigner were absolutely unstoppable in their heyday. His voice was so unique.
💜💜💜
Lou Gramm é incomparável!❤️❤️❤️❤️
Rock on!
Ken, you knocked it out of the park, wow! What a great voice you have! Thank you for showcasing Loi Gramm, which in my opinion, is a top three, if not the top rock vocalist ever. What's so special about Lou is not is amazing voice, but he put his heart and soul into every song. I am also a big fan of Steve Perry, John Waite, Brad Delp and Mickey Thomas. The current generation does not have a clue of the amaging singers we had growing up in the 70s, 80s and 90s. Foreigner is not what it is, without Lou's amazing vocals! His solo albums and Shadow King days are pure gold as well. So glad Lou and the original Foreigner lineup are being inducted in the RRHOF!
Ken, would love to hear you tackle Just Between You and Me. One of Gramm's best vocals in my opinion. So underrated. He's right up there with Perry, DeYoung, and Shaw for me from that era. Plus, he brought it live.
Thanks for the suggestion!
Great tribute in some way to Lou's ever best soulness rock voice. Thanks for sharing some of his unique capability/technics
Thanks for listening! Rock on!
Lou reminds me of my daddy playin forener LP s on early Saturday morning s to get pumped up before work
😀👍
I heard Lou Gramm wasn't a fan of doing ballads I heard some guy saying that Lou Gramm said to the guys were a rock band not a ballad band but I'm glad lou did ballads he sounded great on them Ken the ballads are some of my favorites
Thanks for the info, Cade.
Your welcome thought I'd tell you Ken that's what I've heard
"I Wanna Know What Love Is"....superb, Ken. Really great!!
Glad you enjoyed it, Valli!
I know I've said it Ken but yes Lou Gramm is awesome he's the best in my opinion the dude rocks how can people not like Lou Gramm of they are into to rock music Lou Gramm is total awesome he was very versital he had great vocal tones I'm glad Ken me and you appreciate Lou Gramm great demonstrations Ken singing like him I like your version of jukebox hero Ken you nailed it love the demonstrations man you rock and Lou Gramm rocks 👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍
Thanks so much, Cade. Sure appreciate that!
Your welcome so much Ken it's my pleasure you rock and Lou Gramm rocks
I love Woman in Black, I'm Gonna Win, Night Life, (Some of my favorite lesser known Foreigner Tracks) and ALL of the stuff he did with Black Sheep before Foreigner. "No Worry No Pain" and "Let Me Stay" are just brilliant. You probably know all about these songs but for anyone who's a Lou Fan and doesn't know. Go Look up Black Sheep. Lou is the Man! Thanks Ken!
Absolutely, guitarheroguy5!
I cannot agree more.
Such a fantastic job you did on those songs. Sometimes you had a particular phrase or melody line right on spot with Lou that sounded just like like him.
Ken, you are a tremendous singer and can cover such a wide range of styles and sounds. I don’t think people understand just how difficult and challenging that can be and you pull it off like pro!! Incredible singing and an incredible teacher. The best channel for voice, education and entertainment all in one!!!
Thanks so much!
My whole family never sang happy birthday in public. You are so great I could never sing even in lessons.I can write and play instruments singing no way.
I am going to send my ex your podcast.
great choice Ken. Lou is just the cream of the crop.
He sure is! Thanks for listening, Heather!
Lou is probably my favorite 80s singer. Foreigner was/is one kickass band and honestly I feel they changed the Rock Game. You definitely have the chops to do these fabulous songs justice. Midnight Blue and That was yesterday 🤘🏻 I know I have mentioned it before but being a Bass I don’t know how I could ever sing songs like this
Dang! that note at the end. SMOKING!
Thanks for watching, Michael!
Lou gramm sooper dope
I think so!
@@kentamplin any thoughts on a reaction from pantera?
@@benmetzloff9124 Possibly... 😀
Always thought his voice is gonna crack any minute, but it never did. Shame serious illness stopped his transition into a mature aged vocal. Almost felt like he went away for a while and lost it. Great to see he has regained a solid voice, as well as healing a wound or two with the band. Outstanding review of Grammatico BTW. Rock on Ken🤘✝
Thanks for listening, Barry!
This is not ken tamplin its lou gramm using kens voice, ken that looked like hard work. But you dang sure pulled it off and used some great numbers to demonstrate. Wow.definetly learned a lot about lou gramm that just slipped by my ears and mind before.thank you. God bless you he gave you a tremendous voice.
Thanks, Wes!
Absolutely agree😊
SHEEEEIT. Gramm one of the best ever.
He is the best singer love him love him love him
Lou is one of my favorites, ever! You did an awesome job 💙
Thank you so much!
Wow Ken , I got to Juke box hero . Hats off to you brother . Sounds fantastic . Thanks for schooling the average person like myself who grew up just listing to this great music and never giving it a second thought how it was lyrically crafted by an artist . I guess that is where the true raw art comes into existance from just an idea . I never thought of it that way . thanks for the light bulb switch on moment .
Ken, was looking at Foreigner and landed here. Man, YOU can sing. If I ever have to sing a song (daughter's wedding), you're the dude for the job - that's if you can stop laughing! My best . . .
Hello, my name is Patricio, I am from Ecuador, congratulations, great reaction to this great singer, there is an Ecuadorian named Mar Rendon, she is 19 years old and has an incredible voice, one of the songs that is playing a lot in Latin America and she is invited to the Latin Plug 2022 in NY in November "Laura is not here" . He also sings in English and Korean
Say You Will...man, that's one of my favorites! I also remember back in my youth this group would do these skits in our church with 'I Want to Know What Love Is' playing. (believe they were from Emmanual college in GA). But his vocals, of course that song, are so powerful.
you did a great job singing Lou Gramm. and yes I know all those songs. growing up in the 70's and 80's was the greatest time.
Sure was! Thanks for listening!
I love foreigner. U do an amazing job singing it.
Thanks so much!
This brought tears to my eyes. Thank you. You have a great voice!
I am a huge Lou Gramm fan and follower of his music from his days with Foreigner and his solo career such as Lost Boys soundtrack through too Shadow Kings and the Lou Gramm Band album.
11:58 Wow. Thanks for sharing your talent Ken.
Thanks for listening!
I have learned that Lou G. is probably one of the best. Thank you for the video!
He is! Thanks for listening!
Lou is great. I am particularly a fan of his work in Shadow King. Have you heard it, Ken? Vivian Campbell on guitars, awesome!
I sure have! Thanks for mentioning it, Fernando!
SUPER. NAIL ON THE HEAD! LOU WOKE ME UP! ROCKED ME THROUGH MY VOCAL CHANGES AS A TEEN.

Blowing chunks! LOL! BTW, great job! I love Lou Gramm, John Waite, David Coverdale, Paul Rodgers, and Ken Tamplin! Keep 'em coming, please!
Thanks! Will do!
Excellent covers of Lou! I like the restraint you showed here.
Nice, it's obvious that no one sings like Lou, but your version was spot on. Excellent! Very hard song to sing and you nailed it. Thanks for sharing.
Sure takes me back Ken!
One of my old fav’s from my day!
Thank you for your channel I really enjoy it!
It’s nice to hear music from my day, and someone else that remembers too!
Glad you enjoy it!
Took you long enough to do this vid lol. For real though, love Lou Gramm. Thank you for this insight.
Thanks for listening! Rock on!
Lou Graham is probably my favorite male vocalist
he was the only influenced right from the beginning of me singing, Hey ken wanted to say i like your shirt.
Hey, thanks, BLACK!
This video needs more than 22k views.
Wow, just ran across your channel and I gotta say I AM IMPRESSED!! I'm 59yo now and I have been in bands all of my life (guitarist/writer) and I would have done just about anything to work with a vocalist with your abilities!!
One of my favorite singers. You do him great justice. I try to hit those notes and I loose my breath.
You have a crisp clear and clean voice. Outstanding
I understand! 😀
@@kentamplin wow Ken you're awesome 🥰😍
Just Beautiful - I was napping and listening to you- damn it Ken-‘u triggered tears w your beautiful voice and his lyrics
Absolutely awesome man, u sound like lou. And he is awesome as well 👏🏻🤘🏻💪🏻👍🏻
I appreciate that!
Ken, dude, you gotta sing Weird Al! You sound just like him. Keep up the good work!
Love Foreigner. Not the same without Lou. I liked when they brought Jason Bonham in on drums. The percussion always stood out on many tracks along with the vocals of course. Lou is an awesome singer and the band just aren't the same without him. Great video Ken! Thank you so much! On a side note; Rick Beato just released a live interview with Jon Anderson. Check it out, you'll love it!🎤🎤🎤
Thanks for insight, Jeff!
