I've seen people say that if a company doesn't release a piece of media and writes it off for a tax break, then it should automatically enter the public domain, as the copyright holders have forfeited their rights to generate revenue from it

If another company does get the rights to Coyote V. Acme it could lead to a great marketing campaign. Could have the tagline, "The movie Warner didn't want you too see" or something along those lines.

For another example of almost lost media, in February 2021, Disney announced the closure Blue Sky Studios and with it, cancelling their final film, an adaptation of ND Stevenson's webcomic Nimona, which had reportedly been "75% complete" and "would have been finished by October 2021"
However, thanks to the resilience and persistence of fans, in April 2022, Annapurna and DNEG announced it had acquired the film, with Netflix getting distribution rights and the film being released in June 2023.

@@Eminster 2 of the 5 Ice Ages were good. The company's best film was Peanuts, and the Schulz estate held their hands the entire time. Otherwise I'm sure a bunch of hip hop stars would have been the voices of Snoopy and a bunch of obnoxious bird sidekicks. Cuz that's the animation studio's problem. They wanted to have the next Donkey from Shrek and had so many wisecracking sidekicks in every movie, it was distracting. I mean, I like Sid, I like the robot Robin Williams played, but every freaking Ice Age they needed more and more wacky sidekicks with celebrity voice actors. Spies in Disguise and Nimona seemed like they would have turned a corner, but they'd go back to cash cow franchises soon enough, especially the lame and overrated Rio.

This is such an old person observation - not a "rant", because I'm not angry by any means, but I've noticed recently that older people pronounce "Bros." as "brothers", since the little period indicates that it's not a word, it's an abbreviation. So old people say "Super Mario BROTHERS", "Super Smash BROTHERS", "Warner BROTHERS", etc. Younger people say Super Mario BROS, Warner BROS, etc. And I just feel like I'm on some "hello, fellow kids" if I say it the young way so I'm stuck 🤣

If it's an abbreviation, you typically say the full word. You probably also would say "mountain" instead of "mt" or "mister" instead of "mr". "Brothers" is only different because "bros" sounds pronounceable, but it technically should still be "brothers".

i think that tax right offs above a certain monetary amount should be reviewed first, like a judge hears their reasoning and decides whether or not it warrants a right off. like say there was a friday the 13th film was in production at the time that the ownership lawsuit was brought forth, then i could see the shelving of that movie being a write off, or a partnership falling through before release, i could also see that, but fully finished movies just being erased for money is insane.

Why? It's a private business. They're not doing anything dodgy, and they're not taking people's money in exchange (well, not with how it's _meant_ to work, anyway). I predict that the "you can find a different distributor" is a tactic to still never release it. I figured WB will attempt charge anyone who wants the movie extremely high royalty fees for the ability to use any of the Looney Tunes characters in the movie, so much so that no one will 'want' the movie. Then they'll quietly write it off anyway claiming "see, no one else wanted it either".
    I hope I'm wrong.

And also for all those streaming fees that the writers and actors will be getting post strike. I mean, the initial announcement happened mere days after the actors strike ended. WB is in such financial ruin and yet what they tried to do with this movie is still a crime, considering that it's based on one of their oldest and most celebrated IPs. Hoping for a positive outcome of all this mess, would love to watch the movie.

Right now business is trying to figure out what they can get away with that the public will accept, so keeping something 'virgin' for later sale isn't the worst strategy although it also says something about your companies confidence in it's ability to deliver profit.

@@JDoe-gf5ozBecause the people who worked on that movie WORKED on that movie. You wasted years as a, for example, VFX artist making a film only for them to cancel it and never come out. You not only are not paid as much as you should have been, but when you apply for a job somewhere (and let’s face it, none of these people will want to work with WBD if their projects keep getting shelved like this), suddenly you have a massive gap in your resume where you can’t just point at a film and say “hey, I worked on this if you want to check out my work.” In fact none of the work you made on that movie is yours, because it’s been locked away and taken from you. Actors, writers, editors, artists, etc. make up so much more of the movie than the greedy guy at the top greenlighting and funding the film.

It's a shame but the reality is they're a business, so all the changes and write-offs when the merger happened makes sense. Time Warner didn't have a good business strategy, especially for DC, and so the cost-cutting is only logical. I'm sure if it was feasible, they'd have written off The Flash and Aquaman 2 too.
To be honest, as someone who enjoyed watching Wile E. Coyote and Road Runner growing up, I can't say a whole movie about them sounds that exciting. Maybe it would have been, I don't know.

I see you commenting a lot on how this is apparently legal. Actually, no, there's a high likelihood it isn't legal. Finished production cancellation is actually a recent thing, and rarely done. These movies have larger issues that can actually be justified (such as a finished Bill Cosby movie that was shelved for obvious reasons). Tax write off was never the real reason, it just happened to be one of results as it it is a legitimate loss. And most of these movies in the past, do end up with very limited releases.
WB brought too much attention to this by being the one to use Tax write off's as THE ONLY reason for these films. This sets a new precedent of legal issues that can be considered in the realm of fraud. There is substantial grounding for this.
Use some critical thinking skills, learn movie history, and don't be a braindead simp.
