  • Running continuously for over 100 miles in mountain terrain takes a different kind of athlete-and a different kind of diet. Through years of training as an ultra runner, Timothy Olson has taught his body to become "fat-adapted," using fat from animals and plants to fuel him through feats that seems superhuman. In this episode of FUEL, we examine how Timothy's food regimen benefits his performance.

Their average life span is low simply because 75% of kids died before age 7 (50% at birth and 50% of those survivors before 7), and about half of 7 year olds died before full maturity. Those who actually survived childhood were usually extremely intelligent and fit, and survived to old age even without modern medicine and in a harsch world. They were individually superior to us in every way, but we are ofc collectively superior to them just like a billion ants can form a society more complex than our own was until 200 years ago.

      @Marissa Lipschutz Why would you listen to an MD about nutrition, unless that was their area of expertise? Ever pay attention to how a typical doctors visit works (assuming you're American)? You sit in the waiting room for about 30 minutes. Then you sit in the doctors office for another 30 minutes. Then the doctor finally comes in, goes through the typical routine, talks to you for a couple minutes and whisks you on your way. Its over within a matter of minutes...
      Doctors offices are set up like a freaking box store these days. They take on as many patients as possible and cram them into these short 10-15 minute appointments. Its all about making money. Doctors are extremely overwhelmed by the volume of patients they see in a day.
      My point to all this is, I highly doubt your typical MD has adequate time to properly figure out what diets work best for specific patients. They are too busy, they aren't able to be on the cutting edge of nutrition. Thats why imo doctor's recommendations are to be taken with a grain of salt.

    This diet is fine, however carbohydrates are needed for higher performing athletes, or running at shorter distances. The rate of beta-oxidation of fatty acids into ATP to be used for energy while running is not sufficient enough to sustain the energy requirements of somebody running a traditional marathon, or any distance, at a faster speed. The rate of glycolysis, the Kreb’s cycle, and the electron transport chain are much faster than beta oxidation, so energy can be made from carbohydrates much faster than it can be made from fats. This is why high level runners eat so many carbohydrates. This diet only works for him because he runs at slower speeds for a very long distance. The slow rate of energy production from beta oxidation is able to keep up with his metabolic demands, and he can tap into the almost infinite storage of energy that are fat deposits in our body.

    I’ve ran two full marathons and that was very taxing on my body. Anyone who can do ultramarathons and especially in mountainous areas has my utmost respect. I live in the Mississippi Delta so my area is completely flat, I had a brutal awakening last year when I did a few endurance events in Vermont, New York and New Jersey. I also had a very hard time in the mountains in California when I was in the Marine Corps back in the early 2000s; mountainous terrain is no joke.

    • @bugbean5500
      @bugbean5500 Рік тому

      There are people like myself who thrive in mountain running but suck on concrete. I just hate the repetitive nature of the ladder and there's way too much stuff going on around me like people and traffic. I get tired out of boredom very soon hence my form starts to fall apart and I want to get it done quickly to get out of the stressful environment. Bad combination because it puts me at risk for injury even at shorter distances. But I never had a problem with running in the mountains all day long with lots of ascending, descending, preferably some easy climbing in between to mix things up even more. I'm always amazed by how many people voluntarily run road marathons and finish because I couldn't even do a half marathon in these conditions.

      +Kyle Tucker Actually you can be. That why he said he adapted his body to usimg fat for fuel. Being fat adapted, we have access to about 40,000- 50,000 calories... so that's more than enough to stay fueled. There's a difference between endurance running and sprinting. It's harder to burst into running FAST if your fat adapted, but it's easy to go far. But thats why some keto people do small carb ups before a workout if they need to do power moves.

    • @homerun217
      @homerun217 8 років тому +161

      Absolutely incorrect. I have ultra runner friends who all swear by Keto for their 50-100 mile runs. Ketosis is phenomenal for endurance activities, I love it for snowboarding all day without getting tired. I'm not saying it's for every activity, but for ultra running it's great. If you're a sprinter, power lifter, short distance swimmer,etc, you'd want a high carb diet (explosive movements for short duration). Try doing some research on the topic, I think you'll be pleasantly surprised at what you find.

So I'm sorry that you feel you need to eat meat but since you are supporting the destruction of the planet that we all live on, you make it our business.

      ***** Running actually, i mean be sponsored, win some races and try to market your own image, for example, with this kind of little movies. Well, this is not NBA for sure, but as i'm answering you from the Alps, i can say there is a real audience for "guenuine athlete" (i mean natural as you try to live as you "work", for example by introducing your familly during a shopping session) and ultradistance activities (most of the time in nature) like Thimoty Olson or Anton Krupicka who definitely personify a new approch from competition (more "against" you than the others in few words). But try to understand that trail, as a dedicated market, didn't exist exist maybe 10 years ago so everything is in progress. Maybe like skateboard 20 years ago.

    I was in a similar place, I had been snowboarding competitively, also doing a multitude of different sports, then had a personal breakdown and basically spiralled downwards into a place, I can only call life failure...I was alone, isolated myself out of shame and hit the self destruct button. I was ready to give in... but I don't like losing and that helped me find my way out of a very dark place.... I always enjoyed running, but had never run farther than a marathon. I decided to do an Ultra and it had such a profound impact on my life. Along the way, I had something personal happen to me and was on the precipice, of losing my way again... So I set myself a goal to run the Moab 240 and as the first step, I'm aiming to run the Leadville 100 ir the WS 100 in 2021/22. Your story is exactly what I needed to hear, it has inspired me and I'm very grateful. Thanks for sharing this. #Future Super informative as well - much appreciated!

    As a person who has lost a lot of weight on the low carb diet (nearly 60 lbs as of me writing this), Timothy Olson has become one of my heroes. Obviously the diet has worked wonders for me, with respect to fat loss and improving other markers of my health (i.e. fasting glucose, HBA1C, cholesterol, HDL, LDL, triglycerides, blood pressure, etc.), but I, like many others, have always been dubious about performing at high athletic levels on the diet. Now with elite athletes like Timothy Olson, Lebron James, Kobe Bryant, and Lindsey Vonn using the diet, and with Drs. Stephen Phinney and Jeff Volek research on the diet's efficacy for athletic performance, the myth that you can't perform at high levels on the diet has finally been dispelled.

    • @julianboyce7520
      @julianboyce7520 8 років тому +1

      +Drake Santiago Yeah, that's just wrong. If you are following the diet, sorry to say this but in a recent study all patients who were overweight, lost weight on paleo, but hit a plateau and slowly gained it all back. If you know anything about nutrition you would know the only reason one might lower cholesterol on paleo is if previously they were eating a lot of dairy and meat. Now since animal products are the only foods that contain cholesterol, if you cut out dairy of course you will lower LDL, but it will continue to raise just at a slower pace. You think Kobe and LeBron know shit about nutrition? They know basketball, and that's it. Would I ask a NASCAR driver what phytochemicals are best for my body to prevent cancer? NO! So why take nutritional advice from some basketball players who just do what they are told by some second class Doctors that the meat industry have in their back pocket.
      Listen to a real doctor, unbiased, with 1000s of case studies of people he has helped. Dr. Joel Fuhrman. If you want to show strength, be compassionate and stop living your life making excuses as to why you 'have to' eat meat.
