- In this episode of FUEL, we head to new heights following professional rock climber Alex Honnold, whose jaw-dropping, free-solo climbs (no ropes) have cemented him as one of the most revered and respected climbers in the world.
Set in stunning Utah, Alex takes us along as he trains and preps for an upcoming expedition in Angola, Africa. We follow him to unique climbing destinations; Maple Canyon for cobble climbing and an intense alpine scramble up the south ridge of Mount Superior with fellow dirtbag climber James Lucas.
Before setting off for Angola, being a self-professed lazy cook, Alex shops for vegan snacks and drops by Gnarly Nutrition in search of light, tasty, and travel-friendly food to keep him powered up and at a high fitness level. It’s clear, no matter what Alex scarfs up, that by following his own brand of a healthy middle ground, the sky’s the limit.

@@kamillea.8420 My mistake. About the diet. For sure, he does is like the kind of person that once he commits to something he is in 1000 %. Climbing, diet or whatever and I am sure he shares his feelings pretty openly. In spite of it he still has friends that seem to respect him, and he seems like he is willing to help anyone he can whether or not they share his beliefs.

The thing I love about Alex Honnold (in all his interviews and videos) is it's 100% real. He is not "posing" for the camera or trying to be something he is not. It's just him. Take me or leave me. Even in his newer stuff he just doesn't care. I love watching stuff like this. The worst thing he could do is sign up with a netflix series and then have the episodes "Americanized" if that is even a word.

Honestly, knowing what he does and has done, and just seeing how he is, he might be mildly psychopathic. I think he spoke about it himself - not feeling emotions the way others do. I think that may exolain why he seems to be himself wherever he goes.

It's what happens when you are with yourself, rely only on yourself, on the edge between life and death. Society, his parents, family, friends, co-workers, people can't save him when he slips. He is in absolute control of himself. This humbles a man to appreciate each sunrise. Hence his contentness and peace.

He may not admit it himself, but Alex definitely has both. The formula to being an incredible person is talent + tenacity + luck + time.
When you listen to Alex talk, he is literally such a sweetheart. So incredibly humble. He really is the epitome of everything that is right. He has all that money, yet graciously lives in an old camping style van, just travelling and camping and climbing, just living his best life. He has got it right, and I feel a lot of us could learn from him.
I remember meeting this guy when I was younger at red rocks. He was helping us climb and I had no idea that he was famous 😅

Knowing that Alex has a rad wife now and is expecting a baby in the next few months is really cool thinking about. Happy for him and the way he's made means for himself to live his passion truly is inspirational. Something I hope and wish everyone can do if and when possible. I like Alex and I respect what he does but part of me felt like just driving around living in a van and climbing year round is kind of a selfish endeavor. Then he talked about donating 1/3 of his salary to charity and buying solar panels for a village in Africa. He is clearly a charitable person and doesn't think of just himself.

The tax break he gets from donating to charities isn't enough to offset the money he donates to charities. If he wants to have as much money as possible he wouldn't donate a penny and would just pay taxes on all of his income.
James Smith In my country for example most of the governments budget gets spent on welfare (money for people who can’t get or sometimes won’t get a job). And that budget is fed through income tax hence technically your tax is used for charity.

He does talk a lot of shit to his climbing partners. There's an interview of Tommy Caldwell saying Alex berated Caldwell for not climbing as fast him. But apparently, at the same time, Alex is very humble about his own abilities, and is very polite to strangers and fans.
Climbing walls isnt logical though. There are more efficient and quicker ways to get to the top.

I dont understand why so many people are hating on him. He seems like a really down to earth, cool guy whos doing a lot to try and help various people. @@drealboy_ Tommy Caldwell spent years on the dawn wall over all. He is a really good climber, but he is not the most skilled. He has climbed 15a, which is world class, but Adam Ondra has done 15d, which has not been repeated. He is better.
I just kinda started bouldering at my local climbing gym, and I get spooked sometimes just getting to the top of a 10-13 ft wall with soft mats on the bottom. Watching alex do what he does is just insane, but its just as awesome seeing how happy and alive it makes him feel.
The Fuel series is like comfort content for me. I go back and watch all of them regularly

Don't overestimate sponsorships in climbing. It's not much more than some pairs of climbing shoes, maybe some plane tickets now and then AFAIK.
One of the best climbers in the world and he's living the dream. So humble. He needs very little and he's happier then 99.9% of us. Some very basic life rules everyone should pay attention too. Meanwhile I'm worried about the next Supreme or Jordan shoe drop, all shit that really doesn't matter. Hats off to Alex..
If you can pay your bills and hold your own and you're doing what you love, then you are a success, period. As for you worrying shoes or whatever, it's a sign your life if pretty good. When you're broke and maybe your health breaks down you'll stop giving a flying fuck about lots of what used to consume you. You learn what really is and isn't important. Then when you're doing better again you can take some of that new perspective with you and you'll be a better person for it.

I love that his best friend is James, a low-key fellow climber. And, they just do this together day after day... regardless of whether anyone is watching.
He’s one of the greatest athletes of all time. What he and Tommy Caldwell have accomplished is astonishing.

Climbing elevated to an art form. The dedication to become, essentially, wandering monks who serve at the Temple Of Climb.
Such purity.
In Belize, back in the 70s, I encountered a loose knit community of climbers that had all taken bad falls.They were a stand offish bunch. And I had always felt like I understood why: If you haven't been there, you just will never know.
These kinds of videos speak volumes about being serious about climbing.
And here I am scared to climb a ladder to paint the wall.
To be fair, ladders are super rickety and poorly designed, I bet he'd have some interesting things to say about that situation.
I've never seen a ladder I trusted and have seen plenty of no fault falls.
It's a good fear to have. I didn't more than 20 years ago...painting my 18ft./vaulted ceiling in my bedroom....ladder extension came off the wall, slid down, I impacted another 3ft, ladder at the base....opening up my rip cage, lacerated spleen, and 2 broken ribs.
And I was a rope climber/guide on Rainier....with no accidents/serious injuries.
I don't have a fear of heights, ladders, etc.- BUT when on ladders following my accident....I RESPECT ladders so much more- and approach their placement with great respect and homework. BTW....I'm 63, and have only had one ladder accident. Ever.

Im a painter...on them most days....extension ladders i make sure and double triple make sure they are balanced right and wont slide one way or the other especially out side if the ground is not level...then adjustable feet come in handy!! Every time a make a move on a ladder I am 100% conscious of that move as to not get out of balance

25 yrs ago I practiced Karate, Hatha Yoga, etc. Now, due to spinal injury, I'm 100% disabled. I used to think--w/his free soloing--Alex had no respect for life. I've learned he respects life more than most. I have mad respect for him.

Initially I really wanted to say something negative... Like I'm surprised he drives a van... Or reuse his bottles that he pissed in... But at the end of the day I'm the one that still has to go to the same freaking office everyday. I've put on like 15 lb in a year and a half from all the candy sitting around my workplace.
