I have a question regarding sugar substitutes. I am focusing on keto-carnivore and love it...however, in my morning coffee I use heavy whipping cream and splenda. What is your position on using the splenda? Is it good or bad or stopping me from ketosis?
@Annalise Brett If you are taking calcium, you need to supplement with Mk7 to keep calcium in your bones instead of arteries.. better to leave calcium off. I took calcium citrate with Mk7 during adaptation period and got bad muscle cramps in calves during sleep.
32 years old and experienced my first gout attack at 28. I’ve always been at a healthy weight but made a lot of bone headed decisions on my diet. Now at 32 I’ve switched to a carnivore diet and maybe a little keto here and there, but since the switch I haven’t had a single flare up in over a year. I’ve also cut out alcohol consumption to only special occasions, and found out that “sugar free” drinks are actually worse than normal sodas. Cut out alcohol, limit grains, hydrate, stay active, and avoid ALL processed foods/drinks. Cheers to all my fellow gout sufferers! There is a light at the end of the tunnel!
I got it at 29 but didn't have my first full blown attack until a month before my 30th birthday. It was an entire month of torture as I tried to ride it out. Eventually I went to the hospital when it got to the point of insanity. Couldn't walk or even hold my foot out as gravity alone felt like an anvil. Quit drinking over 2 years ago but occasionally get flare ups to this day. In one right now. Was scared about trying carnivore because of what they say about red meat and gout, but thanks to this video, I'm going to try it out.
A couple things I have found that helps me with gout management besides allopurinol is taking a top quality turmeric supplement from garden of life which has some Black pepper in it to jack the obsorbsion by 1000x I dont know the how but the pepper helps the turmeric get into your system I take the turmeric right before going to bed and I will drink cranberry juice cherry juice and pomegranate juice or eat fresh cherries or pomegranate seeds every so often and to so how much this helps with gout I had a severe flair up of gout in my knees a couple years ago to where from my knees to 3/4ths of the way up my thighs was bright red like a sunburn and that area was so hot that it felt like I had charcoal on fire under the skin and I have a very high pain tolerance due to having osteoarthritis in both knees prior to the gout setting into both knees and a whole slue of issues which causes severe pain in my back and cause severe muscle spasms in my back and the flare up I referred to of gout I was in tears from the pain someone went and got the turmeric supplement pills for me and a small bottle of pomegranate juice within a matter of 30 minutes of taking the turmeric and drinking the pomegranate juice the gout flare up stopped and the burning and the bright red color in my knees and thighs we nt away so you might try this over the counter gout treatment dont get me wrong I'm not a medical professional by any means but I just know what worked to help my gout
@@thefaceless8796 I use garden of eden brand of turmeric it has Black pepper for the turmeric absorption and it has some probiotics as well it works very well at one point I ran out on the second day without it both knees swelled up as if I had a watermelon in both knees and they turned a bright burning ember red color and from the knees up to halfway up my thighs turned that shade of red and got so hot that even ice packs wasnt cooling them off a family member went and bought the brand of turmeric I use after about an hour after I took it the swelling went down the color went back to normal my knees and thighs were still hot but were then like a towel that wasnt quite hot hot they were like like if you heated water halfway to a bo then put the towel in and then put them on my knees and that flare up was bad enough to where even the extremely high tolerance to pain had me in tears which is something I very rarely do from pain but yeah the next day I had some tenderness but that's it the garden of eden brand is pricey but it's the best I've found to help out my gouat
I can attest to this to a certain extent. My first gout flare up is @ age 30, back then I didn’t know it was gout already. My doctor told me to avoid purine (basically red meat) and put me into maintenance medication (allopurinol for the most part). I took medrol and Celebrex as well if I would have any flare ups.. At first I tried to stop my medication and didn’t eat any red meat, but still it didn’t do no good. Things change when I stop eating inflammatory process foods (sugar, vegetable oils, oats, pasta, flour)... I still eat fruits and honestly I’m not putting any much attention on what kind (wether high in fructose). Bottom line, it’s a whole food approach for me...now I don’t take any medication and enjoy eating pork, beef, fats... and no gout flare ups!
Suffered from gout for 20 or 30 years, never followed the gout diet and would have a flair up about every 6 months. I prefered that to eliminating all the good food from my life style. I am now on a low carb diet and eliminated most of the sugar and eating keto. No gout in 2 years.
@11:14 "Not having a gout flare up will be more fun than any fun you could have from drinking" I got a chuckle out of that. Truer words have never been spoken.
I suffered from gout for around 2 years. Most painful thing I have ever experienced. I had never been a big a big alcohol person but I started drinking a couple margaritas at dinner almost every night. Thats when I started to experience these major issues. I stopped drinking alcohol and cokes and began drinking a lot of water. I haven't had a gout attack in 3 years since.
It is so encouraging to know that there are ways to prevent gout attacks . I have completely stopped drinking alcoholic beverages after my first gout attack . I neglected on the hydration and had my second attack within 5 weeks . I am now going hard core on hydration and follow some other do’s and don’ts as prescribed by experts .
Magaritas have high levels of high fructose corn syrup, it's the problem, not alcohol. Yes a lot of alcohol will affect gout, but high-fructose corn syrup is the deadly. I don't drink alcohol, but every time I go overboard with sugary shit and or ice cream I get an attack. The last one last week was my elbow, pain was from my head to my chest all over the body, and extremely painful elbow joint. \BTW I keep a diary every time I get an attack and every time it's the sugar consumption that is the commonality
1. Stop drinking alcohol 2. Lose fat 3. Decrease inflammation in body; especially seed oils 4. Decrease fructose (fruit juices too) 5. Decrease sugar and grains. 6. Keep insulin low with low carb woe; low carb, keto, carnivore 7. Get plenty of magnesium and potassium in your diet. 8. Make as many Ketosis as you can, don’t drink ketones MAKE your own. 9. Drink your coffee!

Lee Dava anytime. Had a breakfast of 2 eggs, spinach, 1oz cheese, 1 oz chopped ham, red pepper. Big toes aching right now. Drink lots of water all day. Like this almost everyday.
I would like to share how I got rid of inflammation in my knee. I already eat keto. Moving toward carnivore. I took 4 capsules of moringa daily and my inflammation was gone in 3 days. I am now growing a moringa tree in my back yard.
I had bad out attacks for years, and the only thing that stopped them was cutting sugar and carbs. I also reduced alcohol consumption and rarely drink beer, generally sticking with a low-carb cocktail, vodka and water with lime. The last attack I had came after mowing through a large bag of trail mix over 2-3 days - tons of raisins and other dried fruits. Fructose overdose! The stuff about meat causing gout is clearly wrong, at least for me. My personal experience has convinced me the root cause is insulin resistance.
@@DannyB.-wq3wp Well, I eat WAY more PUFA's and fats in general since I reduced my sugar/carb intake. Lost 40 lbs., reduced inflammation, came off blood pressure meds, and I haven't had a gout attack since. I'll eat the peanuts; you can have the raisons. ;)

Dr.Berry Thank you so much for this information!!! I have suffered from gout the last 3 years. I tired everything and nothing was working. Everything online points to purines and uric acid. The foot doctor wanted to just give me meds which I refuse to do. In the middle of a gout attack I switched to Keto. I was scared thinking it would make it worse...but I'm so Happy to say my foot kept getting better even thought I was eating red meat, bacon, fish and chicken. I cannot thank you enough!! I cannot believe how many doctors are misinformed. If anyone reads this comment cut the carbs, and sugars go keto and gout will be gone. Dr.Berry knows what he it talking about! Thank you sooo Much!!! Update 4 weeks in to Keto no issues with gout at all. I lost 12 pounds and my stomach hasn't looked this flat! Thanks again Dr.Berry Update: 14 weeks in 24 pound loss and no gout issues at all!!
I'm embarrassed at how many of these lies I fell for. I suffered from severe gout flares for a decade. I was specifically told to NOT go keto because it would cause my gout to get worse. Well, I did it anyway and guess what? I'm no longer taking meds and zero gout flares.
They (being big pharma) wants us to stay sick weak and in need of medications in order to function. Thank heavens you decided to go against the grain and do keto.
That sounds fascinating. May I ask what Keto diet you're on? It's about time I took measures of my own, but i'm afraid of the "what if it triggers flares" part.
@Ibrahim-fs4tm I'm currently doing carnivore. 99% meat and a little cheese. Zero carbs. My last uric acid test was actually pretty high, but no gout. Doctor said it was likely because I was losing so much weight. Lost a total of 100 pounds.
I have 2 tablespoons of Apple Cider Vinegar every night before bed, been doing it for 10 years now and have never had an attack since. I also drink a lot of black tea, no sugar, works wonders. I had gout so bad 10 years ago it nearly crippled me, knees, ankles, back, shoulders, elbows, hands, it was so debilitating. I'm 62 and gout free, feeling great and loving life, couldn't be happier👍
Before being on Keto a year ago June I was taking 300 mg of allopurinol (up from 100 mg because my uric acid was high per my doctor) . I stopped taking it when I started Keto last June. Zero gout flair ups. Weight down by 55 lbs and A1C down from 6.0 to 4.6. What Dr Berry is saying is true.
But my doctor says that high level of uric acid is bad not only so much for gout , but for long term health of the kidney and heart. So he wants me to take allopurinol.
I was just going to ask a question about that. I take 200 mg of allopurinol. I've been on keto for the last 3 months and my uric acid actually went up, so I'm hesitating about quitting allopurinol. My joints show no sign of flare-ups, but I still don't have the guts to withdraw the medicine.

I had a similar issue. It was primarily in my foot, which was extremely debilitating and nothing worked. I had cortisone shots, took colchicine, cut out seafood, reduced red meat, etc. No bueno. I became a carnivore and that had an immediate impact. That said, it did take a year to fully resolve, but I now have moderate permanent joint damage, so I'll never be back to 100%. I never really consumed much fructose, or alcohol, so I'm convinced the sugar and seed oil were the real culprits.
For what it's worth. I went to the doctor with sharp pain in my toes and was diagnosed with gout. She prescribed a medication. I recalled a friend telling me she used raw apple cider vinegar to keep her gout at bay. I started a regimen of taking the ACV mixed in water 3 to 5 times a day. The gout was completely gone in 5 days. Never filled the prescription.
Love this advice, 25 year gout sufferer, Sugar and Fructose holic. I been a low fat "balanced" diet person my entire adult life. I've also suffer from inflation and gout constantly and I've worked out my entire life. So I look fine from the outside but in constant pain from inflation the last few years. (I'm 63). I cut the sugar and Fructose out about 10 day ago and I already feel 100% better. Thanks Doc!
After going keto I haven't had any "goutbreaks" in my feet or anywhere else. I have also lost 60 lbs, dropped my A1C from 10.7 to 5.4 in 4 months, and I am off 2 diabetes meds. Thank you Dr. Berry!
@@mandyware7906 Is there a medication that you are taking that could cause gout all on it’s own. Since my original comment I have been diagnosed with rare neuroendocrine cancer. I was put on Afinitor (everloomis) which bumped my A1C from 5.1 to 7.9 with no change in diet (I’m 90% carnivore). Now anytime I have any sweeteners at all, even non-caloric and all natural, I have gout start back up. Even with all this the gout isn’t as bad as when I was consuming all the sweet potatoes because fiber. I take ibuprofen as needed and add Apple Cider Vinegar to my ice water and that helps. Had a gout attack that lasted three days. Fun! Starting keto plan, will not listen to “low purine diet” bcs I feel intuitively that inflammation is the main problem. Wish me luck!
Staying hydrated is very critical; second key thing is significantly reducing sugar (if not eliminating); third - moderate carbs; fourth - avoid alcohol (beer in particular). These are just a few I have noted over the years. I learned these the hard way after experiencing severe gout attacks with extreme swelling and pain (I even had to buy crutches because when I had flare ups I could not walk for days).

@John Miller So far over a year on carnivore. I've had maybe one gout attack, but it was due to a drink. I still supplement with tart cherry pills, but it's only after a huge workout. Other than that, I would say my gout has been in about 90% in remission.
@John Miller I had one just before I started keto. So it's been a month. Unusually got it once every 2 months or so but was slowly becoming more regular. That's why I tried keto to try stop it.
Dr. Berry speaks the amazing truth here on gout. I'm a proud Patreon supporter of Dr. Berry after his videos helped change my life. So take his advice if you or a loved one suffers from this excruciating pain. Now, indulge me as I add some details below. Gout literally started to rule and ruin my life in about 2015. Ankles (mostly) but big toe, middle toes, Achilles, tarsals, metatarsals and knee. Starting in roughly 2008 I started to get gout flares once in a while. The first time I thought I busted my foot somehow. Then with increasing regularity the gout flares would come one once a quarter, then once a month, then once a week. By the time I was 46 I had to make contingency plans for business or leisure trips around the inevitable gout flare. And let me tell you the pain is beyond description. No relief whatsoever. If you've read this far you know what I mean. My longtime family doc was empathetic but offered NSAIDs or Allopurinol. The idea of Allopurinol every day just didn't sit right with me. Why would I have to be tethered to a Rx for life when it's probably something I was eating?? So, of course, I did as my doc said: tried to eat less red meat and whole grains with more fruit. Instead of getting better it got worse. Moreover, that way of eating and thinking that a calorie was a calorie was a calorie led to exploding weight gain and by 2017 I was extremely obese. I knew several ppl who suffered from gout and all of us drank too much beer and were overweight. By how to lose weight? Dr. Berry was the first MD I saw on Twitter and UA-cam that was a shining light in a dark abyss. Sure there were others that I still follow as part of my own "Twitter/thought leadership community" but Dr. Berry as an MD led credibility to the war against SAD (standard American diet). I started vigorously consuming his content. Dr. Berry's advice finally convinced me I had to give up beer - even lo-carb beer b/c he's right the best tasting beer in the world doesn't feel as good as no gout pain does. Because of Dr. Berry and others on UA-cam sharing the gospel of a low inflammation diet I picked a date in Jan of 2018 to go all-in. The pain was too much and the thought of living with gout for the rest of my life was terrible. I had to experiment - as Dr. Berry says - as a "Citizen Scientist". The gout didn't go away over night once I went Paleo/locarb. Rather it was like a GPS locating ping. Whereas the ping intervals had been getting closer and closer for the proceeding 7 years (ping.....ping....ping....ping..ping..ping, ping PING)....it started reversing as if an onion of bad inflammation was being peeled away (ping, ping,..ping....ping.....ping.......ping...........ping...............ping). I can now gladly write that I haven't had a painful gout flare in well over a year. I can barely describe how great this is for me! It's feels like I reversed the age clock. I don't have nagging fear of the next flare up. What's more is that I eat red meat ALL THE FRICKIN TIME! Grass-fed, grass finished ground beef, ground goat, ribeyes, pastured bacon. Dr. Berry is so right on....I had to look at my gout as a result of a hyperinsulinaemic, high inflammation diet. It was an experiment to try in Jan of 2018...to vastly lower my insulin response with a changed diet while also avoid industrial seed oils. It worked beyond my best expectations. Down over 90 lbs. Blood lipid panels better. Lower blood pressure. Improved skin and energy levels. I could go on and on. I let decades go by knowing full well I was eating like crap and not taking care of myself. Ironically the insufferable pain of gout was what I needed for the kick in the pants to change something. I started listing to Dr. Berry out of the gate and still do every week to this day as this lifelong way of eating is what I want to do and Dr. Berry helps keep me on the cutting edge of lowcarb/Keto/Ketovore research. Thank you Dr. Berry!

Your gout stories really really hit home. I suffered for years with dipshit doctors telling me I was too young for gout. Finally after about 8 years of suffering I finally got a young PA who prescribed allopurinol and literally saved my life. Gout made me lose jobs and miss family events for years. I had a gout episode. A year or so later, I started watching this channel after I had some high glucose test results. I changed my diet to eliminate almost all carbs including fruits and vegetables. I've been living on meat, eggs, and cheese. I haven't had another gout attack. I've lost weight and my glucose has gone down.
Thank you for this video. The re-education of those of us who live with gout has been immense. I first had a gout attack at 23 years old. I am now 27 and I've had maybe four or five attacks to date. My latest attack last week. Definitely see a lot of value in this video. Really appreciate the information you have shared here.
Had my first attack at 14, but never medicated, and haven't had an attack in years. Everyone seems to have different triggers (offal and shellfish are the bad ones for me - I'm English, so some traditional foods will be different, but I have always been fine with cheese, beer and red wine which can trigger attacks in other people). Always stay hydrated, and if you do drink alcohol, drink a pint of water when you get home, and again when you wake up. If you drink as much beer as an Englishman, down a pint of water before starting the next gallon :-) If you do feel an attack coming on, drink a pint of water. Drink coffee, and drink more water.
I had gout (my sister as well/family history) while on keto and was told to push through it but it continued. I also had a history of kidney stones. Before a beach vacation. I ate a ton of my garden tomatoes, then gorged on red meat, crab legs, shrimp, desserts, and drank fun alcoholic drinks every night. My first bout of gout was awful. Colchicine fixed it. The next summer I endulged in garden tomatoes again and ate more steaks and crab legs and bam! Thanks for confirming this for everyone. I've had debilitating gout over 20 years. Been on keto/mostly carnivore since October. Lost over 60 lbs. Tried everything in past until I reasearched Makaila Peterson's anti inflammatory diet. Went through minor flare ups when dropping weight. I eat mostly red meat now. And feel great. 0 sugars is the way to go....I hope this message resonates with every gout sufferer... terrible condition!
Same for me. First diagnosed with gout at age 24, now 57. Frequency, duration and severity of gout flares in various joints increased over the years. Allopurinol dosage increased from 100 to 300 to 600 mg/day with little to no effect. About 18 months ago I started the Keto diet for reasons having nothing to do with gout. Over the course of a couple months I lost 35 pounds (6 feet tall , went from 245 down to 210) and realized my gout just unexpectedly fixed itself and completely went away. I also quit taking allopurinol when I realized the gout attacks had gone away. It has been 18 months of bliss with no gout attacks. All my lab results and blood pressure are excellent. Keto diet was a very easy transition for me. The hardest part is it is sometimes really expensive and inconvenient to maintain when travelling and/or eating on the run. It is also sometimes hard to fly under the radar in mixed social gatherings serving food. There is always some overweight self-appointed nutrition expert that bird dogs the culinary choices on your plate and proceeds to publically out you and shame you in a microaggression by trying to make your diet a topic of public conversation. There is always at least one in every crowd. Even well meaning people will pepper you with questions that you would rather not talk about. The whole topic just seems to polarize and aggravate people. Attempting to explain your reasons and success just makes matters worse. Whatever you say is dismissed out of hand and goes in one ear and out other by the self-appointed nutrition experts that are invariably triggered by such things.

Thank you. I have enormous trust in Dr. Berry. I have been following about a year. Grateful for his work. I am on week four carnivore and I am presently undergoing a three weeks of repeated gout attacks after many years of basic remission. As a result, I take from this video only the added questions I have deduced about how or why this is occurring? I suppose, given that I have a real basis for trusting Dr. Berry's conclusions , I'll press on. If he is correct through and through then my present dilemma has to eventually correct itself. Sooner, I would prefer, than later. If it does not resolve, then there is still yet a pervading the decided role of inflammation. Nothing motivates enquiry quite like severe pain but I'll stay committed for the time being. I'll edit this again in time to update in case anyone similar stumbles on it. Notably, in every other aspect of my health there is self-evident and unmistakable signs of a radical decrease in inflammation. Yet, when you hobble everywhere you have to go, and cringe all the time, such victories lose their shine.
Had my first attack (left ankle) about five years ago. Had three more similar attacks over the next twelve months. Then an older friend told me to drink apple cider vinegar, about two table spoons in a glass of water every morning. Not had an attack of gout since. Changed nothing else about my lifestyle.
@@glenysmorehu2765 I had surgery to eliminate permanized gout (fungi formations - not fungus just the same name). After this gout would form in my ankle and all the way up to my knee.
I eat low carb, work out 6 days a week, no alcohol, no seed oils, in good shape and got gout. Hydration is key I have never drank enough water for some reason. When I upped my water intake it was gone.
Dr Berg seems to know alot more than most medical doctors. and the info he gives and shares with us is fantabulous. he does an awesome job at educating us. he really seems to know the mechanisms of the human body, and how the body functions and how the organs of our body function. he is a Chiro, sh he is definitely a doctor of the human frame and body. @@AMDG_-nk2dp I completely agree! Dr Berg is very knowledgeable and imo one of the leading keto Dr's. Same as this lovely Dr. Ken Berry. I only trust & follow these two Dr's in my Keto journey.
I had bad gout for around 8 years. It was diagnosed by a hospital ER doctor around winter 2006. I was 26 years old and weighed 490 pounds. He said my uric acid level in my urine was high. I do not remember the exact number but if for just a guess let's say normal level is 4.5 mine was 8. I had around 2-3 flare-ups a year for right at 8 years, and I had bladder infections a few times a year as well. I climbed as high as 515 pounds around 2013. I decided something had to change. I was 33 years old, married to a great woman, and had 3 wonderful kids 1 girl, 2 boys. I at the time was drinking a 24 pack of Mountain Dew cans every 2-3 days. I gave that up and switched to Pepsi and Diet Pepsi. I also cut my number of cans down to 2-3 a day mainly just when eating. I drank and still drink a lot of water throughout the day (evening since I've worked 2nd shift for the last 2 and a half years). I haven't had a gout flare-up in around 10 years. My guess would be the way over doing the high fructose corn syrup had to be the cause. Is that what was actually causing it? I don't know for sure, but it seems really odd if it's not what caused it. I give up the Dew, I didn't have the gout flare-ups. Will I start slamming Mountain Dews 8 or more a day to find out if it comes back? No I won't. I do not want to find out that bad. I am just very glad that it doesn't happen now. Will this work the same for someone else? I don't know but I can also say I've lost 130 pounds along with the gout. So I'd have to imagine it's worth a shot. I know for me it is. I'm now 42, down to 380 and losing, and that wonderful daughter has made me a super proud pap to an astonishingly amazing almost 2 year old reason life exists young man. I want to be around to see this boy grow up and I want him to be able to know his pap.
Excellent, I'm glad your doin better. I had a weight prob and gout. I quit drinking soda pops Totally. I now drink Cranberry juice. Not full strength, I dilute it. 3/4 water and 1/4 cranberries juice. And I went from 244 down to 184. And I walk at least 3 times a week. I feel better than I have felt in 20 yrs! Keep up the good diet!!
Best most knowledgeable doctor I ever met got me off all sodas! Said it is poison! Was hard to kick the addiction, but I made it! And so much better for it!
I suffered 25 years took allopurinol quit eating red meat and drinking alcohol and still got the gout I started drinking eternal naturally alkaline water .I have been gout free for 8 years just from drinking this water.
Same here just last week a colleague got as some water with high Sodium bicarbonate amongst others and after drinking that water the pains in my body literally disappeared! So yeah you got some truth in what you are saying absolutely.
I'm a dietitian and I've tried probably 500 cases of gout then I was able to cure because most people just doesn't know what causes it and the little nuances that make a big difference and yes water makes a massive difference cuz just drinking regular water can clear out a lot of the crystals and making sure there's a good pH can make even a bigger difference. Anyway I just want to send more power to you I'm glad you finally figured it out!!
@@RealRen3977 it's nowhere near a lie but there's a lot more factors than just what how much water you drink! You can drink enough water to kill yourself if you're not eliminating what's causing it in the first place it ain't going to matter. A lot of people just don't know what causes it if you're drinking any kind of sugary drinks and just about everything in the world is acid and that makes it worse and if you're already prone to it it's very very easy I've never had one case that I could not cure though. That's unless they already had it for like 20 years and it was too late because they were already so deformed. The biggest thing is you have to eat a diet extremely low in purines and things that make them. No sugar drinks no beans most meats are out because they're very acidic they even have to be careful with what fruits and vegetables you need sometimes. But once you know what causes it and to avoid those foods it's very easy.
Gout is something I wouldn't wish on a worst enemy. I followed all the advice and ate the "appropriate" gout diet but continued to have flair ups. Finally I found low carb and my last gout flair up was about 5 1/2 years ago. I now follow a carnivore eating plan and eat lots of red meat, shellfish, and organ meats. All three were a HUGE no-no due to purine levels. No more pain. No more flair ups. Excellent advice, Doc.
so low carb/sugar was the main key, right? Seems the kidneys have unequal habilities with the poisons we feed upon. Kidneys dont like wide pH swings, sugarb or uric acid (stones!) Holidays splurge are a prime example to OD on extreme foods: sweet and salty greasy food. Figure, just about everyone that comes back from a cruise... has food related illnesses. The smart holiday brake would be to diet and exercise the body, not to abuse sick food for 7 days !! 👍🏻
@@hermit6208 Yes, I am 100% better. I can't convey how much joy I have in no longer having flare ups. Every time I had one I could barely walk for several days up to two weeks. The pain and swelling was that severe.
@@frogeater9030 I have had a very similar experience. But you say you're eating liver and shellfish? If I eat those foods I will have a gout attack. (Well if I eat too many of those foods over several days) I have great success with chicken and water or steak and water (when I am unsure of what kind of meal I can have).
Had my first gout attack about three weeks ago and it was a shocker; mainly because I thought I was super healthy (ideal body weight, work out etc). The first thing I did was drink baking soda water twice a day to reduce inflammation, and literally within a day, my toe was feeling better. I have also given up beer and cut out sugar, while reducing the amount of carbs I was eating (particularly grains), and have also been drinking way more water. My attack was over in just a few days (thank God), but I will do everything in my power to never have another one!
Will happen again, see a doctor. There are tablets that can help if you follow the doctor’s instructions. It is life long affection and you will need to take tablets for it.
@@TheAussief1 Cut out sugar , alcohol , and yeast . and there will be no need to take any medication . Monitor your diet for any other triggers . Pharmaceuticals will kill you . They also enable you to continue the dietary mistakes that is making you ill . Your doctor is NOT your friend .
My gout has never been formally diagnosed. The first flareup was after a night of drinking more alcohol than normal. Random lady at work said "Your big toe huh? You have gout". The level of her confidence was insane. After about 10 years and periodic flareups, i have found two things. 1. I drink significantly more water than when I was younger. ANY hint of stiffness in bigtoe, knees, elbows, finger joints, I increase water intake substantially and immediately. With just that alone, I have not had a flare up in probably 5-6 years. 2. Baking Soda used on a VERY limited was a good treatment for the pain and to reduce a flare up from days or weeks into hours. Your mileage may vary, but I would strongly recommend MORE water.
DR Ken has great information! I agree with most all of his videos, but natural tart cherry juice with no added sugar absolutely helps gout, my Dad used to struggle with this, he started by drinking 8 oz a day for three days, then just 8 oz weekly, no more gout. All the other advice from Dr Ken Berry is great!
Fabulous presentation...my hubby has not had a gout attack in almost 9 months now since following the Keto/carnivore diet. I had the first and hopefully last gout attack this week after losing 35 pounds on the same diet....want to lose another 20 lbs....so may experience another attack, but except for this one lifetime attack for me, we both feel the best we have felt in our entire life. Y the way we look forward to all you videos, your are favorite.
My first gout attack was 28 years ago so I have studied gout extensively to find relief. My MD was not successful keeping the attacks away. My study and self treatment had been more successful than the MD but over the years the attacks have become more severe and longer duration. My treatment has been exercise and natural items such as ACV, lemons, turmeric, tart cherries celery and such. Tried avoiding foods with high purines such as red meats, shellfish, mushrooms and many others listed as bad for gout. My latest venture has been Keto - it is almost like a miracle. The pain and swelling gone the first week. Have not given up beer - just limited it to 1 night per week - no ill affects. My BMI was 26.7 - now at 25.9 and still coming down. Blood pressure had been ~145/68 - now 121/63 so all is going in the right direction. I am not and have not been on any meds for over 10 years. Have been eating (and enjoying) those bad things such as red meat, pork and others listed as NO for gout. My assessment is: SUGAR was the bad guy. Get rid of the sugar and many issues will be corrected.
@Max -x I eat some tuna and other fish. Sardines and mackerel - NOPE. Just not for me. I do enjoy many other high purine foods - mushrooms, asparagus, bacon, pork, beef. I have had a few gout (scares) in the last year - gout almost always comes on during your sleeping hours. I've noticed over the years that I will wake up in the night and have a certain pain in a joint that will be gout. So each time I have the pain, I will take 4 - 500 mg Ibuprofen when I get up. If the pain persists, I will take 4 more before bedtime. Have not had to take more than twice for the pain to be GONE. This has put a damper on any gout flares so far. In the past, I would wait for the attack to provide the bad pain before attempting to medicate - TOO LATE! The attack would go to extreme before any relief was found. Overall I believe that Keto has been the biggest improvement - the early treatment with Ibuprofen a strong second. No full blown gout attack for 14 months now has been GREAT!
True. After 25 years of gout and went through all kinds of treatments. Am finally free after I stopped sugar. Any form of sugar. I can enjoy the meat and seafood now. Sad thing about it, I followed doctors orders to the T..lol. but they never told me that it was sugar..
Yes. Any type of sugar have been giving me gout. All this time have been informed it was high purine diet. But since I stop sugar I have been having meats and never get inflamed. Very low carbohydrate diet.
@@akakyasai4742 good for you, we are our own best doctors, i make a journal of foods i ate and how i feel the next day, if i feel bad, i avoid those foods. Doctors who became herbalist said that only 4% of sugar is used by the body so just imagine where the 96% ends. Cancer cells love sugar and anything dairy.
I solved my gout problem by keeping note of the foods i ate, it soon became apparent that tomatoes were the main culprit, along with red berries, some beers (not all) and dates. so people, keep a food diary, and the best remedy for severe gout (for me) was colchicine.
WOW, very informative and makes so much more sense than anything we've been told before! My husband is literally in the middle of a gout attack right now and the first thing I told him was to put lemons in his water... I can't wait to share this video with him! I hope I'll find videos from you on rheumatoid, osteoarthritis, and psoriatic arthritis flare ups.? Husband has them all...
Mama Rose After reading your comment about the lemon water I was wondering if a vitamin C deficiency could be another cause for gout ...my husband is just coming out of a gout attack. He was on keto but came off of it and has had a few attacks since -gained weight back too.weight could be a factor. Alcohol definitely and sugar no matter where it comes from. King cake season herein Louisiana (for Mardi Gras) and we’ve partaken ...set up the “perfect (gout)storm.” It’s difficult to stay on keto and I get so bored with it. Ugh... we just have to think more about our health and less about living to eat but it’s tough ...
Interesting, same talk. In the end all Dr's say same increase magnesium in food. They also say magnesium no longer in our food so we must supp But the kicker is they do not say say how much magneium to take. How much.
Pretty good stuff. Keep in mind that the inflammation that arrises from gout is endogenous. That is, the immune system detects the crystals in the joint and sends out WBC'c to phagocytize the crystals. These phagocytes "chewing" up the crystals is what causes the joint damage and inflammation; some of the joint tissue gets chewed up as well. The crystal content of a joint must reach a threshold for the immune system to identify the foreign body and launch an attack. I can drink a beer and feel my toes begin to light up in about 20-30 minutes. So, I quit all alcohol about a year ago. Shrimp can launch an epic attack, as well as a few other foods. I look forward to following some of these steps as I am still trying to manage this by diet. Since I have consumed around 1 gallon/day of water since Late 2001(kidney donor) and if i get apathetic and fall behind on my water drinking I will have a Jr attack. I really enjoy fruit smoothies made mostly of dark berries and don't seem to have problems as a result. I am a licensed healthcare provider.
I don’t understand how many doctors can come up with such opposing conclusions with the same science available. I went down the gout rabbit hole because I had an acute gout flare up and trying to inform myself so that I can make the choices and I run into opposing opinions at a 50% percent ratio. How do I fine tooth comb all this? It’s frustrating!

I do (or don't do) all of these things, but still suffer from big toe joint pain. Maybe it's not gout? I do have calcified joints for the past ten years. I wonder if that calcium will ever break down, or is it oxalates in the joints? Frustrating.

Based on what I explained , the reason when you cut sugar or sugar producing foods that gout gets better or disapears is because irritation in frictionning cartilages , artroses, flares up in a big way in a acidic environment caused by sugar and stess , but the cause is biomecanic at the source. My formation is in ostéopathie and sorry for orthograph errors since im french , so sorry for my french ;) Again thank you for all your work and info , hope i give you food for taught coming from a biomecanic point of vue.

Great video Dr. Berry! I took this advice almost a year ago and it's TRUE for me. Zero gout attacks with the No Sugar No Grains diet. Was on allopurinol for years, have not had any meds for a year now. Keep up the good work!
I didn't start catching gout until I started taking water pills for my Blood Pressure. And my Doctor kept telling me to watch my red meat when I gave up red meat for 4 months I still caught gout. That's when I realized the water pill was causing gout.
Agreed the water pill for High HP gave me excruciating gout over a period of 2 years. I didn't eat any of the foods on the list that supposedly caused gout. Getting off that water pill ended that affliction.
He's right. I didn't have any gout flareups when I was keto for 2years. Losing 60+ lbs was nice too. I stopped keto when the baby came and a year later all sorts of problems came back. I'm just getting back into keto again and I can't wait to get adapted again. My main problem is I don't really want to give up whiskey... But it wasn't a problem when I was eating healthy.
I know how you feel. A couple times a year I just have to have a couple shots of Jack Daniel's. The smell alone puts me in a festive mood. I don't keep it in the house, tho, because I'd probably drink it more often. I'll take a bottle to a party and a couple shots will be enough for me.
@Daniel Caine it is keto, and its not a problem when you are on a keto diet. i am not always in keto but i am pretty low carb. i'm back to being lean and drinking whiskey and dry wines again. totally fine. i upped my water consumption too.
Hi Dr. Berry, I have been binge watching your videos over the past week and learned so much. I developed gout in 2018 having my first attack in Dec of 2018. I couldnt for the life of me understand why I had gout and I was VEGAN! I was floored! The doctors had their theories but none of their suggestions panned out. A little more about my background, I have metabolic syndrome: pre- diabetic, high blood pressure, fatty liver, anemia, etc. All of this seems to developed over the last 4 years, not the anemia. (I've been dealing with that for 20 years.)My doctor has prescribed medicines for each one of these ailments: Metformin, Allopurinol, Losartan, Lasix, etc. So I am on a crap load of meds: I hate it! After listening to your videos and doing research on my own, I decided to try ketovore and since I've done that and it hasn't been that long, about 1 week and I've noticed so many changes in that short span of time. The inflamation in my body has decreased so much, I was pertrified that I'd have a gout attack from eating the meat but haven't had one tingle. Usually after I eat, I would start to feel tingling in my feet and lower part of my legs. NOTHING! I'm in awe. I'm still a bit guarded but the longer I go with this, the more I'm convinced this is working. I can't wait to see what my next bloodwork looks like. Thanks so much for all the information you have provided here. I'm so grateful. I'll keep you posted of my progress. My plan is to get off of all of these meds.
Wow, I wish I would have seen this video a long time ago. After doing intense research I found all the things you have sumed up in this video. It's a travesty that health practitioners are still saying to stop eating meat and to have carb rich foods as a solution. More people need to know the truth that you have put in this video. Excellent work.
I agree 100%. My uric acid levels had shot up around 25yrs ago and I used to have knee pain. I refused to take the allopurinol and with diet alone I managed to resolve it and have never had another attack since. My uric acid levels have also remained normal after the diet changes despite eating red meat 3 or 4 times a week. 👍👍👍
What do you eat in a day? I m on keto day 16 and my uric acid is 9.9 slowly i felt my joint hurt to. Usually i eat fried chicken thigh ,with cucumber salad and lots of mushroom. Total carb per day only 20 gram . Any info on how to lower uric acid ?
I’m just sharing my experience. I had a gout attack after eating shrimp for dinner 3 nights in a row. I used apple cider vinegar and took cherry tart pills. The gout went away within 2 days. I still eat shrimp, but very little. Never had a gout attack since.
Coffee can cause joint pain because of it's polyphenol, phytate, and lectin contents. Coffee is a seed and has seed oil too. I'm already on a ketogenic diet. I don't have gout but I had joint pain and when I quit using seed oils, seeds, and switched from coffee to tea then all my joint pain went away. Thanks Dr. Ken Berry.
Horrendous gout for 5 years. Went Keto in September 2020. Stopped taking Allupurinol in November, not had an attack since September! Still drinking alcohol most weeks but lost 3.5 stone just through eating virtually no carbs! Amazes me that 99.9% of the info i've been given by doctors and internet searches is complete BS. Cheers Dr B. Everything you've said in most of your videos aligns with what i've done and achieved! Yes, i miss carbs but nowhere near as much as i miss being in so much pain i actually started looking into amputation of my feet!!!!!! My onw GP's advice was terrible and just involved taking pills for the rest of my life and not eating all the good stuff (steaks, fish, liver etc...)

@@mattargar3857 Oh wow, that's great, Mat. Don't try to beat yourself up too much on the brief consumption of excessive carbs. . Although I'll admit, personally when I have a cheat day, it ends disastrous for me. Even did two 24 hour fasts, but just yesterday, I wanted to grab anything sweet & carb laden in sight. Also have a craving of fried foods a lot. Although I have switched to frying with avocado oil only. I Haven't touched seed oil, or vegetable oils in a while. So glad you're maintaining & hoping that you stick with it for the longhaul. When I need some motivation, I can come back and read your post 😆. Cheers, Mate!
I believe you are correct. It's not foods that are high in purines that cause the crystals to form, its foods that produce inflammation. I believe that the inflammatory response is what causes the crystallization of the uric acid. Maybe I'm wrong. I have had my share of Gout attacks. I'm going on 5 years of carnivore and have found that the consumption high purine foods aren't the problem. It's when you go off the reservation occasionally and consume foods that are inflammatory by nature as some of us do at holidays or events- dining out, Seed oils, many vegetables, grains, Sugar, alcohol, type A dairy. I have found that as soon as I think it's starting a good dose of NSAD 600mg or 800mg if your late in catching it in time will do the trick. Avoiding inflammatory foods is the key to fewer gout flare ups.believe
You’re doing great things, Doc. I was diagnosed type 2 a couple weeks ago and use your vids to keep me on track with keto. My diabetes dr was very happy to hear I already started keto before even getting the official diagnosis and told me to stick with it! Doctors are opening their eyes and researching this, and it’s great they aren’t being bought by pharma and food industries. :)
It's truly sad that so many doctors have been taken in by the drug manufacturers. Rather than telling people to exercise or eat differently, we just give them a pill 💊! We make tons of money 💰 doing it, too. But all they are doing is covering the symptoms, not curing anything. Yes, people will eventually die with this method, but the pharmaceutical industry will make lots of money in the mean time.
@@davidhelsem8794 pharma meds can cure your present illness but creates another illness that sometimes more fatal than your previous illness, better to try herbal meds.
Be careful with Type 2 and keto - watch your blood sugars constantly, they can go too low - and I'm sure you're aware - that's dangerous. Good Luck, keep up the good work.
Since following a strict keto diet for almost two years I have had no gout flare-ups. I'd been borderline before with a couple flareups in my history, but no meds for it. Thanks for letting us know that it's not from eating meat!
@@KenDBerryMD I am writing this in the middle of a mild gout flare up. I have been doing a LCHF diet for about 4 years and my flair ups are more frequent now than in the first 52 years of my life and this confuses me. I will address these items per your gout avoidance checklist: 1. Stop drinking alcohol: I do drink spirits on occasion, but it is usually only once a week or less. 2. Decrease fat: I am not ripped but my waist to height ratio is .529 and I'm trying to get that even better. I have lost 65 pounds since my heaviest. 3. Decrease inflammation: I had a C reactive protein test recently and my marker was a .6 which I was told is excellent. I have gotten the wife to use better oils and fats for cooking. 4. Decrease Fructose: I haven't had any kind of juice in years. 5. Decrease sugars and grains: doing the Keto/LCHF style diets we just don't get this. On occasion I may eat some of the bun if we stop at a fast food joint while traveling or on the go, but this isn't frequent at all. 6. Keep insulin low: I haven't had a test done, but I am positive I'm not as insulin resistant as I once was. I mainly do IF (18/6) and occasion extended fasts (72 hour) in conjunction with Keto. I can't imagine my insulin being too high. 7. Magnesium and Potassium: I supplement both of these. I use NoSalt for my potassium needs and Magnesium Citrate for the Mag needs. 8. Make your own ketones: I believe I'm doing a good job of this. If I'm in a hurry I will occasionally have a Keto shake to hold me over until supper. 9. Drink coffee. I usually have a cup or two every morning. I have just recently started adding a little pink salt to it. I may not be a perfect example of what to do and not do but I feel I am doing a pretty good job of following your advice. I was doing it before seeing your video, just because it all follows the Keto way of life. So I'm baffled why I am having gout flairs now when I'm Keto? Does hydration factor into a gout flair up?
Mark Nelson I have only in the last week had pain in my big toe joints, never before. I have been eating one meal a day, ketogenic way for two years, am not overweight, do not drink alcohol. I shall be 90 at the end of this month, and need a walking aid. With this I take a 20 minute quick walk every day. I am puzzled by this sudden appearance of new pain.
Thank you I’m 70 years old I’ve been not eating meat, I’m diabetic 2 taking Jardiance 10 now later 25 I’m going to start eating meat. Thank you & your beautiful wife ❤️
It was a refreshing to hear what you had to say about gout and avoiding recurrences of gout. Over the years I've suffered a few such attacks and hobbled on through knowing full-well alcohol was the culprit. I appreciate your straight ahead video and myth busting....thanks! Oh yeah and I stopped drinking quite painlessly :)
Thanks so much for this video. I recently have gone carnivore from being keto. By day 4 I was pretty sick. I'm still carnivore a little over a week now. Near as I can tell I've been experiencing oxalate dumping. Anyway I've had people say eating beef will give you guot. And my shoulder has been real painful lately. Thanks for putting that concern to rest.
Most of the time gout is in your big toe or elsewhere in your feet, ankles, knees, wrist. Ive had gout attacks for 15 plus years but never in my shoulders. GOOD LUCK.
As a retired podiatrist I had the opportunity to treat gout attacks on a regular basis (coined as the disease of kings and queens) I treated acute attacks with Colchicine 10 mg every hour until pain stopped or diarrhea occurs. Works like a charm most develop diarrhea but far better than having the pain of gout, 3-4 pills usually does the trick. I told them to stop all alcohol and sugar and follow up with their family physician. Your approach to long term is spot on, Colchicine is an anti-inflammatory drug for those who don’t know. The big problem was those not following advice of me and their family physician. Enjoy you videos, great information. By the way I am carnivore, feel great, and a very healthy active 72 years old.
Thanks for that. I'm convinced gout is an inflammatory vicious circle... for example over flexing a toe cause minor inflammation which causes reduced mobility of the joint so next time you bend it it causes more damage, more inflammation, before you know it you've got a gout attack. I had to take oral steroids for Ulcerative Colitis for quite a long time and noticed I didn't seem to get gout attacks while I was on them. I assumed it was the anti inflammatory effect steroids have. I'm thinking that taking other anti inflammatory meds like Ibuprofen immediately you notice a problem might prevent the vicious circle starting.
Prob don't need to use that much colchicine. I take 1 5 or 10mg pill a day during an attack. It stops it very quickly...just consume a ton of water. I also use either NSAIDS (I actually use steroids) to get the inflammation down. I can stop most flares before they really get going with this method and prevent attacks.
Gout sufferer here, 60 years old, suffering from a flair up right now, I started doing carnivore for other health reasons, not for gout. Truly, I've not found a dietary solution for the condition I do think that is different for everyone, Colichine has always given me the best and most reliable relief, when a flair up starts, usually every year, the sooner I get on it the better
Thanks. I can attest to what you said. I have been overweight almost all my life and had gout attacks frequently last 10 years. My doctor prescribed Alopurinol but it doesn't work well. Then, one day I decided to go KETO.... cutting sugar and bread all together..... and the gout subsided and now haven't had an attach for last 3 yrs
I was at 37 BMI 5 months ago and today I’m at 32 however. I’m having too much pain in shoulders and elbow. When checked with doctor. My uric acid Is high. I have stopped protein intake. Whey isolate or even meat. But the pain is still there. Thanks for your video. Highly appreciate it.
Came across your video by pure chance. I've had blood tests which show elevated levels of uric acid. I do suffer with inflammation on joints but not gout attacks. I did do Keto for a while and lost 3 stones but the difficulty in maintaining that sort of diet whilst everyone around you eats everything in sight is challenging. I tend to feel that Gout could be categorised into 2 phases (a bit like Diabetes), type 1 is where people have painful gout attacks and type 2 is inflammation which is where I am with it. Your 10 suggestions make perfect sense. The only thing which made me smile was that I got into the habit of eating punnets of cherries and found that my joints did feel better 🙂
Absolutely crazy good information. Thank you so much. Personally, I don't have gout . However, my beloved one does. And this is invaluable information.. I don't eat a fancy diet. I stick basic. I'm over sixty now and still healthy, happy . Despite the fact that I died 3 times, I've had multiple surgeries. I am here to make a testimony to say mind over matter. Food is the best , Grow your own.. Choose Wisely.. Thank you so much💜🇨🇦🙏
I have had gout symptoms for about a year with several flare ups in my knee and foot in that time. I finally convinced my doctor that physical therapy is not the solution. I told him it seems like gout. He just checked my Uric Acid level and it is 11.1. I've never had high blood sugar levels. About 5 months ago I started Keto just to lose some weight but the gout attacks have continued with even more frequency. At least my pain is not as bad as most peoples. It will keep me awake at night but I'm still able to limp along. Thanks for this info as it all makes sense. I'll keep doing Keto and hopefully it is helping.
I was recently introduced to keto and water fasted to begin the process. Near my 24 hour mark during the fast, I noticed a gout flare up beginning and immediately took some meds I have for it. I then researched and found that BOTH water fasting AND the keto diet, itself, trigger gout flare ups. I'm currently trying to get my symptoms back down, wishing I never started the water fast.
@@thinkie12Thank you but I am Gout free now with a low Uric Acid level and I still eat Keto. Turns out my high Uric Acid and therefore Gout was caused by my Blood Pressure medicine (diuretic type). Once we got that changed, my Uric Acid level dropped like a rock. Meat may be acidic but apparently doesn't cause high Uric Acid levels according to modern science studies and my experience personally.
Dr. Berry, you are 100% right that beer is the absolute worst when it comes to causing gout (it's what crippled Ben Franklin) at least for me. However, you said wine and spirits are a close second. Here's my input on that. When I discovered I had gout, and that beer was the main cause, I gave it up completely. That was over 10 years ago. I also went paleo at the time. Since giving up beer I now have a couple of glasses of red wine with dinner on the weekend. I also enjoy a two-finger pour of bourbon (neat) 2 to 3 times a week. I have never had a gout flare-up drinking either of these. The only time I've had gout is when I got into the habit of consuming too many carb-rich foods. When I manage that, I never have a flare-up. I will admit, however, that I am a big coffee drinker and I don't know if that negates the effects the alcohol might have if I didn't drink it.
I have two friends that drink a lot of beer daily. They both have gout flare ups and are basically bed ridden occasionally. They trade their prescription pills. They would rather do that then stop drinking. I don’t drink and have a relatively good diet. Never had gout.
Here's how to start Keto - Click here - bit.ly/KETO101
I have a question regarding sugar substitutes. I am focusing on keto-carnivore and love it...however, in my morning coffee I use heavy whipping cream and splenda. What is your position on using the splenda? Is it good or bad or stopping me from ketosis?
Thanks Dr. Berry. Don't ever quit! You are saving lives!
No mention of the study showing Beta Hydroxy Butyrate ketone blocks the NLRP3 inflammasome-mediated inflammatory disease?
I can’t seem to find the links to any of the studies you used for the video.
@Annalise Brett If you are taking calcium, you need to supplement with Mk7 to keep calcium in your bones instead of arteries.. better to leave calcium off. I took calcium citrate with Mk7 during adaptation period and got bad muscle cramps in calves during sleep.
Dr. Berry was my doctor for the longest time and he took care of me and my gout. He’s such a good dude.

I've suffered for gout for 10 years, I stopped eating beef and alcohol and still had gout, but once I stopped the fructose the gout stopped
My specialist told me to stay away fructose I've never had it but its in my blood
What are some examples of fructose, and did you go back to eating moderately eating beef?
@@Jay-ib3vr fructose is in fizzy drinks and fruit juices. I can eat beef but rarely and a very small portion.
Lower fat and protein and you won’t have any gout attacks even if you eat fruits.
Yes, it hurts like hell. Good thing you eliminated the booze.
.

1. Stop drinking alcohol
2. Lose fat
3. Decrease inflammation in body; especially seed oils
4. Decrease fructose (fruit juices too)
5. Decrease sugar and grains.
6. Keep insulin low with low carb woe; low carb, keto, carnivore
7. Get plenty of magnesium and potassium in your diet.
8. Make as many Ketosis as you can, don’t drink ketones MAKE your own.

I would like to share how I got rid of inflammation in my knee. I already eat keto. Moving toward carnivore. I took 4 capsules of moringa daily and my inflammation was gone in 3 days. I am now growing a moringa tree in my back yard.
Beautiful trees! The "tree of life".
Very very true

I'm embarrassed at how many of these lies I fell for. I suffered from severe gout flares for a decade. I was specifically told to NOT go keto because it would cause my gout to get worse. Well, I did it anyway and guess what? I'm no longer taking meds and zero gout flares.
Awesome 👍😀

Losing weight is biggest thing
Hasn't worked for me...

How are you doing 1 year later?
Staying hydrated is very critical; second key thing is significantly reducing sugar (if not eliminating); third - moderate carbs; fourth - avoid alcohol (beer in particular). These are just a few I have noted over the years. I learned these the hard way after experiencing severe gout attacks with extreme swelling and pain (I even had to buy crutches because when I had flare ups I could not walk for days).

Berry!

I have also lost about 30 pounds. Needles to say I am very happy. More important I want to say that that your reports are the best Ive seen. Unlike most of the others you ARE NOT SELLING. That makes a huge difference compared to all of the others who always have a product to push. Your reports have made a huge difference in my actual health and I just can't thank you enough for your simple desire to promote health and common sense method. Please keep doing what you are doing because you are saving the lives of people like me who you have never even met.
Suffering from day 5 of a gout attack. My left foot is as swollen as a watermelon, and don't even get me started on the joint of my big toe. Been taking allopurinol, and indomethacin. I really need to take better care of my body, it's such a huge warning sign. Lord give me strength to get through a few more days to try to survive this.
I had chronic gout for about 4 years now UNTIL I lost 30 pounds and not a SINGLE gout attack for 8 months and then I gained weight back and gout is back chronic again. Losing weight and eating healthy goes hand in hand which is a double whammy to end gout💯

Drink coffee, and drink more water.
haven’t had gout in two years since moving from keto to carnivore!!!
I had gout (my sister as well/family history) while on keto and was told to push through it but it continued. I also had a history of kidney stones. And yes-its right up there with child birth and I had two 10lb babiesnaturally.. I had 7 gout flares in 4 months while on strict keto. I gave up. Now I decided to try carnivore and 60 days in with no gout!!! I’m sure the oxalates were too high for me with just keto trying to push 7 cups of green vegetables 🥬 a day.
Thank you for sharing! Makes sense.
Interesting some people say the carnivore causes too much Uric acid. I was a carnivore a few years ago. I’m just trying to figure out more ways to reduce the information. I’m just keto now
Lots of store bought potassium
i’ve had uric acid related problems for nearly 20 years, and as long as I take my potassium every day, I have little to no problem with anything related to gout or kidney stones or bladder stones
@@davesommers6427 I’m 7 months in and I have had a few flares. I’m going to try to up my potassium. It does seem the flares are not as intense as before (still bad though) duration is less too. But I still believe carnivore is worth it. 70 lbs down!
I’m 10 days in to my carnivore journey and have suddenly developed gout! I’ve never had gout before in my life. This is very discouraging. I stay hydrated and take all my extra electrolytes. I’m at a loss. Should I just power through and hope it goes away? Anyone else have this experience?
Finally, an MD who speaks the truth instead of throwing pills and conventional garbage at you. I'm 65 and gout free for years after going keto. My uric acid is still elevated (around 7) but the gout is gone. STAY AWAY FROM CARBS, ESPECIALLY FRUCTOSE. Thank you Dr Berry, for your great channel!

@@hetd5618 No, most fruits are like, at most, 200 years old, if you are hiking and find some wild edible berries they are better for the birds than they are for you.

@@cahallo5964 The trouble w/meats and Keto for a gout sufferer is that the meats are so high in purines. Apples are waaaay lower in purines than meats. Oh my gosh thank you! I've been doing keto for almost 3 years, and fairly strict keto for almost 10 months, I'm down 80 lbs. Over the weekend my husband and I celebrated our anniversary and while I didn't drink excessively, I had two martinis at dinner Saturday, a drink on Sunday, and another on Monday which is something I never do. Sunday morning my big toe on my right foot and my second to smallest toe on my left both hurt bad enough to where I had to take breaks and get off of my feet. It just dawned on me that its probably gout caused be the alcohol I had. Thank you for making all of these videos. I'd be lost without them!
Are you feeling better?
Before a beach vacation. I ate a ton of my garden tomatoes, then gorged on red meat, crab legs, shrimp, desserts, and drank fun alcoholic drinks every night. My first bout of gout was awful. Colchicine fixed it. The next summer I endulged in garden tomatoes again and ate more steaks and crab legs and bam! My reflexologist commented on my lobster colored feet and said I had too much acid and to stop the tomatoes. I ditched the tomatoes, drank lots of water, and waited for it to pass. Now I do everything in moderation and rarely drink alcohol and no gout in years.
Are you still taking colchicine.

Do you eat seafood?

Now that I’m older 33 years I’ve noticed I’ve been getting gout in my feet. I’ve cut back on the sugar drinks and it’s helped so now I know.
Had my first attack (left ankle) about five years ago. Had three more similar attacks over the next twelve months. Then an older friend told me to drink apple cider vinegar, about two table spoons in a glass of water every morning. Not had an attack of gout since. Changed nothing else about my lifestyle.
Lemon juice works in a similar way to ACV, they make the blood more alkaline and that prevents the precipitation of uric acid crystals.

Cranberry juice. Not full strength, I dilute it.

Be careful because Aspartame appears to be linked to peripheral neuropathy at least in on animal study.
Fructose from soda can definitely be a trigger for gout.
Best most knowledgeable doctor I ever met got me off all sodas! Said it is poison! Was hard to kick the addiction, but I made it! And so much better for it!

This a lie or you actually serious? Coz I keep getting gout and I drink more water than a normal person

Can we get an update?
I didn't start catching gout until I started taking water pills for my Blood Pressure. And my Doctor kept telling me to watch my red meat when I gave up red meat for 4 months I still caught gout. That's when I realized the water pill was causing gout.
Yes! It was the water pill. I just found that out. I am going to come off of them and Hopefully my BP will manage. This gout is. Crazy.
@Daniel Caine - LOL!!!
Updating your blood tests and symptoms later on would be nice..
How are you feeling lately? Big Pharma would just love you!

How are you doing now buddy ?
Wow, I wish I would have seen this video a long time ago. After doing intense research I found all the things you have sumed up in this video. It's a travesty that health practitioners are still saying to stop eating meat and to have carb rich foods as a solution. More people need to know the truth that you have put in this video. Excellent work.
1stp baking soda in 10oz water 3x a day really helps if i have attack
I cut out beer and bread . YEAST ! I eat plenty red meat , low carbs and no more gout.
How are you doing now?
What do you eat in a day? I m on keto day 16 and my uric acid is 9.9 slowly i felt my joint hurt to. Usually i eat fried chicken thigh ,with cucumber salad and lots of mushroom. Total carb per day only 20 gram . Any info on how to lower uric acid ?
This video changed my life! I found relief from gout for the first time since it started two yrs ago. I can’t thank you enough Dr. Berry!
Still gout free?
David Lee are you having the attack now? What kind of diet you followed
I’m just sharing my experience. I had a gout attack after eating shrimp for dinner 3 nights in a row. I used apple cider vinegar and took cherry tart pills. The gout went away within 2 days. I still eat shrimp, but very little. Never had a gout attack since.
How do you use apple cider vinegar and how much ? How many mg of tart cherry pills do you use ? . Kindly reply .
The exact thing happened to me. I still eat shrimp but not close together or a lot. Haven’t had a flare up I’m a couple yrs.
Hey doc, i want to thank you for this video especially. My mother has been diagnosed with gout. This will be extremely helpful to ease her pain.
Thanks Dr. Ken Berry.
Coffee is bad for you. It depletes your cortisol levels.
Coffee is acidic
It's been a year, how are you doing now Mat?
@@snowblo1 had a few carb wobbles on holiday and the like and stopped weighing myself as have been working out (gently😂!). Gout is gone. Blood work normal. All good thanks. Back on proper low carb diet. Way less than 20 a day and loving it still. Eggs and bacon every morning. Meat and maybe a bit if veg mid afternoon early evening. Rarely much between or after meals but the occasional bit of cheese or olives if I'm peckish. Have missed bread and potatoes but the good it seems to have done my body is worth missing out.
@@mattargar3857 Oh wow, that's great, Mat. Don't try to beat yourself up too much on the brief consumption of excessive carbs. .
Although I'll admit, personally when I have a cheat day, it ends disastrous for me. It's like once I get a taste of refined sugar, I can't stop consuming. 😩 For instance, for the past week, I've been doing great at intermittent fasting.
@@k9m42 Yawn.
I had noticed that any time i loaded up on sweets, my gout would return with a vengeance! Thanks for confirming my suspicions, Doctor Ken!!😊

I will address these items per your gout avoidance checklist:
I face same Mark. Uric acid is highest with keto diet
@@hifisumz Could be dehydration and high sodium. try drinking even more water.
Thank you I’m 70 years old I’ve been not eating meat, I’m diabetic 2 taking Jardiance 10 now later 25
I’m going to start eating meat.
Prednisone works miracles for me. Two 10mg pills for a couple days usually knocks the inflammation out.
Sobdid you try keto? Still having pain?
The longer you eat like that the easier it becomes. Just get the will power.
I agree with you on two levels of gout!!
Basically no one knows and is all speculation....got it. Thank you.
Absolutely crazy good information.
Thank you so much.
Personally, I don't have gout .
However, my beloved one does. And this is invaluable information..
I don't eat a fancy diet.
I stick basic.

Have you ever considered high oxalate foods? It can cause pseudo gout...I started juicing and had “gout” attacks!
Meat is acidic. Try clean diet, that is plant food and fruit diet.
So happy to know, “coffee is your friend”. ❤️
