I'm a white guy who had a big mama cause I had no one else when I was growing up. I was taken in by my grandmother and a black lady that lived in the next town over and she sang this to me and taught us the value of loving one another no matter who they are and what color they are.She always told me color is just part of God's crayon box. It is full of bright beautiful colors and some dim colors also. So the song is an old Negro spiritual from times long gone but I thank these ladies for reminding me of how special Big mama was.

@Really 69 No not a bad thing at all. Slaves used songs with hidden messages to be interpreted either by puzzling with it, or by certain expressions they used, to share messages without the people holding the whip would know about it, or what it meant.
This particular song is not a hidden riot message or anything, but a story told about a baby who lost its parents either because they ran off, got killed, or worked to death.

This is preformed with such grace, and in a way that I can distinguish each individual clearly, or I can just absorb all three as one gorgeous harmony, but the thing I most like and appreciate is that all three respect eachother enough not to sing over the other two. Nobody had to be "the star", and that helped the song to shine. This is as close to perfect as it gets.

Life 11 years after you recorded this song is not worth living. The lies ... the hatred ... the division ... it is dreadful. But in the day you sang this song there was so much hope, so much kindred, and to some degree so much innocence. Canada abolished slavery some 40 years before Lincoln and hence the underground railway was established to Canada where blacks were given acreage upon arrival ... free of charge. Yes there was racial issues but Canada stood strong and said ever person is worthwhile in spite of what the Americans said. That is fact and that is history ... a history I am very proud of as a Canuck.

As told to me by my Grandmother.
A slave couple had a baby and kept it a secret to their owner. The owner sold the babies mother and the man kept the baby not telling anyone about it. In order to keep the child quite and hidden while the slave worked the field he would give it morphine so that it would sleep. "You and me and the devil makes three".

The ear of a professional musician always amazes me. To stay in key, to perfectly hit their notes with no instruments giving them a reference note. Just a thing of beauty.

I worked my way through college working in record stores where I grew to love everything from The Beatles, to The Jam to Keith Jarrett. We all had different tastes, but one artist we all loved from the heavy metal guys to the classical experts, and that was the beautiful Emmylou Harris. I think we basically wore out the album Elite Hotel it was played so much in the store.

Know that I am a true fan of all of these ladies. They didn't write this, but they may have written it down. My great-grandmother used to sing it to us when we were little. Let's keep it real. Southern Black folks have been singing it forever.

Not knocking it at all. She did a great job at editing. The original could be offensive if you are sensitive. I'd be glad to post if you want to know how it really goes.

    • @TheBang13

Sorry guys, but I wanted to make sure that I got all the lyrics correct. We are here in GA having our Family Labor Day celebration. While beginning the festivities with our annual fish fry, I asked two of my great-aunts (89 and 94 year olds) about the song. One of them recoiled and the other went straight into it. I played the video for them and they looked at me funny. LOL!!! Once the three of us started singing it, like 5 or 6 cousins (47-73 year olds) came over and started singing with us. Too cool! Apparently, my great-grandma either did some editing or she didn't remember all the words. We worked together and got them all. Surprisingly, my teen cousins were both entertained and shocked by the discussion about the meanings of the lyrics and have now learned it.

      Go to sleep 'lil baby
      Go to sleepy 'lil baby
Mama's gone away and Daddy's gone astray
Don't need no body but the baby
      Go to sleepy lil baby
'For the booger man get ya
      Mommie's gone
      Daddy's gone
Ain't no body but the baby
Everybody's gone but the cotton and the corn
Don't need nobody but the baby
      Don't weep lil baby
      Don't weep my baby
He done run on with the shackles still on
Ain't no body left but the baby
To the field house with the slayin'
      Master ain't even playin'
Want a little more but the robber took the store
Don't need no worries 'bout the takin'
      Go to sleep 'lil baby
      Go to sleepy 'lil baby
Come lay the bones on the alabaster stone
And leave cause the devil comin' baby
      Go to sleep 'lil baby
      Go to sleepy 'lil baby

They said that it was about a slave that stole something. They killed his wife/partner who had a baby not too long after they were searching for him. This is kind of a mean lullaby that they would sing to taunt or threaten the slaves not to run away or thieve. The way we sing it is a bit faster. Some said that it isn't really a lullaby, but more of a popular song that men used to sing doing field or rail work.
      Thoughts?

We are a lot of us descendants of Europe. I have often wondered how the American South evolved as it did with its speech , accents and customs to be so different from the North. I was born in the south but raised in the north . Spent some time in the south with family so i had the chance to experience both worlds.

Donald Hicks same here. I actually moved north well after I obtained an accent & had to teach myself a new dialect! Came in handy when I started singing opera & learning new languages though! 😜👍
