The subtle dry comedy in every microsecond of this film is an absolute joy
On word best describes this film and is good proof there's not many films like it no more and that word is classic!

I concur
Best film ever in my opinion
I like this scene because of how peaceful it is. No one was angry or upset that Delmar “cut” in line. The priest saw a man who wanted to be saved and he baptized him
I get chills everytime I watch this video. Like you said it's so peaceful and calming.
Care for some gopher😀
Love the movie 😅
They were nice Southern baptists, y'all.
" Priest ? " you're kidding, I guess
"I thought you said you was innocent of those charges."
"Well I was lying." 😂😂
My grandfather who was born in 1922 loved this movie. He was a quiet farmer, but he would put this on when I was a kid and we would watch it together. He has now passed, and watching it always makes me think of him.
I’m sorry for your grandpa mate
What a wonderful memory to have
A lovely film and a beautiful memory!
My grandpa was born in 1930 and he too loved this movie. He passed away in 2008 and my wife at the time and her sister sang this song at his funeral.
That's so cool you can relieve the experience of being with you grandpa.
Makes me feel no matter how much this world grinds you down the Lord will always guide you home.
Amen brother/sister me too 🙏
Это точно!)))
Amen brother
All right, but let me ask you something. Delbert declares himself forgiven. He says "Neither God nor man can touch me now."
I believe God does look at it that way. Do you think man looks at it that way?
He's not free.
"Care for some gopher?" That line makes me lose it everytime. 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
A third of a gopher would only arouse my appetite without satisfying it...
Probably one of the best portrayles of the spiritual and physical feeling of a genuine baptism, its a sign of public confession, but also forgiveness and redemption. Even if you don't believe in God the idea is beautiful.
“Know ye not, that so many of us as were baptized into Jesus Christ were baptized into his death? Therefore we are buried with him by baptism into death: that like as Christ was raised up from the dead by the glory of the Father, even so we also should walk in newness of life.”
Romans 6:3-4 KJV
I watch this scene about once a week.
I’m not religious, I just find it peaceful.
Then you need to look up the live version of Alison kraus and choir. Magical
You don't need to have religion to have a soul
Same.
The Lord wants to be in your life. The Lord wants your heart
Its the "knocking at the door".
Your recognizing the energy of your creator. It's calling
This scene makes my soul burst with joy, the humour and the beautiful singing and the superb writing. It's just so masterful and lovely.
I've probably seen this film a hundred times, and it always makes me cry with joy.
George Clooneys best comedy role of his career
Absolutely!
Perhaps simply his best role, period. My favorite, anyway. What role of his do you think was better than this one?
Near genious in every aspect of this film. The music is another level of simplistic excellence. Still makes me laugh after at least a dozen times since i first seen it. My son bought the DVD for my birthday when he was just 10 years old.
Coen brothers + George clooney= :)
One of my favorite lines in this movie, words to the effect, “it should be the one with the capacity for abstract thought.” I’ve used that line a couple times.
One of my favorite hymns.
1 of my only
Absolutely love it, beautiful
What is so beautiful about this song and it doesn't make sense so I need to go down to the river to pray and sing about the good old way y'all make anything a gospel song these day
i have been going to church for over 40 years and this scene in this movie is the first time i have ever heard of this song. it sounds like a hymn. i wonder what other old hymns that exist that have been forgotten
It seems to me that all Cohen's works are kind of about it: lost stories and memories, like the one of the three brothers and of the protagonists of The big Lebowski, or the protagonists of The ballad of Buster Scroogs. It's the stories nobody tells, that get lost in time.
Old-timey gospel bluegrass is beautiful, and I say that as an atheist.
I work with a church based nonprofit from the Lutheran tradition that operates at a remote wilderness site. A couple who was on long term staff had a baby, and decided to ahve her baptised. We processed from our main meeting space to the local river singing this song, and the baby was baptised in the river fhat flows through our valley.
What a lovely experience to be part of that :)@@nonenowherebye
Really? Whats your religion and where are you from? I was raised Appalachia/southern and methodist and I know this one. I think its more Appalachia
That look on Delmar's face when he started swaying and the spirit came over him...reminds me of some baptist services from my youth.
This isn't Baptist. They don't baptize for remission of sins. This is a church of Christ congregation. We sing acapella and baptize for remission of sins.
@@dsvet Yes Baptist baptize for forgiveness of sins
@@jukihiw No baptist pastor will baptized you for forgiveness of sins. They believe you are saved by belief alone and baptized later as an "outward sign of an inward grace" as a public profession of faith. Not even the primitive Baptist believe in baptism for remission of sins.
@@dsvet Ohhh I’m sorry. I misunderstood you-yes you are completely right. I thought you meant Baptist don’t baptize at all. You meant we don’t Baptist specifically for remission. Sorry for the misunderstanding ❤️
@@jukihiw no problem 👍
This scene shows that all three actors would be as comfortable on stage as on screen. What a great movie.
Brothers and Sisters , let's go down to the River to Pray and Praise the Lord , Amen
The acting, the cinematography, the soundtrack, the script, are by far some of the best in the history of major motion pictures.
The movie is a downright masterpiece of cinema and storytelling
“It’s a fool that looks for logic in the chambers of the human heart.”
The heart is desperately wicked and who can know it
The Coens could write some beautiful movie scripts
I'm Jewish Israeli, and I also work in tourism so I've been many times with Christian groups to the river Jordan. Many people come there to be baptized in the same river where Jesus was baptized according to tradition. I still think that this song is probably the best musical representation of the faith of people in redemption. It is also connected to the fact that in the film, Delmar truly tries to act righteously after being baptized. I;m of a different creed but having seen people go through this in reality and listening to the beautiful hymn always gives me a warm feeling watching this scene.
i hope you and your loved ones are safe ❤
C’mon in boys the water is fine….undoubtedly one the most underrated movies. So deep and subtle. Thank you Mr’s Coens.
The baptism scene in O Brother, Where Art Thou is a reference to the Lotus Eaters in Homer's The Odyssey. I like and appreciate how the scenes and characters mix both symbols of classic Americana with elements of Homer's epic poem.
BRO I NEVER KNEW THAT
The entire movie is just a speedrun of the Odyssey set in the Antebellum south
can you imagine though? you're in the middle of nowhere and these dozens of white-clad ethereal beings slowly glide by you singing as one. who WOULDNT follow them? there's something so fae about it even though i know it's currently a christian practice. it's definitely a kind of magic, for sure.
The Holy Spirit does feel "magical" in that it feels above this world. Heaven stirs the heart because you're made for it!
@@farid1406 Amen 🙏
@Angie Ball if He ain't magical he's certainly a wizard. Some of the stuff He pulls throughout the Bible is nothing short of magic. So I would agree with you He is magical.
That's a fabulous comment!
I love these comments. I have followed Jesus since 1984, and whilst it is true that God is way beyond magic, there is something about the word that captures how music, nature and art can captivate and point us to the Eternal. Go well friends.
My granny used to sing this when we’d watch it with her as little kids and we’d sing a long ❤️
This movie is just brilliant. The story, the acting, the scenery and the beautiful songs.
This makes me cry. Its like somewhere I want desperately to be. Such a catch 22 for me, my social anxiety keeps me separated from people
🙃
Pray earnestly for God to give you a new heart and guide you to the truth.
I saw this film 5x at the theater, family friends whoever hadn't seen it at the time I took 😀
Words don't begin to describe how much I love this film, especially the music!!!
Yes indeed the cinematography is amazing, great film. The Cohen brothers made a complete masterpiece with this one.
I have the soundtrack and I listen to it quite often, it’s such a masterpiece!
Agreed. Everything about this film is just beautiful! It's a purely joyful film!
It's a work of art
George - “Merry Christmas! I’m a Fan of your Movies. UA-cam Jonny Weiss “Highway to America” Song.
My cinema class is watching this right now and I can't express the amount of tears of joy I held back and peace and harmony I felt in my soul from the people singing this song. I swore I heard this before and I never knew the name until now. I'm Christian but am not really super religious or anything but this song makes me appreciate all that God and Jesus has done for me and for others.
I never got baptized but my soul did when it heard this song.
As a born again, baptised Christian who has experienced firsthand the redeeming salvation of Jesus, this is one of my favourite scenes in the history of film!
Nothing can transform a life like Jesus coming into your heart!
Me too brother. When Jesus comes into our hearts it's the best thing ever. I sing this song in Church when no-one else is there. A moment between my Saviour and me. Folks, it's real and it works. The Lord done washed away my sins and transgressions. Come on folks. Rev Dave
Have you seen The Mission? DeNiro does the most heart wrenching scene of a man realizing he is forgiven.
@@wideawake5630 I have not seen that, but now feel compelled to look for it!
I love this song. I believe it’s about stopping and going to your place of comfort and praying to god for guidance and being close to god. 🙏🏻✝️♥️
blah blah blah
Such a beautiful song. Being raised in the South, with so much gospel influence, the movie has such a special meaning to me bc I was living in Nashville at the time it was released. Music City couldn't get enough of the music and I've personally been smitten ever since. ❤
That is just so beautiful, what a beautiful life god has gifted to you
This was one of my grandmothers favorite songs. She was a young teenager during this time period. She said her family always had gospel music playing on the radio.
I wish I could explain why, but this song makes me emotional. I’m not religious or spiritual but I just can’t help it, I tear up every time
God speaks to every one of us, most of us are too distracted to hear the voice of God in our heart. Deep inside our soul yearns for the connection to God through the Holy Spirit, the world is deafening distraction to try and cancel that out.
That's the Holy Spirit, beloved!
the power of music
I’m 22 but when I was a very young child my mom would play this song, as well as “I am a man of constant sorrow”, for me. For years I thought she must’ve been very pious back then but she recently told me that she had this on CD from the movie soundtrack 😂. Still a very beautiful song that reminds me of my early childhood.
I sang this in a church talent show an won, thank you Oh Brother Where Art Thou!
Congrats!
@@stonedwalljack9276 thank you!
Brought tears to my eyes and never herd of this b4 THANK YOU ,
"Its the fool who searches logic in the chambers of human heart" - I love it, so applicable on so many occasions 😂
What a masterpiece this is! Became a Coen fan after Raising Arizona but this is a whole nother level. Never paid much attention to George Clooney (yeah he's pretty nuff) but knew he had to be special after seeing this. Definitely bona fide dude.
That sin’s been WARSHED away too 😂😂😂😂
Doesn’t get any better, classic will be listened to 100 years from now
I'm not religious, but this song is divine and brings me joyous tears every time.
If you love this song like I do, I highly recommend watching the Colorado All-State Treble Choir singing it in the atrium of a hotel during a competition. I think it's one of the most beautiful songs ever written for treble voices.
"I thought you said you was innocent of those charges!" Clooney fucking rules in this movie haha.
As a young teenager I had the privilidge to grow up in what little bit of the old south that remained...I miss those days
"Including the Piggly Wiggly in Yazoo" LoL
You don’t have to believe to enjoy the results of other peoples faith. Any music that comes from people with a sense of place or faith is always beautiful. Just sit back shut up and enjoy it. Just because your an atheist doesn’t mean you can’t appreciate a good choir.
I like this even though I’m not Christian it just hits
I believe in God and biblical values but don't focus only on Christ .....this definitely hits .... morality is on the decline and the structures of man are crumbling....when I hear this I'm ok with it
@@douglasmitchel942 your beliefs are your beliefs. I’m just vibing to the song bro.
You don’t need to be religious to appreciate the beauty of a gospel song.
@@KINGDENZEL_4the song is sort of about what he's saying though
that sounds like Alison Krauss' singing
I used to rent this movie every Friday night from Hollywood Video, was a family tradition to go each weekend, and as a 7-12 year old, I was constantly obsessed with this movie. I knew nothing about it, simply rented it based on the VHS cover. Still love it at 30!\
Praise the LORD!
Following the outline of Homer's ODYSSEY, the congregation are a substitute for The Lotus Eaters.
A touching heartwarming scene .
Tim Blake Nelson is one of our greatest actors!!! In fact, he's one of the greatest actors of all time!!!! He's one of the best!!
Agreed he’s awesome
Holes would be a another great example of acting from him

Why did you need to be saved?
@@stephenlyon1358 Would you not wish to be saved? Would you refuse a lifeboat when you are stranded in an ocean?
@@JonathanToolonie who says we are stranded in an ocean?
@@JonathanToolonie It’s a simple question, really. Why did you choose to undergo that ritual? At what point in your life did you decide that the Almighty was your only solution? What was going on in your life before you made that decision?
Our choir will be singing this precious piece on Sunday and I can't wait. Love, love, love it and the message.
Not the preacher, the son of god. Washed your sins away. Praise god.
God bless all of you!
THANK YOU AND GOD BLESS FOR THIS COMEDY!!🙏🇺🇲👍🏻😊
As a Pagan i grew up on this movie. This song is and always be my favorite.
God has spoken to an atheist through this song praying you are lead to the light.
Never in my life did I ever laugh so hard this is one of favourites,I was hoping maybe a second one, people need hope and faith and to laugh,Thank you George Clooney and all the actors and actresses,we need more of these kinds of movies thank you again 👍
I have always loved this song
I love this movie & all my brothers & sisters in Christ
My favorite scene. I can almost smell the river and feel heat and humidity.
It's a fool who looks for logical in a human heart ❤️

Love this song!
God is the answer 🙏 ❤
I LOVE THIS MOVIE 🎬 I LOVE THE MUSIC 🎶
One of the greatest movies ever made.
I've loved this show and ALL of the songs within.
This scene makes me cry happy tears every time. I love how you can hear the voices but don't understand at first, but then all of a sudden you hear the congregation burst into song. I know it's not an overtly religious movie, but this scene makes me think of how much I love the Savior Jesus Christ 🥹
I like how delmar jumped in front of everyone.
Wonderful just looking at the eyes of the brother who runs towards redemption. I somehow reminds me of Pirandello's short novel "Ciaula scopre la luna".
This is my favorite movie of all time, I've seen it at least 30 times. I mean, I love everything the Cohen brothers touch.... But this one is special
Please Moovie name bro..
The genius of the Coen Brothers ability to create dialogue is almost frightening. In my opinion they are on par with the world greats.
Even as an atheist, this is a beautiful scene with the singing.
I think it won an award for best soundtrack
MASTERPIECE!!! Movie and soundtrack!!
Definitely,So many brilliant lines, take Michael Badalucco 'Baby face Nelson' "Jesus saves, but George Nelson WITHDRAWS!" & the casting was spot on with so many actors, like the women bank customer who comment hurt George's feelings, where did they find her...
That film is surreal. George clooney (and others) are great in it
Lmao Tim Blake Nelson kills me in this movie
I love this movie so much! i never tire from watching it
I can't believe my grandparents, who are both alive and active, were alive during this time.
How I am coming out of the confession booth each week 🙂 Then awashed with the heavenly mass, with the real presence of the world's saviour entering my soul. Thank you Jesus Christ, for Catholic priests & the Holy Mass❤️🔥🙂
