I'm from Scotland I'm 31 I heard this song from the show the blacklist I heard it the day before I had to get my dog that i had since i was 17 bitter-sweet song for me
I just lost my sister 6 weeks ago and she was such a believer in GOD all her life. This is a song I'm sure she heard and loved but we never heard it together. My condolences to you and your family Tyler. I have 7 sisters left and it's hard when 1 passes.
The only instrument is the voice. REAL voices. Beautiful!! As an aside, please notice Alison's humility at the end. She has one of the great voices of her time, yet she defers to her backing singers, understanding what it is all about.
Her voice is as smooth as butter. Gives me chills. So unfortunate she’s a dying breed. They don’t make them like her anymore. Kacey Musgraves would be the only voice I can think of similar to Allison’s.
I was shocked when John Hartford appeared at the end, and 'Drunken Presbyterian' was cut short. John was a master of the fiddle and setting the mood. He really augmented the song and chorus. I got to play with him once, at a city festival. What a great man! But a half hour before he was to go on, he went off into a corner and got his head ready for the show. The sign of a real pro.
Of course I had been aware of Alison as an artist for some years, however it was Down To The River To Play that stopped me in my tracks, just so beautiful and uplifting thank you for this song.
Oldie but goodie. Some lost gems on the Holla. Got a journal from 1800 with seven songs to sing at the time. Not a muscian but harmony and lyrics judt just beautiful as this. Love to pass it on to serious group as these folks
Down In The River To Pray. But who cares. Close eyes and open heart, mind and ears and enjoy. Then hit repeat and enjoy again and again. Soul cleansed?
Come on in the water feels fine. All my SIN'S have been washed away! Pass on the good word!! To all that don't believe Jesus loves us all, all you need is to come on down!! (Use the water). All sin's will be forgiven! Let our lord show you the way.
I collect old gospel songs and picked up on this one after viewing the movie "Oh Brother Where Art Thou." I also sing Bass in our church choir, and will propose we sing this song in our next performance. Bless you all!!
I am an Atheist but there is something about Gospel songs that is irresistible, especially when they are sung by someone with the voice of an angel, but this proves Angels aren't real, otherwise Allison would have Wings!
@@tysondavis7257 Bullshit, I like Gospel songs, I like the philosophy of Religion, love your neighbor etc, doesn't mean I think there is a Fairy living in the sky, The book of Bullshit is full of Bullshit, Of course there is something out there greater than us, nature and the universe, they will be here long after we are gone and they do not give a flying F*ck about us,. we are insignificant, there is NOTHING or no one out there that loves YOU! Get over it!
They changed a single word so it would fit the Oh Brother where art there scene. The original song is down in the Valley to pray but it was changed to River.
vonbogroff, must say that the song and those that sang are priveledged to best us and be blessed by their heart felt worship. The world would & will be a much better place when humanity consumes more of this blessed/humble/and yet SO Powerful display of true Christian Behavior. Amen?
Praise the Lord for these vocalists an their humble hearts to be examples/instruments of the Holy Spirit. Our Nation will be a better place when we follow this type of Christion Behavior. Amen? 🙏🇺🇸
Please elaborate on that statement. I have met Miss Alison a couple of times over the last few years, and I haven't seen any signs of a problem. If I had to say anything about her it would be that I think she is lonely, living on the road so much. But that's just my opinion and doesn't mean anything.
@TwoLadsAndALady I do not reject his love, I reject his existence. I can and will not love anything that I don't even have reason let alone proof that it exists.
No matter who you are. Where your from. What you believe. You can find it in your heart to appreciate the spiritual aspect of this song
well said
It's about baptism, so it IS a religious song.
I'm from Scotland I'm 31 I heard this song from the show the blacklist I heard it the day before I had to get my dog that i had since i was 17 bitter-sweet song for me
It keeps me strong for my little one
God her voice is a gift from heaven. She's one vocalist who doesn't need any equipment to sound great. She's naturally talented.
A Capella separates the contenders from the pretenders.
You got that right

We sang this song for my sister at her funeral she was so very beautiful and I miss her so very much!

hi
THeree should be a "o brother were art thou " musical!
Man I love the movie and the music!
There are many groups who do this song beautifully but to me Allison is the person that the song belongs to.
Her voice is as smooth as butter. Gives me chills. So unfortunate she’s a dying breed. They don’t make them like her anymore. Kacey Musgraves would be the only voice I can think of similar to Allison’s.
Her voice is just so angelic she doesn't even need music to back up her voice. Just beautiful
'Down From the Mountain', the source of that clip, is -- for my money -- one of the best music documentaries ever made.
Thank you very much for the reference.

Its the sound of the mountains. Either Appalachia or the Highlands. Doesn't matter its home.
i love this song!!!!!!!
Her voice is as clear in articulation as Jim Reeves
Even if you’re not religious, you still feel this. There’s something about this song that makes you feel at peace.
No kidding
So touching.
Wow - so so beautiful. Spitzen klasse.
The little grin right at the end. Allison is saying, "yeah, I got this."
Amazing. True angel voice.
Down In The River To Pray.
But who cares. Close eyes and open heart, mind and ears and enjoy. Then hit repeat and enjoy again and again.

Wow! The closed captions really tell a story.

The fact you find it irresistible tells me you are not an atheist, it means you accept there is something greater than us.

Cool song. Works really nice in Oh Brother Where Art thou
I am atheist but this song is just so amazing, her voice is beautiful
Love this song. HOWEVER, Alison's soul is in danger. She needs our prayers.
Please elaborate on that statement. I have met Miss Alison a couple of times over the last few years, and I haven't seen any signs of a problem. Gotta clarify. I am a UU. Alison Kraus has a great voice. This is a song to sooth. To help one to sleep.
Thanks so very much

uh, I'm fairly certain "Brother Where Art Thou" IS a musical. I could be mistaken, but all the musical numbers in the film kind of back me up.
awesome
Meravigliosa
Such a beautiful angelic voice with a lot of power behind it. Could have listened to hear her sing more of the song.
OMG she looks like Hillary Swank with her hair done like that! Oh, beautiful song btw!
