And now, Tom Smothers is gone. Had a long life, made a lot of people laugh. They stuck to their principles, produced great comedy...RIP, Tom Smothers. Thanks for the memories.
In the early 60's when they were starting out folk singing was very popular. They were guests on the "Ed Sullivan Show" as well as a folk singing variety show called "Hootenany" which I only watched for "The Smothers Brothers," "Peter, Paul, and Mary" and "The Kingston Trio". I was only 5 or 6 at the time, or would have realized just how many musical icons were guests on that show at the beginning of their careers.😮😮❤
Most people mention a lot about them being a great comedy duo but forget to mention that they were musically talented as well. RIP Tommy Smothers you'll truly be missed. 🙏
This video perfectly captures their talent. Just when you are doubting them because of their comedy, they turn it around and finish with a well performed song.
I never actually enjoyed their comedy. I found it to be forced and artificial, mainly dependent upon pretended stupidity. I didn’t appreciate that. I always loved the music.
The comedy was gold...Always! But the wonderful harmonies and the lovely songs they chose to perform were always so special. Truly masters at entertaining and causing us to laugh and think at the same time, the Smothers Brothers have left a joyous and thoughtful mark on our world. Goodbye Tommy, you did well.
I was a young child when their show was on CBS but I certainly remember watching it and it was one of my favorites. Sonny & Cher, Carol Burnett, the Bob Hope and Andy Williams Christmas specials....those were the good old days for sure. 😊
I used to watch their TV show, very entertaining n mostly silly. But I had forgotten just how beautifully they could sing together. Lovely harmony, thanks for posting
I've noticed before that family members often blend well when singing. I think it comes from having the same accent and pacing of their syllables. Also a similar timbre.
My god, they were so young, and I had forgotten how talented! A breath of fresh air during the horrible years of the '60s. Rest in peace, Tommy. "Waist deep in the big muddy, and the big fool said to move on..." Some of us do remember.
Wow! I was looking and looking for this, an example of these two guys singing a whole song start to finish, without throwing in jokes. They did it! The comedy came first, and then nothing but great playing and harmony. Yay!
Nothing beats sibling harmony There are other individual songs... Some examples: "Long Time Blues", "That's My Song", "Down In the Valley". There are also full or half albums. On "Two Sides of the Smothers Brothers", the second side is all singing. Dick has a solo album. There is an album that I think is called "The Smothers Brothers Play It Straight".
@@DanielBarberMusic I wish the albums would use them playing instead of using an orchestra (or whatever it is). There are some songs that have limited jokes , or they will sing a verse straight and do jokes, and then sing another verse straight. I count those because at least they finish the song eventually. As time went on, they seem to have given up finishing songs. Some more I can think of... Black Is the Color of My True Love's Hair, I Never Will Marry, Mediocre Fred (Tom solo), Tom's Song (Tom solo), Jenny Brown
I agree with all the positive comments. This is a beautiful rendition. It also demonstrates there is another way to provide variation other than the ubiquitous practice of changing keys. One can also change the tempo, whether slower, or faster as here. Bravo.
Incredibly talented. Very rare in today’s entertainment industry. It is genuinely a great loss for Dick and Tom’s family. They broke the mold when these two were made. RIP Tommy 🙏
Many people today might be surprised to know the Smothers brothers did serious folk music. They were well known in the early 60’s during the folk music era. Tommy was the comedic genius who brought them international fame on many variety shows and their own comedy show on CBS. I was honored to meet both of them about 20 years ago. It’s hard to believe that Tommy has passed on now. He will be missed.
I felt a loss when I heard of Tommy's passing. But he will live on in videos as long as we watch them. I'm grateful for this one. Great song. Great harmonies. Great musicians, besides being hilarious. There will never be another brother act like them.
They finished the song! I love the comedy, but there's a part of me that wants to hear the songs in their entirety. I love their music as much as the comedy.
They really could sing and play beautifully. What really made them special was that tension. You knew that Tommy was going to do some mischief but you never knew what form it would take. With the passing of Tommy, it’s like part of my childhood is gone. RIP Tommy. We miss you already.
😆You do know “mechiah” is an actual Hebrew word. It refers to a welcome, refreshing intervention. Like a breeze on a stiflingly hot day. Said breeze would be a mechiah. Btw, he pronounced it perfectly!👏🏻 10/‘23. Man, I miss them.
I pray the warmth of the sun, the breeze of mechiah, and shalom of those who drank from the water of Marah after Moshe threw in the branch and also who followed the statutes of Yahweh as he spoke to His people while at Marah. I suppose that's a long blessing in the zeitgeist of today. Peace.
@carolinchicago so that means he died later that year the day after Christmas. Sad he's gone but happy that it looks like he performed (hopefully happily) until nearly the very end.
In 2004 I was working at La Guardia airport the Delta shuttle. One of the brothers walked up to me to get a ticket. I recognised the one with the moustache. I was so happy to see him. So friendly. As most of the workers there didn’t know who he was.
I have an LP record, THE TWO SIDES OF THE SMOTHER BROTHERS. On the first side there are recordings of the comedy numbers and on the side there are recordings of songs which you can enjoy. I agree with missing the brothers.
“Paint your Wagon”. Harve Presnell sang this song in the movie. Folk songs are some of the best forms of music and song. Loved to watch The Smothers Brothers Comedy Hour. Tommy Smothers was one the funniest and cutest men alive. Just adorable. Dick was always the serious one. Handsome, too! But, boy, could he sing! According to Tommy, their mother loved Dick the best. That was always part of their comedy routine. Was heartbroken when their show was canceled as they wouldn’t bow down to the powers that be nor compromise their principles. RIP, Tommy Smothers!
I worked for them on their CBS comeback show (the 80’s). Behind the scenes they could be intense, but more often than not they were funny and playful. I had forgotten what precise musicians and excellent vocalists they could be. Great pacing and amazing harmony in this song. RIP Tommy!
God Bless The Smothers Brothers----I'm SO lucky I grew up in the time when they were making their music, comedy, and shows. They were funny, handsome, talented---and never had to stoop to being foul-mouthed, ever. Thank You, Tommy! Thank you, Dicky!
Such a musical duet with a zany innocent craziness of Tom. We loved them and their fightw with the network to present things to the public. The execs could not control Tom and it made them crazy. We loved the for it.
I remember watching these two for many years on television, but never realized how very talented they were musically!! Tommy was always my favorite, but this clip showcases Dick's wonderful singing voice!! Ah, the things we take for granted when we're young!!

I just needed to remember that although history repeats itself, it doesn't necessarily repeat in the manner we think it will.

Beautiful rendition of a song from "Paint Your Wagon". They were always one of my favorite folk music groups along with the Chad Mitchell Trio (before John Denver joined it).
They Call the Wind Maria"is an American popular song with lyrics written by Alan J. Lerner and music by Frederick Loewe for their 1951 Broadway musical Paint Your Wagon, which is set in the California Gold Rush.

I was fortunate enough to see them perform live in 2007. I was 3rd row center. It was magnificent!
Beautifully performed. Just to clarify, the song was written by Lerner and Loewe for "Paint Your Wagon".
Sung by Harbor Presnel in movie. Beautiful.
Harve Presnell. Better than this version.

I haven’t heard this since I was a teen in the ‘80’s! This brings back such memories!
I remember the episode they did this song. Never forgot it. Hauntingly beautiful.
This one of the great songs from the musical Paint Your Wagon. It was also a good movie that had Lee Marvin and Clint Eastwood singing of all people.
Well, we all would have been better off without Lee Marvin & Clint's singing, but the rest were great singers.
Not a Dutch folk song. Written in 1951 by Lerner and Lowe in USA.

I'm a bad speller, however I thought it was Mariah😊
It's pronounced Mariah, but if you had the cast album from Paint Your Wagon, you'd see that it's spelled Maria.
