Moral of the story: your airpods aren't broken, your ears are just effing dirty
Technically, ears clean itself... Just we keep putting stuff inside (qtip, earphones, ear plugs) that it can't have the wax naturally fall out with the debris collected. Overall; earbuds are a sewage blockage.

I clean my AirPods once a week and I gotta say they’ve lasted me 3 years and they still sound great!
what do you clean them with?
@@alexhaile259 water and two drops of dish soap in a mug. Microwave for a minute, take the mug out and put a toothbrush in the mug for about 30 seconds, take out the toothbrush shake it off (to get rid of excess water)and lay it down face up. Then scrub the AirPods grill on the bristles and even tap on it so the bristles puncture the grill slightly to get wax out. Then give it two nice blows and leave face down to dry.

Been using earphones for over 20 years and never suffered from low volume. I clean them once a week which take a min or two and they never get to this stage. Also.. it does help to clean your ears every time you step out of the shower
dont put q tips in your ears, use ear drops instead (idk much dont rely on me)

Watching this at 2 am hits different
This made me realize how I need to keep cleaning my ears plus my AirPods. I noticed my music was sounding muffled and ugly. I thought it was my ears so I have them a good deep clean but they were still sounding muffled with the music. I took a look at the AirPods and they looks very clean and couldn't see any earwax around the edges like in this video. Seeing the closeup of the holes in the AirPod mesh piece, I thought that the tiniest bits of earwax had been blocking those holes. I grabbed some isopropyl alcohol and a toothbrush and gave the AirPods a good clean. Once the AirPods were done drying, I put them in my ears again and music came blasting so loudly out of the AirPods. I lowered the volume and I realized I've been listening to music at about 70% volume (comfort level) and now they're lowered at 40% (comfort level).
They told us graphic warning.

I try to keep up on the ol ear cleaning best i can but even after enough time i had this problem too. I used a syringe dropper and nail polish remover one drop each let its sit for about 10-15 sec, used the same style cut brush and a wooden toothpick, followed up by the vacuum. Thank you for saving me loads of time and money!

Mine are exactly like this, I need to clean them so badly. I clean them regularly with a toothpick/q tip but every time you clean them a tiny bit gets pushed down into the vents and eventually it builds up. I also naturally produce a lot of earwax no matter how much I clean my ears so that doesn’t help much.

Apple are really great at designing vents, grills and holes that clog up… the PowerBook/MacBook cooling fan, the lightning port/iPhone mic holes, the airpod mesh. They could’ve just designed a headphone that allowed standard rubber/foam replacement attachments, but nooo they just had to make something different, that doesn’t even work properly with a lot of peoples ear canal shapes.

The Airpods Pro go inside your ear canal but are easier to clean because you can remove the tip and wash it. I never had wax all the way on the speaker with the pros.

Everytime I wake up or immediately after a shower I have to clean my ears. If I'm about to head out and put my earphones in, I rethink about the last little bit of ear wax I seen on a small edge and got grossed out. Now I will never forget this video

Also one reason I use earphones with those silicone cushions that you can take off and clean, thus leaving the mesh free of ear contaminates.
It makes me kind of wish you could take the mesh off and clean it, then reattach it. That should be a feature in the newer models.

wait, does this happen due to the airpod's design (concave part trapping ear wax)? from reading comments, it sounds like ppl need to clean them once a week. with regular earbuds, I never have to clean them, so do airpods trap ear wax for sure and require weekly cleaning?
I use blue tac. That blue stuff to hold posters to walls. That pulls everything out in one maybe two shots. My AirPod pros look brand new at all times.

This video is awesome. The sound on my AirPods was really quiet and unbalanced so I was thinking of buying new ones. I cleaned them using a low-budget technique based on the video (put a bit of hand sanitizer on the speaker, take a toothpick and run it along the mesh to dislodge the earwax, use a toothbrush to remove the sanitizer and removed wax, suck on the end to try to unblock the holes, repeat). It didn’t take long and the sound was totally fixed and balanced, they seemed brand new. If you’re having sound issues with your AirPods, try cleaning them before throwing them away!
