Brakes Clunking After Brake Job | Brand New Brake Pads Clunk/Knocking Sound
Вставка

- This is a common issue when brake pads are manufactured with the incorrect tolerances. The pad has up/down movement in the bracket, causing and audible knock/click/clunk sound when switching from drive to reverse and braking. You may be able to create a solution with shims etc, but in this case I went ahead and replaced the pads and returned the old ones. I also went with a different manufacturer for the new pads.

Incredibly useful video showing the problem, the cause and the cure.
Sometimes I get frustrated in the garage as an amateur DIYer so the idea is quick videos/tricks to help people in a bind. No long intros or explanations, just straight content. Let me know what you would like to see more of!
Great video, thanks a lot. Having this same problem and was told that it’s the strut. Replaced the strut and the problem still there. Thanks to you, I know the real problem
A mechanic that is good at diagnosing AND honest is hard to find! Good luck!
I have this noise on my 2016 Q50 3.0t ever since i changed my brakes! Ill definitely check them to make sure this is the issue but it sound exactly like it! Thanks for this video!
Let's hope for a quick and easy fix... good luck!
I'll have to check for this on my wife's car tomorrow! Only happens on the left side, even after new brakes (same model as the last brake pad though). Thanks for the tip!
Isn't it annoying? Good luck!
Will try that tomorrow. Will be very happy if that works.
I just rechecked the torque on all the bolts because of this noise. I have the extra hardware to prevent this rattle, but I guess a thin piece of steel isn't going to stop a giant truck from pushing pads forward and backward. Great video, thanks a lot!
Thank you and you're welcome!
Yesss this is exactly the noise I have on my 2014 Polo. Weirdly the noise only started after it was valeted 🤷🏻♀️
Believe I finally found the right “noise”.
I’ll check my brakes when I’m available. Should be the same issue
Hi there, thanks for sharing this video. I recently had new front discs and pads and this knocking / clunking noise has been driving me insane. Only really noticeable when I’m braking and slowing down to a stop but it’s this exact noise. I thought maybe it could be braking hard on new brakes but I haven’t been doing this. If this is the issue, does it require new pads again or is there a work around so that it’s not a waste of new pads? Is this happening because the wrong pads have been put on by the garage? Thanks
Change the beake pads from inside outside and then check. It fixed my problem.Same installed new break pads and start this sound only on one side
Good idea!
Thanks for the video, very helpful, I’ll try on my Touareg 2005
You're welcome!
Thank you very much unbelievably helpful I thought I fked up the install but my right front rotor only came with one loose clip not two like the other ones I got that day
Sorry to hear! You're very welcome!
I did my rear pads using aftermarket pads on a bmw 2017 x5 and then then got that sound, but it seems that sound is coming from the front though.
Hell yeah thank you brotha
💪
Did you messure the pads!?
YESSSSSSSSSSS !!! Just proves that you can type in the most arbitrary string of words together in UA-cam and you WILL find a video. haha I just replaced all 4 rotors and all pads and my front driver side was making this clunking noise but just in reverse. I'll take the caliper off again and I am sure I'll find the same movement in the pad. I'll check the pad wear level indicators to see if I've bent it to much that would allow that movement.
Honestly that's what inspired me to make these videos, sometimes, albeit RARELY, you can't find the one video you're looking for 🤣
I haven't taken the tire off yet to take a look. One other thing is it could be the rotor. I didn't get OEM (I got Bosch) for my highlander. So it's possible the clunking is from the rotor bolt holes being too large. I'd think I'd hear it from all 4 tires (but then again, I am on the driver's side) I'll have my wife listen to the other side of the car to see if the sound comes from the other tires) I'll let you know
@@TheK9Shepherd I doubt the rotor bolt holes are the issue, when you torque the lug nuts, it clamps the hell out of the rotor to the hub. So even those little gaps in the bolt holes won't matter so long as the rotor is sitting flat and flush on the hub lip.
Definitely gonna try and see if my car problem is caused by this. I did brake job and i have same noise. Thought the caliper piston was retracting but could just be the pads not having correct clearance
Definitely check it out, it should be a straight forward diagnosis!
I have the exact same problem with my new BMW fitted OEM discs and pads!
That sucks you have to deal with it... never heard of it happening with an OEM!
Thank you for the video. I just did the front and rear brakes on my 2017 Golf Sportwagen and it has the same knocking sound. The sound is coming from the front driver and passenger side and it is driving me nuts. I thought maybe I didn't bed them in properly but I'm glad I stumbled on this video because this looks and sounds just like it. I initially went with Bosch Questcast pads thinking it's a good brand but I guess I was wrong. I will have to look at TRW or Zimmerman.
Sucks that you even have to deal with this, good luck!
@@GibbysGarage15I just bought another set of front pads and they do the exact same thing. I’m gutted really but I think it has nothing to do with the size of the pads (because I measured the after market pads with the OEM’s and they are the same), however I think it has something to do with the material on the back of the pads. My old OEM pads had a texturized backing which probably allowed the caliper to grip the back of the pads more securely. The aftermarket pads have a shiny metal surface that would allow movement, especially if you grease the inside of the caliper that touches the back of the pads. Anyway that’s my theory. I have been on these newer pads for almost a month and the sounds haven’t disappeared.
@@euroglx Hmmm.. maybe your bracket is out of spec. The caliper gripping the pad is a non issue I think, there's no way it can overcome the frictional force of the pads/rotors. They pads should fit snugly.
@@euroglx I'm experiencing the same with 2nd set of pads, have you resolved this since this last post ?
Nice video. I was hoping to find solution to my problem but I did not see it. I don't have grinding or squeaking noise.
I just replaced both front and back Brake pads and Rotors on my BMW 328i. I followed all of your tips. However, when I press brake pedal and move car gear to drive it makes noise. But as soon as I take foot off brake pedal slowly and start driving there is no noise and brake operates fine, when I stop at stop sign little slowly moving or traffic light there is no noise. It make noise when making completely hard stop same thing happens. when I stop car on my driveway and move to park it makes same noise. rotor wear seems ok, but too soon to judge. I have Detroit Axle - Brake Kit for BMW 323i Wagon 325Ci 325i 328Ci 328i Drilled Slotted Disc Brake Rotors Ceramic Brakes Pads Replacement 11.81" inch Front and 11.57" inch Rear Rotor. I would appreciate your help.
Thanks,

Appreciate the comment. Does it make the noise when going forward and hard stopping once, and only again when you reverse and brake hard? In other words, it will do it going forward only once, and it will only make the noise again when changing direction front or back?
Thanks for the video.
You can also put a perfectly cut metal piece between the pad ears and the bracket, and fix it to the bracket with a drop of water resistant glue (e.g rtv silicone). Its not ideal but you don't waste a set of brake pads.
Some cars (and pad sets) come with anti rattle shims that fix into the bracket instead of the pad, and many of these have a tiny piece of dark metal below (between the shim and the bracket) to "raise" the sim, i got the idea from these.
After that, you can put a tiny amount of silicone grease on the pad's ears to prevent seize and improve movement.
I'll try that next time! I did find it odd this assembly did not have any kind of anti rattle clip aside from the little ones on the pad (they do not stop up/down movement). Sometimes I wonder if it would be better not to clean the brackets when installing new pads.
@GibbysGarage15 You can have a better idea about the entire shims set that come for that specific car by looking at the catalog from some decent brands like akebono directly from their website. I have a 98 Camry and didn't know that the oem pads come with tiny holes at the top where some sort of springs go, to slightly release the pads from the rotor when you are not using the brakes. It's overwhelming how every tiny piece of the car has some sort of engineering that many aftermarket parts just omit , I am yet to find rear pads that come with these springs.
What pads did you use to fix the issue? I'm running into the same issue with my GTI and was wondering if there was a decent aftermarket option, or if I would have to go OEM. Thanks!
I used Power Stop pads. You're welcome!
Thanks!@@GibbysGarage15
Thanks for the video. I never thought brake pads could cause such clanking noises. I have a weird problem, although it's similar, I'm not sure if it's the axle shaft or the brakes. Could you help? I know that my axle shafts are going bad as they created a clicking/clanking noise when I turned the wheel at slow speeds. But that's an old story. A couple of weeks ago, I had both my front and back rotors resurfaced and the brake pads changed. My brother took the car to a hill station on his vacation after that. Now, when I turn the wheel, I can hear the clicking noise, but in addition to that known problem, I can hear the clicking noise when I brake, start the car from idle, or go over a bump. What could be the reason? Did the axle shaft really go bad after his hill drive, which usually involves a lot of turns, or is it the new brake pads? Like you mentioned, it's so hard to find mechanics who are true to their heart and have the patience and knowledge to look into the issues. Thank you.
Only way to approach this would be a process of elimination. I would take the wheel off and check for play in the brake pad like in the video. Sometimes when they clean things up really good, and use a new brake pad, it could create a gap between the pad and bracket. If that looks good, and there's no excessive play in the pad, I would go ahead and fix the axles since that needs to be done anyway. The usual approach, when trouble diagnosing, is to start where it's free/cheap first, and move up from there. I feel your pain, cars can be tricky to diagnose even for the seasoned technician. Good luck, I'd love to hear back!
Having the same issue, gonna check it out today when i get back home. I did notice one of the brake pad holders was slightly bent and i dont remember if i moved it around to see if it was moving after being placed in its housing
Definitely have another look.. frustrating!
wish i found this vid sooner lol spent 3 days under car checking bolts to realize its vertical pad movement making clunk...
At least you found it now! Car clunks can drive anyone crazy lol
Having the same issue after new pads and rotors. Is it safe to drive like this? Or should i get new pads that are OEM?
I don't see this being an issue safety wise so long as this is indeed the issue!
I noticed that there were no pad tab/ear shims in the caliper bracket in the video. I'm having same issue WITH shims. New rotor and pads job. Maybe when cleaning the rust from the bracket where the pad ears go, it created a gap because of loss of metal. I would think over a little time, enough gunk would get back in there and close the gap.... Depending on how many times the brakes have been changed , and the groove filed and /or wire brushed clean, a new bracket may be in order. But sometimes in the manufacturing process, the pad casting is off. I've had to file down new pad ears before.
On this car the "shims" are kind of built into the pad. But they only tighten the radial direction, not the up/down, so you're really at the mercy of the engineers and manufacturers sometimes.
Anti rattle clips
Clunk is good. That means the pad is freely moving and not seized
Common problem with certain pad manufacturers.
Find a pad that fits and stick with them 👍🏻
I used to be a fan of Centric but they seemed to have dropped off recently.
Is this the same with intermittent clicking when driving. Pressing brake pedal stops it. Take off and happens again. Press again and stops. Had brembo pads and discs recently and only happened after that
If I'm understanding correctly, it seems like a different problem. I would check it over to make sure everything is tightened and assembled properly.
I got a similar issue after replacing both rear discs and pads. Only the left side makes clicking metal sound when braking at low speed. But the noise not always.
Sometimes they go away on their own as brake dust builds up in the gaps.
@@GibbysGarage15 thanks. So mostly likely it was not installed incorrectly? Or else it the brake wouldn't work? The noise is not always.
@@mrahman1407 It's hard for me to say without physically seeing it
i never saw brake clips sold with pads. did you have to ask for them?
This particular design doesn't have separate hardware for the caliper
Mine does it when brake and sometimes turnin
I pad slapped brakes on rusty rotors and it makes this sound is that cause the rotors are rusty or is it the pads themselves?
Sounds like it's probably the rotors.
this also happened to my golf after i put in new pads and rotors. so its not the rotors? it the cheap pads i bought to replace the OEM. i got these RS Parts pads from partsavatar for super cheap. i was been driving with them for 3 months now. is it dangerous?
Usually this type of problem goes away after a while of driving from brake dust/crud filling the space between the pad ears and the bracket. Do you notice the problem getting worse, the same, or improving?
@@GibbysGarage15 hi mate can you please help me i have got my brake pads changed they are new brake pads they are making the exactly same knocking sound like this car in the video what do i need to do what do i need to tell my mechanic
@@imranali-wz2qf If it's diagnosed as the same problem in the video... you could tell your mechanic to look at it again if you like. It's not anything dangerous, more of an annoyance.
@@GibbysGarage15 thank you buddy the first thing im gonna do tomorrow is take my car to my mechanic and tell him to sort my brakes out my brakes are actually good quality they are nippan brake bads i think the brakes they fitted are loose
@@imranali-wz2qf It seems to happen pretty often now.. I think some manufacturers are too relaxed in their tolerancing practices.
This can be a mixing up of left and right pads right?
I'm not so sure, I'm not certain there are cars with different left/right dimensions on the long side of the pad.
I and my friend bought the same set of brake pads (same car) I have this problem, he doesn't. So I don't think it's a pad problem in my case, I also changed to a new brand but it does the same thing
Maybe the bracket is out of spec?
@@GibbysGarage15 brackets put new
I had this same problem on my Benz installed new brake pads and when I brake the pads were moveing causeing a knock I took the pads out and took a hammer to the ends but u gota hit it on the rite spot it will expand the metal on the ears to make them a tighter fit I managed to hammer them perfect and got them to fit nice and tight but not so tight that the pads can’t slide the way they are suppose to I never had the clunk again u coulda used ur old pads u just need to know what ur doing theirs ways to fix this noise without geting the oem brake pads from experience mine was a Mercedes Benz c280 4 matic
That's a great idea! never thought of it
What brand of brake pads did u use that caused the clunking and which brand did u replace them with that got rid of the clunk I replaced mine with Bosh premium pads and they were to short they made the clunking sound did u get the oem pads from Audi that fixed ur problem or did u find another brand that had a tighter fit
@@shyne5637 I used Centric at first, made the noise. Then I replaced them with Power Stop and it fixed the issue. Both of these were semi-metallic compounds.
The brakes just started clunking on my brand new vehicle with just 6000 miles on them. What could cause this?
Does it clunk when you brake, and only again when you reverse and brake? Or every time you hit the brakes? In any event if its that new it should be under warranty.
My car began producing such noise 1 month post changing brake pads only on light braking
So it was a manufacturing defect? I’m having the same issue and the mechanic is saying it’s normal because breaks need room to move. And so paid for Lexus original breaks
Yes it is a manufacturing defect. I would get them to fix it. They are most likely trying to brush you off, but brakes shouldn't clunk when you use them.
@@GibbysGarage15 he says the only way to fix it is to jam and rust them lol. According to him all break jobs done properly had this sound. Can’t believe this dude. Could it be malfunctioning springs that apply vertical tension to pads?
Would this cause the steering wheel to shake as well?
That sounds like a wheel balance issue, or if the wheel shakes during braking, the front brakes need to be changed.
Hey brother I just did a brake job and I am get a clunk when going over bumps. Is this my issue?
That sounds like a suspension issue!
Check drop link
Having the same problems about a day after change. Had to get back and on the way back it was acting up while pressing the gas from a stop. You ever figure out the issue?
Can u please tell us the pads brand that u replace ( the new ones)
Will a car still pass an mot with this issue?
I am not sure
Having the same issue just changed brakes and rotors
It's annoying and not something we should deal with if quality control was better!
Did you feel that clicking noise in the steering wheel of your car?
It can transfer through the steering wheel yes.
@@GibbysGarage15 My Porsche Cayenne 957 has the same problem :(
@@orkhanasib Sorry to hear... is it OEM pads or aftermarket?
Same thing and sound on my INFINITI
Sorry to hear! How many miles on it?
Could it be cheap pads!?
Could be!
Can this be heard while just driving. I swear my sound almost like this but only in movements. I feel my pads are loose, causing it to clunk.
You might have another video while driivng, but with the noise?
Every situation is unique, you would have to narrow down the problem to see what it is. Hard for me to say without seeing the car in person!
If it’s making noise while driving it could be loose pads - but also loose caliper or suspension
Maybe cheap hardware?
That too!
U can ply those shims on the ears wider so they cushion the knock
Ply the brake pads? With what?
Just bought a fuc**ng gearbox for no reason at all. Guess what is was.
No Way! :o
Be honest can i just leave my brakes like this lol
If it doesn't bother you I don't see the harm.. it is transferring kinetic energy in the pad and crashing into the bracket with some force, which might dent it, but that is purely speculation.
@@GibbysGarage15 Okay thanks ill just keep an eye out
