    Having failed to get any of the coil packs and plug boots out, I can't tell how they're constructed... Several people have said that these are two-piece assemblies. Is it possible to separate the coils from the plug boots while the boots are still on the plugs? Would that allow me to get some lubricant on the boots to get them free? Is there a trick I can use to separate the coil packs from the boot?

    I never got my plugs out at 60,000 miles. I tried for hours and used several different types of tools to pull on those plug boots but couldn't get them free. I used an enormous amount of force. I finally reconnected to the coil packs and the ground wires. Fortunately it still runs, but I have to get the job done eventually, and now I'm not certain I can trust my mechanic. Just a few months before my attempt I had asked him to pull the plugs to see if I had any signs of a head gasket leak. 20 minutes later he told me that the plugs were fine. Did he lie to me about checking them? If he was able to get them out, wouldn't a good mechanic apply dielectric grease to prevent them from getting stuck?

    • @GibbysGarage15
      @GibbysGarage15 14 днів тому

      Don't get frustrated. If the car still runs, step away for a while to cool down and re-think it. Mechanics have all sorts of experience and they know things that us DIYers may not. A trick to make sure your mechanic isn't scamming you is to say "I'd like you to save my old parts and give them back to me." At least there is less likely a chance of foul play. But a trusted mechanic is important -- keep looking. It took me 15 shops to find a good one.

    I just went through this with my 15 Interceptor; I used the original clip pads and regreased them and they worked fine for about 1k miles, then one of the pads partially came out lol. It seems common sense but I didn't realize these pads could have a QC issue for tolerances. Anybody else have that happen? Where it initially fit fine but there was enough play that something was able to upset the pad and clip fitment?

At this point, I'm ready to put everything back together and let a mechanic deal with it. But wondering if all that pulling broke a wire connection to the plugs. Thanks for the video. I never thought brake pads could cause such clanking noises. I have a weird problem, although it's similar, I'm not sure if it's the axle shaft or the brakes. Could you help? I know that my axle shafts are going bad as they created a clicking/clanking noise when I turned the wheel at slow speeds. But that's an old story. A couple of weeks ago, I had both my front and back rotors resurfaced and the brake pads changed. My brother took the car to a hill station on his vacation after that. Now, when I turn the wheel, I can hear the clicking noise, but in addition to that known problem, I can hear the clicking noise when I brake, start the car from idle, or go over a bump. What could be the reason? Did the axle shaft really go bad after his hill drive, which usually involves a lot of turns, or is it the new brake pads? Like you mentioned, it's so hard to find mechanics who are true to their heart and have the patience and knowledge to look into the issues. Thank you.

    • @GibbysGarage15
      @GibbysGarage15 2 місяці тому

      Only way to approach this would be a process of elimination. I would take the wheel off and check for play in the brake pad like in the video. Sometimes when they clean things up really good, and use a new brake pad, it could create a gap between the pad and bracket. If that looks good, and there's no excessive play in the pad, I would go ahead and fix the axles since that needs to be done anyway. The usual approach, when trouble diagnosing, is to start where it's free/cheap first, and move up from there. I feel your pain, cars can be tricky to diagnose even for the seasoned technician. Good luck, I'd love to hear back!
