What about signs a driver should know? Is there a way a driver can determine if they need a caliber without having to remove the tire? Will it make a noise? Will it cause specific driving issues? Will it leave break residues? Great video for a mechanic, now how about us drivers with no mechanic skills.
I was looking at the rotors and noticed that my rear passenger rotor has more "buildup" compared to the others. While the others have a smoother surface area where the brake pads press, this one rotor has less of that smooth surface. It makes sense to me, then, that the pads are not pressing as much against that rotor, correct? Could this be a sign of either a worn brake pad or a seized piston in the caliper? Im asking because this could be somewhat related to what Angela was initially asking about.
Going through brakes quicker. If you can lift your car and turn the tire and if it’s hard to turn or doesn’t at all it could be a sign of a bad caliper as well.

These signs are all for the mechanic to know....Can a person tell a caliper piston is seizing by how the car brakes? My car currently "wobbles" when braking and the faster I'm going when I apply the brakes the more noticeable it is. The car moves left and right in cycle as I brake and its dangerous at high speed. I also had this one time seizing with a loud strong metallic grinding noise that dissappeared on its own. The car would barely even move and the noise was loud. Felt like the rims on the car were locked up. The dealer inspected but found nothing wrong with the brakes or wheels. I think it It all seems to be related to the passengers front wheel. I'm thinking, new pads and rotors but then I was thinking maybe the caliper is sticking?
Yea im going through exactly the same issue right now. I hear a grinding noise, and it sounds like something is loose (almost sounds like a little bell) and all the sudden it goes away. My guess is that water breached inside the caliper and caused it to corrode from the inside. I cleaned it and greased it and the noise continues to come back. My brake pedal does feel spongy

The guide pins are inside the caliper. One at top and one at bottom. The caliper bracket is what the guide pins screw into to hold the caliper in place. I have been doin my own brakes since the 90’s since no mechanic is gonna clean n lubricate everything the right way since it takes time. At least none around my area. The guide pins need to slide nice n free as do the brake pads need to slide freely in the caliper so they retract when u take your foot off the brake pedal. Pretty cheap to get a new set of pads, rotors n calipers if you’re DIY. If u change the caliper u must bleed the brakes and always use new unopened brake fluid since it absorbs water if stored. Good luck
What he means by seized up is not that u can’t unscrew them from the bracket. He means they’re seized up in the caliper itself. U can remove the guide pins and clean them and re lubricate them with silicone lubricant and put them back in. Even after they’re screwed into the bracket and you’re done with the brakes and about to put tire back on, the guide pins should still be lubricated enough so the caliper slides in them. Hope this helps
What I don’t understand is why people don’t replace brake hoses when replacing a caliper. I do it automatically, you already have to open the system and bleed the brakes, the hose isn’t much more why even bother just replace it.
I replaced my brakes and rotors 5 months ago. I noticed my calipers are starting to stick on my challenger. My rotors dont look worn at all. Do i need to replace my brakes and rotors again when i replace the caliper and the hose?
Ok but pads will never wear out perfectly even on both sides. The side where the piston pushes is in direct line with the pressure, while the other side is in counter mechanical reaction. My pads last about 4 years on my car, but after less than 1 year, the grease in the guide pins becomes stiff and prevents the caliper from aligning freely, wearing the piston-side pad faster. Why lubing the guide pins yearly and unfreezing the pads is good maintenance.
Hrmm this makes sense. I been wondering why my rear right caliper im having to replace my 2nd piston boot in 2-3 yrs along with uneven pad wear. Ill just replace the caliper to be safe

I have a issue with my 03 camry where when i brake going over very slight bumps on the road it sometimes just sinks the brake pedal and i basically dont have brakes for like 2 secs then the brakes come back. I replaced the rotor and pad on both front brakes twice, i replaced the drums and shoes in the rear and still it happens im guessing its a caliper problem cause the brackets are good and i think the brake lines too. I want a second opinion though before I order calipers and put em on
A warped/high spots on a rotor, is a possible indicator that the caliper is stuck, causing abnormal pressure/heat on the rotor. Don't just throw fresh rotors on without checking the calipers, because in a couple hundred miles of driving your rotors may warp again, and your customers say, wtf!🤣
My car is pulling to the left and right would that be a bad calipers? I recently just got a wheel alignment , brake pads and rotors so I know that’s not it.
See I replaced my breaks and rotors and found out that one break pad was at 10% and the other was 40% so they wore out unevenly. I just had the caliper replaced so I’m guessing I just need to break it in? Since I’m still breaking in my brakes and rotors? If not then what is still causing the sound???
Newbie here! I have a 2018 Jeep Grand Cherokee Limited 3.6L and ordered the wrong sized rotors (350mm) I need the 330mm but wanted to know, since I got the brake kit, would I need to switch the calipers as well? I matched the pads and they seem exact fit as my previous ones so that's no issue.
I have a Ford escape and my rotor is smelling and becomes hot and hard to rotate I’ve fix this part 3 times and it keeps happening is it my calipers? I need help because I’m about ready to throw the car away at this point.
Is regular black axle grease too thick to use on the guide pins, brake pad tabs? Everyone here is always saying use silicone lubricant (silicone grease) for these areas. What is so bad about just using axle grease, instead?
TIP -- Don't try to go cheap on your caliper grease!! I use Permatex Synthetic Brake Lubricant, $25 for 8oz. I have replaced every part of the front of my car except the lower arm controls and the cv axle. I even replaced the caliper again because we thought maybe the caliper was faulty, it's still making the same noise and no one knows what to do because everything is brand new and the parts were premium parts so they weren't cheap. You name it, we have tried it and replaced it, even fluids and entirely new suspension system. Nothing has worked and it is only my passenger side that does it and it only does it if I brake slowly as if coming to a stop at a stop sign. My car is less than 10 years old and I have done everything I can to keep up with its maintenance so it is definitely taken care of, we just cannot figure out what is causing the noise. I would never replace brake pads without replacing the calipers. They don't cost that much, and if a caliper locks up, you are stuck wherever that happens. A tow bill will cost you many times more than the price of new calipers, and if one locks up out in the boondocks, you could be in a very BAD situation. Especially if you are a woman, a long way from home. Cheap insurance!

Is it bad for there to be a little bit of wiggle from the brake pad after installing and driving a while. It’s not like there falling off but there is definitely some play in the pads
I just replace my front drivers side caliper, the piston was only staying out, causing my car to shake on the freeway! If you cannot push the pistons in with a C clamp, this is also a sign!
Bad information, I often saw calipers were in good condition but bottom slider pin seized which caused an uneven wear on brake pads. Honing inside hole with wire brush & a new kit of slider pins ( $20./per set comes with rubbers) Also replacing brake pads . I think it's nonesensicle to replace good calipers if the issue is only the slider pins unless you have an extra $250-$300+ for new calipers because a Mechanic will strongly suggest you replace both calipers !!

Put silicone grease and no problems for long
Hrmm this makes sense. I been wondering why my rear right caliper im having to replace my 2nd piston boot in 2-3 yrs along with uneven pad wear. Ill just replace the caliper to be safe
Lmao its was raining and I went to stop but k was stopping kinda hard because the light was in a corner turn on a 45mph road, but as I was breaking i heard something and my breaks went a bit weak for a second
professional, to the point - without any blah blah blah
I have a issue with my 03 camry where when i brake going over very slight bumps on the road it sometimes just sinks the brake pedal and i basically dont have brakes for like 2 secs then the brakes come back. I replaced the rotor and pad on both front brakes twice, i replaced the drums and shoes in the rear and still it happens im guessing its a caliper problem cause the brackets are good and i think the brake lines too. I want a second opinion though before I order calipers and put em on
master cylinder
A warped/high spots on a rotor, is a possible indicator that the caliper is stuck, causing abnormal pressure/heat on the rotor. Don't just throw fresh rotors on without checking the calipers, because in a couple hundred miles of driving your rotors may warp again, and your customers say, wtf!🤣
Good tip.
You can replace guide pins tho 😅 if the pin boots are good not cracked
My car is pulling to the left and right would that be a bad calipers? I recently just got a wheel alignment , brake pads and rotors so I know that’s not it.
Is it possible to upgrade from a factory 2-piston brake caliper to a 4-piston caliper without making any other changes?
If it fits onto your vehicle no, such as with aftermarket big brake kits, if you do that tho I would recommend stronger brake hoses
when my car is in the air i spin the left tire it spins and when i spin the right tire it doesn't spin so i have to change the caliper
Bro science. Love it
What if you take off the caliper and notice basically black slime all over the place coming from the hose?
That's your brake fluid
@@Lil513mama And it shouldn't be black. I'd recommend a brake flush (replace the brake fluid with new) and likely new calipers.
@@jeffstock7819 yes I completely agree 💯
How would it sound
It would sound like a grinding sound you need to replaced your caliper
See I replaced my breaks and rotors and found out that one break pad was at 10% and the other was 40% so they wore out unevenly. Two weeks later I started hearing a grinding/rubbing when I breakers and so I had the caliper done but I’m still hearing a slight grinding/rubbing as before just not as much. I just had the caliper replaced so I’m guessing I just need to break it in? Since I’m still breaking in my brakes and rotors? If not then what is still causing the sound???
Thank u
Newbie here! I have a 2018 Jeep Grand Cherokee Limited 3.6L and ordered the wrong sized rotors (350mm) I need the 330mm but wanted to know, since I got the brake kit, would I need to switch the calipers as well? I matched the pads and they seem exact fit as my previous ones so that's no issue.
Calipers are probably the same.
Ok mine are fine but i get a squeak when backing up and hitting the peddel in the morning. Thats it any clue ?
I have a Ford escape and my rotor is smelling and becomes hot and hard to rotate I’ve fix this part 3 times and it keeps happening is it my calipers? I need help because I’m about ready to throw the car away at this point.
What about at high speeds my Honda Odyssey shakes bad when breaking ?
Why do some machi Mechanics not like copper washers and if they are an issue, what washers work best to reinstall the break line on a new Caliper?
Is regular black axle grease too thick to use on the guide pins, brake pad tabs? Everyone here is always saying use silicone lubricant (silicone grease) for these areas. What is so bad about just using axle grease, instead?
@@enduringpursuit Thanks, good explanation!
I was stuck in traffic, with my foot on the brake. After releasing it, my car stalled but quickly returned to its normal state. What could cause this?
My brakes and rotors rubbing bit I had recently replaced both and it’s rubbing again
TIP -- Don't try to go cheap on your caliper grease!! I use Permatex Synthetic Brake Lubricant, $25 for 8oz. My Ranger went a year between brake inspections, had the good grease on the slide pins and the hardware, still slide the caliper back n forth by hand!
Have used cheap grease before, brakes failed, the grease looked like dog turds and nothing was lubricated!!
What about a caliper bolt that keeps backing out while driving
LocTite.
I'm currently experiencing this problem with both my front brakes
Might be the hoses then.
@@Vin3Man 😂 wow swift diag
I have a 2005 Chevy Express 3500 Passenger Van. Just replaced both rear calipers, rotors, pads and flex hoses. Right sides seems to be working perfectly! Left side is stuck on, can the guide pins be too tight from the factory? These are NAPA calipers like the one shown in the video. Any other suggestions? Thanks!
maybe the hand brake cable is the problem then
Thanks for sharing
For the past two years I had to replace the brakes and rotors 3 time and every time my breaks are changed they always make a scraping sound as I brake never goes away and I have to replace them over and over again I can't figure out why can you help me find the answer? I have a 2012 Volkswagen golf
Stuck brake calipers?
So it's better to spend way more money on a caliper than a dust boot or slide pin. Thanks NAPA!
Thank you 👍🏼
Great job 👍👏👏
Great tips !!! Thanks.
Napa tells us to replace our whole brake caliper when you have a rusty pin. Are you sure couldnt you just clean the old one off. This comment is for entertainment purposes only. Do not take this as professional advice. I am an ideot when talking about cars, Also this guys hands look lilly soft
I was thinking something 💯👍🏼✅
What does this cost? I'm pretty sure I have to replace mine
This video is misleading to buy a whole new caliper when you can rebuild the damaged seal and piston don't be afraid give it a go
I tried but fail in 2 weeks so still had to get new one .. but still got me 2 week extra … and I need to very min to hold 😂so yeap😂

I'm not even close to an expert, but did you do the job yourself? Did you push the piston in with a clamp?
@@morehn I did not do the job myself but I can ask the person if they pushed the piston in with a clamp. I kept hearing the horrible grinding noise, took it to several mechanics, no one knows what's causing the noise. It sounds like grinding, dragging, growling noise and you can feel it too. It is coming from the passenger side but you can feel the vibrations/griding make its way to the driver's side. Please, if you know ANYTHING please contact me back. It is a 2011 Nissan versa 4 cylinder, 1.8L hatchback if that helps.
@@MC-sh6jf did you try turning it off and turning it on again?
I'm a super amateur with cars, so I'm far from knowing. I wish I would have an idea for you but it's way out of my league.
@@morehn Turning what on and off again?
@@MC-sh6jf i'm just kidding about that. Truthfully I have no idea. Try posting the question on a car forum and maybe someone will be able to help.
My brakes been wearing every 15k rotors too. 2nd time in a row
excellent, clear helpful video with great tips ! Thanks !
Considering the price for a caliper (especially digital that can change between inches and metric at the press of a button) avoid buying old and used. Reminds of the guy that said his hammer had been in the family for generations. Head only replaced twice and the shaft only four times.

What about stuck piston
Super‼️
👍😉😀
My caliper smoking after ride on the bridge and rubbing together
when i first drive my car for the day my brakes are fine..then after a about 20 miles it feels like i am riding my brakes as my car will actually slow down..After the brakes cool it works fine again..i suspect bad calipers but not sure
All about the appearance of the caliper and nothing about the symptoms or problems a bad one can create.
Good job sir ;)
I would never replace brake pads without replacing the calipers. They don't cost that much, and if a caliper locks up, you are stuck wherever that happens. A tow bill will cost you many times more than the price of new calipers, and if one locks up out in the boondocks, you could be in a very BAD situation. Especially if you are a woman, a long way from home. Cheap insurance!
Nice talks about everything but the topic
Skip the 1st 25 useless seconds. Good video. Great info. But I didn't appreciate the extra large portion of commercials for such a short video so I had to give it a 👎. Two external commercials followed by a THIRD embedded commercial.
Your car will also make noice when you drive

Napa is the highest part store
That's why I don't go there!.

Why do people butcher the English language like this?
Its either needs TO BE replaced
Or needs replacING
Is this for Kia’s souls ???
Consternation 😂
Doesn’t help at all. No tips to REMOVE calipers with rusted guide pins. This is more of a prevention video not a how to fix video.
Or you smell it and smoking from wheel
...needs to be replaced.
Does continuous hot spots regardless of brand new rotors and slide pin lube mean the caliper is bad?
You're not breaking properly bro. Take it easy especially on new hardware. Killin me smalls 😂
Never listen to dealers or mechanics they will rip you off
Is it bad for there to be a little bit of wiggle from the brake pad after installing and driving a while. It’s not like there falling off but there is definitely some play in the pads
You have a problem
That’s 3 not 4 the hose is not a part of the caliber itself.
napa way over price and there battery do not last more then 2 years do not buy battery from napa
Lies my battery has been in since 07
