What. A. Hero. My Santa Fe has had rattling front pads for years. I usually use lots of copper grease but that washes off after a short while. Took the pads off today, bent those tabs in a bit and put everything back together. No rattles. No clonks. No more getting annoyed over rough roads. Thank you very much, from the UK.

Thank you very much for the video. My mechanic replaced something unnecessarily. After watching and checking the car, I saw that was my problem. He replaced the stabilizer bar bushings for no reason at all.
Can this noise happen when driving low speed over speed bumps on a straight road?? No mechanic can solve the issue for me it’s the same noise but now when braking
@@BranBran241 check your caliper bracket bolts. Should have two if one is broken or loose it will have that noise. Especially in reverse or going over a bump in the road
I think it's the shims and the lack of grease on the back of the pad. They have a special grease that is included for the back of the pads. If you don't use it (or your installer kept it for himself/herself) then it makes this clunking sound. Also, that grease can dry up and then you get a clunking, too.
I've been chasing this problem on my Toyota Tacoma for over a year. Checked tie rods, sway bar, struts, anything that moves, but no cigar. Finally, this past weekend, I put new brakes on the thing. Did a good cleaning on all moving parts, replaced pads, and those freakin' shims. No more click. I owe you a beer!
I took my wheel off recently, cleaned the shims which i reused because the new ones kept touching and were annoying and i noticed it stopped then came back, i hadnt adjusted anything. Worth a check again and following your tips, thank you from Alberta
Yup! 2023 pathfinder has the same noise from driver side. I took a video then took it to multiple dealers and they couldn’t figure it out. They said nothing wrong with it and they could not replicate the noise. I am glad that the noise not in my head and someone else figured it out. Thanks!
Are you sure this is what is causing it? I have a 2023 Pathfinder too and it makes this noise: ua-cam.com/users/shorts5DfVCDicacA?si=HM6ylK44G1Ze3pgb It isn't the brake pads. Dealership can't figure it out. I am preparing the Lemon Law paperwork.
@@gary_neilson1896 What solved the issue for me is that I took it to a different dealership and they adjusted the brake pads. Not sure what does that mean but the first dealership was not able to figure it out even after two days of leaving the car there. Hope this helps. Cheers!
Thank you! Noise was driving me crazy! I just couldn't find it, and here I thought it was a suspension issue. Back Anti vibration clips were missing on both sides . Replaced with new pads and hardware.... no more noise! [2013 lincoln MKX ]
Like many here I've been fixing all kinds trying to get to the cause of this very frustrating clicking/tapping. It exactly matches the sound I'm hearing as I drive and it stops when I apply the brakes. Sometimes I can go for hours and then it starts. Sometime only very subtle and other times very loud but very intimitant. I'll try this as I think you could well be on to something.
Not a question, but a statement for anyone in a similar situation: I have a 2013 BMW and I just got my rotors turned because my rear brake pads had gone out and my wear sensor had been severed a while ago (without my knowledge). So one of the pads was ruining one of the rotors and I decided to take care of all of them to make sure they were fine. When I was putting my brakes back on it's possible I messed up the clips holding my brakes in place and they're just slightly bent. I was mostly worried about this being a problem for braking but I'm glad it's not too serious and that I can DIY fix this.
On most rav 4's of this era, there are supposed to be additional spring clips that attatch to the top and bottom of each pad to prevent the movement. If your new pads dont have them when doing your brakes, you may have to transfer the old clips to the new pads
I replaced the caliper pad retaining springs which fixed the clicking on my calipers, different to yours by looks of it. The springs go weak over time which causes the outboard pad to move back and forth making the annoying clicking sound.
Pulled the brakes off, cleaned and reinstalled plus tweaked the shim. No more popping. Thanks only have to do one side. Going to inspect and reinstall and if pads slide going to adjust the shim where they sit. Makes sense. Will consider buying OEM brakes but now I know to always check for pad movement when installing.😊
My noise started shortly after new pads fitted I think cheap after market pads are the cause , these are strange pads oem pads dust was black these new pads is almost pinky purple .great video perfect explanation.
@@carquestions do you think apart from the cluck sound they won’t cause any safety issues though the noise is worse in reverse . All the best from 🇬🇧 Uk
This noise won't affect brake function other than it makes a small noise - it shouldn't be a loud noise - have the brakes checked again - let me know what happens - Cheers from Canada!
I work on Toyota's and most of the brake pads on them come with a little metal clip that goes on the "ears" of the pads that work as a spring and a squealer. It basically pre-loads the pads so they don't move and cause that click, don't know if other manufactures have that but yeah a lot of the time people forget to put them on or lose them by accident during a brake job because they like to fly when you remove them lol
Thank you so much for this video may give me another clue to solve my rear clicking/clunking noise. I've changed the sway bar bushings, links and rear shock absorbs but the noise still annoying me.... thank you again.
Thank you from a fellow Canadian... This has been driving me nuts. I noticed the Bosch brake pads I installed on my rear discs were looser than they should be (maybe a millimeter of play), despite being correct specs on paper. Every time I fully stop (unless I stop really really gently) I get a clunk. Will give this a try!
Great info, thanks! Just got new pads and rotors, a few days later and I’ve got an intermittent click. I already let the mgr of the shop know, he said they’ll look at them when they put on a new tire. Supposedly the pads exceed OEM. Like you said, anything can happen.
They didn't click when new - and all things being equal shouldn't click upon replacement - also being an OEM part is not the same as "meeting OEM specs"
Thanks for this video. I have a 2007 Tacoma and it's making the exact same noise and found that the outer pads/shims didin't have grease between the breake shim and the brake pads. After applying a lot of the grease between the two, the noise is gone. I think the grease act as an adhesive and the previous mechanic didn't use any.
When I removed the existing shims, I noticed there were no grease on them, thus they were sliding just a tiny bit causing that sound. This time, I made sure I applied extra plenty of grease on all shims, and the sound is gone. It felt so good to get rid of that annoying sound. Cheers!!
A true backyard mechanic, there must be a dozen or more ways to fix this much better, weld a little to the end of the pad and file it down as needed, add more shim as this is why shims were invented, epoxy behind the existing shim to take up some space, etc.
Thank you for this video. I just started to have this issue crossing into Detroit from Windsor. I thought I over heated my brakes during the long drag down the ambassador bridge. I checked all my tie rods, springs, suspension parts. I checked all the bolts on the caliper itself and slide pins...I guess this is likely the culprit. I'll have to give your trick a try because the Toyota clips are some what spring loaded and I imagine the salt and thaw recently is making this issue more pronounced
I recently replaced both front calipers and pads and I get a “clunk” type of sound when I put my foot on the pedal when coming to a stop. I hear the sound more when I release the pedal. ! I don’t hear the sound when pumping the pedal when the car is not moving. Hmmm. I’m gonna check this out. Thanks for posting.
The only thing that seems odd is that there seems to be a lot of play back and forth in the caliper, I can move the caliper slightly by pushing on it. The passenger side doesn’t have this play. I’m thinking that somehow the driver side caliper is out of spec. I haven’t replaced it yet, getting used to it I guess but it is annoying.
I bent the locking tabs on the break pads out slightly and it worked. Must have bent them a little trying to install causing them to become loose as the pad wore down. THANKS!
Thank you very much!!! This "click" sound has been bugging me for weeks and can't find the root cause! I just checked it's very little play of one of pad. Unfortunately my toyota shim is not that easy to bent to fix it, I guess as far as it does not drop the breaking performance, I let it go. Subscribed!
This just started for me today I think or I just noticed it today haha cuz I had the radio off so I was able to hear it for the first time today .. subbed for this
Must be nice to have old break technology with bendable shims ... these new calipers / pads have play like you wouldnt believe due to un calculated tight tolerance
Hey Man, You are awesome, I had a same issue on my Camry 2015. Brake calipper pin is the issue applied the grease and tightened the sound gone away 😂. Thank you.
This could also happen with some crappy aftermarket pads if you file the ears a bit to much off the brake pads ,to make them fit ,if to tight when installing better , if you do this they will be loose as well
Thanks for the helpful video. My car is still newish (2020 Toyota with 24K KMs) and I recently started hearing the exact same noise as in the video, except I hear the click every time the wheels turn and slow down only during braking like a fast clock (click-click-click-click). Could that be the same issue and the pads/shims need adjusting due to rust?
It could be that or some other suspension component link like a away bar link or track bar, control arm, parking brake etc - you need to get under that car and start moving them around with a big bar to figure it out Commander - let me know what you find - Cheers from Canada!
@@carquestions Thanks buddy! I will give those parts a look. If not, I'll let my second mechanic diagnose the issue. One local mechanic already said it was warped/rusted rotors but I find that hard to believe as they looks pretty clean. Greetings from Ontario, Canadian brother!!

Hello. So my car makes that noise while driving at low speeds without touching by my brakes. Brakes work fine but I can feel the noise when im pressing the gas pedal as well.
@carquestions Thanks! I took it to a mechanic yesterday. I wqs aure they'd say it was the shims, however, the discovered that bolts for the stuts (recently) put on were loose!! The tightened them with alleviated the peoblem...or ao I thought. I don't hear theclicking noise as much but there is still a light clicking noice when I appl the brakes SOMETIMES. This is really frustrating!
Im going to try this. I changed the control arms and had to take one brakes side off and when i put it all back i started hearing this sound when i would first push the gas when driving.
2017 Honda civic with new brake pads. When reversing and hit the brake it makes a click loud noise from the rear left tire. I applied some grease and it help for a day or two and now the sound came back
I got same noise but when i accelerate my car after break, it disappears when I'm driving on high speed. My car is approx 33k kms driven. I can't figure it out the noise but it came from right front wheel, and for clarification we have ride side driven vehicles. Hoping for your answer. Cheers.
Halving the same issue. Just got my control arms fix day later I started hearing the clicking/pop noise. Goes away at high speed but when I brake or accelerate I hear it
I have an issue nobody seems to address. I replaced my rear pads and rotors one year ago on my 05 Town Car. I started hearing a squeal at less than 8k miles and thought maybe they needed more grease. What I found was the left pads were like new as expected. The right pads however were worn past the wear indicators. Very even wear and no tapering. The piston and guide pins on both sides move freely. What would make the right pads wear out so quickly?
Would that also possibly cause a click when hitting a small bump at low speeds, it seems like it might. The noise sounds a little bit different than the one I get when I brake. My truck has original pads after 6 years, time and wear causing the looseness too? I am looking forward to seeing if it's this issue. Thanks.
BB - it certainly could be but it could be a number of other things as well - ball joints, strut mounts, caliper lose etc. - need a close inspection of the front end - Cheers from Canada!
@@carquestionsthis will tighten the brakes pads, and it will not be sliding on the shims, so that will be a problem for the rotors and brakes, i think if its not sliding back and forth, easily?

Hi, I have a 2014 mustang gt. I been having several issues for the mast 4 months. For starters, I had gone like 3 new rotors and pads and don’t seem to stop the squealing and now every time I break I hear a big click noise by the passenger wheel. Took it to a ford shop and they can’t find the issue. They said suspension is fine and control arms are fine. Any idea what it can be? Thanks in advance.
Jose - this may sound wrong to you but you're a victim of stupid mechanics even though its a Ford dealer who should know their cars better than anyone - they often don't. There are a million reasons like they caused the problem and don't want you to find out - best advice - take it to a local garage this noise should be fairly easy to find - let me know what they say - cheers from Canada!
Thank god from this video I found out I am not the only one facing this issue with my brakes. One of my brake pads is clunking and it is loose so I put something solid beneath it. The clunking stopped for a month and again it’s back when car makes a stop. I am so frustrated. So my question is can replacing those shims on a 7 year old Corolla be any help or should I try to use your method. Thanks from Brampton Canada
Thx. Next time I could let you borrow some pliers for those mounts & shims😁also, sometimes there's a problem when both sides of caliper aren't engaged as likely aware some attention to cylinder along with guide pins & bushing getting clean & lube. There are some quieting methods using a cmpd that is different consistency & properties than greases which seems to dampen noise when correctly applied, that's idea but haven't used when shims adjusted should work.
I just had the front brakes replaced and having this clicking issue. I have an appointment at the mechanic 2 days from now but really needed the car until then. Is it dangerous for me to drive like this until the mechanic appointment.
Not sure this is also an issue, but I purchased new front rotors for my 2003 Lexus ES300. After I installed them, I could hear a click whenever I applied my brakes. Initially, I thought the pads were moving. However, I placed my phone under the car (up on jack stands) and recorded the wheel. It turned out that the stud holes in the rotors were significantly larger than the studs. When the brakes are applied the rotors would stop first and the studs would then click against the rotor stud holes. No amount of lug tightening would get rid of it. Holes were just too big. Parts supplier said rotors are OEM, which I do not believe. Tolerances are not there.
You have a nut torque issue for sure - Mark the hat of the rotor to the rim - if you're right the alignment marks will shift when braking - if not then you have another issue - no way that rim shouldn't clamp the rotor tight - let me know what you find - Cheers from Canada Scott!
I’m having this same clicking noise issue with my Lexus IS right now. I took the wheel off and the first thing I seen was the wheel studs were not at all centered onto the studs, I took the caliper off and recentered the rotor in the studs, put the caliper and wheel back on and torqued it to spec… still clicks. However, I didn’t check the other side… It is strange that the holes on the rotors don’t center onto the wheel studs .
working on a 2013 740Li and hear clicking when slowing down changed brakes rotors and driver side wheel bearing and still hear clicking hope this helps me because I bought aftermarket break pads so that might be the problem thanks for the video

Well the brakes will still work perfectly so if you don't mind the moise forget it - Also your click could be due to other suspension problems not brake related - let me know what you find - Cheers from Canada!

Now, as far as mechanics have told me, Yaris has no rear wheel anti rattle clips/shams (or not like the ones on the video. they are more like a wire, which I have). The pad moves left and right a bit and it's causing some noise. What can I do to stop it?
I had the same problem with my 2018 Jeep Grand Cherokee. I removed the calipers and applied AGS Brake lubricant on both edges of my front brake pads. I have no noise after doing so. It's intermittent (around 50-60% of the time) and ONLY happens at low braking speed approx 5-10 MPH max. I worry about the brake cable snapping? The brakes do have a light grind under the foot pedal too, and this can be heard inside the car, so that's both a sound and a feel. Power steering feels not really there and car is heavy to manoeuvre . Could this be linked please?

Why would you be worried sick over a noise in a car. If you bought not long ago take it back to the dealer. Further more it’s the braking system if it’s a caliper you can buy used for a newer model car brake pads are cheap have your husband check out the car. It’s most likely a loose brake pad. New ones aren’t that expensive and take 10 minutes to install.

Let me know how you make out JWS - Cheers from Canada!
Thanks for the info SG - Cheers from Canada!
On most rav 4's of this era, there are supposed to be additional spring clips that attatch to the top and bottom of each pad to prevent the movement. If your new pads dont have them when doing your brakes, you may have to transfer the old clips to the new pads
Very good advice indeed Haydon - Cheers - the car in the video was an EX35
I replaced the caliper pad retaining springs which fixed the clicking on my calipers, different to yours by looks of it. The springs go weak over time which causes the outboard pad to move back and forth making the annoying clicking sound.
Pulled the brakes off, cleaned and reinstalled plus tweaked the shim. No more popping. Thanks only have to do one side. Going to inspect and reinstall and if pads slide going to adjust the shim where they sit. Makes sense. Will consider buying OEM brakes but now I know to always check for pad movement when installing.😊

Did you find out what it was?
Same situation
I work on Toyota's and most of the brake pads on them come with a little metal clip that goes on the "ears" of the pads that work as a spring and a squealer. It basically pre-loads the pads so they don't move and cause that click, don't know if other manufactures have that but yeah a lot of the time people forget to put them on or lose them by accident during a brake job because they like to fly when you remove them lol

@@carquestions yeah, I’m normally an OEM-only guy. Mighta gotten burned this time. Will pursue.
I'd get the OE shims for sure - Cheers from Canada Sage!
OEM definitely. Thanks
When I removed the existing shims, I noticed there were no grease on them, thus they were sliding just a tiny bit causing that sound. This time, I made sure I applied extra plenty of grease on all shims, and the sound is gone. It felt so good to get rid of that annoying sound. Cheers!!
Good to hear@@Sagemeister007

What did you find? - Cheers!

My car is still newish (2020 Toyota with 24K KMs) and I recently started hearing the exact same noise as in the video, except I hear the click every time the wheels turn and slow down only during braking like a fast clock (click-click-click-click).
Did you replace the pad yourself. Sounds like the old one may have been put back in lol
It was a frozen piston. New caliper solved the problem.
I learned this by accident when I needed to replace my super worn brakes. All those noises went away

That doesn't make much sense. The rotors are clamped tight by the lut nuts when the wheels are installed.
However, I didn’t check the other side…
It is strange that the holes on the rotors don’t center onto the wheel studs .

I read somewhere that this sound is normal when the car has been exposed to cold Temps...
Pls what do you think?
For more details, I drive a 2017 Nissan Sentra SR Turbo
Pete - sounds like the same issue and yes temp can be a factor - find a smart mechanic - they"ll find the problem - Cheers from Canada.
@@carquestions Thanks...!!
Haha....Cheers from Canada to you as well!!
An easier way is to kick the tires just like they used to do in the old days.
that will make a caliper rattle maybe not a brake pad
Does it work with the abs breaks?
ABS doesn't matter - still has brake pads and they are the problem - Cheers!

I'm worried sick. My car (not long bought) only makes the 'clunk' under the brake foot pedal, so it's a 'feel' and not a noise.
It's very noticeable, and gone from one clunk to two now.
Mq - Not likely but it is possible since they are linked - I'd take it into a local shop ASAP - let me know what they find - Cheers and good luck from Canada!
Same issue on my 2012 Acura tl. Only one clunk almost everytime when I start moving or backing my car from parking lot. (Sounds like someone break off a piece of metal or tap on a metal). When I push or release a little bit on my brake pedal, it happens, but all my brake pads are newly changed 1.5 years ago. Actually I'm worried sick as well :( Do you get it fixed or find out what the problem is?
Im getting a crunchy piping noise when I brake. When I’m in stop and go traffic. I took too 3 mechanics and they can’t find anything. I changed the pads, rotors and front lower ball joint. Still getting the noise. I don’t even want to drive my car cause it sounds like something about to break. Help!!!!
After two months I finally found mines was so annoying
Way to go Curtis - Cheers from Canada!
This is happening to me right now but only on 1 side with my Hawk pads with Ferro Carbon material. I’m gonna try this tomorrow to see if it fixes the issue.
Good luck - let me know if it works - Cheers from Canada!
@@carquestions cheers! I’m actually gonna be in toronto in about 1 month for layover. Do you know of Devon Larratt from Canada
@@trapabar19 Nope I don't think so - taught a Devon once - don't recall his last name though - have fun while here.
