      Speaking of books, the last two Harry Potter movies was only going to be 1 movie, but since it was over 3 hours longlong they divided them into two movies. Do you guys think that's more excusable or it could"be done something else?

    100% agree with you on the Dark Knight Rises. Although I still love it, it has flaws which I overlooked after first seeing it. After I saw it I said it was better than the Dark Knight, three years later (Although still great) it doesn't come close to its predecessors.
    Fanboys are the worst. Your favourite movie has flaws. Accept them and move on!

    • @LockeWick
      @LockeWick 8 років тому +6

      +Will James I actually think Fanboy-ing also works the other way around with them liking so much that they won't/cannot enjoy any adaption of it. Because something has flaws in it, they automatically hate on it even if it is actually a pretty good adaption.
      Anime fans come to mind for that example.

    • @w-james9277
      @w-james9277 8 років тому

      Thomas Jiang No, the DK wasn't 100% perfect but its a fantastic movie. Nearly flawless and the Joker was terrifying. One reviewer was comparing it to other movies. He said what makes TDK good was its ability to build up tension. It made the hero always one step behind. The joker was killing people everywhere and the hero was almost powerless to stop him.

    • @windowsVD
      @windowsVD 8 років тому +5

      Leopard95 Of course, I love TDK as well, it's one of my all time favorites. That being said, my opinion of TDK is more or less the same as Chris's opinion of TDKR, and that extends to pretty much all 3 films in the trilogy. All of them have plot holes, but are all emotionally impactful, well directed, and show a strong understanding of its characters. Even then, much of TDKR's so called plot holes are either explainable or are consistent within the rules of the first 2 films. My point is, it bothers me that TDKR gets so selectively nitpicked for its plot holes yet the ones in BB and TDK are almost constantly ignored. In BB, almost the entirety of Ra's plan relies on a major chemical impossibility in order to pull off. In TDK, much of Joker's plan relies on pure coincidence and convenience and just Gotham's security staff being a much of morons, to the point where it almost feels like Joker somehow broke the fourth wall and acquired a copy of the script, allowing him to know and predict everything ahead of time. I love all movies, especially TDK, but even that film has its fair share of plot holes.

      Exactly this. I dislike the DCEU so far but to pretend the MCU is so much better is silly to me. I think the A.D.D. style editing and "fun" one liners every 2 minutes blind people to the fact that MCU just rushes out really bad action movies that do little with their source material. I've yet to see a MCU movie directed properly and I've yet to see a DCEU movie with proper narrative.

    You're view on The Dark Knight Rises with the plot hole scenario is the same as mine with Interstellar. Interstellar is one of my favourite movies of all time, but the performances alone, along with the story, soundtrack, visual and practical effects makes the movie for me and makes me not really regard the plot holes. I'm glad someone else feels this way about a different movie, so thank you for that.
    However, I disagree with The Amazing Spider-Man. I thought that it was a fantastic movie with a great performance from both Andrew Garfield and Emma Stone. A lot of people may not agree with me saying this, but I think it's both a great movie and comic book movie. I know you're both probably rolling your eyes but it's honestly true. It's also a personal preference thing too.
    But I'm right with you with The Amazing Spider-Man 2. That's the movie I "Phantom-Menaced" with. I absolutely loved it when it came out, about a year later I really hated it.

    I enjoy Amazing Spider-man 1-2 but I see the flaws big time. It's easy to see but still very enjoyable. I actually have more "FUN" watching them than Spider-man 1-3. Now I know Spider-man 2 is better but Amazing just more "fun" to watch if that makes sense.
    Either way enjoyable comic book movies with very noticeable flaws.

      +UltimateChance I completely agree UltimateChance. One great thing in AS2 - Peter/Gwen dynamic is the first time in Spider-Man films where we actually see a relationship that is believable, Andrew Garfield and Emma Stone's chemistry is great. Remember how annoying Tobey/Kristen relationship was throughout the Sam Raimi trilogy? Plus Doug Walker from TGWTG said something good about Peter in the new films. We actually see him grow as a man in the films as he learns. Every Raimi film Tobey was either quitting the job as Spider-Man or acting like a child, he never grew to be cocky like the character does. Garfield's Spider-Man does this with flying colors. Each series has their pros and cons, but Amazing Spider-Man 2 is extremely underrated IMO.

    My biggest problem with fanboying today isn't so much people defending bad movies because they like them or are big fans of the characters or franchise. It's ok to love bad movies. I'm a huge Ninja Turtles fan and I really enjoy the 2014 movie. But I know it's a ridiculously bad movie no matter how you look at it. It's a guilty pleasure. No, my biggest problem is that nowadays you have to justify why you like or don't like a movie. People actually expect you to convince them or at least explain yourself why you have a certain opinion about a movie as if that explanation suddenly is going to make a huge difference and make your opinion more valuable. It doesn't. Movies are personal and each movie hits different marks for different people. And if you enjoy a bad movie, or hate a good movie, because it connected, or didn't connect, with you, than that's ok and no one should question your taste and opinion because that is a personal thing.

      You do need a reason for every opinion you have. You can't just like or dislike or love or hate anything without a reason. Now, having said that, that doesn't mean your answer has to "satisfy" the questioning party. Your answer could be," I love the Ninja Turtles and will pretty much watch anything with them because the Turtles are awesome!" That's a reason. Who cares if the person asking says some bullshit about that not being good enough. So, yeah, everything has to have a reason.

    • @jarosbodytko6462
      @jarosbodytko6462 7 років тому +8

      A reason, sure. But people expecting you to explain those reasons as if any of that justifies liking or not liking something is what bothers me nowadays.

      I agree, sometimes i feel Chris wants people to agree with him. For example, he has made clear to his viewers that they can enjoy Rogue One and The Amazing Spider Man as long as they acknowledge the issues they have. or he does feel baffled when notices people enjoying a bad movie (The Phantom Menace, X-Men Origins: Wolvering, Batman and Robin) I mean sorry but he doesn't have the right to tell people how they should watch a movie. Enjoying a movie is not a matter of FACTS, it's a matter of OPINION and SUBJECTIVITY. As for me, i enjoyed Rogue One. Why? Because i genuinely did. No need to be questioned.

    Videos like this is why Chris is my favourite movie critic, a brilliant discussion with lots of amazing analysis. The fact that Chris not only reviews individual movies but also discuses them from a macro level, taking into account genre, fans, etc is top notch. Chris and Mark Kermode for me are the best in the business because 99% of critics will just talk about individual movies and criticise/praise them and move on. Chris and Mark do that but also go deeper (Mark less so because he's clearly more of a writer than UA-camr but he still does it) in videos like this, you can tell they have a connection with movies that goes beyond simple entertainment, as much as I love other critics like Jeremy Jahns and Flickstarr, I appreciate videos made like this a million times more. keep up the amazing work Chris, best movie reviewer out there.

    Hi Chris you should do the exactly same thing to The Force Awakens, i'll assure you that it has the same WTF plot holes and dumb moments that for example Jurassic World, not to mention that is a rip off of the original movie. That is what I don't like about fan boys, that they become hypocritial because they forgive things in their favourite franchises that in other movies they would never forgive.
    Admit it Chris, you are a fan boy of Star Wars and that's why you think is the best movie of the year.

    • @marcozuleta133

      +Patrick Hopkins I don't hate it and I don't hate people who loved it. I'm just saying that no matter how I like a movie, I will always be objective and I will always give it the place it deserves.
      and putting the force awakens as 2015s number 1 movie, is clearly a fanboy opinion.
      that's like saying that TFA deserves the oscar for best picture of the year....and that's just BS.

    • @marcozuleta133
      @marcozuleta133 8 років тому +3

      +Patrick Hopkins you are entitled to love TFA, but if a "movie expert" like Chris Stuckmann puts it on number 1 over movies like Inside Out, Mad Max, Sicario, The Room, The Hateful 8, The Danish Girl, The Revenant, etc... well that to me says that he thinks and reate movies more based on his heart, than the quality of the movie itself. And that's why I can not take him serious anymore; I enjoy his videos, but sadly I don't trust his opinion/taste anymore.

    I usually respect your opinion Chris, and while I agree with the sentiment of "turn on your brains", I don't agree with the way you guys discussed this at all and I think it's kind of a toxic perspective to have. The idea that there is some kind of objective truth and that people who like "bad" films like TASM2 or Terminator Genysis are only doing it because they love the brand and are blind to flaws is frankly closed-minded. There's no objective "good" or "bad". Like what you like because you like it, not because someone tells you to. Who even cares if they like it out of brand loyalty! Nobody's ever right or wrong, your opinion is your opinion, who cares. If someone loves TASM2 or Jurassic World, that's their beef. I personally love Resident Evil Retribution. I think it's totally awesome and weird. I don't know, from my POV I think open-mindedness is key from everyone's perspective.
    I also gotta point out that with your Dragon Ball Z point you kind of contradicted yourself. The way I see it, calling Dragon Ball Evolution "the worst film in the history of cinema, period" is a product of being a fanboy. The only reason you hate that film so much is because you have brand loyalty and you hate to see something you love ruined (there's nothing wrong with that) - I could be dead wrong, but that kind of extremity only comes through because of what you guys define as "fanboying".
    And also - because even though I shouldn't have to clarify this - this is just my opinion.
    Still love u 4ever Chris.

      +Dani Porfirio That's actually a fair point, and I'm sure their intentions in making this video were this exactly, I just feel like the video itself comes off as closed-minded because all it seems to do is slam those whose opinions don't line up with what they consider "good". Granted, that's THEIR opinion, so it's all cool - just the idea that there are universal truths, and anyone who wants to enforce their opinions that are contrary to those universal truths is wrong seems a little messed up to me. I'm just saying that there's no right answer, I guess. I don't know.

      +astrohkid Nobody can have a right or wrong opinion, you are right about that. I like a lot of bad movies, that doesnt mean I am wrong because thats my opinion. If I was to sit here and say these bad movies that I like were good films then I would be wrong. I used this example in an earlier conversation but if you dont like The Godfather than you are not wrong but if you say "The Godfather is a shitty film." then you are wrong. Theres a difference between your opinion and quality of filmmaking. Its almost disrespectful to filmmakers and the whole process of making movies to say "Theres no good or bad" and "Nobody is right or wrong, opinion is opinion." There are expert filmakers out there who have mastered the craft and things like writing, directing, acting, editing, lighting etc. are all measurable in terms of quality, without even considering whether or not you like a movie.

      +Dean444ful I actually think that TASM is arguably the best spider man movie, period. The only reason it gets flak is because nobody was ready to re-live the whole origin story so soon. Grittier, Andrew was a better Peter/Spider Man, and the story arc was pulled straight from the 90s cartoon (more or less).
      I don't know why people defend the Raimi trilogy so much. I was a kid and a huge Spider Man fan at the time it came out but it just felt a little cheesy and off in tone. The Raimi movies surfaced during the awkward pre-marvel studios era where directors wanted to interpret the source material as their own vision, rather than just making the characters as the comics intended.
      Impressive as it was, even the Doc Ock fight didn't sway me. It was an overly drawn out slug fest, more akin to a watered-down Superman fight (also not helped by being a broad-daylight spectacle rather than a showdown in some secret lab or warehouse at night etc). Spider man never faced Ock like that - he had to be clever and use webbing and other tricks while avoiding his tentacles to succeed, and there are plenty of other details that didn't match the Spider Man vibe.
      Anyway, just my two cents.

    • @Dean444ful
      @Dean444ful 8 років тому +6

      kaleidoscope eyes I actually like the Raimi Spider-Man movies (except for the last) but yes, I agree that the tone was off. And Garfield was definitely the superior Parker/Spider-Man. And I hate that people complain that he's too good looking since Garfield actually looks similar to Peter_Parker. I mean TAMS isn't perfect but it in no way deserves the shit it gets.

    This is the problem I have with my family when we get together. They like or love practically every movie - I'm the only critical one which they interpret as negative. My own family is contributing to the decline of cinema but I will continue to fight the good fight!

    you guys are two of my favorites... thank you for keeping it 100. there is a time and place for filler movies (fun but nothing in the content department) but we WANT classics in every genre!! thank you for letting the studios know how the real fans feel! i detached my thought from Terminator Genesys and actually enjoyed it aside from some poor acting (no emotion per usual from Jai Courtney and the queen of dragons) and overacting by the villain (John Connor) but as a stand alone it was entertaining... i have major issue with them deciding to completely unravel everything that the original films created!
    KEEP IT UP!!

    i will always adore the Lord of the Rings trilogy... when the Hobbit movies were being released, the fanboy in me would lie to myself and act like i loved them. now that it's over, i feel free to say THEY'RE NOT AS GREAT AS LOTR!
    that felt good. thanks for opening up my eyes Chris.

      I felt the same way about An Unexpected Journey, I don't know if I would still like it the third time though. However, Desolation of Smaug and Battle of Five Army's were both so bad that I almost walked out of both. They were so cartoony and ridiculous that I get angry just thinking about them. Why Peter Jackson, WHY!?!?

      I more or less LIVED The Hobbit when the first one came out. Now I've turned my back on the whole trilogy altogether, with no plans of rewatching them. I absolutely hated the cgi mess we got in the third one. Like you, I was blinded by my love for the masterpiece that is the lotr trilogy.

    Great discussion guys. Definitely made me more aware of my own "fanboy" and others. If so many people continue to fanboy over their fav's when the film product is actually bad than studios will give everyone crap. I'm actually really worried about Batman V Superman. Especially watching trailer #2. Damn.

    I'm sorry, but you are very contradictory in your attempt to not make it seem like you are disregarding the validity of other people's opinion. What I heard was basically "you are allowed to like movies that are "bad".... you just have to see the bad things we did, and agree that they are bad, and do NOT support the movie or speak positively about it, because then you will harm us REAL movie lovers fight to get GREAT movies, and not just the mediocre ones that YOU accept as good enough, by letting the people behind the movies believe it was good enough, and they don't need to do better". So... I can like a movie that you find bad, but if I do not share your ill opinion of the movie I am harming movie goers everywhere by accepting bad films.... gee, thanks for allowing me that right, I guess?
    Now, I have long had a great deal of respect for you as a reviewer, and have had my view on a movie impacted by you on several occasions because you have great insights and knowledge, but.... while you were obviously trying not to be condescending you did not succeed in my opinion. This was the first time I have felt you considered yourself above others, and that you consider us, the viewers, as less than you, and I found that disappointing. You have always seemed to me to like a guy that always tried to be fair in your reviews, and to see both the good and the bad in each movie, even when you felt the bad overshadowed the good, and I always felt you acknowledged and respected subjectivity instead of considering yourself the one true judge of what is good and bad. Here it seemed like I was wrong in thinking that, which is sad.

      +sarah4hp Couldn't have said it better. The only fact about movies is that they are subjective. There is no bad or good because everyone has a different taste, mindset and experience, when it comes to watching a movie.

    • @LockeWick
      @LockeWick 8 років тому +5

      +Mr. IDGAF Which is the subjective aspect of films, there is an objective aspect of film making which is how well the film is built which is where critics look at which is the writing, directing, editing, acting, ect.
      Did I enjoy Jurassic World? Hell yeah but it had a lot of terrible aspects to it which are but not limited to, boring side stories that were completely unnecessary (like the children and definitely the parents), plot holes galore, and so much dumb happening everywhere. All of it made the film a lot worse then it could of been, just removing the childrens' side story would of vastly improved the film since the whole divorce storyline had nothing to do with the film's actual story.

    • @ThisIsMyFullName
      @ThisIsMyFullName 8 років тому +6

      +Mr. IDGAF That's just not true. There's a general structure to all art forms, that takes root in our perception and understanding. If everything simply was subjective, then popularity would only be based on luck.

    • @sarah4hp
      @sarah4hp 8 років тому +2

      ThisIsMyFullName But our feeling impact how we react to everything around us. For example, a mediocre movie might be viewed as the worst movie of all time by you because every minor flaw is blown out of proportion by your love for the source material etc. Because you love something SO much the disappointment with every minor thing they didn't get right will be way higher than under other circumstances, and your judgment of the movie way harsher than it might otherwise have been. Same way the other way around - the things they got right might make you so ecstatic and overjoyed that it easily makes up for any flaws, and still makes it an amazing experience for you, while others experiences were a lot less enjoyable because the moments that made the movie so memorable and impactful for you didn't have the same effect on them. Your emotions are always with you, as is your emotional baggage and past experiences, and they impact what your experience with any movie will be.
      And who is to say that one is more right than the other? There might certainly be flaws in the movie that were enough to make the viewing experience very unenjoyable for some. That doesn't mean that those who were very impacted by the moments they got right, and as such loved the movie, are wrong. They just had a very different experience because of their relationship to the source material, past experiences that made them relate a lot to what happened in those moments, or whatever the case might be. And maybe flaws that drive some crazy enough to be unable to enjoy the movie will hardly be noticed by others because they are inconsequential to them, and as such their experience will be vastly different.
      And sure there are ways to analyze film making for professionals who have been taught those analytical tools, but the way you do so is again impacted by who you are. What approaches and methods you are partial to, and which you are not, will impact what constitutes a successful movie in your eyes, and what doesn't. And that's okay, we shouldn't have to apologize for being who we are - but we do need to respect that not everyone will agree with our opinions and tastes.

    Why do people hate so much on The Dark Knight Rises? Batman Begins and The Dark Knight also have plot holes. in Batman Begins, the whole plan of Rah's Al Gul makes no sense, because if the toxin was already there why didn't anyone get it? Don't people have hot water or take showers. Also why does Rahs say that Bruce left him to die?
    How does Bruce contact Alfred to get him? Why does Scarecrow have a different reaction to the drug than everyone else? Then The Dark Knight. In the opening scene, why doesn't anyone point out the fact that a bus crashed in to a building and the other busses did not do anything? Doing what Batman did with Lao in China would cause tension between China and USA. How come everyone dies when the Joker has the police station explosion and he is just standing like nothing? Joker says he doesn't want to Kill Batman, but what if Dent had been Batman? He almost killed him. Jokers plan makes no sense. Is he psychic or something? How did he come up with all that? How did he know Batman. would be in the interrogation room and have play his little game? What happens after Batman saves Rachel from the fall? And why not just blame Joker for all Dent did?

      +Jonathan Garcia Bruce left who he thought was Rahs in the burning mansion to die. And everyone has a different reaction to the toxin based on their fears. I actually though this was really clever. When Crane gets dosed Batman looks like a demonic creature. A ghoul. Crane was scared of Rahs al Ghul.

    *Chris, let me summarize GT for you.*
    Arc 1:
    Pilaf steals the "prototype" Black Star Dragon Balls that scatter across the universe when used and must be retrieved within a year or the planet explodes. He wishes Goku to be a kid again. Kid Goku, Pan, Trunks and a little robot go on an original Dragon Ball rip-off adventure through space finding them.
    Arc 2:
    A liquid android named Baby created by the race the Saiyans evicted for Planet Vegeta discovers about Saiyans on Earth and travels there to avenge his dead race. Baby spreads like a virus through everyone and chooses Vegeta as his main host. This next bit is actually the only cool part of GT. The more of Vegeta's power Baby uses, the more robotic Vegeta starts to look. He eventually expands Vegeta's power into a version of Super Saiyan 3. To counter this, Goku decides to use Super Saiyan while in the Great Ape form to achieve Super Saiyan 4.
    Arc 3:
    Dr. Gero and the doctor who created Baby conspire in hell. They develop another Android 17 as well as a portal from hell to Earth to send him there. The two Android 17's merge into Super Android 17 and gets defeated shortly after.
    Arc 4:
    The team collects the Dragon Balls to recover from the last arc, but due to overuse, a fat, nicotine-smoking blue dragon comes out instead, grants no wish, and splits into 7 smaller dragons. They eventually reform into one Omega Shenron. Goku and Vegeta become Super Saiyan 4 Gogeta and fighs him.

    I have fanboyed over movies before and have been in denial about the quality of a film which I was really excited for. However I do not count The Dark Knight Rises as one of those films. I loved the Dark Knight Rises when I first saw it and I still love it to this day because I believe it is a fantastic movie. Having said that, since my first viewing (during which I thought it was an almost perfect film), I have begun to acknowledge that the film has a few flaws. However I only see these as rather minor flaws and they do not really affect my enjoyment of the movie. The fact that I did not notice these flaws at first was not because I was in denial, it was because I was so wrapped up in the amazing story of this truly compelling blockbuster. I doubt that I would have ever acknowledged The Dark Knight Rises' flaws if it weren't for me going back and re-watching the film many times and hearing other people complain online.

    I enjoyed Terminator Genisys because it had a happy(ish) ending, compared to the others, anyway. I'm too emotionally attached to The Amazing Spider-Man 2 because I watched it during a rough time in my relationship, and I was just so emotionally invested in Gwen and Peter...and when she died, I remembered balling my eyes out. Sad, huh? A 17 year old guy wailing like a baby during a superhero movie in a packed theater. I can scratch that off my bucket list hahaha
