Bad experience? Ok. Picture this: I'm brazilian, but I watch movies in english (they have subtitles) and sometimes a child is in the theater and can't read the subtitles, let alone understand english. Guess what happens? The parent reads EVERY SINGLE LINE to the child. That is just... evil.

Exactly. This is kinda tangential because it wasn't at a movie theater, but I was at a Broadway play and the women in front of me wore their hair in an obnoxious style that blocked my vision, they were recording the play and taking selfies, and they talking the whole god damn time. I ask them to be quite, as I should, yet they get all rude and defensive as if I'm the problem. JUST SHUT THE FUCK UP. It's not that hard.

I know the perfect way to fix the problem. Make theatre chairs that are similar to massage chairs, so if someone starts talking through the movie, it will raise an uncomfortable bump on the back of their chair and light up a small display that says "if you want you chair to be comfortable again, stop talking". You only need mild discomfort to make them stop.

I loved that scene, it does annoy me in real life where people are even politely asked to be courteous and then they have developed this mentality where they know that if they are loud and give enough attitude that most people will back down because it is more than they wanted to deal with. When people tell me that white people for example don't hit their kids enough (which at least isn't true for me) I reply but did yours hit you for the right reasons.

I know I´m late commenting this, but... Things haven´t changed. Just watched "Rise of Skywalker". Behind me sat an old man, having sweets from a bag, that made a real loud noise, when grabbing the sweets. After constantly wording out things he saw on the screen while the previews and grabbing constatly into the loud bag. I hoped he´d shut up, as soon as the movie started. Of course he didn´t.
The movie started. He grabbed the bag and commented everything he saw... After 5 Minutes, I turned around, held a finger before my mouth and made the universal sound for "Keep it quiet, please". The man didn´t react, but kept on doing his stuff. Another minute later, I turned around and asked, if he could please stop to make the noises, because it keeps me from enjoying the film. He said "It´s okay.", but didn´t change his manners at all. Another few minutes later, I turned again and asked again, this time a little louder, but still friendly. He told me to change my seat, if I can´t stand it. I told him, that I paid for exactly this seat and won´t sit anywhere else, since the room was crowded. I asked a final time for him to be quiet. So he threw his now empty bag of chocolates after me.
I never felt so desrespected in my life at all. He tried to bother me by shaking his popcorn after he finished the sweets and never stopped talking until the movie ended. Unfortunatly noone else ever spoke up. That´s the most annoying thing... Everyone else is not brave enough to skeap up against cinematic hooligans.

Movie theaters should have a button on each chair to send up an alert that someone is ruining the experience. If a certain percentage of the audience presses the button within say a minute or two's time, the usher gets notified and investigates.
This eliminates two problems: 1) polite moviegoers don't have to confront the offenders. They don't even need to get up. 2) The theater can better justify getting involved, because they have numerical data telling them just how many people are having a bad experience and are less likely to return. In fact, they could probably correlate these numbers over time and see how it affects revenue.
Also, buttons are cheap, and wiring them up (or using wireless) to a numerical display with some rudimentary programming super simple.

As long as they quietly sent a worker in to investigate *before* taking action to prevent large groups of friends (a group of 5 people could be a super-majority in a 7-8 person theater) from getting innocent people kicked out, it would be so wonderful.

I was actually lucky enough to have the most heavenly cinematic experience a few days ago. I decided to go watch "parasite" after work by myself and it was a movie that I was really looking forward to since all the critics and reviews of it had been magnificent. I turned up to the movie and there was literally only five other people with me, all of them elders who were there for the same reasons. I watched this masterpiece in silence, with the best seat in the middle of the theater and with no interruptions whatsoever. An experience that every film fanatic deserves.

This isn’t quite relevant to cinemas, but it’s similar. I went to a Classical music concert a last year and it is pretty much like going to a cinema in the sense that you sit in silence and listen. So I went to the Royal Albert Hall (you know, one of the most famous concert halls in England which only accomplished artists perform at) and and the amount of people that sit on their phones with the brightness all the way up is ridiculous. How can you sit on your phone during a live performance of Beethoven’s 5th Piano Concerto and 9th Symphony??? It’s disrespectful to the conductor, it’s disrespectful to the orchestra, it’s disrespectful to the soloist and it’s disrespectful to everyone in the hall. I just will never understand some people and I suppose I’m grateful that I am not one of those rude people.

As someone who works at the movie theatre *and* watches many films for free, I can tell you - WE DON'T LIKE IT EITHER. It happens about once every two screenings or so that I'll be sitting down in an auditorium, and some folks will come in and play around on their cell phones, or loudly talk about what's happening on-screen, or chatting out loud just because they don't think "the film is good enough yet."
A couple of experiences. As a filmgoer and an employee.
First one was during *Manchester By the Sea*, of all movies - there were these two ladies that would laugh ferociously loud throughout the entirety of the film, as if they were watching a Will Ferrell comedy or something - it didn't matter if the movie was actually trying to be funny or not. They'd be half a theatre away from them and you'd be hearing their commentary about the film all the way through. I would have done something, but just when I was about to get fed up and do something about it, some miracle would happen and I'd end up calming down, up until the point where they'd start all over again.
Another one was during *Life*, where this old lady was prattling on about God-knows-what to her husband, unendingly. It was fine at first, when it was just the trailer, but then the opening scene began to play, and she was still talking. Feeling like she wouldn't stop, I lost my patience and asked her to stop - all she said was that "the movie hadn't started yet." Apparently, because she feels differently about film than we do, she gets to talk until it's "started". Nice.
The most recent experience happened when I was cleaning a theater. I went into *Wonder Woman* a few minutes early to hopefully get it cleaned up a bit faster - and at the very top of the auditorium, I could hear howling laughter and roars from a group of teenagers up top. The other, silent filmgoers closer to the bottom of the theatre left almost immediately when the credits started rolling. As one lady was leaving, I stopped her - I asked her if they'd been like that throughout the entire movie, to which she replied "pretty much".
I had to apologize to her. I felt so bad that anybody would have to deal with that after paying money to see this. This really pissed me off. Even more bothering was the fact that they seemed to have such little faith in the system that they never even came and told us. The teenagers were still screaming and hollering at the top of the theatre, but I wasn't going to let that slide. I went up to those teenagers and told them not to come back if they were ever going to be that loud during a movie again. I would have got a manager to kick them out earlier if I'd known they were pulling a stunt like that.
That shit pisses me off as much as it does the rest of you. We do care, at least, at our theatre. I'm sorry you guys have to deal with this, and if we could put a stop to all of it, we would, but people just don't listen to rules, and we don't have the kind of money to hire people to constantly regulate these theatres. If somebody is being disrespectful in the audience, please, please tell us. I don't know about other theatres, but I'll do the best I can to ensure that you can enjoy your movie without that kind of hassle. I love movies as much as the rest of you.

Is it just me, or has this issue gotten WAYYYY WORSE AFTER COVID??!!
Before it, I only had like two instances I could remember of bad movie goers. After Covid, almost HALF of the showings I’ve been to have had people who are super loud and won’t shut up! And it never feels like it’s worth the hassle to tell them to stop talking cause THEY see YOU as the crazy one. And it’s always a group of people who are being total smart alecks and are picking apart the movie for everyone to hear.
I probably sound crazy, but I just have to let off some steam after watching “Everywhere All At Once” tonight. I had a guy next to me who was on his phone for half the movie, and even had the volume up at one point. Even though it was just him, he was still talking out loud at points during the movie. If you’re going to do that crap, WAIT FOR THE MOVIE TO GO TO DIGITAL!! It only takes like a month now.
I had to get all of that rage off my chest haha. Hope this helps someone else as annoyed as I am about movie going audiences today.

A lady brought her baby to Endgame. A brief reminder is that Endgame was a movie that was hyped for nearly 10 to 11 years. The lady with a baby sat right next to me, and as soon as the movie started... the crying began. Thankfully it ended at the halfway point, but I was so angry that someone has the audacity to actually bring their child, who they know will full and well cry, to a cinematic event I had been looking forward too since I was a kid. It takes another level of ignorance for that.

The last movie I ever went to in a theater was "The Dark Knight Rises" in 2012. I haven't been to a movie since. - I used to think I was jinxed. That I was just "unlucky" sitting next to some jackass who thought nothing of talking throughout the entire movie or turning their pink popcorn wrapper into a musical instrument. But I eventually realized ... I wasn't unlucky. That's just society now. It is FILLED with inconsiderate people.
So in 2014, I spent a bunch of money to turn a room in my house into a mini-theater. I bought a 75" screen and installed subwoofers in the floorboards under the 3 couches and tweeters in the walls. I realize that's not an option for most people. It's was expensive. But that decision I made came from so many horrible movie-going experiences. From other mover-goers who seemed to be totally oblivious to the fact that other people sitting around them didn't want to hear them making comments, or hear their screaming children, or hear them munching on popcorn like they'd been starved for a year..

I went and saw Maleficant: Mistress of Evil with my girlfriend and her 3 other friends. My girlfriend was quiet the whole time, but her friends talked the whole damn time. It wasn’t whispering, it was full on TALKING! There were children in the theater and her friend would say “Barbecue sauce on my titties” as loud as possible. Then her other friend would say “BE QUIET” really loudly. My girlfriend was really embarrassed and slumped down in my seat in embarrassment. After the movie ended me and my girlfriend litterally ran out and left them in there so we wouldn’t be associated with them by the staff. The movie sucked anyway but that doesn’t change the fact that there are other people in the theater who might like it.

The most insane theatre experience I ever had was during hereditary, Thursday night opening weekend. We got there early, picked our seats and everyone seemed excited to be there, there was talking during the previews, and once the movie started it was absolutely DEAD SILENT, it was wonderful. Until about 20 minutes in, when these two jackasses walked in and were yelling at each other and laughing. They walked up the stairs yelling “so and so where are you at?! WHERE ARE YOU AT? WHERE?!” And I mean hereditary is intense as hell, so I’m already on edge. Then this guy in the middle just yells “can you shut the fuck up?!” And a fight almost breaks out because this yelling idiot was just like “you wanna take this outside?!” It was uncomfortable to say the least. The most ridiculous part? Those two idiots left 10 minutes later and didn’t come back. What an absolute farce.

One of my worst recent movie going experiences was seeing Jordan Peele's "Us" in a theater filled with people who clearly didn't care about the movie at all. They expected some dumb slasher, got some movie to think about and just figured laughing at their own jokes the entire movie was the best course of action. It seriously impacted my enjoyment of the film and every time I think back about that film I think of how awful my time there was.
On the other hand, I was invited to a preview event of the new Halloween movie; this audience was mostly made out of press and die-hard fans of the franchise. The entire movie everyone was dead quiet, right until the credits began to roll and everyone was clapping and cheering, clearly excited about the film they just saw. I'm not one to clap or cheer at the end of a film, but the entire experience just reminded me that there are good audiences still going to see movies and when that happens you will still be able to be immersed in the movie. I loved it.

Rules for being in a movie theatre:
    1. Don't talk. Nobody wants to hear your commentary or other unnecessary words.
    2. Don't use your cell phone. The movie at most is 2.5 hours long you'll survive not checking your Facebook and shit for 2 hours. If its an emergency just step out of the theatre and talk it in private.
    3. Leave your babies at home. Hire a sitter or something but for the love of God don't bring your obnoxious crying offspring to the movies, especially if you know its gonna be a loud movie.
    4. Open your snack outside of the theatre so no one else has to hear your failed attempt at opening a bag of sour patch kids silently.
    5. If you bring your kids to come watch make sure they know to be quiet and not ask a questions about everything that's going on.
    6. Bathe before coming to the movies. For Christ sake no one wants to know what your ass smells like after not showering for a few days. It literally takes 5 minutes to take a shower.
    7. If someone is being loud or obnoxious and you're closest to that person please be courteous and ask them to be quiet for everyone else. Or at the very least tell the ushers.
    8. Have fun. Everyone spent hard earned money to enjoy th marvel of modern day cinema so just be silent and take it all it.

I'd feel rude, and even kinda embarrassed, sitting there trying to get a bag open and making rustling sounds. But that's not near as bad as the truly rude people. It's ridiculous that people can be so loud, obnoxious, and rude in a movie, and even more so that they don't care at all about the people around them. And may then get butthurt and offended when someone asks them to stop!

I've only gotten really mad at a moviegoer one time in my life. I was sitting right behind her and her friends and she just kept talking really loudly. I just took it, and hoped they would stop. But after about 45 minutes of her non stop LOUD talking (mind you, some lady asked her to be quiet and she wouldn't listen), I got petty, so I immaturely start kicking the back of her seat every time she was loud. After about five minutes of me kicking her seat she says (without turning around) "Stop kicking my fucking seat". At this point my blood was boiling so I just shout "I will when you shut the fuck up". She then got really quiet, and after about 1 minute she looked at her friends they all left the theater.

    Here's my experience:
Me and my family went to see Incredibles 2 back in 2018. Mind you, my family had already seen it before in the theaters and I haven't, so I was the only one going to see the movie for the first time.(btw, loved the movie it made me laugh a lot) So we go into the theater and the seats are 80% of kids, 15% adults and 5% teenagers. Me and my family sit in our seats in the middle row of the theater. I had to sit at the end of the row next to a teenager and right when the first line of dialogue was spoken from the movie, I knew this was going to be annoying. The teen right next to me started, not commenting or looking through his cell phone, but echoing the exact dialogue from the movie, I kid you not, word for word from Incredibles 2. 5 - 10 minutes into the movie I couldn't take it anymore, so I asked him politely to please stop talking and his response was the best thing I heard that day:
    "Bruh who cares kid."
(fyi, I was also a teen, not a kid, in fact I might have been the same height as him), so you can imagine how mad I was. Luckily my parents noticed the situation and switched seats with me, but man...
It is just sad that people nowadays just don't respect people that are trying to have a good time and not just ignore, but be rude about it as well.
This is being posted in 2020 btw, I haven't been able to get it out of my mind since.

    I have a few ideas:
    1) Bring back ushers that stay in the theater for the entire run of the film. They can handle issues like talking, cell phone use and seating as the problems arise. Plus people are more likely to be on their best behavior if there is some form of "authority" figure present.
    2) have the theater provide noise canceling headphones (I'd even be fine with the theaters charging a reasonable amount if you want to use them). or provide a jack in the chair for people to bring their own head phones.
    3) Enforce the rating restriction. For R rated movies - children under 17 MUST be accompanied by an adult - not just let mom purchase two tickets for deadpool for her 8 and 9 year olds.
    4) mandatory cell phone lockers - the push back won't be as severe as you may think. I've been to pre screenings where this was enforced and besides a little bit of grumbling it wasn't a huge issue.

Got to the point where we turned and out of frustration told them to shut up and control their kid. Luckily they were quiet after that.

Hm. I guess there are situations where it works. But the worst experience I once had in a movie theater (in "The Village") there were a group of white "ghetto girls" in the last row who terrorized the whole room. They just sat there and chitchatted loudly or dealt with their mobile phones as if they weren´t aware to be in a movie. And a lot of people asked them to shut down, but they just gave brazen answers. One man who was there with his girlfriend tried to get loud and to threaten them enough to stop it. But they also get more and more aggressive and shouted at him. It would have nearly come to a fight.
Then it calmed down for some moments and in this time one woman just got out and a few moments later one cinema employee entered the room. And everybody applauded. He seemingly didn´t feel well and found it odd. But then he asked the girls to get up and leave the theater. They began to argue ("Huhh? But we didn´t do anything!!!") and the whole rooom shouted "Yes, you absolutley did!" In the end they had to leave, I guess one warned the man who argued before with them that he should watch out, that they would wait in front of the building to beat him up. I realy don´t know what went wrong with this kids..

My bad experience in a movie theater was with Annabelle: Creation. The movie just came out. Where I live, when I go to a movie theater to see a movie I'm excited to, I meet a lot of annoying people. But the worst one is with teenagers, especially when they're with groups of friends. I may have chosen the right time to see it. They are super excited (too much tho) to see it, they are sitting right behind me and during the first 15 minutes of the movie, they are starting to talk loud and kicking on my seat. I turn to them and say :"can you guys stop talking? I'm trying to watch the movie." So, 10 minutes later, they keep talking. I see a lot of people turning their head on them. I keep telling them the same thing. During the whole movie, it was like this. Just when the movie was about to finish, the mom of one of these kids show up, and they are talking LOUDER. It was super irritating. I was so pissed that I couldn't enjoy the movie as much as I wanted that, after the screening, I asked for a refund. It's the first time I had to do this. This was the worst experience I lived.

Any of the three Spider-Men does as little as fart or slightly cough and there were “HOOOs” and “WHOAAAAAs” from the audiences, and it was at least 30% of the whole theater. Now, almost all of them were teenagers, and since there were a lot of them scattered all across the large imax theater nothing could be done about it, so I just sat there and deeply contemplated what kinda values these kids are inheriting from their parents.

This was 6 years ago… it’s 2023 and this shit is STILL happening. I’ve been through a lot, and I mean A LOT of of movie theater experiences where you have people constantly taking you back into reality when all you want to do is see a movie. My wife and I went through this a couple times lately throughout the year. We had a group of loud talking and texting teenagers when we saw Creed 3, there were kids stomping all over the aisles when we saw Scream 6 (seriously, who brings 5-6 year old kids to an R rated slasher film??) and the worst was those assholes who bring babies, this happened in Super Mario Bros. Movie, Guardians of the Galaxy 3, and recently with Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse… why would you bring a baby to a movie theater? Their memory chain is smaller than peas in a pod, they won’t know what’s going on, and they spend the majority of the day crying to get your attention… because they’re babies!! If the reason is because they can’t find a sitter, well then YOU don’t go to the theater and deal with your parental responsibilities. Your wants and needs are put aside for your kid.
Probably the worst experience I have had by far was when I saw SMILE back in October… oh my god, it’s traumatizing. The theater was packed and by the first trailer I knew this was gonna be an issue. There were a bunch of grown adults who were so overly loud, they were talking throughout the movie, they were laughing at nothing during the movie, I keep seeing phones out from people, even so many occasions where they were taking flash pictures of the screen or even flashing lights in my aisle directly to my face when I was trying to watch the movie. There was even a moment where 2 blonde teens come out of nowhere and sit in front of my aisle… and they were pulling their phone out and one shouted “DON’T OPEN THE DOOR!!” and she did it intentionally to be annoying… you have no idea how much I was fuming inside, I wanted to explode. It was disgusting how people are this disrespectful to others who just want to simply watch a movie and get insecure when they get called out for their bullshit.

I know how you feel. I went to go see the Rise of Skywalker the other day and had something similar happen. I had heard about how emotional the movie was beforehand and I wanted nothing more than to have my face melted by this epic conclusion to a 42-year-old story. I love having emotional experiences during movies/TV shows. I cried during the beautiful finale of Gravity Falls not so long ago and I wanted to be rattled in a similar way by The Rise of Skywalker. This did not happen. The impact of the wonderful ending was ripped away by none other than my family who went with me to see the movie. There is a tragic death scene later in the movie and I didn’t get to appreciate it because my mother burst out laughing. In addition to that, my brother was whispering jokes the entire time and kept telling me how much he hated the movie. Neither of them would stop when I asked them to. My dad was also snoring the whole time. Everyone got mad at me when I called them out afterwards. I’m a relatively positive guy, I don’t usually rant like this so naturally, I forgave them because they all eventually came around and wanted to give the film a second chance. We went again and literally the exact same thing happened. They would not stop making noise. You know that feeling of getting to watch an emotional movie uninterrupted for the first time? Yeah, I will never get to experience that with Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker and that truly saddens me. I asked a girl to go see it with me and haven’t heard back yet. She’s a major Star Wars fan and I know she’s respectful and quiet and the perfect person to watch a movie with. If anyone can redeem the damage my family did to my Star Wars movie-going experience, it’s her. I hope she says yes. I would love to finally get to watch the darn movie.

I tried to just ignore it but they kept on talking. I eventually turned around and gave them a look, but that clearly didn't do anything. So a while later I turned around and shushed them but they still continued talking. The only reason I'm so angry about this is because I am a huge Batman fan, and going to see such a film in the IMAX theatre makes it even more special. Went and saw The Big Sick with my parents at this theater near a place I recently moved to. It was the first time I've been to this theater, and after the trailers, instead of a generic "please silence your phones" graphic, they had some skit where a whole bunch of people at one of the chain's theaters were explaining in detail why you shouldn't use your phone during the movie. Halfway through the Amazon Studios intro (so like, ten seconds after the phone bit), some woman in the same row as us starts playing around on her phone with full brightness that I can see through my peripherals. My mom and I both grilled her shortly after, and she kept her phone away the rest of the movie.
That honestly might have annoyed me enough to ruin the movie for me, but thankfully it was well done enough that it was easy to forget about her.

Some Indian woman comes in 20 minutes into the movie (as in the actual movie, the trailers were already long passed) with her two kids, one of whom would stamp the floor or squeal like an infant (he had to be at least 6 years old) for extended periods of time. After trying and failing to tell him (or get his negligent mom) to stop, I reported them to the managers twice and another employee once, but they did nothing.
Finally, I sat directly behind them, and whenever the kid would make any kind of noise that didn't pertain to the movie (I'd be fine if they laughed at funny parts or gasped at scary bits), I would tell him to quiet. Not long after, she went into this tirade about how I'm picking on her kids (as if asking your kids to be the least bit respectable to the others around them is a form of bullying), that there's no one else in the theater (there were 7 others, and I mean *were* 7, because one woman got fed up and left three quarters of the way through, which the mom of course denied), and that it was a kid's movie, which apparently meant it was perfectly okay for her hellspawn to treat the theater like their playground. The noisy kid continued to be noisy for the rest of the movie, and I left wordlessly as the mother continued yelling at me when it was over.
Thankfully, I work where I went, so the only money I spent was the buck-fifty I spent on my coffee (employees get free movies and half-off select concessions), and I plan on seeing it again in the near future with another friend, hopefully to better results. As an usher, I take a very low-tolerance approach to noisy and disruptive filmgoers, and I'm sure as shit going to be vigilant about it this weekend thanks to her.
EDIT: Saw it again last week in 3D with a friend, far better experience. The worst thing (if you could call it that) was that there was a severely autistic man a couple of rows who laughed too loudly (as in the kind of fake laughter when a child wants everyone around them to acknowledge that they found what they saw as funny) when Kubo flew the paper into Monkey's butt, but other than that, total silence. It was beautiful.

I remember Scream 4 in theaters with my stepdad on opening day. The theater was full of people who were loud as hell. People were all talking, one lady next to us was talking on her phone. Seriously, I fail to understand how people have the audacity to talk on their phones during a damn movie. That just sickens me.

I’ve got a best friend who talks through movies, she even asks me what the fk is happening while we’re watching it and punches me in the arm, bugging me if I don’t answer or I just whisper a hasty reply. Finally one day I cracked it and said: “if you watched the movie instead of fkn talking, you’d know what was going on!” 🤦🏻‍♀️😂
We went to a vintage theatre to watch Kubrick’s The Shining recently and she didn’t utter a single word! Was the best! 😂

Seeing IT (part 1) in the theater was the definition of pain and I haven’t been to a theater since. I can deal with people using their phones honestly as long as they turn the screen brightness down, I can even deal with people constantly talking as long as they make an effort to be quiet. But good lord that screening man, I had to leave an hour into it because I couldn’t take it anymore

I work in a cinema. You'll like this man!
Our place is almost completely silent. I cover the halls among many other things but I have an equaliser!
If someone is making noise or on a phone? I warn them! If they continue I unleash my weapon upon them. A high powered LED torch that can bee seen from 550 yards away. I go up, position myself and turn that bad motherfucker on right in front of their face! It literally blinds then for about 20 seconds.
The word has spread and we get a high turnout as people speak of that that evil long haired fucker that blinds people so badly they never make another sound in fear I'll do it again. After holding that light on them for about 10 seconds is say, "Don't make me come back!"
    I never have too... :-)

One time I heard bzzzzbzzzbzzz from a girl sitting in the seat next to me for about 10 to 15 minutes in the middle of the movie, trust nothing more distracting than that. She was as ugly a horses ass, hence maybe her breathing counts as well?

Thank you Chris, for describing your viewpoint as one who does reviews. I think you hit it out of the ball park as far as what some in your position go through. I too, love movies, and these are indeed annoying and inconsiderate. Keep making these...someone will eventually get this. I hope that it's sooner than later. You rock.

About those first grade level kids who were respected -- they were probably home-schooled....as I usually find kids with this kind of upbringing are very respectful of others....Good on the home-schooling parents!!!!
