nah. its because he is talking about being masculine to this interviewer, who is asking if there is feminine energy in his music, but he purposefully wore high heels, and a b-cup bra to the interview.
I like how he was always waay ahead of his time and didn't mind having "feminine characteristics" (the interviewer made it sound like a bad thing) because guess what?? we all have "feminine and masculine characteristics" (yin and yang energy). We should all embrace it and find balance as he said. Few people have this level of consciousness. I love this man.
I feel like tool in general are ahead of the curve. Their sound is so unique. But it does have to be said that Maynard is the perfect voice for such amazing sounds. His lyrics provoke thought while thematically being somewhat broad statements about...well, just human existence. We divide ourselves by gender, race, etc but we're all only human. Their music has always been a literal tool. Made so that anyone can use it as they see fit. I can't wait to hear what they have to say to us on the new album.
Thank you! Everything he said in this interview made perfect sense to me. People who say he is being sarcastic are blind to what he is saying. They can’t understand his level of consciousness; because of that, they assume he is being sarcastic. He’s literally saying he is a male and grew up as a male, so he can only imagine what it is like to be a female. Whether your a male or female, we all have emotional characteristics; we all share the same characteristics and emotions, because guess what?? We are all human beings. People also don’t understand that he dresses up a lot during his shows. He might’ve been about to play a show or just finished a show, and that’s why he’s wearing a bra and heals. Think about David Bowie.. he was a male but wore makeup and female clothing. He went on to say that we all have these emotions and they need to be released, and he went on to say that in some cases we are irrational; he said it’s an important movement. The interviewer responded by saying, “Are you saying that being irrational is a feminine quality?” And he said “it’s an emotional quality”. Right there.. he’s correcting her assumption on whether or not he said that being irrational is a feminine quality. The interviewer herself cannot understand what he is saying. So, he has to correct her by basically saying, “no, it’s an emotional quality that ALL humans have, and it’s important to release that in yourself, because we are all human beings.” All he is saying is that he can never have empathy for females because he will never be a female. He can feel bad for the fact that women have periods every month, but he will never be able to know what it is actually like to have a period every month. He will never know completely what it is like to have a feminine point of view. It’s the same concept with several things. For example, I can feel sympathy for my cat, because he has to eat the same boring food everyday. But I will never know what it is like to actually be a cat and have to eat the same boring food everyday.
I don't know but I don't have the feeling the interview is stating the feminine energy he radiates in a negative way. I have the feeling she is kind of challenging him, but really not in a bad way. And seeing the interview it was worth it

This is a message to Maynard. Please reply if you remember this day. There was a concert in Seattle where Tool played with the Rollins Band. Early 90's. Tool still had a van with the Tool logo drawn on it ( painted?). I waited after the concert, outside by the sidewalk. I was hoping for an autograph. I noticed a man beating up a girl nearby and all the people were just standing around...afraid. I tackled the guy, did not strike him, only subdued the attacker. I was a Military Policeman. I could not stand by and let a person get beat up..let alone a small girl. Others then came to aid the girl and some pushed the guy away and told him to shove off. This is when You, Maynard, walked up to me and shook my hand and said "Good job". My friends were amazed saying " Scott, that was Maynard!" I had no idea it was you, but i will take a handshake over an autograph ANY DAY! MAYNARD, DO YOU REMEMBER THIS DAY? IF SO, WILL YOU REPLY? Long time fan, from back in the day...old school skater/punk/thrasher/head. Love to hear from you.
Interviewer: you are really girly. Maynard: na I am a dude that grew up a dude. But I can only imagine how hard it is to be a woman. Interviewer: na you are very girly.
He always knew that having "feminine characteristics" is not about being a female and by knowing that it wouldn't affect his masculinity. I wish everybody could think like him
IMO what Maynard said regarding himself being much more sympathetic - opposed to empathetic - towards a feminine point of view was a very accurate and plausible statement. As a man myself I can say that I feel the same way. The reason being is because although I can sympathize, show compassion, and attempt to gain a better understanding of various feminine beliefs and perspectives, until I have actually "walked in the shoes of a woman" per say, I cannot possibly possess the ability to empathize, or actually SHARE those same feelings of another woman. I've always wondered how my general outlook on life would change if I could...
SwanDuck Yeah I'd say that would be a pretty accurate representation, at least if you're a male who has an athletic build and is somewhat attractive. Even then though I'm not sure it would be the same. This is especially the case when it comes to a woman who is an 8/10 or above on the "hotness scale" (lol yea I know it sounds dumb, but you get my point.) Although women who fall in that category of being extremely beautiful are often pampered by men and given much more positive attention - which is the case for people who are attractive in general - so idk if I would ask someone like that to find out whatit's really like to be a woman as opposed to being a man. Either way I'm sure that as a man I will never possess the ability to fully understand how women have to face certain obstacles in life that simply do not exist for men....
+Adam L it's the same for men. a woman can't possibly understand what it means to be a man, they can't understand what it means to be the disposable sex, "the evil sex", the so called potential rapists, I'm tired of being sympathetic towards women, if they hate their bodies so much, well tough luck, I don't give a shit, we men have done everything we can to legally protect women, even the ugliest woman is given more consideration than above average guys. women can stick their so called problems up their ass. the only place where i truly see women suffering are in war torn areas and places like Africa, and it isn't only the women, the men suffer too.
EccentricSage well i stated facts, do your your research and you would find that everything i stated were facts. most angry feminists are angry at nothing but trivial or irrelevant fears.

@@maxotto9877 Not really. Empathy is to feel another's pain. Sympathy is to understand it. So makes sense actually when talking about a male interpretation of the female. No. Kurt Cobain named his daughter after another Frances Bean. That Frances Bean was put in an asylum for being a feminist and supposed communist. I suggest you look her up. She was an amazing woman. I'm not surprised that both Maynard and Kurt supported her.
@@alexandraw.4012 are you sure? I can't find anything about that. The only other Frances I know of that era was Frances, the guitarist from the Vaselines, which Cobain named his daughter after. But if you're talking about Frances Farmer, the actress, who was institutionalized, it wouldn't make sense. She was an inspiration to Cobain, him having written a song with her name in it (I.E Frances Farmer will have her revenge on Seattle), then there's a hole in there. Why would they want her "freed" if she was already dead? She died in the 70's when Maynard and Cobain were just children. "I dont have my moon every month, im not that connected to the earth" This made me smile. So many men see parts of being female (Not to exclude trans women) as disgusting or unnatural or weird, ive always seen it as beautiful. Women are amazing, so many parts of femininity are gorgeous and unique, im glad there are dudes that respect that.
I respect this man so much because he keeps moving forward and deals with his feelings even though he cant explain or understand some of the feelings he has endured. His music has like a spiritual message of trials and tribulations and trying to find out what is right for him and I am sure that with his life style as a performer and traveling and being famous he must have to adapt and become different personalities many times and then when he has a chance to rest he has to once again sift through all those personalities and try and figure out if its possible to choose one and stick with it? But this man really puts everything he has into performing and he's probably wondering why he's lasted so long, and when is like his voice going to get weaker, or something else to make him different and no longer as he has been? I hope he finds something else to take the place of his talents before something causes him to not be able to do what he does on stage because him and the Guitar man are like "ONE" great performer and band. But of course we all grow older, and besides that we all face nut cases and jealous people that would purposely cause us hardship for whatever reason they are using to try and cause us to change from what makes us different and talented? I am a house painter since I was 26 but I am 52 and I am older but I am still good but my body is saying "Hey, you have done no work for years and I'm out of shape?" Meanwhile my mind is not listening to my body until I start painting and my body starts aching? So shit happens to our bodies over time? But I saw videos of Maynard in his younger days where he was having fun, unsure of himself, behaving not serious but wanting to, and then I compare and see how serious he turned, possessed by every word he sings, trying to be perfect and does perform perfect in my opinion? And his perseverance to me is Green Beret material to me? I mean he's a fighter, and seems to be a genuinely good person to others who treat him good. So I think your GREAT Maynard and your other half who plays Guitar with his long hair covering up his face giving you all the attention because he loves you like a true brotherly love and your happiness is his so he lays low and makes sure you get the attention, for he could be like Angus Young their on AC-DC. who is a great performer but I know Maynard respects the Guitar guy there deeply subconsciously for not trying to get the audience to also "look over at him?" It was something he did way back when. Supposedly people were asking him to support free the whales type causes and so, being Maynard, he decided he'd run his own free Frances Bean campaign as a kind of spoof. Basically saying she needs to be freed from the insane mess that is her mother.
While listening to the album, Opiate, and reading "Demon-Haunted World" by Carl Sagan, he makes mention of a book by Thomson Gilovich, "How To Know What Isn't So". Parallels were drawn on that day.

I have only ever men one compassionate and empathetic female in my life. You only have to look at the art that is produced my men and women to see who really has compassion and empathy. Men make art about the external, they make art about war, family, god and love. Women make art about themselves and their vagina primarily, there is no exploration further than the self. Women can trick you into believing they are compassionate as long as that compassion has some personal gain for them, but it's mostly chemicals in the mans brain making him believe the fairy tale that a women can love as a man loves. Men on the other hand show love through sacrifice and get internal validation from the act as a biological driver. It's time we told the truth so we can maybe survive the demographic winter we find ourselves in.
Some day I hope to find myself randomly sitting next to Maynard and hopefully he'll be in a good mood and we'll have a memorable conversation. That would be really cool. ⚘
I've only opened up about my struggles to women in my life. They are more emotionally supportive and empathetic. Men have only told me to 'get over it' 'brush it off'.

@@SW-fn7cl Makes sense, of course, but not everyone needs or wants that. Sometimes we play roles not to protect ourselves, but to "confuse" people in order to make them think. I wish Tool would get back to making more aggressive music..... I hope the next album is a hairy balled, white knuckled, knock down drag out, manly, fuck you world, heavy metal album. We've explored the feminine for a while now and speaking of balance I would REALLY like to get back to the more masculine and aggressive Tool of years past.
...quite possibly the summarization of the neanderthal thinking of the tools that have not evolved with Tool...ignorance and hypocrisy all rolled into one convenient meathead...
It’s a little tangential but I’m pretty sure he just responds by saying he tries his best to understand but can’t fully because he himself isn’t female, and then he kind of just starts talking about the importance of confronting other points of view and subject matter that is either hard to understand or hard to deal with in order to grow as a person. And like, the fact that he needs that balanced perspective (working towards having feminine energy to balance out the masculine) in order to fully communicate the emotion through the lyrics.
***** Maynard would more likely give a humble answer. Probably to something like the following: I will likely never be able to incorporate a complete anima, but the practice is still something worth attempting. Even though achieving a "perfect" balance of conscious & subconscious (shadow material) into one's Self is likely improbable, but it is still worth going for in the hope of becoming a better being...
***** He mentioned in another ToolArchive clip that he would not appreciate being called or requested to become a teacher since Maynard himself stated he is not certified to be one. However, he does mention being honored when hearing how their music improved the lives of those who did took their music as a means to better themselves. At least something to that degree...
This comment section needs to read some Jungian stuff, then they might realise how far over their heads Tool really has gone. The level of face palm here is pretty monumental. If you missed what he is saying in this interview, you have pretty much missed 99% of the meaning in much of Aenima . MJK does not explain his own meanings in depth, but when you know what he is conveying via the language and symbols he uses (its plastered all over most of their songs, and is VERY distinct when you know what it is) you know what he is getting at. Jungian Ideas are pretty hard to get intellectually (mainly because it has huge intuitive components) and Jung himself was crazy intelligence. He was operating at a level most people don't even realise exists.
Lmfao because one is learnt in reasonable philosophical ideas and can easily recognize those ideas in music and also recommend that fans of said music who are unaware would enjoy said music on a much deeper level if they themselves learnt about these things and even began a process of being a healthier person for it, they are PRETENTIOUS? Good fucking god I truly believe some of humanity is just not capable of deep thought and are just NPCs going through life with whatever fucking programming they were given.
its so interesting that all the male fans dont think he's serious... that his kind of music, his expression couldnt have a feminine energy! he was good friends with tori amos around that time I bet they had a lot of talk about repression of the genders...
He's not being serious, he's being pseudo-condescending. He's making a point, and even though he agrees with the sentiment, the interview in itself is a major joke. MJK in general loves to mess with people, that doesn't mean he doesn't think there's femininity in his music, but he certainly busts the interviewers balls for being so obtuse.
He's doing both, he's showing he is familiar and read into the concepts. But he loves to mess with lame interviewers, the choice of words "live in their shoes" and flashing those high heels.. He's definitly not taking this interview very seriously.

Fantym your feet are going to hurt, maynard.
We haven't had an entertainer with this level of philosophical thought since George Carlin.
I don't know but I don't have the feeling the interview is stating the feminine energy he radiates in a negative way. I have the feeling she is kind of challenging him, but really not in a bad way. And seeing the interview it was worth it
there is no such thing as yin and yang

No is more proper if you say that stupid so called word it makes you look unprofessional
+Adam L Go to a large urban gay bar as a straight male and walk the dance floor. I'm assuming that's kinda what it's like to be a female sometimes.
+Adam L it's the same for men. a woman can't possibly understand what it means to be a man, they can't understand what it means to be the disposable sex, "the evil sex", the so called potential rapists, I'm tired of being sympathetic towards women, if they hate their bodies so much, well tough luck, I don't give a shit, we men have done everything we can to legally protect women, even the ugliest woman is given more consideration than above average guys. women can stick their so called problems up their ass. the only place where i truly see women suffering are in war torn areas and places like Africa, and it isn't only the women, the men suffer too.
a friend of mine recently lost a child. and as I empathize I cannot sympathize only because I don't know what it's like to have a child of my own

She was an inspiration to Cobain, him having written a song with her name in it (I.E Frances Farmer will have her revenge on Seattle), then there's a hole in there.
So I think your GREAT Maynard and your other half who plays Guitar with his long hair covering up his face giving you all the attention because he loves you like a true brotherly love and your happiness is his so he lays low and makes sure you get the attention, for he could be like Angus Young their on AC-DC. who is a great performer but I know Maynard respects the Guitar guy there deeply subconsciously for not trying to get the audience to also "look over at him?" He is definitely a true friend to Maynard. You guys will always be great to me so I guess use can retire knowing this, haha. Peace people.

Of course not. But we were taught that men being sensitive is a bad thing - > a girl thing. ):
Louise s it doesn’t hurt that huge percentages of women have co-opted them as such, though.
he didn't say men can't empathize generally but that he can't empathize with being a woman specifically
***** Maynard would more likely give a humble answer.
Probably to something like the following:
I will likely never be able to incorporate a complete anima, but the practice is still something worth attempting. Even though achieving a "perfect" balance of conscious & subconscious (shadow material) into one's Self is likely improbable, but it is still worth going for in the hope of becoming a better being...
A role model in the least.
***** He mentioned in another ToolArchive clip that he would not appreciate being called or requested to become a teacher since Maynard himself stated he is not certified to be one. However, he does mention being honored when hearing how their music improved the lives of those who did took their music as a means to better themselves.

MJK does not explain his own meanings in depth, but when you know what he is conveying via the language and symbols he uses (its plastered all over most of their songs, and is VERY distinct when you know what it is) you know what he is getting at.
