As a plumber, I absolutely encourage homeowners to try things out on their own if they can before they call us. They can either learn something and fix it themselves or they can see just how difficult the issue is and understand why it takes us a certain amount of time and cost.
I have a question..I had this problem so when I removed the face plate the piece behind it that connects to the drain assembly broke. I didn't buy another face plate. I don't have time to go back to the store for a few days. Is it possible to remove the overflow and put just the face plate back and use the shower regularly?
WORKED! 2 bottles of industrial grade unclogger and it still wouldn’t drain. Tried your method and it didn’t work at first. I decided to try one more time and push the rag a bit further down then seal it against the tub by putting the cover back on with the screws. After pressing the plunger down multiple times I heard the biggest drain noise😂 fully worked!! Thank you again
My tub had been slow to drain for weeks and I’d tried so many things. The snake didn’t catch anything so it wasn’t hair; I tried using the plunger, pouring hot water, mixing baking soda and vinegar… nothing seemed to make a difference and I had water up to my ankles every time I showered. This was the solution that finally worked!! Thank you so much

Instantly followed you on UA-cam right now on 5/14/24. I have used drano gel, a snake, and kept looking at videos throughout today. Looked at this one, found an old rag and got my plunger, it immediately went down. Thank you, thank you, thank you!
As a woman who has never had to deal with these home fixes before, I THANK YOU!!!! I tried Drano, a snake and nothing worked except this. I appreciate you!!!!
That has the old school Kohler drain and an overflow that is SOLID but for others with the more modern overflows be really careful because you can push that overflow out and into the wall behind it and risk breaking joints below. I’m glad they said a wet rag because that does make a difference. If you’re uneasy about doing the rag part you can use duct tape but remove it immediately to avoid left over residue. Be REALLY careful if you’re using a pneumatic plunger (big force of air) because that can break seals and or joints. A small hand snake on a drill will work too. Good luck! Great video!
My Dad was a plumber and taught me to do this! ..and replace toilet tank guts and replace leaky valve between bowl and tank. As a single mother living in another state from Dad - what a $$ saver!
This was a life saver!!! All the hair that came up was ridiculous. It really is the #1 cause. Using a drain weasel to get the hair that was coming up also helped. My tub has never flowed this well. Thank you for the trick! 🥰
My handyman taught me, as an emergency, to pour some detergent on it, then blast it with hot water. To loosen everything up. Repeat when necessary. Then use the plunger.
thank you SO SO SO SO SOOOOO much, i have company coming over tomorrow and the tub was clogged, heating the sweet sweet sound of the drain going down was something i never thought i'd appreciate
I just jam a wet hand towel over it works fine, also any water that does come up through it is just potentially u clogging the overflow aswell, as when the time comes and ya need it, u deff want it to work
Omg!!! Weve had issues with our tub draining slow and today was completely clogged and full of water. My mom tried simply plunging it and it over filled with water. I was about to go to homedepo to buy a new snake. But was watching some videos first on how to do it and stumbled on this simple but amazing video!!!!!!! And violaaaaa!!!!!! It is draining smoothly. Thank you sooo much!!! Saved me a call, a headache and my landlord some money....
Yesterday I YT'd a bunch of videos. 4-8 min. Today I snaked my tub. Lots of hair a junk was removed. Thought I was done. Nope. Worst, no drain at all! YT'd Dave, in 20 sec, complete removal. Saved time and money. Thank you!
Listen folks this absolutely work i just did this to my tub and and worked immediately..listen brother keep up the great work your saving us regular folks time and money
Just spent 5 hours, some cheap drain cleaner from the Dollar Tree, which usually works, and some good old plunging… and NOTHING! Poured hot water down and used your trick and within SECONDS the damn thing started draining again. I feel like an idiot now not thinking about the overflow drain pushing the air up instead of down 🤦🏽♀️ THANKS SO MUCH for this video!!!
Thank you so much. I thought that the tube stopper was stuck and the water wasn't going down. It was super slow. I tried your tip and it worked. Ha woo. Thanks again.
I'm shocked that people don't know this. I remember when i was a kid my mom taught me. She would make me cover the overflow hole of the sink with my hand while she pumps away.
Ow my gosh you are a life saver ❤️ you saved me tons of money and a headach from my boyfriend because my daughter decided to cut and wash her hair in the bathtub and I couldn't get it unclogged for some reason I even used hair liquid unclogger.
Thank you thank you thank you so much . My tub was clogged I tried plugging it but it didn’t work . I tried it your way and it worked like a charm. 😅 much appreciate it bro. Gonna follow you for more useful content
awesome dude. I felt the pressure after securing the rag tightly. Thank you Thank you. You’ve saved me a bundle of bucks. They charged me $200+ last visit
After 9 hours of plungering, combing/picking, snaking, baking soda, and more, I removed my clog after clogging the overflow and plundering for a few more minutes
Thank You so much. All day i have been pouring boiling water/baking soda/vinegar into the tub and plunging. Very stressed at having little results. I took another stab at searching for answers, and voila---your solution worked!
If you have to remove the overflow cover, put a piece of duct tape over the drain (or close whatever drain plug it might have). Murphy's Law will suck those bolts down that drain faster that you can say "Oh crap!"
Thanks. I tried a few other things before this and couldn't get it. I put a rag in the overflow too and pushed through with a plunger and yup. Unclogged real quick. Really helped, thanks again.
That worked slick. I did have 2 plungers so placed one on the overflow and plunged away at the drain. My grandson and I are now officially plumbers!!! Yay!!!
Plumber was supposed to come today.. but something came up been clogged a week.. probably about 4 bottles of drain cleaner did nothing.. I tried this trick but didn’t take the overflow completely off and it didn’t work because I just tried to stuff the overflow with a towel.. the plumber called and said something came up so I figured I would give it another ole college try.. and my plastic plunger started to collapse on my last few pumps like a wiffle ball bat, and as I was ready to give up I hear draining..
Woooowww this videoo is so helpful I haven’t been able to shower in a couple of days because it wouldn’t drain.. when I would plunge water would come out the overflow so like the video I took of the head stuck a couple of rags in & started plunging & the water drained!!! So thank you for the video!!
Thank you SO MUCH for this tutorial! I had tried the baking soda and vinegar method but that didn’t work, then I tried using the plastic hair removal tool and was able to unclog some of the drain but still no results until I came across your video. Got my drain unclogged in under 5 minutes 😎👍
This worked for me, I put my hand over the vent wearing a rubber glove, while using the plunger in the other hand. Duct tape for me didn't create enough vacuum. Thank You.
Thanks!
You are the first Super thanks I’ve EVER gotten. Thank you!

Same
@@smitht717buy another one otherwise water will get behind it and cause mold I have a ton in my garage for every brand
A drain auger does wonders. Invest in one. Almost all clogging issues solved.
@@myguitartwerks7825 What about a regular auger to add more holes to the tub?

Drain was clogged, I saw this video, gave it a shot, it worked 10/10 recommend
Thank you so much this just saved me after 2 hours snaking my tub. I had all but given up and was about to call a plumber

If that overflow clog up how would you know?
None of that has helped me. My shower head constantly drips and after coming home from work, my tub is filled with water and tape won't stick.
My Dad was a plumber and taught me to do this! ..and replace toilet tank guts and replace leaky valve between bowl and tank. As a single mother living in another state from Dad - what a $$ saver!
After $50 in industrial drain cleaners a $40 my tub was clogged followed your video and it worked

I'm glad I came across this video b/c the other ones wasn't this specific. Anyone with plumbing problems I HIGHLY RECOMMEND this video!! 💪🏾
I have been able to use duct tape over the overflow without taking it off. Try it next time!
I feel like an idiot for mentioning this in my comment before reading other comments! Glad others are savvy too.
I used some flex tape that was water proof pretty much same thing and I’ll be damned it worked for me
I just jam a wet hand towel over it works fine, also any water that does come up through it is just potentially u clogging the overflow aswell, as when the time comes and ya need it, u deff want it to work

Was sceptical but this worked like a charm. Had standing water in my tub and needed to do something in a pinch. To be honest I'm stunned. Thanks man.
Absolutely!!
This absolutely works! I saw this vid looking for solutions and BAM, it worked!
Thanks
This worked for me a few minutes ago. Thank you!
Instead of removing the overflow, just put another plunger over it.
I used that method for 45+ years, and you’re in & out in 5 minutes (usually).
yesssssss
That kinda lift stopper gets hair on it and sometimes is the problem 😊
Dude, THANK YOU. The things you learn on UA-cam!
This worked! Spent an hour the other day trying to unclog the shower drain and this worked in a minute! THANK YOU!

We finally were able to unclog our bathtub using this tip! Thank you!

It also works. If you use a shop vac instead of a plunger. That's if there is debris in the drain shoe
Thank you for making this video! I had a tub clogging issue. I tried this method and worked like a charm!

Saved my butt at 3:00 a.m. I couldn't figure out how to remove the drain stopper. The rag tip came in clutch.

Have literally been trying to snake my tub for days now, did this and it fixed it immediately, wouldve eventually had to call a plumber, tysm

Plumbing tip make sure you put the overflow cap back on when this doesn’t work so the real plumber doesn’t charge you extra for trying.
This work perfectly thanks!! Nothing else would work until I tried this. Done in less than 5 mins
Thank you! I thought I had a major issue in my hands but this helped
About to try now. I pray it works
