Excellent video! My late husband was the fix-it man and now I am having to learn how to do much of what he had been doing for years. Videos like yours have really helped with the learning curve and have saved me the trouble and cost of finding a plumber. Thank you for posting.
Wow! Unscrewed the plunger ezpz... full of gunk... cleaned that... drains xlnt ! This is day 2 of trying to clear the drain and after your vid, it only took a couple minutes. You saved me a plumber's call. Thanks!
I'm so grateful for videos like this I put in a maintenance request almost a month ago for my clogged bathroom sink but they never came . I'm so glad I was able to do this myself and the clog was a nice wad of hair mostly and it was where the plug is #1 I went ahead and took the p-trap off anyway because I needed to clean the drain out. Thank you for creating this video. If I can do this anyone can!
Hey man thanks for this video, I got my sink cleaned up in a jiffy. One tip for anyone looking to do this, if you have the style of drain plug that you need to undo from under before you can take it out, I'd recommend that you leave a bucket underneath your sink while doing it to keep any looseness from letting water fall down.
I found the clog in the drain in the drain stopper mechanism. I unscrewed the top and got access to the clog. The lav drains water very well now. Thanks much!
Thank you so much for sharing this information! You saved me alot of time, energy, and money as I was just going to auger the whole drain pipe but all I needed to do was to clean out the sink drain! Keep up the great content!
Always #2. But that means the stopper screen is doing it's job. Ever since I started using that style I have not had to remove a p trap. If I am installing new faucets, the p trap gets replaced, and a good push to close/open stopper (usually included with the faucet kits, for those who don't know). Thanks for your time and posting great information!
Thanks. My bathroom sink has a push-'plug' and a plunger wasn't effective in unblocking the very slow drain. I came upon this video by chance....and I fixed the problem in 5 minutes. I couldn't get the inner bit out (my Allen key was too small) but I could remove a lot of hair & gunk around & below it. Saved possibly A100 in plumber's fees .
Wow! Thanks very much! I was trying to unclog a simple push-plug sink (without the little lift-rod thingy at the top) and this is the best 'how-to' online by far. So well-explained and easy to listen to/follow... even for me (I have no plumbing experience whatsoever!) Much appreciation! 🙂
Ewww, gross. I was so lucky that the second step cured the problem. Thank you for explaining all this so well. I’d been living with a slow-draining bathroom sink for weeks. So glad I found your video!
Thanks Scott. My last problem was worse. I did the three steps, no success. I then removed the gooseneck again, note auger did not work, so I used Turkey baster several days to drop vinegar and baking soda. Still no success. I then used Turkey baster to carefully put drain cleaner down wall pipe. Since I wanted to protect pipes, I swiftly put sink back together and flushed with water. It worked. Note, drain cleaner melted the top of my Turkey baster. Need to be careful with your hands to keep drain cleaner off.
Thank you sir! Initially, I was getting ready to call the plumber, but after your video, I still ended up calling the plumber... Just kidding!! 😂. Clog was just grime in the upper tube. Cleared it out with a large (18") bolt and ran hot water down the drain and "Voila," all clear!!! 😊. Went from 49 seconds to drain a 2 gallon bucket -> to 18 seconds! Thanks again!!!
Great tips! I keep a Zip-It handy around the house for bathtub clogs where hair gathers, but I've also had a lot of success with a plunger for bathroom sinks. Typically the soap scum and slime gathers on the sides and at the bottom of the P trap. Using a plunger and a full sink of warm water will loosen and flush that junk down the drain in no time.
I’m with Jonathan on the p trap replacement!!!! Screw that cleaning the gross old p trap!!! Lol not for me, but a new one! Great video on the cartridge cleaning and numerous tips! You’re more of a man than I when it comes to the gross steps! Thank you as always!
why throw plastic away unecessarily like that?...we should be making as much use of it as possible instead of throwing everything out there to end up in the oceans etc...if it's not cracked, worn or leaking just take a few moments of your time to clean it out...I use disinfectant and a bottle brush...job done.
Thank you very much; you showed me how to disassemble the drain stopper to get to the clog below it to the source of the clog. ( I have not tried this yet.)
Great video - thanks for posting it. You saved me a bit of money and time by checking the stopper first. Sure enough, that was the problem and luckily it all came out in one gross mass! As usual, UA-cam comes to the rescue!
Using these steps the 99% of blockages being removed (bathroom). Thank you much. Usually it mix of hair and residues from soap or toothpaste. Step #2 is mostly "direct hit", cause this actually system's weak spot, since by itself it already reduces the space for water stream plus all that stuck to it. Baking Soda plus Vinegar plus Rinse with Hot Water may replace the Step #1 as quick and very temporary solution.
THANKS SCOTT….GREAT ADVICE…BEEN THERE…DONE THAT MANY TIMES 😂 a result of a wife with long hair 👩 So in my case …all three depending on how long it been…FYI you can install the pop up with out going through the whole…for more frequent cleaning 👍😍😍😍
The best DIY drain fighting tool I've ever used? A wet/dry vacuum. When the tub-shower gets clogged with my female roommate's long black hair, I get my 3 HP Ridgid wet/dry vac, set it to "wet" configuration, run hot water in shower until about 1" of hot standing water is above drain, then shut off water and shove the wet/dry vac's round nozzle onto the drain and hold it tight to the round drain hole for 3 seconds. Remove vac nozzle from drain hole, turn hot water on again for a minute, and check drain rate. Repeat process one or two more times until water is flowing freely, or until enough long hair has been pulled halfway up out of the drain that needle-nose pliers can remove the rest. Dump filthy water from vac into gutter and then wash out inside of vac.
Do yourself a favor and get a hair strainer from the big box store. It'll be so much less work for you. I used to have to snake out my shower drain regularly for the same reason. I had a plumber in the house for a different job and mentioned the recurrent problem to him and he advised me to get a hair strainer. I didn't know they existed. Since I bought it years ago I've not snaked the drain since. They make all kinds, out of plastic. But they also sell a metallic assortment of 3 different sizes that are the best. The medium size fits perfectly in my walk-in shower floor drain and since I am the "plumber" I get to easily clean it before my shower. I don't mind the daily job when I think about the old way. The small one fits a sink if you were to take out the pop up drain plug and I use the large size upside down taped and sealed over the garden tub drain when I bathe (shower) our dog. If you have a regular tub with a shower just look around for something that fits. Good luck.
My plumber advised me to pour in about 1/4 cup bleach into my tub and sink about once per month. This seems to work, but I think this video is perfect for those of us that don't have plumbing tools.
I have the pop-up type with a screw cap which you can just unscrew the top and pick out the grunge to return the sink to proper drain performance in most cases without needing to disconnect the under sink pivot-rod connections.
I wasted money on products like Draino max, to no avail. Simply removing the plunger so I could pull the drain stopper out and using a cut zip tie, I was able to get tons of hair that was stuck at the drain closer pivot point (the thing that opens and shuts the drain). The zip tie was a little flexible but I got enough hair close up that two screw drivers were able to pinch and pull the rest of the way. I should have never wasted money on Draino because it did nothing. Hot water goes down in seconds vs minutes before the fix. Good tip, best of all it was free since I already had the wire tie and basic tools.
Got my subscribe with that zip tie trick. I have a small snake with a bristle end which I always use - cheap at 2-3$ but the zip tie is a cool repurpose trick
#4……..The drain doesn’t go straight down (joist is in the way), I noticed this when the home was built 18 years ago. I cleaned the p trap, etc and it still drained slowly. Next step would be to auger the next 3 feet of pipe around the 22 degree fitting to pass the joist. Thanks for your video! Jim PS……after the holidays…..
Instead of a zip tie, there may be one of those old skinny bottle brushes with a long flexible wire handle around the house. That's what I used. Those bristles really got down to business and cleaned real well.
In my experience it has been the down tube. I take a rag and tie a string to a corner and a weight (like a nut) to the other end of the string. I drop the weight through the down tube and pull the rag through.
@@EverydayHomeRepairs I only do it to my personal home because it is readily available. By the way I sold all my rentals a couple of months ago and I couldn’t resist the the demands on housing. I cleaned out my sink stopper, which it needed, but yet the problem was not solved. I then removed the p-trap and cleaned it out and also stuck a flexible brush through the beginning of the drain through to where the p-trap begins and clean out that gunk. Still no help. Then my last item to try was a plunger. I loaded the sink half way with water. I then took that toilet plunger and plunged away. FINALLY, the clog was completely gone and the sink drains super rapidly.
Yes the second fix was the issue. My sons comb their hair and shave over the sink and let it go down the drain. I asked them to wipe the sink with paper towel and throw it in the garbage but they said that’s not what guys do? I have no idea so I just roll with what they tell me. TY
