It was a little flimsier than I expected. I had to add a 2x2 piece of wood to the bottom on the rear side in order to stabilize it better ua-cam.com/users/postUgkxXTh-lz-8W6GcB219vTLp27-MxbZYObBX . It is also starting to bow a little at the outer wall ( I've had it up for about 6 months), I've already had a shelf tumble down because of the bow and the fact that the little shelf brackets are quite short. I went out to home depot and got some longer ones so that the shelves don't tumble down again. Overall, it looks very nice for the price and it holds a lot ( I use it as a pantry). I am very satisfied with my purchase. I just strongly suggest reinforcing it before putting it up.
Thank you. Made a blackout flag, your descriptions worked really well. I also used your technique on stained oak with the matte and high gloss. Looks great and fits in with the furniture, keeping my wife reasonably happy. Thanks for the motivation and know how.
Any time! Glad I could help in my own small way. Be careful with oak, it’s open pour so some issues can arise that I didn’t mention in my videos. More intense sealer is usually required for things like oak.
Great video and appreciate the level of detail and the why’s behind some of your decisions.
Thanks for the details and reasoning why in your process of working. It’s definitely helpful.
Any time! Glad I can help
Very awesome!!! I love the blackout look!!!
I mainly watched this for the black out flag staining tips, but everything else was helpful as well. When I get this far, I will come back to this video to make a gun cabinet.
Glad it helped!
You should consider installing the hinge inside the case so that it doesn’t draw more attention. Even if it’s mounted high. Great video though
Awesome. I need to give it a try to make one.
Do it! Lemme know how it turns out!
Looking fresh DBG!
Hahaha thanks!
Love the blackout flag. Nice job!
When you can't find black hinges, take the silver ones and sand blast them and dip them in OxphoBlue. It gives the metal a black oxide finish. And dyes really fast.
Thanks! I need to get a sandblaster haha
Just found your channel. Love your content. Sharing it with all my friends and coworkers
Thanks! i appreciate that!
Magnificent my friend. Great work!
Thanks!!!!
I liked your first video. Your approach in general is fantastic, You watching your video and narrating is great, most of these people will fumble along trying to explain what they are doing while trying to concentrate on what they are doing. Keep the videos coming. Semper Fi
Thanks man, on a hiatus but I’ll be back sooner or later
@@Workshop1776 . What software are you using for the laser? And how are you converting the file to match up, this could be your next video...
I've made reg Flags 37" by 19 1/2.. Took the scrap wood from Furring strips and made a few mini flags..
I'm about to head back to my shop and do the stars..The stars on the mini take no time at all..I Have been wanting to make a concealed Gun Cabinet Medium size..
What convinced me was seeing the French Cleat..So, i'm glad i watched your video it's definitely worth a LIKE & a Share..
Thanks for this Vid and the links...OH yeah I just subbed you as well..Take Care i will be catching up on your channel..
Thanks! And keep up the good work!!!
Awesome job man. I'm ordering one now. One strut was mounted backwards. 😁
BOOM! shirt coming your way my friend! (assuming you want it lol) email me at workshop1776@gmail.com so I can get your size and shipping info! and if you wanna order a case
Great video! Ready to get started on my own!
I thought your flag was charred. I think I'm gonna charr mine and lightly sand my "white" stripes. I'm gonna use PD Blue for my star background.
Thanks for sharing your projects and ideas with us!
That’s awesome! I have some other videos that have the char on there if you are interested
Took me a while to find the mistake on the hinges but they're both facing the opposite direction lol sick job bro keep it up!
Thanks! you are actually second to find the mistake but it was by seconds, so email me at Workshop1776@gmail.com and we will get you a shirt as well (assuming you want one haha)
You got one Shock upside down. Lol 😂. Beautiful 🇺🇸
hahaha yuuuup
Great video , extremely informative thank you
Love the blackout. Would love to buy just the stars square.
Thanks! they have stencils on amazon here ya go amzn.to/3ywm4bg
I guess I missed out on the shirt by a few months! lol. Great video bro. Really liked the way you detailed all the steps in this. New subscriber. I've built flags but was looking for a good way to build a concealment box. Very straight forward and informative! Thank you!
Hahaha ya lil late on the shirt! Thanks for the kind words, let me know if you end up making one!
Great job!
Thanks1
Looks Great.
Thank you.
@@Workshop1776 anytime brother.
I like the look of the box, but I would make one change: On the hinges, I would route a chamfer edge for the hinge and just enough of a pocket so that the panel sets tight to the box. Have the hinge mounted with the holes inside the hinge so that they aren't visible with the lid closed. This will make the box much more secure.
Ya I didn’t want to go quite that far
I found that installing the lock without the back of the case makes it so much easier. You can visually line things up
Ya I have thought about that but never end up doing it that way haha
@@Workshop1776 haha try it next time, it will def save you time
Agreed! 1000% easier without the back on!
Awesome…. Thank you
hope it helped!
one strut was up side down lol awesome box
True, and thanks!
Good job... Brothers....
Thanks!
I thought I was the only one that wrote the color codes on the edge of the flag. Beautiful flag!
Thanks!!! Writing on the side helps so much!
Looks awesome man! I've built a few of these myself, I'm all to familiar with the strut funny business..
Thanks! Ya you barely even notice it at the time
Looks awesome brother, I’m going to use your design for a case for my Son. New sub here for sure, also the struts were going different directions to answer your one challenge question :)
Thanks! and yup i messed up the struts, doesnt interfere with the case tho haha
Case is awesome and love the blackout flag! Very good mead! You should checkout Guggman Haus in Indy! Constantly changing tap list!
Thanks! and I will!
Hinges are exposed so you can unscrew it without unlocking the box, love the video
Ya that’s by design, if the batteries die people will still need a way in with having to destroy the thing
Man this guy is killing it! lol
I’m too kind 🙃
🤣
Wood-drum Wilson? Donald Drum-p? Sandin van Buren? Board Washington?
Maybe a trick to put the RFID lock on easier would be if you unscrew the back panel after you finished all the hardware hinge and struts. That way you can see the whole lock and latch and line up how you want them
ya I think of that every time I get to that point, but I'm too lazy to do it hahaha
I’d love to see a quick video on the flag jig.
that's going to be the next video, just on a hiatus for a bit to be with my family while my kids still like me
Watched a couple vids.
You earned the sub.
Thanks! we should be back soon, had to take a hiatus
Hey sir. Thanks for the video do you think the piano hinges for a bigger box like your other video would be better then the cabinet hinges that you used for your bigger box? Just trying to decide. Thanks sir.
Good stuff! Ever thing about burning the wood before applying the black?
Looks great. I'll be sure not to put my hinges on in opposite directions. Lol 😆
hahaha it adds character!
Nice work. Could you move the hinge to the inside? Give it a cleaner look. Very cool overall!
Definitely could, I just didn’t want to haha
please make more
Make them 15.5 in. Wide so they can recess into the wall between the studs. Oversized faceplate/flag to cover
This was a custom order, they guy wanted this specifically
Thanks for great idea, just made it today, where did you get key swub
amazon, linked in the description.
Blackout flag looks awesome. I've built 5 or 6 cases myself (large and small), and found it easier to put the backing on last. That way it's much easier to mount the struts and RFID lock. Is there any reason you don't?
no, that is a good way to do it, ive always just put the back on after making the box
Awesome video, very informative and funny. I've subscribed and might give that build a try. Loved the jig too!
Was the strut mistake the fact that one was reversed? Happy New Year.
Thanks! the strut was reversed yes haha
Great video I want to build one in the worst way but I'm a plumber not a carpenter lol but would it be easier to put lock on before you put back on ?? Like from the inside
Great video and I love how you put the things used in the description.
When you said you put three coats of ink, are you referring to just the red stripes?
Yes and yes
Only thing is that these are pretty popular now and if someone realizes there is a hinge, it probably has something in it, and pulling it off the wall would be super simple and walk out with thousands in firearms.
Ya, its not a safe. it more like a somewhat secure display.
You placed the gas strouts one, one direction and the other then proper direction.
Yuuuup sure did
Great case brother but I must say you missed a prime moment to use a KBAR to cut that foam. Good stuff dude
Is there a difference between the polyurethane foam and kaizen foam? I've used the kaizen everytime, and it's a lot less expensive.
i havnt heard of kaizen foam, ill check it out
Were the struts mounted backwards? Just wanted to make sure I get it right. I love your videos. Really good content!
Yup! I wasn’t paying attention and mounted one backwards, which one I dunno 🤷🏻♂️. And thanks for the kind words, more videos will be coming in the not too distant future
perfect video, how much do you get for one?
Did you think about mounting the hinge on the inside?
Yes, I have seen them that way before, in this application it doesn't really matter, either way you aren't going to see them. That is a good idea though.
any thoughts building one into a table beside your couches and bed or taking a spare kitchen cabinet and building it for multuple firearms
I haven’t but that’s an awesome idea
@@Workshop1776 thanks
Love the video man, any other recommendations for hinges and hanging plate? I'll be making a bigger size of this, and just want to make sure it is safe on the wall. Also,, when are you coming back? Would love to subscribe to your site!
So all the items are linked in the description below, the french cleat I used will hold quite a bit of weight. Im not sure when im coming back, trying to spend some time with my kids, but thanks for the kind words!
You mounted the struts one upside down too the other one.
Yup!
great vid, you could probably have used two smaller black hinges if there wasn't a 32 incher.
Thanks! Ya I thought about that option but the hinge is hidden and the longer ones provide a smoother opening, maybe, I dunno lol
@@Workshop1776 yeah makes sense about the alignment. Check out some of my work on Instagram @roughcuttoriginals God bless
Where did you purchase those clamps for the jig?! Never seen any with feet to drill to a work bench.
The blue ones? They are from Rockler (nationwide I believe) they are also linked in the description.
Amazing job! I love the flag. What is the dimension of the actual box? How deep is it? Also, I see you use a piano hinge do you recommend using a the standard cabinet hinges instead?
Thanks! the piano hinge is easier to mount and works really well so thats why i went with that, the dimensions of the box are 1/4" shorter on all sides than the flag itself, and its 3" deep
@@Workshop1776 thank you! Can’t wait to try making mine 😊
@@sandybear5720 let me know how it turns out!
Any ideas how to make the stars without a laser engraver?
How deep did you make the box?
👍🇺🇸👍
Nice job
Thanks 👍
Are the struts supposed to be opposite directions? I've never used them for anything so that is probably a stupid question but was just curious why yours were not mounted the same on both sides. Hope that makes sense. The box is awesome though!!
Nope! I just messed up hahaha they are supposed to be the same
Only thing I would change is making it an inside hinge so it isn’t visible
ya, since it's on the top it doesnt bother me
Where did you get the viking horn cup? Can't find it online.
I got that on a layover on my way to deployment
what lazer did u use and what program?
I need printable instructions
I’d like a case like this to hold two AR15’s with scopes. Do you build and ship?
Are you still selling this? Not really sure where to find your stuff. Great job btw
The gas tubes were opposite!
what if u lose the card (rdif) reader. how do you get in?
Ruffaboard B Hays, Woodgo Wilson, and Calvin Cooledge for your sander name.
Hahaha those are awesome!
Where did you get the sweet tusk cup?
Germany
is there not a better locking option? the one you use takes up alot of space...it seems like anyway
This is all I’ve found, but I’m sure there are tons out there
Great vids Bro. Can you make that flag jig video you mentioned? Shitty woodworker needs help
Thanks! ium working on it, been off of here for a minute, may be getting back into it soon
My boyfriend would love this
I bet he would! tell him to give it a try! they are really easy!
@@Workshop1776 I'd have to be the one to do the building lol but I'd be down to maybe order him one already built
@@laurasalas1940 gotcha! Well if you do want to order one you can email me at workshop1776@gmail.com and we can iron out details
@@Workshop1776 awesome, will do. Thank you😊
Probably way too late... but how about "Let's go Sandon"
haha love it, but it got a name already
Struts are mounted opposite of each other
Yuuuuuuup
Where did you get the mead horn at?
From Ze Germans…Ramstien Air Force base :)
MAKE THE JIG!
Will do! should be pretty short video hahaha
Why not cabinet door hinges? It would be more hidden right? Might not need shocks...
I’ve used those before, they are harder to mount and still require the gas strut supports to open it “automatically” also makes the placement of the “door” more difficult
Beautiful but to obvious that something is inside. I recently sold all my woodworking equipment. Very sad. I would of loved to of made some lifts for guns.
ONE HINGE IS UPSIDE DOWN
What branch of service did you serve in?
How does the enamel hold up during the glue clean up?
pretty good! as long as you don't go crazy with the glue, and use a wet paper towel (or whatever method you prefer) while the glue is still wet.
Usually what I do, I got some India ink and enamel I'm almost done building your same case. It's the first mini case I've done.
nice!
Your struts are reversed? One is facing on way and the other the opposite direction? Was this on purpose? Thank you for this video .
wasnt on purpose, just made a mistake haha. pretty standard really.
What are the sizes of the shocks you used?
There is an Amazon link for all of the stuff I used in the description
I actually prefer the plywood unions, any specific reason you stopped using them?
They are great for because of how flat they are, but they have a tendency to bubble up and separate when you put them in the laser, for a CNC they are perfect
@@Workshop1776 ah yes ok I still paint my stars so I haven't had that issue
@@nymets1104 for that application plywood is perfect 👌🏻
Can I get the cut plans for this ?
Unfortunately not at this moment, but when I return to woodworking I’ll setup my website again and it will have all the plans and cut lists on there
Right in the beginning of the video I noticed the struts had one upsidedown. Good build though
Yuuuup and thanks!
How did you get that big of a difference between stripe? I am currently building one and can’t get that big of a distinction
are you using the india ink?
@@Workshop1776 I used the India ink but couldn’t get a huge difference between the stripes with one coat and the stripes with two coats.
gotcha, are you using the rustoleum crystal clear enamel on what would be the red stripes? thats where most of the difference comes from
@@Workshop1776 I think that’s the problem, I used a semi gloss. I did get a pretty good outcome. Thanks for your info
@@justincourtney7705 for sure hope that helps
How can I get it open if my card stopped working?
I love the flag, do you have a website where i can view or get order information?
Thanks! I used to have a website and store and everything but it’s all shut down so I can spend time with my family. I’ll be up and running again sooner or later tho!
@@Workshop1776 thank you so much for replying, thats a great reason to take time off enjoy your time with your family and i hope i see it when your back.
Do you sell these? Well done brother!
I used to, but the shop is shut down for the summer, may pick it back up again in the fall
I see you put the gas strut on backwards lol.nice mistake but not a bad one
Haha yup! still works fine tho
Cool I like anyone who builds things, tho I would have made it so that the full flag had equal outer lip all around instead of just the bottom side so it looks like a frame flag art and not like an actual box to look like its hiding something in it and make it look more like just and art piece.
You can totally do that! Just make the flag slightly larger
Are you planning on making more videos?
