Thank you! I love this tutorial! I am a beginner and for the most part Im getting it but on my second row of front post back post you started with a back post but mine started on a front post. I am curious to know how to fix this without starting all over. I hope this makes sense.
Then work a front post, no problem 👍🏼 . Stick with whatever stitch you need (even if it is different than mine). I wouldn’t normally recommend that, but with this pattern it’s a bit different as you set up the foundation then work the rest of the pattern based on that. So go with what you have.

Hi, I am so excited to try this hat. I actually started but wanted to check in first to see if doing the foundation double crochet will work just the same as long as I do the recommended amount of chains (for me the 22" for large adult). When you change to the color purple in the video it appears you do not fasten off the beige color. The video doesn’t show how to pick the beige color back up. Depends on how far apart you want your beige stripes. I’m lazy when it comes to weaving in ends, and will try to avoid it whenever possible.
That said, if my stripes are close together, I don’t cut any yarn. I just drop color 1, pick up color 2 and work. Then when I am ready for the next color, I just drop and pick up. This way, I only have to weave in a few ends.

I just made my first 2 hats prior to watching this tutorial, using double crouchet. And single crochet around the edge. I have also made granny square quilts in the past. I am anxious to try this mew stitch. Please mention again what size yarn and hook you were using. Thank you! I will post again after i have completed a sample. (Maybe, if i do it right). You can use any yarn you want, and any hook size that suits the yarn size you choose. I used a yarn called “Woolike”, it’s by Loops and Threads and it’s available at Michaels. It’s a size 1 fingering yarn, and I use two skeins simultaneously. For that size, I use a G hook.

Did you make a matching men's scarf using this same stitch and brim. If not can you give advice on how to make the scarf with the same brim at each end?

If you want the brim stitch with the brim on each end, then just crochet a row of DC in the width you want your scarf to be. Then begin crocheting the extended alternating crochets (the front post and back post double crochets just like we did for the brim). Once you made that section the length you want, then begin to crochet the body of the scarf. At the end, go back to crocheting the extended stitches for the brim.

Yes, and yes. Keep in mind that a 4 will make the hat bigger, so pay attention to your measurements as you work.

You can use any yarn you want. If you use a 3, You can use a G or an H hook. I’d use an H hook for a medium 4 yarn, though.

Yup, exactly! That’s why I used measurements instead of number of chains and rows. 😉 So just make sure you initial chain is long enough to cover the circumference of your head. Once you start the stitching, make sure you make the hat tall enough to fit you.
When I make hats for myself, I use a 22 inch chain, then crochet 9-10 inches for the hat height (so I have a slouchy beanie where I can tuck my hair comfortably into). Then I make a 1.5 to 2 inch brim. So it’s about 11 inches tall when it’s all said and done.
I recently made this hat. I like it, but my stitches aren't as compact as yours. I have small spaces between my stitches. I used 2 strands of the same yard as you. Did you wash or block yours first? Any suggestions?? Thanks!
Hi Cheryl! There will be spacing between the stitches, but there are a couple of ways to minimize it. You can try loosening up the tension of the stitch, or you can try using a different size hook.
After making a few of these hats using the Woolike yarn, I’ve found that a combination of both methods usually yields better result. I’d try making a swatch with different hooks. Make a few rows with a loose tension, then tighten it up for a few rows and compare the two.
But to answer your question, no, I neither washed nor blocked. The hat will fluff a little after washing it, but I didn’t wash it before filming or photographing.
I have a question, I'm making this hat as an adult slouchy hat,I'm putting in the 2 stripes and then the brim. So are you saying do it for 9 inches then do the 1-2 inch brim or 9 inches total including the brim. Thank you in advance.
To make a slouchy hat, you’ll need to crochet a longer hat length, so about 15 inches total. So 12-13, plus 1-2 inch brim.

So I made one from this pattern and love it! But I'm making another and it keeps shrinking? Like the starting chain was slightly more than 21 inches and now like 4 rows in its only at 20 inches? It looks even I just don't know why it's shrinking? I'm trying to make it for a person with a large head so do you have any tips on keeping it at the right length?
If your stitch count is the same, then it could be a tension issue. I tend to tighten as I crochet, but I don’t know if you have the same issue.
You can always add an inch to your initial chain, then you’d be at 21 after the shrink. I’ve done that a few times and it’s helped.

I’d start with a 5 mm and make a small sample. If you like the way it looks, then stick with that sizes. If not, try a larger hook until you find the one you like best. Some yarns, even though they are a 4, can be thicker (like Red Heart super saver yarn), than most other 4 yarns. That’s why I suggest making a small swatch using the yarn you intend to use for your hat.

Hi Mode Bespoke! I was so excited to start this project... I measured out my first chain for 21” and 3 rows in I was super proud of myself...until I noticed my piece getting longer and longer. How did I end up with 26”?! Making a hat for an ogre! What is happening? Halllp!! 🤣☠️
😂 but I bet Shrek would love the hat! The stitch was just wider than the chain, and that’s ok. So, your initial chain was 21”, then you ended up with 26” after a few rows, correct? Math it up and let’s adjust your initial chain.
So take 26-21 then divide the answer by 21. That’s an increase of .238, or about 23.8%.
Now, reduce the 21” chain by 23.8%. So take 21 and divide it by 1.238 (or 1 + .238), to determine how long your chain will need to be so that it is 23.8% shorter than 21”. You’ll get 16.96 (if my math is correct). So your initial chain will need to be about 17 inches so that when you start your double crochet, it will grow to 21 inches (instead of 26)

I am hoping you can help - I really love the look of the hat and want so badly to make it. I have started it 3 times with a chain of 22” but each time, by the time I get to the first row of front and back posts, it measures 26”. I keep rewatching the video and cannot figure out what I keep doing. Any thoughts?
Try counting your stitches every few rows. You may be inadvertently adding a stitch at some point in the row.
Thanks for your quick reply. I started again and counted my stitches. Second row was fine but by the 3rd row(first row of the front post/back post stitch, even though my stitch count was the same, it measured 3” longer than before. I’m fairly new to this and have trouble with my tension so could that be the issue? It still seems like it’s pretty extreme and almost comical (but frustrating) that it keeps happening.
Ah, ok, I see now.
You can try a few things:
1. Use a larger hook to make your chain. So try a hook that is 1 mm larger. (Make a small sample, maybe around 20 stitches and test it out)
2. Decrease your initial chain by 3” (or however much wider your fabric is after a few rows.)
This stitch tends to be just a little bit wider than the initial chain, add the difference in tension and you can end up with a big difference in fabric width.
Can i use milk.cotton 5 ply..
You can, but it might not be as stretchy as a synthetic fiber yarn.

Started about 4 times now and mine don't look anything like the one you made.. Not sure what I am doing wrong, love the stitch but just can't get it to look like yours.. Especially since your using two strands of yarn it just looks so small of a stitch on yours..

scherry Orr, the way she used those two (#1) colors together gives the stitch a pretty cool ‘moss’ effect that can’t be achieved with solids. Solid colors result in a ‘ribbed’ effect that is nice in its own right, but def looks different. The important thing here is that you achieve the measurements needed for a nice fit, I think you can get something very similar to hers using a #3 yarn in a ‘mixed’ color BUT not variegated or striped, and a ‘G’ (4.0mm) hook. I would personally use a #4 yarn with a 5mm hook, it works faster and the results are chunkier.
I agree with Lorena, the important thing are the measurements. You can use a different yarn, and it may look a little different, but you’ll still end up with an a beautiful handmade item :)

Why does it look like it has small gaps when you are crocheting it? Are these small gap’s visible when you wear the beanie?
Also is it ok if I only crochet the horizontal rows ? I mean that is it ok if I don’t do the last part(the vertical rows) or will it not fit?

That’s the spacing between the stitches. Visibility depends on the yarn and hook combo you use.
The brim? (Are those the vertical rows?) that’s just decorative. You can omit that.
Yup, you can adjust your hook size to whatever you prefer. Swatch it out and see if you like the look before committing to the whole project.
But if I omit the brim will it still fit?
Yes.
My husband wants a hat with ear flaps, how would you do that?
Make the hat without a brim, then measure out where you want the flaps. Work as rows, decreasing on the first and last stitches of every-other row until you make the flap the length you want. Instead of a decrease, you can also just skip the first and last stitch. Add a narrow brim at the end to give it a nice finish.

I'm just curious, what makes this a men's beanie? Are they made differently than the women's or is it just the color?
The colors help, sure, but it’s really the simplicity of stitch. Since I created the pattern for Xmas gifts for my brothers, I figured I’d just call it a men’s beanie. Really though, it’s more of just a simple, but attractive beanie that men or women can use. I’m just not creative to when it comes to naming things. 🤷🏻♀️

Great instructions but the "rim" doesn't work imo bc its not a true rib pattern. I made one with a 21 inch foundation chain and a "G' hook with #3 yarn bc what you used wasn't available. (discontinued by manufacturer). . I should have known better having made many beanies but never from a square so it was hard to judge how tight it would be after sewn. I will probably use this pattern again, however I will do a traditional rib at the end. This looks like a rib but has not "stretch" as other beanies have, It fits very loosely on the edges.
I also don't like the seam thats visible when you sew it together.
I would sew the body of the hat, and do the ribbed rim around it after that bc its very hard to know the fit unless you do the first one which is almost like a practice (but took me all day!)
Very good instruction though.
I also think this rim may have worked better if there were some decreases in it.
This hat also has no give and I suspect will stretch out due to the nature of the pattern.
Thank you for the info! You can totally sub any brim pattern you want. I’ve been using the a Tunisian crochet one, I’ve found it works and looks better.
For a better fit, you can try it on as you work. Work about 4-5 rows and try it on, adjust as needed.
You can also crochet this in the round. As this is a pattern for new crocheters, I didn’t make it in the round as it took me a while to get the hang of it when I first started. But as you are experienced, you can totally do it. 😊

That’s unfortunate, I like that yarn. Yeah, the ice blue one is $1.97. Out of the three Michael’s in my area only two carry this yarn. What do ya do? 🤷🏻♀️

I recently posted one about making stretchy Tunisian fabric, so if you do try out the Tunisian one, use the extended return pass from the video in the bottom link to make the brim (instead of a regular return pass) . I’ll film a new tutorial that combines both techniques, but it’ll be a few weeks before I can film it.

@@ModeBespoke OK thanks. What I have done with this hat is use a smaller hook for the brim.. It is working that way. I am also using a size 3 yarn with the "g" hook. I have also used chunky yarn for this pattern and gone down several hooks . I like the fact that it makes it fit better and doesn't distract from the main design. It looks good with the chunky yarn. I just sealed a bag with the two chunky hats
