My daughter asked me for help learning to crochet hats as gifts for Christmas. Im so pleased to find your channel. The tutorial makes it so easy. You are a good teacher.
Thank you so much for this pattern! I have been searching for a decent men's hat pattern for some time and it seems like I've found it at last! 👏🏻👏🏻. Blessed with fussy men in my family from husband down through sons and grandsons, I all but gave up knitting or crocheting hats for them- until now .... stand back and be amazed boys, you are about to be anointed with all those beautiful skeins of manly colours of yarns collected up over the years 🤗
I'm using worsted weight cotton yarn with H/8 5.00mm hook, and it is coming out great. Just count your stitches. I noticed when using the loop at the top, there is a slight twist while working that creates an illusion of an uneven bottom. I did it by eye at first and tried to even out the bottom every row, which ended up with 10 more stitches because I didn't count my stitches. Lol. After following instructions and counting this time, it came out great! Using this pattern more often. Thank you.
Thank you so much for this tutorial! My boyfriend is a skater with a very big head, which makes looking for beanies extremely hard! This video showed me that even with my limited crochet skills I can still make people happy with handmade gifts!

Thank you SOOOO MUCH for making this pattern free & even including a video tutorial!!! Dream come true! I’ve been looking for this style of crochet beanie for a long time & hard to find a free pattern I like. I wear lots of beanies and only been crocheting seriously for 2 months so this makes things much easier for me (dabbled for awhile though). I even get to use my favorite Furls hook to work it up! Can’t wait to finish it! I’ll probably end up making several 🥳🤩😱
Hi Sweet Sarah🤗 I'm going to start on making these for all the men in the family❣️ LOVE the construction of this hat!!! Brilliant job sweetie 👍👏Thank You & have a great weekend Much love💕☮️
SOOO glad I found you, Sarah! I love this pattern. It will be so easy for my crochet group of ladies to make for our "Warming Tree" this winter. Thank you for the free patterns.
the absolute BEST pattern, tutorial and technique. impressive. you're a GENIUS! thanks for a fantastic video. this will be my go-to, as I wear hats nightly (and am always in need of hats which go out of season most of the year).
I really liked this pattern, but I got SO confused with the measurements and the crochet hook size. I just HAD to do some in-depth research on this. I hope this helps clarify some others who feels the same way as I did, without having to search through all of the useful comments below. Like how many others pointed out in the comments, the end-result length becoming EXTREMELY long, with her in the video mentioning "6mm crochet hook", having 56 chains (or 66 chains to fold the end; the word "brim", to me, is a visor-like part, so I won't use that word) -- all did not quite make sense to me. She also mentions the beanie to have approximately 21-inches circumference, which means the width of the beanie we see there is like 10.5 inches, which looks slightly shorter than the length (from top to rim), which looks kind of like 11.5-12 inches.. I searched for that specific yarn she used. It's a number 4 medium worsted yarn of "knitting Gauge: 20 sts in Stockinette Stitch = 4 inches (10 cm) with a 4.5 mm (U.S. 7) knitting needle". In the video she says she used a 6mm-crochet hook. However, there was no way her gauge will look like that with a 6mm crochet hook. Thus, I believe she misspoke having used a U.S.G-6(4mm; Boye brand 4.25mm). And then she googled 6mm crochet hook, and it (of course) gave her the J-10 for the U.S. size, so she just wrote that in the description.. But if it were actually a U.S.G-6 crochet hook, 56-66sts will make around 11-13 inches, which then sounds right for a length of a beanie. I just hoped she corrected it in the video description later, when there are so many comments mentioning about that.. Also, I think it would have been more clear if she measured both the width and length of the finalized beanie. And I didn't really understand why she mentioned "to stop crocheting once it reaches about 18 inches", when in the beginning she mentioned the circumference to be around 21 inches.. I started using a #5 bulky Premier Puzzle yarn (Gauge: 15sx20r = 4in/10cm on size US10/6mm knitting needles-- just because I had that yarn, it was actually a yarn for a 6mm hook, and it is machine wash/dry-able. I tried crocheting with a 5.75mm hook, wanting a more tightly crocheted feel. But then it didn't feel right anyway, I got all frustrated with the measurements, so I stopped after having crocheted for like 5 inches (I have already adjusted the vertical length to be around 9.5 inches) and undid the whole crocheted fabric. I decided to calculate and measure how long that beanie in the video may actually be, got the better measurements, and started writing this comment..! So, eventually I am using a 5.75mm crochet hook for the Premier Puzzle (#5 bulky) yarn, made the loop with 12 chains (hoping the length of the loop shouldn't be too different..), made 39 chains and a 2-chain-post in the beginning that makes a 12inch-long chain to start with (I wanted the beanie to have fold). I am now way more optimistic that it will make a good beanie. Anyway, thanks for sharing this video -- although it gave me a massive headache for the past 3 days. LOL
Thank you so much for your research and explanation. I’ve just ripped my chain out for the third time !!! 66 was reaching my neck! 😂 So I’m using #3 premier yarn, coffee shop! With a 4 mm hook let’s see if it works, if not I’m moving on!!!
Thank you for the research, because I got frustrated and took my hat apart. It just didn't feel right. I was using 100% worsted wool. I may try again, but I would love to see how your beanie came out.
@@xlena60 I actually ended up with a very cool looking beanie with a 2-inch fold. It felt a bit crowded when I was trying to sew the top part together, but so much better than without that ring on the top. It comfortably covers (snug and fit but not tight) from the forehead-ear(measurement was done by passing the earhole, and the beanie covers the whole ear until the earlobe)-backneck (1inch below where skull ends) which had a circumference measurement of 25.5 inches. (I have intended it to be worn like that). FYI the circumference measurement of the head normally done for hats and caps (from forehead to the most convex part of the back of head) was 22 inches. Hope this helps!
Just finished making one for my boyfriend as a christmas gift. Thank you so much for the pattern and your instructions 😊❤️. I really enjoyed making it 😁🙏🏼.
Hello I know this is kind of late but do you perhaps have any pictures wearing the hat? I'm having trouble knowing if this was the type of hat my friend wanted and I'm gonna make it for him too 😅
Can't wait to give this a try. My local crochet club has a request for a large bag full of Men's winter hats. This will be perfect . Thank You for such a great design.
I LOVE THIS BEANIE! Thank you for the most simple and effective method, tutorial yet! I’ve been looking all over for a pattern that is well explained for making adjustments to size as I am making this beanie for myself and have a smaller sized “bean” to cover! lol.
Thanks, thanks, thanks! Clear, easy to follow and lovely at the end. Making a beanie for my brand new son-in-law out in Denver, CO (currently getting snow!!).
LOVE this. I've been making hats similar to this in slip stitch (knit stitch) only but i love the look of adding the SC row. Thank you for sharing this tutorial. I love making hats!
I need glasses but medicare won't buy me any. I have diabetes and over the last 30 years it has done some damage in my eyes. SOOO to those complaining about not being able to see the certain stitches....goodness. For me the darkness of the yarn is very hard to see and the fuzzy yarn?? Yes let's talk about that beautiful yarn... The blur I have is compounded...lol . O k.. I know my stitches but I continue to have trouble. BUT... I love these videos, I love the textures, it's the way the material looks and effects me as to whether I'm going to make the product or not. I can't even get these yarns but I love watching them being worked with. Wish I could get my grey yarn balls out and my expensive hook ready. Get me a mug of my favorite Starbucks. Spark a fatty, and start my tutorial. So that when the video is finished, as I'm finishing my 5th row, I start the video again and take a hit and a sip, and get after it again. Now that's my dream day! I can't do it because first I can't afford pot. I can't afford beautiful yarn. But I can afford to watch beautiful tutorials from my favorite artists. Living my best life... For what ever is left of it. My Mother, Brother, Dad are gone. Don't know my time left. But it's going to be peaceful and calm.....
I really like this pattern. I've been looking for simple beanie patterns that I can use as a stash buster with the intent of donating the hats to a local emergency shelter for the houseless. They request winter hats every fall. I'm going to do this one, but instead of the ch12 at the beginning, I'm going to use the magic circle method demonstrated in later videos. I think that will make the top easier to close. Thanks for the pattern!😇
I was just searching to see if anyone had tried this!!! I attempted this with Weight 4 yarn and a 3mm hook and quickly ran out of room in the 12 chain circle! Trying again with the magic circle today!
I tried following different videos for a beanie and they confused the life out of me. You honestly did a really good job explaining each step which made it super easy to follow! All that’s left is to get on making one in the morning
I'm making these for men cancer patients. The oncology treatment clinic near by gets a lot of donations, most of which are for the women in treatment. Sometimes the guys get overlooked. I'm in a crochet group and we are taking care of the guys this time. Your pattern is perfect.
Thank goodness I read the comments. Thanks Jessie! I love the look of the hat but mine was getting too long as well with a 6 mm hook. However my major issue is working anything with black wool ( my hubby’s choice of colour) and so many rows of slip stitches. I admit I gave up. It is a great pattern, just not for me. If you give it a go, check Jessie’s comment down here for the correct hook and gauge and DON’T use black!
Thank you so much for publishing this pattern and the video. This is a great structure, very different than the usual circle ones and quite knit like. I used a Tunisian crochet that makes it easier to crochet into the slip stitches that can be hard to grab sometimes. I didn't find the same yarn so for me it was more 35 stitches than 55 for the size with hook 6mm
I definitely understand. I had to adjust my starting chain several time. I had to reduce to 57 stitches instead of 66 stitches. This is the tricky part when using different yarns.
Thank you for this pattern. I've never seen a hat crocheted like this !! Going to make these for the guys on my Christmas List (that will be 10 of these). Looks easy enough that I think I can do it. Thank you again, you have a new subscriber.
I Had to quit at row 4 when I struggled to get my size 10/J hook into the slip stitch for a single crochet using my "lightweight yarn". I appreciate Jessie's suggestions and the pattern looks beautiful. I may attempt this at a later date, but my head is telling me to quit for now.
I have a super hard time with slip stitches and try to avoid patterns that use it. But I’m gonna try this. I think the key is to make the slip stitch loosely
11/10/2024. Am working up a practice beanie and I’m so glad I found this tutorial. However… could you please suggest another yarn as Rapture by Sugar Bush Yarns is no longer available. Your help will be appreciated.

Thank you so much for posting this technique! I would never seen one like it before, but will definitely be giving it a try this week. Glad to come across your video.
This is great! I do have a pattern like this I made for my self a long time ago. It definitely looks like knitted, which is great. We don't have access to wool yarns here from where I am but super soft baby worsted yarn works great too.
Trust me, if she says 66, do 66. I thought the same and did like 30 then really miscalculated it as the other stitches actually tightened it togethor lol it was sooo short. So do as she says 😂
After three weeks of on-again, off-again crocheting, this hat is complete. Even though it is complete, it is not the way I wanted it to look like at all. I tried to get the same style as shown here and I have failed. I am going to try again, and this time I try to cut the flip of the hat off and try with multi-color yarn.
Please use a lighter coloured yarn for your tutorials. It’s very difficult to see/understand for a beginner where the back loop of the slip stich rows that you should be going in to actually are...
I realize this comment is directed towards one from a year ago ... but perhaps others will see it: To JessicaHolzhuter; This is not a "Beginners" how to crochet video. They do make those... this one isn't one of those, sounds like you need to watch A Beginners "how to crochet" Video and learn all the stitches first.
No need to get so defensive. It was simply a suggestion to improve upon future tutorials. I also never said I was personally having issues. It was just some constructive criticism. Typically people who watch video tutorials vs written patterns are less experiences crocheters. Your responses are less than helpful or kind.
@@RichTexturesCrochet hi, I bought this pattern from you yesterday on Etsy. I am trying to make this hat with the same hook (6mm) but my work seems to have different height.... Can you tell me what height should this beanie have without a brim? Mine has 32 cm
I did also initially. Make sure you are recognizing your stitch. V part of stitch toward left, curved part of stitch towards the right. Hope this makes sense to you!
How do you crochet the edges straight in this pattern? I've noticed that when I crochet this pattern my edges keep turning inward. I think its because we are only supposed to work in the backstitch but I honestly have no clue. I just want a beanie with straight edges ): I like this pattern but im so tired of restarting because of the damn edges
You can search this up on UA-cam like I did because i suck at explaining things. When you are done a row you add another loop and skip 1 or 2 holes. Just always make sure you double check if it’s straight :)
Rhonda Denis thank you, I keep trying to make sense of written instructions....I’ll keep trying but following a tutorial is easy 🤗 plus I get to see the final product
idk if i did something wrong, i used the same size hook and yarn as you did, but my hat was like almost like 1.5 feet long? even with the cuff it was still really big.
That is a good question, 55 chains like she suggested was way to long... 35 or 40 Chains would have been enough. Now it is to late to go back and fix it. What a waist of time and yarn. :( Love the pattern though, I will try again and start with 35 Chain and a smaller middle circle. 😀
The beginning loop technique is not one I've seen before. Nice touch; it gives the top a smooth look. Well done.

I am very impressed with your technique as well as with this tutorial. Thank you for sharing
You’re welcome :) thank you for watching!
I reallly enjoy this technique and the look it produces. I’m definitely going to try this out.
I tried following different videos for a beanie and they confused the life out of me. You honestly did a really good job explaining each step which made it super easy to follow! All that’s left is to get on making one in the morning
I’m so glad you found it helpful and easy to follow :)
I'm making these for men cancer patients. The oncology treatment clinic near by gets a lot of donations, most of which are for the women in treatment. Sometimes the guys get overlooked. I'm in a crochet group and we are taking care of the guys this time. Your pattern is perfect.
I think this is a super fun and easy to follow tutorial! Thank you very much!!
i watch so many tutorials an you are the best so far, thank you
You’re welcome, I’m glad you enjoy them!

Thanks for teaching crocheting a man hat. The crochet method is easy to follow.
I’m glad you like it and thank you for subscribing!
Works up beautifully....looks knitted but takes a tremendous amount of time to complete. Glad I made one but won't make another
I like it with the brim best. I really like the way you do the tutorials.
You’re so good at explaining everything, thank you so much!
I've only done scarves and blankets.
I will definitely try this. It seems foolproof
11/10/2024. Am working up a practice beanie and I’m so glad I found this tutorial. However… could you please suggest another yarn as Rapture by Sugar Bush Yarns is no longer available. Your help will be appreciated.
OMG 😍Im. excited to make this and send to my bf.. 😂Quarantine days gaves me so much idea for my LDR bf. 😁Thank you so much!!! 😍 i understand well the explanation 😁
I really like the top of the hat - very neat.

Was that a pun?
I've had a time trying to find a way to crochet a hat and hope this will do it for me. Thank you 🧶❤
You did a great job on this Tutorial. The instructions were very clear and you went at a pace crocheting the stitches that was very easy to follow along.
Thank you! I’m glad you enjoyed it :)
This is fantastic & you are such a good teacher thank you so much
I just made this and I am so proud of how it turned out! Thank you for this video, it was super easy to follow and clear
I’m so glad you enjoyed it!
Awesome tutorial. Can't decide whether to knit or crochet my brother a hat! Thank you!
I love the knitted look...but I cannot knit. Lol
I've never seen a hat Crocheted this way before. I love the look and it looks so easy! I definitely will be making a hat or two for my son. Thank you so much for sharing & you have a new subscriber! 😀
I've never seen a beanie made like this. Nice pattern and video. I look forward to making this. Thank you.
You’re welcome :)
This is a beautiful pattern to stitch. The hard part is when you're using a different yarn, and trying to determine the guage!!!
Im making this for Takashi. (Not my boyfriend.... Yet 😼)
Anyway i love him and he gets cold ears when he skates ♡︎
Wow after watching this, I’ve deciding I’m going to learn how to crochet. This is so cool!
Great decision! You'll love the crochet life...enjoy! 🌸💕
@@malikastone I just finished my first beanie last night on a circle loom! I did a knit three/purl two pattern and it turned out better than I expected. This version is next on my list. I’m hooked, thanks again for making this.
@@SamSlugg456 That's great Scott! I'm so excited for you. Its always lovely to see someone discover the awesomeness of crochet/knitting 💗
this is my favorite beanie pattern, ive made probably 5 of these beanies (some as gifts)
Just genious with a small loop on the top. So much easier.
I love this pattern, I only made 40 stitches in mine and it turned out great. The 60 stitches were way too long
I literally did what she told me to n now my hat looks like a giant sock. It’s a good thing you didn’t do friggin 65 like she says to do 😭
@@No_nAmE731 yep same here haha, started over 3 times or so.
Did you did the folded kind?
@@ReannaPeters12 folded? You mean did I make thr hat wide enough for a fold over? Yes
@@annettemiliken3555 yes thank you
Super detailed instructions! Im a beginner but super excited to see if I can do this. New sub!
Thank you so much for subscribing!
I 've used this tutorial for four man beanies! Thank you so much!
You’re welcome! And I’m so happy that you like the pattern!
Thank you so much for posting this technique! I would never seen one like it before, but will definitely be giving it a try this week. Glad to come across your video.
Dropping this project an hour into this,,, might comeback later another year
I love your works so much and the way you explain♥️♥️♥️♥️♥️♥️♥️♥️♥️♥️♥️
This is great! I do have a pattern like this I made for my self a long time ago. It definitely looks like knitted, which is great. We don't have access to wool yarns here from where I am but super soft baby worsted yarn works great too.
Unusual way of making the hat ..... and will try to make one. Thank you for sharing.
It is different! I like it though because of the minimal sewing and how it gathers at the top. Let me know what you think when finished :)
i have currently looked at five other yt videos, and with yoursi was succesful. thank you
How long (in inches) should the 66 chain be? Mine is so long wondering if I'm missing something here
Anna Samuelsen ditto girl!!!
Trust me, if she says 66, do 66. I thought the same and did like 30 then really miscalculated it as the other stitches actually tightened it togethor lol it was sooo short. So do as she says 😂
@@hannahmarshmallow6032 Haha good to know thank you! Now I can give this another try
Anna Samuelsen bro did it work out with the 66 stitches? I’m tying to do it rn and mine is long af but if it worked for u then I’ll keep going
@@megancampbell8821 i actually haven't gotten back to it yet so idk! if you do keep going and it works out let me know hahah
I'm making a beanie for my boyfriend this Christmas 😁
Same here!!
Me too Oml 😅
Sameeeeee
ahhh me too and all of my friends i’m gonna try to embroider or something their initials in them so we can all have matching ones
Me too
This pattern is brilliant! Thank you for sharing it.
You’re welcome :)
Love how the top is done very different to what i have seen before. Can i ask does a magic ring work at the very start also?
Very clear and concise tutorial. Thank you.
Thank you for your unique design. I am going to make one soon.
Thanks for the tutorial. You are amazing. Your work is always well done.
Thank you :)
Wow! I wouid never have thought of that!
Please use a lighter coloured yarn for your tutorials. It’s very difficult to see/understand for a beginner where the back loop of the slip stich rows that you should be going in to actually are...
Finding the back loop of a ss is realy easty tho. If you cant find that you should be practicing ur stiching not making things
Go to bag o day crochet she is ver good for beginners
Black is difficult to see when crocheting or knitting. Hard to see stitches, Personally I need to use a bright light when working with dark colors.
Great idea, gives it a knit look 😊 Could you do a magic ring at the top instead of 12 chains?
Possibly - it may depend on the pattern but you could certainly give it a try
I can't wait to try this pattern. It looks so simple. Thank You
You’re very welcome, I hope you enjoy it :)
@@RichTexturesCrochet hi, I bought this pattern from you yesterday on Etsy. I am trying to make this hat with the same hook (6mm) but my work seems to have different height.... Can you tell me what height should this beanie have without a brim? Mine has 32 cm
Is it normal for my work to slightly curve at the end? If not, do you know of any way to fix this without redoing my rows? Thanks!
yes it is normal
This is absolutely brilliant!!! Thank you for sharing!!
I'm having a hard time finding the back stitch after I've got about 3 rows it's hard to determine
Me too. I am confused at row 3
I did also initially. Make sure you are recognizing your stitch. V part of stitch toward left, curved part of stitch towards the right. Hope this makes sense to you!
Same! I am doing all she said and I'm looking for back row BUT it looks more like a spiral to me :(
I couldn’t figure it out for the life and me and undid all my work I was so frustrated.
At the last stitch instead of going into only the back loop go through both not only the back.
Such a good method! Thank you, because of this video I’ve made my first ever hat and I’m so excited!!!
Thank you I will crochet this hat for my son🥰🤗🤗
So glad I subscribed last night, I really like how you demonstrate cause I can’t read patterns 😂🤷♀️
Thank you so much for subscribing!
Patti Hayden funny thing, once you learn from watching videos. And you learn the abbreviation pattern will become much easier.
Rhonda Denis thank you, I keep trying to make sense of written instructions....I’ll keep trying but following a tutorial is easy 🤗 plus I get to see the final product
Great hat pattern looks very nice, thank you for sharing hope to give it a try ! Liz x
idk if i did something wrong, i used the same size hook and yarn as you did, but my hat was like almost like 1.5 feet long? even with the cuff it was still really big.
Same im trying to figure out how i can fix it
Absolutely brilliant!
If you measure the 66 chains, what is the length (in inches) supposed to be? Mine is 20" and I wonder if the hat will be too loose if it stretches?
7:11 change happens here that I was confused about when I read the pattern. Thank you for this tutorial.
Made one hat for my husband and now making one for my dad 😊
She has kitties. I saw a kitty hair on the beanie. Everything that leaves my house has at least one doggy hair on it.
Lol actually a dog! He’s a border collie and although he only has a good shed twice a year, his hair LOVES my yarn!
I too have a dog...I have 3 large lap dogs to be exact! Nd all my items will leave with a hair or two🤷🏻♀️
Love this! How would you add horizontal stripes in different colors?
Thanks for the pattern! Mine's a little long, I think it's because I used a thicker yarn. How long in inches do you recommend the chain being?
That is a good question, 55 chains like she suggested was way to long... 35 or 40 Chains would have been enough. Now it is to late to go back and fix it. What a waist of time and yarn. :(
Love the pattern though, I will try again and start with 35 Chain and a smaller middle circle. 😀
Love your videos
please tell me the advantage of the beginning loop instead of crocheting a rectangle and sewing sides and top hole
Thank you! For me, I liked the way that the top of the hat closed, it’s not as big of a seam. :)
@@RichTexturesCrochet thank you
I love this pattern! Made one for my husband and it was easy and fun to make! Thank you!
