There’s gotta be a yarn rule here or something because I used this pattern with an average thinner yarn and it worked perfectly but I just came to this vid to make another beanie with a slightly thicker yarn (I know I did the stitches accurately) and my beanie came out huuuuuge, super wide and wasn’t decreasing at the bottom. I literally had a huge crochet bowl. I ended up undoing the whole thing to save the yarn. I’m super bummed cause I thought it was gonna go smoothly like the first time I did it :( I don’t even want to try this pattern again in fear that it’ll start doing the same thing. I don’t wanna gamble whether my piece turns out or not, ya know??

So for the thicker yarn I just double one row of doubles, one row of 1 single and one double, and a row of 2 singles and one double, and then I went to all single double crochet rows. And it turned out the right size.

Future comments for myself if I make this one again & of coarse if it helps someone, that's always good.
This one was alot of trial & error for me with this; I fixed it over and over until I liked it. I like the outcome alot now.
2 comments were really helpful.... one about removing 1 row of increase rounds.... and another about creating a chain to measure the circumference required for the head. So thank you to those people for those inspirations.
I decided to just use a piece of yarn to measure my head circumference (bc I don't have time to count stitches). I pulled off 1 increase round and it was still too big, so I pulled off a second. Once the rim of this circle I had crocheted matched the size I want the brim to be, I started building regular DC stitches to get the height (stopped increases). But thing is.... she does 10 regular + 4 fpdc/bpdc for the brim..... I only needed 7 rows (once it was about to my hairline, for reference) then added 4 rows of fpdc/bpdc for the border. And that is visual preference, it could have worked with 8 rows of dc and 3 rows of fpdc/bpdc for a smaller rim if you don't want it that thick on the border. Anyway.
    So for me, I did....
    Size 4 yarn
    Size H (5mm) hook
R1: The original circle with 10 dc
    R2: 2 in each
    R3: 1,2 pattern
    R4: 1,1,2 pattern
    R5: 1,1,1,2 pattern
    R6-R12: 1 only
    R13-R16: fpdc/bpdc for brim
This worked for me personally. Hopefully this is enough info to help anyone troubleshoot who is struggling too.

What would happen if I made this with thinner yarn? I bought this beautiful yarn from James C Brett. It says it’s DK but it’s thinner than the other DK yarn I’ve had in the past. I love this pattern but I don’t want to mess up the yarn if I have to unpick it if it doesn’t work out 😭

      @MyRose911 11 місяців тому +1

Thank you for the reply. I gave it shot and on the second try I got it right. In case it helps anyone else, here’s what I did:
Begin exactly as shown in the video (but using 4mm hook).
Increase stitches for 2 extra rounds (so it will end up being every 6th hole, insert 2 double crochet, and then next round, every 7th hole, insert 2 double crochet)
Then I went around 11 times doing a double crochet in each hole, as shown in video.
Then for the brim, I did 8 rows of front/back post stitch also as shown. This made a hat that fits my head nicely (adult woman).
Thank you for the awesome video!!

I do what to make a quick note that almost no crocheter brings up when crocheting in the round. Start every other row off with an increase stitch (2 DC into the same stitch) If you don’t do this, but rather start all rows off with the appropriate number of 1 DC into each stitch first, all of the increase stitches will be aligned and you will end up with a hexagon instead of a circle. I keep it simple and I begin the pattern with an increase stitch on every even numbered row. So here is what I mean. Let’s say we’re starting at row 4.
Row 4 has a repeating pattern of one DC per stitch for 2 stitches, then 2 DC into the third stitch
Row 5 has a pattern of one DC per stitch for 3 stitches and then 2 DC into the 4th stitch
Row 6 has a pattern of one DC per stitch for 4 stitches and then 2 DC into the 5th
According to most in the round videos, row 4 will begin with one DC into the first 2 stitches and row 5 will also begin with one DC into the first 3 stitches. In fact, every row starts with this portion of the pattern. Do not do this. Start row 4 with 2 DC into the very first stitch and then do one DC into the next 2 stitches and so on. Row 5 will begin with one DC into the first 3 stitches, then 2 DC into the 4th stitch and on. Row 6 is an even numbered row, so start with the increase stitch of 2 DC into the first stitch then one DC into each of the next 4 stitches.
I hope this helps out any beginners who stumble across this video because this tip seems to be the biggest secret that crocheters gatekeep and I don’t know why.

For eg: row 2 will have 20 (two DC in each stitch), row 3 will have 30 (1DC and then 2DC in the next stitch), row 4 is 40, and so on till it fits your head, and then we add the ribbing

I LOVE this tutorial. There is no unnecessary talking for the sake of loving to hear your own voice. You explain things in a matter of fact way without constantly stumbling over your own words due to your mouth going faster than your brain and feeling the need to fill every moment with noise. Many crochet content creators will not edit out their word stumbling, so it makes it difficult to understand what they’re trying to say. Again, I believe they just love to hear themselves talk. I’ve been trying to find a simple tutorial to learn crocheting in the round and the incessant chatter from all the videos I have watched until this one made it difficult to focus. Thank you for getting straight to the point and only conveying what’s important. I now understand the pattern for increases in the round. You have a new subscriber.

Yes a great tutorial Just a comment for any other teachers. Please pause at the end of a row and please say what the number of the next row is ie. (Row 6 will be 1 single DC into the next 5 stitches followed by a 2 Dc in the next stitch. Repeat.) I must admit that once I've lost my place I need to reorient from the start of a row. Obviously I'm fairly new at this so my wording isn't good but if the words run into each other the order gets lost. Thank You .

This was by far the easiest tutorial to follow for a beanie that I've found so far. I was making one for an adult male, so I ended my last round of increases with 9 double crochets followed by an increase every 10th stitch. Then I crocheted 5 rounds without increases followed by 3 rounds of the pattern she uses at the bottom. It fit perfectly!

If you ever need to slow a video down (not this one it's perfect) UA-cam has the option under the three dots in the top right hand corner to slow the video. That's how I learned to crochet.

Such a lovely teaching voice. Trying to teach myself to crochet. What could go wrong? Ten minutes in, I’m still on the slip knot. The "yarn over" description is perfect for beginners. Now if I could get that far. Thanks for putting this together. Did I see a kitty walk past there?

Use a J hook it becomes a lot bigger for a man or a woman who has thick hair. Or a big head.

I love that you jump right into what is needed.
I love the colour of yarn choice.
I like hearing the soumd of the yarn as the crochet hook weaves its way through the pattern.
The patyern is nice and I have learned enough stitches to complete the project.
I must not leave out the warm and friendly visitor who was in the video for their cameo appearance.
Blessings upon you and your loved ones. Thank you for sharing
