Why is this? What is so special about this watch that’s only available in a precious metal? In today's video, I review my own reference 18038, discuss its unique history, and how it feels after a few months of ownership. But this is no ordinary review, since for me, this massively iconic watch has deep connections to New York City. So where better to review this piece?

usually i find full gold watches gaudy but the daydate really pulls it off with class. i find it a shame when some people go and cover the watch in diamonds. it already looks a million bucks!

Interesting. Which gold watches in particular do you find gaudy in comparison to this gold watch?..because to me, they seem identical. If you like gold..cool., but if you find gold gaudy, then there’re both gold..no?
I’ve been a watch collector for close to 20 years; my collection includes the Daytona, Batman and Hulk. The watch I wear 95% of the time is a 45 year old 1807 bark presidential that my father wore for 40 years before passing it onto me.
I love the dd bark finish … I have a 18248 DQ with the 12 stone factory bezel

Congrats on buying this grail watch of yours - truly a classic that will be relevant 100 years from now. I give you major props for walking around with such a piece... I know, I know, "never buy a watch you aren't comfortable wearing". I wouldn't be able to help but always be on guard wearing a solid gold Rolex around.

You are right TGV, time is the most precious commodity! That’s why we love to cherish, because we never now how much of it we have left!
Love the Day-Date. Spring for the 18238 if you can; the double quick-set is worth it plus the case width drops a bit. I brought a beat-up 18238 and had it refurbished by Rolex who did an amazing job returning the Day-Date to as-new condition with full waterproofing and, importantly they fixed the clasp mechanism (they tend to pop open and get a little loose with wear) so the piece (from 1995) presents and wears as-new. This video was a classy piece of work; capturing the inspiration one feels from wearing a certain model or metal - what it means to the owner is the real deal here. 100% correct too on the subtle appearance, most people think a FYG Rolex is just bling but these older DD models seem to just give off the right hue that only a noble metal can give. A delightful video showcasing one of the best cities in the world NYC as a backdrop to arguably one of the finest examples of horology yet conceived. 10 out of 10!

In my opinion the day date must be one of the best luxury daily drivers out there. The president bracelet on it's own is an absolute winner as well.

Hey, i wanted to thank you for introducing me to watches and the hobby of collecting these tiny liddle treasures.
I am from Germany and went to school there to become a mechanical engineering technician. For my graduation i wanted to buy a watch and went right on the internet to see what brands exist and read the tests about them.
Your channel popped up and you reviewed the brands i was interested in. After quite a while i decided to go with a Junghans Max Bill Automatic, since i come from an engineering background i wanted a mechanical watch to celebrate my graduation, also the fact that Junghans is a respected german company made me want to buy one.
This watch means alot to me, its the embodiment of my technical knowhow and my new job as an project engineer.
(Im going to start working there at September 2.) 😊
I connect my success to it and my drive to achive my goal. BUT i never wanted to brag with a watch, it should mean something to me and for the trained eye of other people it should be a statment for simplistic design and beauty.
I hope you enjoyed my story, for me it was important to tell you that. Your videos inspired me to dive head first into this hobby.

I borrowed my brother's Daytona to go skiing this year and it had this crazy ability to do exactly what you said- it felt like superman's cape, you put it on and just felt better 😁 I have a nice panda speedy which I think is cool... but the Daytona was next level and I think the daydate is the same, maybe less cool but more bossier (yeah that's a word I made up)

What a coincidence! me and the girlfriend were in the city around the same time! We visited the Met as well as the Museum of Illusions for a day trip before I begin my student teaching semester for my NYS certification. She also indulged me by having a look in the Omega and Tissot AD. I feel lucky to live so close and be able to go on spontaneous day trips like that.

I associate the day-date to a certain level of success. I wear a date just everyday and I will someday own the DD that will go to my son!!! Great content!
I like how if you wear a Rolex in NYC, nobody even cares since almost everybody has a ton of money. If you worn it in a smaller town, lots of people would think you are some kind of big shot.
Wealthier areas like NYC and west LA let you enjoy more expensive luxury items without unwanted attention. Just watch Doug DeMuro's videos on his Ferrari 360, said he got constant attention but a car like that in a rich area won't get noticed as much.
I've seen the entirety of the Sopranos about 6 times--the greatest tv show ever. James Gandolfini, a meat slab of a man, rocked the heck out of that 36mm Day Date. It looked so classic and natural on him. It was almost a character in its own right on that historic show.
Very well put. I agree, it suited him perfectly and such a wonderfully written show.
So clever, it certainly raised the level of what TV shows should be and will likely never be out done.

Regarding the sopranos, I disagree. People love to say they loved that show. Besides yourself, how many of your friends have re watched it? Not many. How many DVD box sets sold after the show? Not many. People love to praise the “acting” on that show. How many of those actors seriously worked after that show…not many. But yeah..great show😂

Very good review, blending your loved watch into your lifestyle and if I have to make a choice, I will also go for a 18038 because I want it to be much thicker than 18238 and ‘single quickset’ with only 42 is not really an issue at all.

That is the reason why I didn’t wait any longer to buy my first Rolex, the deep sea dweller 16660. Granted it’s not a presidential Rolex, but I have a 8 inch wrist. Heck the sea dweller looks small n my wrist but i love it. From the feel, look, and listening 👂 to the ticks so very faint. Yes I had it authenticated regardless of papers and box. I never thought much of this watch. I always thought it was too blingy for me. Recently I bought a homage and can’t stop wearing it. There is just something about it. It feels strangely masculine but somehow doesn’t look outdated (punny?)

The Day-Date II was 41mm I believe. And replaced after a few years by the smaller Day-Date 40...a much better balanced design. This 36mm is a great fit for your wrist though.
Guy I grew up with bought A Day-Date in 1986 , with that said this was to the watch to have ! Well fast forward to 2011 and I noticed he had a 18 karat Submariner and asked finally what happened ? He said he got rid of it because a lot of guys he does business with who he hates have it so he got a sub. My sister recently bought a lightly used 1803 on my recommendation a year ago. Splendid video !
That's actually the fate of many gold day date Rolexes. It also made me and my father swore off from wearing gold watches because it looks gaudy and worn by douchebags and we don't want to be associated with them

It’s a beautiful watch. There is no doubt. For me having a 7.6” wrist it’s a bit on the small side. But of course if I had the opportunity to own one I would!

Ef-ing brilliant review! Best on the net. Love how you talk about how it makes you feel...successful, accomplished, powerful. It is a watch that just radiates a sort of "cool" that can only be understood once you own one. Mine is a 118206 36mm, Glacier blue dial. Im very light-skinned so I selected platinum as I feel it best matches my coloring and most of what I wear. I re-fall in love with it each morning I put in on. I also have a GMT BLNR, but the Day-date edges it out. I have a couple others, but these are my go-to's. Funny, everyone in my family has already "spoken" for one once Im gone. The greedy bastards! Actually Im very happy about that as they each have a special meaning such as retirement, anniversary, marriage, best contract I ever had etc... So, Im very pleased that my wife and kids will have these for the rest of their lives and perhaps even pass them on to my grandkids one day.

A truly all-in-one watch one needs. It is a watch, a bracelet, precious metal, status, sporty. It is a watch I guess one can wear it for 24/7, never hv to remove for life, except during servicing.

Love the watch. But, I would not feel safe wearing a plain gold tone Casio in NYC or in any major urban setting let alone a Rolex unless I had my security detail with me. My downtown watch is always a simple Timex analog. It looks good and is a total "gray man" watch.

Very cool piece sir. I have A 1803 pie pan, 18 k . Had it for about 15 years, keeps perfect time, and I love it. Only wear it around house or special occasions, not too comfortable wearing it in shady places. If in New York, I’d probably wear my Omega Sea Master. Anyway very cool watch and thanks for sharing. The Urban Gentry indeed! they also made an ultra rare Daytona with a base 15 pulsation bezel... that was a touch out of budget haha, (indecently base 10 and base 15 are the only way to go, anything longer and you may as well just work it out yourself! Haha)

Every thing must come to an end. For me personally, after years of collection and then selling them i have learned that
for me there is only place for one special watch. One watch and thats it. I prefer having my dream watch then always buying compromises

So what’s the one watch? For me.. if money no object would be Patek 5712. I could sell my entire 8 piece collection and would be $50K short in the gray market... hence it would always be unattainable.
At 13:37 you had better used an Motorola International 3200 for this scene. This combination would throw you straight back in to the 90's.

I love my President. My father handed it down to me. I haven't taken the bracelet off of it so I don't know the exact reference number but it's an early 1970's w the bark finish. It's totally not me but I like to wear it on special occasions just because I can. Cheers !!!
