Why Villains Wear Rolex & Heroes Wear JLC: Reverso Duoface Calendar vs Day-Date Watch
Вставка
- Опубліковано 2 жов 2024
- What makes the JLC Reverso so classy compared to the Rolex Day-Date at around the same price? And why do comic book heroes and sophisticates tend to choose one, while the world of villains, men of power, and rebels tend to choose the other? In this video, I compare the Jaeger-LeCoultre Reverso Tribute Duoface Calendar to the Rolex Day-Date (ref. 18238) for a look at how these two watches came to be, including the cinematic, cultural, sociological, and stylistic history and design heritage that made them what they are today. What do you think about the watches featured in this video? Please share in the comments!

Tony wasn’t a criminal he was in the waste management business, completely legitimate
I had Tony’s voice in my head reading that. 😂
What are you going to do?
@@markharrison2484 he’s my biggest earner
Aye Tone
It’s a stereotype. And it’s offensive.
A stereotype that some embrace for their own sake, which prolongs it and takes little effort on their part to reap the rewards of an established image. Oooh, tough guy!
Tristano - This video was fantastic and the amount of work that must have went into this is mind boggling. I really appreciate that you don't just discuss the latest releases (which is fun, no doubt) but you bring context and and a deeper analysis to watches and horology as a whole. Thank you for all the amazing work you do and more importantly, thank you for sharing it with us.
"So there you have it; history, horology, pop culture, sociology, class, engineering..." - that's the Urban Gentry! Great vid as always.
Really appreciate the production quality and your attention to detail 👍🏻 as always: a pleasure to watch
Thank you so much, always appreciated. O&U!
Best regards,
TGV
I second that 🙂
@theurbangentry . Fantastic production, creativity, and content ! I had to keep reminding myself what I was watching, mesmerising.
TGV, this might be one of your best videos. Been a long time fan and you are so good at giving context to these iconic watches. This video in particular touches on so many different facets of each watch. Amazing production quality and editing as usual. Keep up the great work!
Except in most cases the context of what he is saying is incorrect…
@@HEATSEEKER00 any examples?
Thank you Ricky, you are a true gent. It makes all the hard work worth it when I hear from those who truly get it and appreciate it.
Onwards and ever upwards!
Best regards,
TGV
@@Tricky_Ricky44 Of course that person has no exanples, that type throws rocks and runs away.
what a wonderful video. you haven't just compared two beautiful watches, you were critical and aggressive in your presentation of their different histories. love it!
I’ve had this JLC since April 2023. It was a grail for me, and it’s become my favorite.
Big espresso 😂 Love these video essays where you place watches within their larger cultural and historical contexts, and the amount of work you put into finding all these great video clips and editing them into one video is amazing. Big espresso to you, T, you’ve earned it!
Are you kidding me? 30 minutes back I was searching the web for a JLC Duoface and wondered, if TGV would ever come up with a video about it. Nice!! 🎉
Hello! I was wondering if you would consider doing a video on vintage King Seiko, specifically the 44, 45, and 56 KS. The history behind King Seiko vs Grand Seiko and the Suwa and Daini factories is awesome. Regardless of the awesome history, these vintage pieces offer in my opinion the most affordable way to get into Grand Seiko esque pieces, as these watches are very similar to the 44 GS of that period with the beautiful grammar of design styling, but for half the cost. The workmanship of these watches are incredible, and they represent a large collector community. I would love to see a review, or just your thoughts on the world of vintage King Seiko!
The intellectual depth of your videos is truly enjoyable TGV. You are a special one! Onwards and upwards.
Amazing video! 🙌
About time you got some class and ditch the GMT... Secretly I'm jealous; gorgeous GMT by the way.. 😅
Tristano, this video was superb. I had never considered the Hero / villain concept regarding these two pieces. I like the art of the JLC compared to the gaudier Day-Date, but I also appreciate the personal success statement that the DD Carrie’s with it. For me, I doubt I could pull off a Reverso, and the DD just isn’t my bag. I will just keep hunting my quintessential centerpiece.
Thank you for all the hard work and the wonderfully entertaining and educational content. Phenomenal. Onward and upward, my friend.
This is such an incredible video. How lucky we are to have you make such useful commentaries 🙏🏼
This is your best video in some time. Excellent work.
What a brilliant video TGV! I actually missed this one as we were holidaying on the Med for a few weeks and thankfully yours and Marc's snobbery video brought me to this one. Thoroughly enjoyable. It was a pleasure to watch. Thank you!!
Once more - Awesome! : ) I appreciate these kind of educational videos where you analyse the design of iconic watches and also put it into historical context. : ) All the best!!
Greatly written and deeply intelligent as always
Amazing depth in both content and production. Well done as always!
I’m running out of superlatives for your videos. This was probably one of my favourites so far. Not just the editing, but the transcendence of a “mere” watch video to that of a socio-economic, cultural and historical perspective on design philosophies. Bravo, sir!
You almost had me with that Escobar themed Rolex ad. Couldn’t believe it and had to look it up. Nice one.
The presentation and photography are outstanding. Excellent work. Subscribed.
In Season 4 of the underrated TV show Halt and Catch Fire the character Donna played to perfection by actress Kerry Bishé flips her Reverso as she sits down to a meeting with a take no prisoners attitude.
Superb edition of this video and the context were watches are born. Congrats TGV
This was an excellent video, transcending "simple" watch-content and instead placing the dichotomy of a comparison within a greater cultural and philosophical whole, and how enticement towards either choice might be guided by subconscious affinities. Both captivating and thought-provoking, which is much appreciated. Thank you!
Educational and fun to watch with a cameo from Hugo whats not to like
Possibly your best video for a very long time. Good work!!!
Just finished watching the video Tristano. You nailed it!
This is how you make a watch comparison. Superbly detailed, cultural story telling, visually compelling. Just genius.
Another sublime production Tristano. Worthy of a small movie rather than a "humble" upload. Fantastic subject, music, story and content. This, is how you make a horological mini movie. Don't ever change my friend. O&U.
OK.....cards on the table.....I've liked the Reverso from afar for a while now. But until now I've never really been convinced that I should do it. Your video has now convinced me to do it now. I will add a Reverso to my collection. I already have two Day-Dates. Now all I have to do is figure out which one works on my 7.25" wrist. Don't suppose you can help me there?
Regardless, thank you for once again being a great positive influence on my collection sir. You are truly a gentleman and a scholar. Onwards......Upwards.......
This is an absolutely brilliant video. Thank you!
But the eggs benedict at the Cézanne brunch is to die for! LOL. Great video buddy. Have a super weekend. Cheers, D
Deep appreciation for this video. Thank you.
Fan-tas-tic video TGV, unrivalled. Thank you so much for sharing your love with us! 🩵
MAN! If the Reverso had a screw down crown with 100m water resistance, it'd outclass everything, except maybe a screw down crown 100m WR JLC Master Ultra Thin, I like the Polaris but it's tooltastic in essence, I want the looks of yore with the engineering of modern technology, if Mark is making 10mm thick watches with such prowess, JLC and the big boys have no excuse. And sure I might be in the minority that wants a dress watch with tool watch specs but I don't see the problem, Rolex does it and no one is fighting fire with fire.
Regarding the "square watch Itch", understand a square is a rectangle but a rectangle is NOT a square... So no, the Reverso will never scratch that itch. 🤔
these types of videos will especially make you stand out TGV!
Thank you so much 🙏🙏🙏
Best regards,
TGV
Great video, as always. Thanks TGV.
Yeah, so much in this video... Incredible work !
Great refreshing work, thank you.
Luv ya brutha…. Been subscribed since 2017. Your very best video! … learnt so much about horology, art, stoism, design, class…Belisimo ❤
Excellent videoessai, thank you!
Always happy to see a new upload!
Bravo amico, io che sono della Calabria, ci rappresenti bene, continua cosi' ci fa piacere. Tony
Absolute masterpiece TGV !
Documentary; EuropaTheLastBattle one my favorite ones on WW2 subject.
I love this kind of episodes 👍
A masterpiece of videography ❤❤❤
Great work as always!
Great video as always my friend! BTW, the Day Date looks better on you! Cheers!
A great way to end the day! Many thanks for more great content TGV, onwards and upwards 😊
"Good guys Watches vs Bad Boy watches" its a great concept!
Great production as always!
I love your videos so much, such a high quality in production and editing, keep up the good work!
Finally a reverso review! Thanks as always TGV
Of course, I've seen Hugo in many movies and plays, however I did not expect to see you, TGV play "Freddy" in 'Mr Inbetween'. Kipper's knickers performance and a top notch show. 👏👏
I'm a big fan of Jonathan Meades, and I gather you are, too: I noticed a copy of his book "Filthy English" in one of your previous videos. I see his influence in the production values, cultural interests, and delivery all over this video. I love seeing his legacy live on in this way, so well done!
Great thoughts, and as always very complex. This often makes your videos very attractive. It left me a little speechless. I am definitely in favor of the Reverso, it has always been one of my favorite watch models. The Day-Date, or indeed the Rolex models, have a completely different image than the Reverso. A Reverso is mostly bought by watch connoisseurs and style-conscious people. A golden day-date, on the other hand, has always stood as a symbol of power and self-expression. Rolex actually deserves it but unfortunately that's how it is.
Also have to say your videos are works of arts within themselves.
Don Draper wears both JLC reverso and Rolex Explorer 36 in Mad Men which underlines the complexity of his personality in the show ;)
Love how knowledgeable you are, that you always have interesting perspectives and unlike so many other channels on the topic, it's done with a unique perspective of someone who is at home both in the US and Europe, not to mention the production standard, great sense of humour and sheer class. One of my absolute favourite and easily one of the most enjoyable channels about watches! Keep up the great work!
Wonderful vid, as usual! Yes, the Rolex President's watch, especially, seems to have been the hallmark of status during the 1980s, the era of "power suits" and of making as much money as humanly possible. Thus, the watch bears, ideologically, some of that... obscenity, frankly. (Though that actually makes for a fascinating juxtaposition of its inheritance of obscenity against its intention of class.) Of the heritage of the Reverso, I know only what you've spoken here, but as you've pointed out, its very characteristics are so different - apart from sports, of course - that it's clear its essence lies far more along the lines of elegance and sophistication. Indeed, the watches are of two very different "personalities."
I'm wearing a G-Shock Mudmaster now TGV, what does that make me? 😊 Great videos AS ALWAYS!! Absolutely love the art deco period. In my own city of Istanbul we have the Pera Palace Hotel, a treasure of art deco with the famous guests who lived in the period staying there including Agatha Christie, King George, Ernest Hemingway, Mata Hari, and many other celebrities of the time. 😊
That makes you a hero my friend. I will certainly check out that Hotel, LOVE Istanbul, amazing city.
Thank you,
Best regards,
TGV
09:20 Sorry but it’s inappropriate to associate Russian language counting, atomic burst and WW2. Everybody disagree with Russian violence nowadays but History is science, not politics.
If we assume a watch says something about the wearer, what screams louder that you've made it in a gangster's paradise, literally or figuratively, than a gold Rolex? Meanwhile, the Submariner at this point stands for "generic rich folk". Would an everyman hero set in the current decade even wear a watch to begin with? Well, a fitness tracker would at least say something about our trend for self optimization.
You missed a great opportunity by not showing a 1980s clip of Ric Flair on one of his amazing promos as the Rolex wearing, limousine riding, jet plane flying, kiss stealing son of a gun! Wooooo!
That countdown in Russian was outright omimous taken all that is going on. And the shot of the beautiful VOLGA GAZ-21 at 9:55!! I live in the city of Nizhniy Novgorod (former Gorky) where they made these. Two refferences coming from my country in this video and what a heartbreaking contrast! Brilliant work TGV! You have a huge fan in Russia.
Great video 👍, the Reverso is simply classy and probably the better choice for me over any rolex....
Another fantastic episode TGV. I have been following you over the past few years and have witnessed exponential growth on all levels. Good job sir.
That JLC is just stunning. I personally hope to own a Reverso Eclipse someday in my lifetime. Its a reverso with 2 dials, a hand painted enamel artpiece and a guilloche dial you can open with a shutter/curtain system. Great video once again!! Learn something everytime i watch your videos
I love rectangular watches. Have a Rotary Cambridge myself. I find them so elegant.
YESSSSSSSS, LOVE that watch, I almost bought one. Excellent choice.
Thank you for reminding me about that watch,
Best regards,
TGV
@theurbangentry there was another Square rotary I got. This was a black and gold mechanical automatic, but i don't have the reference number. Waiting for it to get into my hands. But it looks gorgeous and it has a display case back.
For God, England & St. George!
This I respect perhaps TGV alter ego Hugo will like this comment.
Fantastic video AGAIN TGV, abstraction, contextualization, history and story. Nobody does it better in watch media. 👏👏👏bravissimo! Kim Besinger in Batman was so beautiful aww 🥰
Awesome video, as usual. You, sir, have the capability to make this hobby into an artform 😎
Well spoken and well said! I've been unable to take my Ball Trainmaster off for a few weeks now. But this video inspires me to give my Reverso Squadra Hometime some wrist time.
Heroes wear Omega, James Bond, Allied Forces in WW2
Thanks for the impressive, inciteful video. It makes one wonder how things came to be and where they (we) fit in. Having said all that, by comparison, where did you think the humble Casio would find its place?🤔
You need to give a warning before each video... that comment about the Kardashian's led to me chocking with laughter on my tea 🍵 🤣
When in Israel recently, I went on a fascinating walking tour of Tel Aviv about the incredible Art Deco (Bauhaus inspired) architecture. Known as the International Style, it has led to the city being listed as a UNESCO World Heritage site.
molte grazie signore Veneto. Really appreciate the time you put into your content. A Labour of love.
That opening movie sequence was immense, very well produced T!
Both are pure class, but your Santos trumps them both for me, a perfect combination of both styles. Although I must admit, a slim smaller Reverso is a bit of a grail watch for me. But as always, who knows where the path leads.
Top quality video as always!
Capolavoro, bravo Tristano 👍
This nothing short of a documentary. While I always enjoy your content, this was so well done and informative it stands out on it's own.
Thanks for the best watch content on the web! I especially enjoyed this episode. I love the discussion of the watches as products of their times, extensions of a natural process of their times.
Smashing video TGV! Loved the architecture and historical references. The way to go!! Waiting for the next instalment
Wow! TGV, una delle tue puntate più belle e più interessanti! Devi fare una collab con Alessandro Barbero! I can't even imagine (actually, I can and I'd be scared to prepare the script of such a show like this one) how long it took you to write all this. Bravissimo ancora.
Grazie fra, O&U!
T.
I've wanted a Reverso for years but with the recent price increases and my interest and love if Cartier growing over the last few years I purchased a Santos recently and absolutely love it. Maybe one day I'll buy a Reverso but for now the Santos has my heart.
I think your Day Date is still the sole ultimate watch, the rest are quite secondary.
Superb episode, one of your best! I'm a fan of art deco, but I prefer mid-century modern. The Day Date wears better on my wrist than the Reverso. Both are lovely watches.
Yet again another great show just before going to bed (here in the Netherlands..), love art deco, checking out Chrono 24 as we speak, convinced on adding a (vintage) reverso now, cheers for that!. Always looking forward to that little blue dot for new content on your channel. Great inspiration, keep up the good work!
If I wasn't subscribed already I definitely would be after that intro. Simply brilliant especially the Kardashian comment. Well done sir...
My wife owns a Reverso Duetto. Hope to pick up the 27mm monoface for myself soon. Thank you for the beautiful content TGV.
You are one classy couple.
Thank you,
Best regards,
TGV
Growing up in NY in the 60's and having an Italian father, a number of his friends did own the Rolex. My Father bought a Patek, it was oval in shape. Maybe he wanted to separate himself somewhat from his colleagues? Interesting points. I grew up loving mechanical watches, and other watches in general. I am glad my grown son has inherited my love as well. He has owned a Day/Date Rolex but was not in love with it. His favorite is Omega...being a huge James Bond enthusiast. ;)
I love this Calendar Duoface poetic complications. And I would have pull the trigger. But its big size ruins almost everything. I'd rather go for a RM
Great mix of History, Hollywood, and Huzzah!! 👌
Love Hugo's cameo appearances 😂!!!
What I love about the batman movies was that every character that played him was like the perfect fit. Keaton, Kilmer, Clooney, and Bale. The only one I have a hard time accepting was Robert Pattinson. For some reason, I don't think he fits as batman.
Love Art Deco. It has a certain class and exudes the future, but a incredibly beautifully designed future, not just a functional one. The JLC is a beautiful watch. Fantastic info as usual with some great visuals of my favourite building, the Chrysler. Thank you sir 👍
This is just beautifully executed, I want more of this analysis.
Another excellent amalgamation of design, art, history and horology.
I loved this!
I think the day-date 218238 with rubies at 6 & 9 is possibly my grail watch. Blingy....I know but not too OTT, or at least I believe it isn't so.
