How much Gold is ACTUALLY in a "Solid Gold" Rolex?
Вставка
- Опубліковано 2 лют 2025
- You'd be surprised how much gold a gold luxury watch contains! But don't take our word for it. See how we take a popular gold Rolex apart and find out its exact gold content by weight.
The watch we used in this picture is the yellow gold Rolex Day-Date 40, reference number 228238, which is going for around $39,000 in the market as of the day this video was recorded (on 10/8/2020).
Typically, the difference in price between similar stainless steel and gold models of a specific watch brand is significant. Some people think that the price difference is due to the value of gold, but is it really? I mean, the watch movement is not made out of gold, since both gold and stainless timepieces of the same model/brand have the same movements. What's different are the other parts, like the case, bracelet, etc.
So we set out to take the watch apart and weigh those parts, then calculate their total value based on the market price of gold, which was around $1,900 a troy ounce (or $61 a gram) on the day we recorded the video footage.
On the video, you'll see our preferred watchmaker, Yuri Lopez from Chrono Sky (Instagram link below), take the watch apart and set each gold piece on a calibrated scale.
/ chronosky
What interesting thing to mention is that during the last 20 year period, from 2000 to 2020, gold outperformed the US stock market (S&P 500) by a pretty wide margin, making an investment in gold during that same period worth 7 times the initial amount!
On a side note, gold luxury watches, whether for men or women, are made in 18K gold, which is 75% gold by weight. On the video, we also compare the gold weight of the watch to a 24K chunk of gold.
After you watch the video, comment how close was your guess...what percentage of the gold watch's price was due to the dollar value of its gold content?
Happy Guessing!

They told you not to buy the watch from the guy with a long rain coat in the subway???
Full disclosure: The value of the steel in a steel Rolex is roughly 25 cents or 0.002% of the price of the watch. The gold watch is looking like a better value now.
Ha Ha, you're right. The discrepancy is even greater with stainless steel.
Except that the steel Rolex sports models go up in value.
@@calsurflance5598 Depends on your entry price. Everything is cyclical. I've lived through several Rolex bubbles and corrections. I'm old enough to know this one is not unlike the previous cycles.

So true. I bought my submariner from an AD at retail and see the secondary market add $1500 to what I paid . When the flippers loose interest the secondary market will soften. I will never sell mine though so (to me)it’s a moot point.
@@calsurflance5598 Sub at retail is optimal. Nice job.
I would have guessed even less, at around 10% to 15%.
Interesting to know, but I love my Day-Date due to her Design and not due to the content of gold 😁
Ditto.
That's an informative video. I always had this question in mind but fortunately came across this video and got my answer.
Not a flashy person to buy a gold Rolex but will go for a stainless steel Rolex watch. Hope that day comes soon.

Thank you David. We were a bit worried because we've never done something like this before, even though it had been a head scratching topic for us for a long, long time. Maybe we should make more videos like these! 😉
A Steel Rolex would be far worse would you think in cost ?
Indeed, the discrepancy in steel is even greater.
Obsolete? Have you been checking price trends? It doesn't sound obsolete.
@Kj Jones I don't think so...
In conclusion, do not buy gold watch for the sake of gold. Purchase stainless and use the difference to purchase actual gold or silver as fiat currency collapses.
Love your summary 👌
But what if the gold in the watch x7 in the next 20 years. You would have 56.000 in gold by 2040.
You don't have to try hard to convince me on gold, after all, it's God's money 😜
how about a two-tone Rolex?
@@xperiahkarc much less gold in a two-tone watch.
i'm surprised the springbars are gold, and I don't get the point, isn't steel stronger?
More money on maintenance in the long run for Rolex if it’s made of gold
I feel surprised as well but I guess if they do go through the effort to make it 18k gold, it is less likely to scratch the watch when you replace the strap? If you put a harder material like steel against gold it's going to easily damage the surface.
If they use steel springbars, the steel will damage the gold case (the lug holes) in the long run (just slight micromovements when the watch is used), since its by many factors harder than soft gold.
@@TheCatfishBlues It's actually the other way around. Gold abrading against stainless steel eventually damages the steel more than the gold.

I was in the dental laboratory business for 40 years. People were always shocked when they discovered the gold in their gold crown was worth on average $30-40. "But I paid over$1000 for that crown!". Well you were paying me for my labor and overhead and much much more to the dentist for HIS labor and overhead.
Yes, for a service industry (like yours) it is a bit different. The greatest value is your service, not the metal content of the crown.
@@Crmjewelers same thing goes for the Rolex bud....
It's actually more about brand recognition.
I had gold crowns because they were actually cheaper than porcelain/ceramic crowns. The reason being the work/time that went the gold crowns was a lot less.

Very informative video! Honestly it`s more than I thought... Because some stainless steel models are quite expensive and in those cases it can`t be because of precious metal.
True, the material cost vs price comparison is even worse for stainless steel models.
2 things:
- This dial has factory-set baguettes, keep that in mind for the value.

When gold is re monetised, a gold rolex at todays prices will be worth its weight in gold. Good investment.
Gold is definitely on our radar as well!
Thanks I have trouble finding this info. I want to buy a Yacht Master 42 in white gold and want to know the grams of gold and no one can tell me.
The markup for gold tends to be insane, so 20%, considering that the datejust equivalent is already a 10K watch, is pretty good.

I had this value proposition when I saw a 1990s 18k Rolex going for $8,500 in 2016-2017. Gold was less but I knew it was perhaps $5000-$6000 on the metal value and the labor value of creating the watch too.
Watches have value because of the engineering behind it, and as it's a store of labor. Gold has a value because of the time it takes to mine, its rarity and its refinement process.
True. Did you wind up buying that 90s Rolex back then?
@@Crmjewelers bad news is no Rolex, but I invested in BABA and FB stock so I had better returns. Have a 1960 18k Universal Geneve Polerouter date, and Tudor BB Steel now
@@pwally2714 nice pieces man, congrats!
Which it was 100%, but for that, we can just buy gold! 😉 Great video!
Thanks man. Really appreciate it.
I legit guessed 20% exactly. However, the watch isn't priced for gold alone. Labor on making the watch has to be accounted for, the movement of the watch, engineering, and paying someone to assemble it, plus retail mark up. You don't wear precious metals in raw form, so it's justified that a watch like this comes with a high price tag.
Good guess! Yes, you're right. All of those factors affect the price, but remember that "high" is a very gray area.
No Shit...
So a $39,000 gold watch with only approximately $9,000 worth of gold will have a mark up of $30,000 ? Sounds more like price gouging off of a luxury brand name . Unless the watch is a one of a kind time piece then there is no valid justification for a mark up that high . I'm pretty sure that some of the internal mechanism are used in their other models of Rolex watches because it is massed produced . It's not like you have to wait for the watch to be made on every order , the model watch is sitting in many show case retail stores or stock rooms . It's not even a limited edition in design and technology . There is no $39,000 worth of craftsmanship and materials in the watch but it s mostly $39,000 worth of status symbolism that is being paid for .
I hear you Manny, but I think that another factor that's causing hard assets like watches to become so inflated is a continuously loose Central Bank policy. 🤷♂️
@@mannybruce8950 Yes and no. One thing you should consider is that you're helping to pay quite a few people's salaries when you buy a watch like this. Even if there is roughly $30K worth of profit, that isn't just going into the pocket of one person/company. Rolex employs 4,000 people worldwide. These people are paid very well for the products they put out. Aside from that, there are also the dealers to account for which make a decent commission on the product. I agree it's somewhat of a status symbol, but it creates ways to help the super wealthy shed some of that weight in wealth and spread it around. When you consider non luxury brand watches, like G Shock for example, that you can pick up in Walmart for $200-$400, not a lot of people are making decent money off of something like that. The commissions can't be very high (if any at all), and because they sell in volume, most of the profits go right into the pockets of the manufacturer. I think there is a huge plus side to having luxury brands on the open market by helping a lot of everyday people earn a better living.
How does it compares in price with a similar Rolex watch (ideally the same model) made of steel?
They don't have this 40mm model in steel, but in the future we'll make a video about an actual gold model, like a Submariner, that has a steel equivalent to compare.
Hi Crm, where can I get to buy the pure gold you compared it to? Also Where's the best place to save that kind of gold for future sale?
The movement is probably worth more than its weight in gold.
No doubt
Luxury watches are highly priced because of the movement the brand uses, so no doubt.
If I wanted an element, I'd buy it directly
Actually no. Worth is not the same as Price. These watches cost a lot because of marketing. When you buy a 10k$ Rolex, you spend about 1000 to 1500$ on the actual watch. The other 8500 is the price of the name 'Rolex'. Let's not fool ourselves. Rolex makes about a million watches a year. It's an industrialized, mostly automated proccess. Their movements are no better than any top grade ETA, and even worse than the Coaxials you'll find in Omegas priced half as much.

Look at a 20k Lange and its movement finish, alot of thier cost goes into the craft. Not with rolex.
@Huge Hulk yep, a display of wealth vs buying the best.
@Huge Hulk so people who know watches don't have money? Hmmmm? 🤔
@Huge Hulk I know a lot of sophisticated collectors who like Rolex watches as well. I don't think we can generalize about these things.
Rolex has their own foundry and a team of Metallurgist. They use superior alloys such as platinum or palladium in some cases to stabilize and inhibit tarnishing. Every other timepiece manufacturer simply orders 18kt. It also allows them unique opportunities to come up with some one of a kind products. The dream dust Dials were a direct result of the research team looking at the gold cooling which created a dream dust look and applying that to there dial making.
Yeah, rolex have the best marketing for sure but they very stale with regards to design, complications, movement finishing and innovation.
They would rather ad rolo at the start of everything than get around to applying AR on thier watches.
Take the boxy ugly sub case, no one really liked it but because of the brand they convinced themselves that it was attractive and toolish, they have finally corrected this after a decade.
Look at the dials of the unique langes.
Or even the movements and complications of thier rivers JLC and Omega....they make a solid but basic watch thats then marketed to hell.

Just proves my point, Rolex the most overrated expensive watch out there!!! Your paying for a name that has been very well marketed. In the late 50-60s rolex were a mediocre watch brand running along side Mido for example. Some of the Mido range were more expensive than Rolex, but then Rolex brought in a very good marketing team. There’s really nothing special about Rolex, the movements they use are quite basic (but reliable) there are plenty of watches available today they may not have the reputation of a name like Rolex but certainly just as good if not better.
You can call it marketing, mass hysteria/brainwashing or whatever you want, but in all fairness, Rolex watches have also proven to be good investments in general over time. The proof is in the pudding 🤷
The good thing about a Rolex is it holds it's value very well. You can probably sell the watch and earn a profit after owning the watch for years. That is if you can afford one. I can't see myself owning a Rolex ever. No matter how much I save I have other more important spending.
There is nothing average about Rolex. If you think there overpriced compared to other watch company’s you should do more research
