that one scene where Riri tried to recreate the same flight test as Tony's mark 2 so effortlessly, even magically made the icing problem disappear, my heart was crushed, that ironman scene was vandalized by some "genius teenager" who can do it effortlessly without any notable effort at all compared to Tony who literally had to test it with many, many trials and errors, literally undermining his legacy by making it something that can easily be replicated by a girl not even a third his age, even already advancing to energy repulsor tech in the first armor
And the thing is if she had some connection to Tony or had his designs that’d be totally fine! Like Peter Parker had Jarvis so it makes sense that his suits would be prevented against the issues Tony faced because HE ALREADY KNEW ABOUT THEM
This is the reason Riri needed more time if they were going to go there, Instead, they shoehorned her into Wakanda Forever. She actually DID have Tony's schematics. She burned the copies before they left the warehouse. The problem is it's a "handwaved" sentence on how she got them, or how she got the materials to build it. I remember when Marvel cared about a character's backstory, especially when it's linked with a legacy hero. Oh well, that's too much to ask, guess I care a lot less now. 😂😂
They did the same thing with shuri years before that when she made stark and banner look like complete idiots (despite their whole shtick being that they are geniuses AND they had more experience with the technology).
@@looinrims let's forget about diversity and stuff because "modern producers" will always do that shit to the point it's best to simply ignore it and actually talk about the actual problem of Riri's character development, at the very least ,I expected her to do that armor making thing AFTER she reached wakanda or something, not before those wakandan found her, like holy shit man, it's seriously baffling how she can make arc reactor that's much more efficient with scraps she found in some household junkyard, even tony and yinsen had to use extremely rare part from stark's super high tech missile, which is not even strong enough to fly mark 1 for more than few minutes and she effortlessly created something strong enough to fly for a prolonged period of time and even be able to shoot repulsor rays at her first makeshift ironman suit project I'm actually fine with her as a diverse ironman-ish female protagonist with a simple fix of her having actual development and connection as to why she is eligible to be ironheart, like for example, tony saved her and her family in the past, she got motivated, developing some smaller gadgets first, slowly building up her repertoire until somehow she tried to help others using her gadgets, getting some connections from some people she saved and getting supports in building even more advance gadgets to the point Shuri somehow caught wind of her technological prowess, secretly helping her with various knowledges and parts, and then finally got into making her first flying suit and AI system, let's see.....a single movie about her before wakanda forever should at least be sufficient introduction instead of simply introducing her outta nowhere already advancing to repulsor beam and efficient flying suit techs TLDR, yes, I actually expected something a wee bit better and got surprised at how much lower the producer can stoop just to introduce ironheart
What's really frustrating about the Wakanda thing is that then hoarding resources and standing by as bad things happen was actually addressed in the original. It was a large part of Killmonger's motivation. So they had some self awareness originally, but now they've regressed.
What's really frustrating about the Wakanda thing is the writers don't seem to understand how isolationist cultures work. Never, throughout history has an isolationist culture become advanced. They tend to fall behind or regress. Just look at any mountain culture such as Appalachia or look at what happened to Japan during their isolationist period.

Also after they regressed due to Poppy and Opium. It was legal and snuck in. The West was isolated until the americas was “found”. But I think it’s ok to have an isolated nation on screen that’s advanced but make the shit make sense lmao. Namor was under Lester forever and used whales and swimming as transport. Wakanda had ships and buses more advanced than any other nation and similar to gechiles Thanos had and in GOG. But I guess because they had spies in other countries they would learn and take that back and use thier tech to become advanced. The first movie did discuss spies in other countries. @@matane2465 wakanda isn’t a real society, it is not designed to operate as such. That being said there is leadway especially since wakanda is extremely powerful in the comics. The writers are simply trying to portay the nation of wakanda in a realistic way relative to its state in the comics.

11:16 the whole time while watching WandaVision, I fully watched it with the mindset that Wanda was in fact the villain. This did not change once during my entire watch.
When my wife and I finally sat down to watch Black Widow, I had recently watched your video talking about how women will always beat men in many modern movies, and how showing a man beating a woman (evil or not) is almost impossible these days. With that in mind, we actually had several plot points revealed to us: like how when Black Widow was getting beaten by a masked individual, we quickly realized that HAD to be a woman under the mask; or when the big tough guy finally gets to show how big and tough he is, but finds himself fighting women…well…it was obvious what was going to happen. He didn’t get to beat a single one and was just a punching bag. So we tested your observation, and it was completely true.
Funfact: Only the unmasked Task Master was played by Olga Kurylenko, the action scenes/"stunts" were done by a man - it's almost like Darth Vader who was played by David Prowse, voiced by James Earl Jones (because Prowse sounded too English: ua-cam.com/video/KQFho0_G1VI/v-deo.html) and "faced" in his final scene in Return of the Jedi by Sebastian Shaw.

Just look at the justification for Wanda’s actions Wanda enslaved and mass murdering people: “Wanda didn’t know what she’s doing even when she knew it, it was because Darkhold influenced her.” Wanda messed with Tony’s mind into creating Ultron and messed with Bruce’s mind into killing civilians: “Nah, Tony and Bruce are weak-willed pussies. Agreed it is annoying and insulting for any character, male or female, to just show up and demand the same recognition as a character that has paid their dues on and off screen... one of the female characters who was legitimately treated badly and sidelined was BLACK WIDOW
When I left the theater after watching Endgame in 2019, I remember telling myself that "it's probably gonna suck after this. This is the peak of the mountain" I'm disappointed that I was right P. S. RIP Jason David Frank
Well you can’t possibly have a bigger battle with more at stake. Then we’re supposed to forget all that and be grateful for much less at the same price.
Honestly Endgame wasn't even the peak. Infinity War was considerably better, and the seeds of idpol and other issues the Drinker mentioned in the video were already beginning to grow. Compare the two side-by-side and it becomes more and more apparent.
I don't even think Endgame was the peak of the mountain. I think Infinity War was the peak of the mountain and it was all downhill from there. Infinity War was a much better movie than Endgame. Endgame wasn't terrible but it had a much less compelling version of the same villain, relied on Captain Marvel based deus ex machina not once but twice to bail out characters from situations she had no reason to even know were happening, contradicted its own time travel rules at the end with Captain America, and had one of the most cringey scenes in the MCU up to that point with the whole "girl power!" thing in the final battle. Sure, they've surpassed that level of cringe many times over since then, but at the time it stood out. For those reasons I think Infinity War was a better movie than Endgame and after IW is when things started going downhill. Captain Marvel was trash for a whole host of reasons we all know, Ant Man and the Wasp was one of the first MCU films to feature the current trend of making the female version of the male hero be better than him in every conceivable way. The cracks in this facade were showing before phase 4 even started.
We could have gotten Gunn's original plan to flesh out the Cosmic MCU building up Galactus and the Silver Surfer which would have perfectly segued the Fantastic Four. Or conversely, we could have centered this phase through Doctor Strange, building up the supernatural side of the MCU with Mephisto as the main antagonist and even have that segue into using Blade and Ghost Rider. But instead we get the cabal of clowns.
and now Gunn is gone to DC to try to unfuck it. Marvel is so multifaceted that they could have gone in any direction. super natural with moon knight, blade, werewolf by night, Mephisto, even rented out Morbius from sony would have been great given a story line and some decent production/direction. instead they just vomited garbage of the week oh look this week its the celistials, next week moon knight, next month is magic and multiverse, this summer is replace capt america, fall we are doing a terrible wokanda movie and lets jam a she hulk show in that hates the fandom. brilliant. and they wonder why their highest grossing film since endgame is wokeanda. its not helping that the rest of Disney is just as broke dick creativity wise as Marvel.
I am actually surprised, considering the villains they've already used, that they didn't angle for some alliance of the Scarlet Witch and Gor and Namor and Galactus and so on--that'd be sort of obvious and dumb, to me, but would have been in line with simplistic Hollywood thinking.
It was just so...... bad. Like, really, _really_ bad. What's even worse is seeing people defend her actions for her _imaginary,_ _made_ _up_ children. They are no more a reality in that fiction then her in our reality.

@@langanhlakanipho I'm glad that I did stop after Endgame. The bits of stuff I've caught since then has either been instantly disappointing, (Loki) or outright stomach turning. (She Hulk) As far as I'm concerned, Marvel died with Tony Stark and Captain Rogers.
The one difference in Boseman's case is they did not need to get rid of the character, but they chose to do so, and played on the actors' real-life grief over Boseman's loss.
I liked the way Wakanda Forever used that to create some "real" moments of loss. We got the actually see people grieve and those scene did a solid job. But as others have mentioned Black Panther was "snapped" for 5 years. The easiest path (yes Shuri took up the mantle of BP in the comics) was to have M'Baku take the lead. He challenged BP and fought for the throne of Wakanda. M'Baku had already completed most of a hero's journey and showed real growth in WF (that speech about "They view him as a god, we can't kill him." was incredible). If Disney wants to continue a Wakanda franchise, M'Baku is the lead.
I actually liked Wakanda Forever, yet I can understand why so many people have negative views about this movies. I think that had WF been made into a 5-part series for Disney+, this could have then led to a different Black Panther sequel with Wakanda Forever being the bridge between the first BP movie and it’s sequel.
Peak emotional exploitation by Disney. Bob Chapek couldn't be fired quick enough but at the same time, it's not like Bob Iger will turn things around and get back to creatively refreshing ideas, either.
@@AdderTude Bob Iger was the reason behind the decline of Disney content in general since 2005. Chapek has only been CEO for barely a year. These projects take at least 2-3 years of development before we hear about them. All the projects that have come out “under” Chapek were greenlit and developed under Iger’s management. Disney is going in the ground especially since Iger said they aren’t changing the direction they are heading in and they don’t feel they are being political at all.
@@GLJosh Mostly, yes. But those scenes just didn't really fit in the movie. And yet, if you remove those scenes, you have a pretty shit movie. Which is rather the definition of an exploitation movie; if something is included as the hook to make an otherwise lackluster movie remotely interesting, it's exploiting that to save itself. Disney had to include that shit to avoid being another bomb.
My father used to always hate watching movies and being reminded of political issues and I always questioned why. I think he summed it up pretty well. "I watch movies to escape the world we live in, not be reminded of how bad it all really is. I'm already aware of these issues and I get they need addressing. That's why I watch the news. I don't watch movies to be reminded of it and if I did: I'd CHOOSE to watch those specific movies about the subject, like Schindlers List or something. I watch Alien or The Terminator to go on a visual adventure and forget the world for an hour or so. Not to be reminded that I'm a bad person with a sordid past." Why can't we have those adventures anymore? It seems everything has to be injected with a moral that doesn't match the story/adventure we're trying to escape to and instead of making it seem more real we're just diluting the plot. The cost of this is regressing away from the adventure/escape we all desire to experience.
I don't even watch new movies unless I have VERY good reasons to believe they won't suck. Like Bob De Niro says in Ronin, "If there's doubt, there's no doubt". We already have a century of cinema at the tip of our fingers. I'd rather catch up with all the great movies I haven't yet watched, hell I'd rewatch Blade Runner for the 500th time before even giving Marvel a chance.
Is funny how Jennifer Lawrence runs her mouth about man and yet the entire reason why she got movie roles is because she was sleeping with the producer.
I honestly wouldn't be surprised, if the movie They Live was happening in real life. Somebody get me a shotgun, a pair of sunglasses, and just for good measure, a pack of bubblegum.
“Identity politics is the death of entertainment”. Very well put my friend. Entertainment is supposed to be a reprieve from daily life, not a deeper plunge into the same shut we’re bombarded with daily.
The problem is that those "politics" boil down to "Side A good, Side B bad" and that's propaganda (unless it is about morally wrong things like war) Politics in media should be something like "Is side A good? Is side B justifiable?" Because then it makes the viewer/reader/player question their own beliefs and can bring some sort of discussion around it, rewarding the player/reader/viewer's intelligence.
@@thinkingboi9508 That's what made Civil War so good. It gave you a dilemma. It invited the audience to form their own opinion, their own ideologies and their own justifications for those ideas. It wasn't like "iron man team is bad. Cap team is good". There was genuine conflict to which the audience could engage. But now the "moral conflicts" they could present aren't even conflicts anymore, they are presented as facts. "Men are bad. Women are good". That's it, the MCU states this as an unquestionable fact. There's no dilemma, no room for discussion.
@@thinkingboi9508 Correct, inserting politics isn't bad when it's subtle and makes the audience ask questions. Not beating you over the head with "the message." No one likes to get preached at. They were smarter than that, and they even showcased what happens when wanting fairness and equality turns into bitterness and hatred: Magneto.
I would never wish this torture on another person. but I truly think it would be interesting to do a supercut of every time someone in Phase 4 says "You're amazing." I feel like I'm stuck watching a self-help seminar in a hotel lobby
I honestly loved Shang-Chi. Characters were beautifully fleshed out and the story was rich in detail and heart. That said ... it didn't really feel like it was part of the MCU. Just a great stand-alone story.
Absolutely agree, I feel like it was an amazing movie but they really should have had a way to tie it to marvel more besides Shang chi’s dads organization
@@DokkanMaster Definitely agree with that part. That was a common issue throughout all of phase four, unfortunately. But the film itself was fantastic. I’d have seen it even if it weren’t an MCU movie.
Everyone's reception to phase 4 is just the parent telling their child "I'm not angry, son. I'm disappointed." And then we go off and frown in disappointment
Reminds me of the Little House on the Prairie books where Ingalls is actually shocked and hurt when he thinks that his girls are telling him a lie to his face. Until they tell the actual truth, that they obeyed the _letter_ of his law but not the spirit. They weren't actually lying, and they can't help but confess what they actually did in the face of his disappointment. And he can only walk to the door quickly so they can't see him laughing in amusement and relief, because they were still very naughty and need to be dealt with. Then he comes back and lays down the rules very clearly and with no room for mistake. And then everything is happy again. Fantastic books, and a great example of actual strong female characters with human attributes, and a strong, loving, protective father and devoted husband who fails in judgement sometimes but is always a rock in the lives of his wife and daughters and always ensures their safety and provision first. Fantastic books.
Seems to me that phase 4 was a great opportunity for worldbuilding. You have a planet that is desperately trying to recover from the snap, and then the subsequent undoing of the snap. They kinda tried to do that in Falcon and Winter Soldier, but gave up after that. It just became multiverses and hidden worlds. It's like a kid pulling all their toys out in one room and then going into another room to play video games. "Hey, are you going to clean this mess up?" "No, that's boring. I'm doing this now."
Yeah the snap would have left power vacuums all over the universe that could have been used to write any number of stories. I think that the infinity stones should be indestructible. Bring in Galactus or something. Now that half the universe is dead he's one hungry boi.
Plus the infinite multiverse makes everything meaningless. They treated the Infinity Stones as a throwaway joke in Loki. Who cares that our heroes stopped Thanos in one world when there are infinite other worlds where they didnt?
@@Laneous14 That actually didn't make sense in Loki since the point was they were preventing multiverses from occurring and forcing only one timeline to exist. There should only be one set of Infinity Stones.
I think they said their plan was to give people a break and focus on smaller character-driven stories. The problem is that they can't make those. They're incapable.
The truth is, they had two options after endgame. Double down and start building up the next big villain right away, or what they chose to do instead. Kill off all the momentum and start from scratch campaigning entirely off of nostalgia. They chose wrong. Now that they're finally trying to build up the next villain, their fan base had diminished, and lost their momentum they worked so hard to get
Small character driven stories require smaller production teams who aren't as concerned with the bottom line and more concerned with the characters. Disney just sees small and character driven as buzz words for money
They can’t now because their gender ideologies literally are incapable of not getting in the way. Watch a review of or watch the new Willow tv show to see what I mean. Even a smaller story they literally can’t not do it.
Here's something that could have tied the 4th phase together: a consequence for meddling with time. (If Multiverse of Madness or any other movie covered this, I do apologize. I haven't been invested in Marvel movies for some time.) Be it through some sort of entity that regulates the timestream or some unforeseen anomaly like random events happening in their world, it could have been a way for them all to address individual issues that tie into something bigger down the line. But no, we got stuck with a line-up of characters that didn't necessarily shine.
@@cosmic_tkb Unfortunately, I was being serious because I haven't watched the Loki series. Nice to know that they did address it. Did they at least do it well?
@@ShadwehUmbrea personally, I really liked Loki. It has some problems but overall it’s pretty good. Your comment is hilarious then because you basically described the series, almost exactly lol.
It's a shame that they seem so afraid to make new characters and instead just keep trying to carry on with the old ones. One of the MCU's greatest strengths was their ability to take minor characters from their IPs that general audiences hadn't heard of, and make us realize why they were so cool. When the MCU started, the main characters people knew about were the X-Men and Spiderman, it was pretty niche to know more than that.
And Hulk. Prior to the X-Men movies, they were almost unknown to non-comics-nerds. The average person on the street knew Superman, Batman, Wonder Woman, Spider-Man, and Hulk.
that was one of the nice things about the mcu coming from a huge dc fan. I grew up with dc, never cared for marvel. i watched all the shows (batman tas, JLU, etc.), bought the games, filled my room with dc junk, and even owned a few comics. but dc had been historically terrible with their live actions films. to the point where I was embarrassed even hinting to anyone i liked dc. mcu came along and although i originally despised it thinking i was at some kind of war with marvel, i was gradually getting more and more invested with marvel related stuff. these films were just too good to not be a part of. I even found myself looking at origins and was eventually investing more time into marvel interests than dc. idk how, but they somehow managed to crumble all that. they had everyones full attention and turned it to a "lets no longer give a shit" disaster. i wasnt expecting infinity war or end game quality, i dont think anyone was, but holy shit how they managed to ruin everything they built is beyond me. Every phase doesn't need a large scale threat, but something needs to run through all the movies, and Multiverse was never going to be anything else but an excuse to swap out actors. No matter what threats the multiverse holds, they really don't show up until someone chooses to travel from universe to universe, and those threats are usually local to each show.
Larry Niven did a great scifi short story about the multiverse, many decades ago. People are committing suicide at high rates. A police officer is told to find out why. The world has discovered the multiverse and how to easily travel there and back (although the "homing signal" starts to get a little "fuzzy" as time goes by). There's a great horrible ending scene. The officer looking at a window, thinking about everything he's learned, that so many of the suicides had expressed a "nothing matters" view. He pulls out his pistol and checks the load and checks the safety is on and (this goes on for about 8 lines, slightly differing sentences/ ending the story) and puts the gun to his head and pulls the trigger. This could have been a great philosophical question for Phase 4 to address.
@@aeonversestudios01 loki also kinda fucked up premise of the multiverse because now because of loki there is an infinite multiverse and infinite timelines and it gets confusing
The first half of Wandavision had me so excited for something new. If was so inventive and fresh - the first time they actually explored her real powers lol. And then it just became Avengers 14
The last three episodes were depressingly terrible. You couldn’t have wanda being confronted by her past WITHOUT THE WEIRD WITCHY SUBPLOT??? i mean CMON. It felt like an afterthought to even ME. And then there were two visions and sterotypical badass afro lady now has-superpowers? Ok sure why not-? They had something incredibly refreshing going and then what was that ENDING?!
Did you know that for Loki they hired writer who literally hates Loki and didnt even remember correctly the events of the first Thor movie? And director who before the show directed like 1 project? And as female lead, the female Loki, they hired actress who wasnt even a fan of Loki and didnt even remember the Thor movies properly when she got the job?
Every time I see a director with very little experience hired to direct a big tentpole film, the first thing that comes into my mind is..."The studio is hiring this person because they want a puppet who won't push back on whatever crap corporate tries to shovel into the film."
I feel you there...i noticed they started pulling a lot of writers with literally almost no real writing credits (see she-hulk and Dr. Strange 2) and giving them big tentpole movies to write for. They have been pulling from the rick and morty pool alot lately. While i like the show not all of the writers are capable outside of that room apparently and some are living off the fame of one literal episode (Ms. Gao). Shits crazy.
What we’re seeing especially with Marvel is the pendulum effect happening in real time. The harder and more ridiculous they are with pushing “the message” the harder you’re seeing people push back, and just simply tune out, and give up on the MCU. It’s extremely gratifying to see people finally waking up. It took way too long, but the fact is happening makes me very happy..
To a degree. But I'm not sure if that would be true if all of these other problems weren't present. Well, you could argue it's impossible to make anything good and also woke, and I sympathize with that perspective, but replacing all the legacy characters and being woke might work if they had a good story to tell and directors who knew how to handle the size of the project while keeping their own egos in check.
Yeah I've seen myself doing this. I went into Dr. Strange 2 and Thor four hyped and left disappointed, so now I just skip marvel movies unless they seem really good. Like the only upcoming project I give a damn about is Guardians 3. I knew that Black Panther 2 would be preachy and shit, so I saved my money and was right. Watched one episode of She-Hulk and noped the fuck out of there.
@@BWMagus that would require story and character to be the focus of the films while having a next big threat undertone linking in the background. But instead they want to focus on "other things" and if they can show horn in a plot and some characters they'll worry about that later. Also the focus on "humour" where that word has lost all meaning and jokes landing is optional over simply making "jokes", they are there and constant because they are, not because certain characters are funny or unserious, it's just there, always, for everyone. It kills the tone if people can be being murdered in one scene and it's laughed off in the next. Levity is a great thing, it can relieve tension and show personality, but when it's ubiquitous it serves no purpose.
I haven't seen a single phase 4 marvel movie. Before, I would always go to the theater to see a new marvel movie and that culminated with Infinity war and endgame
@@pyropulseIXXI it was a natural stopping point. It had all built up to this, heros were sacrificed, big bad was done. It was an ending. Plus they set up their streaming service and needed anchor content to make people pay for it otherwise it wouldn't have got off the floor...
For a couple years now, I've been describing my relationship to the MCU as an abusive one. When we started out, everything was great! They were consistently doing good things and we were happy. Then there were a couple stumblings, but I was willing to forgive them because there was still more good than bad. Then they started to hurt me and I was having to make a proactive effort to forgive them because I still remembered how good they used to be. Nowadays, the MCU and I are undergoing trial separation, I check up on them every now and again but I don't see them in person.

Is it just me or the first few year sucked hard too. I liked the captain america movies, the first iron man, but the rest was very mediocre. I actually liked the infinity war, ragnarok and guardians of the galaxy too, but the rest was very forgettable. I can't say that I am a big fan of phase 4 but I also can't say that any Marvel movies were great. They are entertaining and fun to watch, but none of them are great movies. I feel like the peoples saying they were great movies probably saw them as kids. The only marvel projects that were actually great in my opinion are Daredevil and the first season of Jessica Jones and both were not in the MCU.
@@bulleyes9059 Yeah didnt get this notion either. Thor 1, Thor 2, IM 2, IM 3, IHulk, CptMarvel, SpiderMan HC, Avengers 2, all mediocre movies. Even Doctor Strange missed huge opportunities with its titular character.
Stan lee got sick of the old media that was making political comics and entertainment with the message "hitler bad" . went out on his own to create a comic himself and thus lead to the massive juggernaut marvel is today. Now, history really repeats itself from the same thing but in the form of mainstream media with their message. The only thing that people need to do is literally do the same thing stan did then, make your own.
Exactly right, Drinker. I’m not a hard core Marvel fan but I grew-up reading the comics and watching the movies . Phase 4, has totally been a horrible disappointment. There were a few things good and a lot bad. The identity politics alone are enough to make you puke. Which, is made ten times worse when the actors start talking in interviews. I’ve lost count of the shows I skip because some actor starts spewing woke garbage about the production. It’s sad watching these types of people destroy beloved properties. Don’t pay to watch, don’t ignore when they insult our people and culture, and stand-up for what is right.
Honestly, from the actor interviews I'm surprised many of the shows are not many times worse. Both 'Andor' and 'House of the Dragon' were marketed in interviews as being explicitly anti-Trump, but people who watch them tell me that there isn't even a hint of that in either show.
@@HerculesBallsInc And that you can thank the directors for. But once the director is an activist before artist and heavily biased, their work turns to shit.

A lot of us were just done with the MCU with the release of Endgame. My emotional investment reached its peak, it was well rewarded, and I was fine going on with the rest of my life without Marvel stringing me along. Phase 4 could have been masterfully implemented, and I was still done and ready for greener pastures.
Understandable - and I think Disney have no clue that is what happens. I mean, the general vibe of the staff within the company, the management; it's basically a cult. A cult for people who never grow tired, grow out of it, or grow up. They have no concept of relativity - i.e. those kids who loved their Marvel films? Well, they now have jobs, or final year exams, or kids, pay taxes, pay rent or mortgages - they aren't going ti be able to stick around a lot of the time - especially if they aren't wanted or valued by the company. Those who were watching in the older age ranges, those with settled lives and disposable income are often into 2 kids, mortgage, rent, new job, maybe a divorce, illness and infirmity of parents, and so on. They can't stay "Disney adults" - most of the Disney employees are, it seems, and they singularly fail to realise that most of the world just really isn't like that and have failed to plan accordingly. What they are producing isn't appealing (by viewer percentages) to the younger ages, and they lost and willingly dismissed the audiences they had. People aren't going to get a babysitter, or pay to drive/travel to watch, or skip a rent payment to buy tickets for; TV, cinema, parks and merchandise of such low quality.
@@OsellaSquadraCorse It's depressing to think about how much time has gone by, but you're absolutely right. That's the audience who's likely to be nostalgic over the MCU, and I don't think Disney realizes it.
Oh, hell, someone really wanted romance between Wednesday and Enid? Their friendship was one of the best parts of the show! We need more wholesome non-romantic relationships on screen!
One thing I've noticed in any sort of media these days, is that people aren't allowed to be friends anymore The only type of relationships allowed now are romantic or family
Yeah, I’m a gay guy, and I am glad I have non romantic guy friends, and portraying platonic relationships (heterosexual or homosexual) onscreen could help promote them in real life. In some ways, taking your cues from movies and such is silly, but movies/TV have always had an effect on our culture, though perhaps less now than in the past.
It would be a lot healthier of a message to state that you don't need to constantly be in a romantic relationship to be happy. Imo this is a pitfall that even good shows fall into always thinking that there has to a hamfisted romance rather than a natural friendship and that its the only way to be truly happy in life.
i agree with most of this stuff, but i genuinely enjoyed loki. it was a perfect way to introduce kang imo and i loved it. season 2 comes out this year and im excited.
I too enjoyed Loki, but tbh, I'm pretty sure it's all because of Tom Hiddleston. Loki is the character we know and love because he has an incredible actor portraying him. It was hard to get behind all the decisions the writers and directors made, but the actor made them bearable. Add Owen Wilson as a great opposite to him, and it was a lot a fun despite its failings. But when you pull it apart, it really doesn't make all that much sense. The Loki who'd been humbled by the loss of his mother and the destruction of his homeland died. The Loki who came to the TVA was a much earlier version who would never have picked up the emotional baggage of his dead counterpart from a few holo vids. He would've kept up his lying, trickster ways without a thought to helping anyone but himself. And don’t get me started on the weird relationship between him and Sylvie.
This is a well done and comprehensive retrospective of phase four's failure. I will never forgive what they did to the Taskmaster, She-Hulk, or Moon Knight.
The fact that I absolutely forgot about Moon Knight says a lot. It's not even 1 year old and if you didn't mention it, I wouldn't have thought of this show ever again. Like many other movies/shows they've done recently. Bland generic CGI heavy shows with no substance.
I legit forgot taskmaster existed until the image flashed up in the video. I'd more or less forgotten Moon Knight too, though that wasn't as bad as most of the TV shows. The 23 films over 10 years Vs 15 products in 2 is the key argument for me though. They're trying to bleed it dry and make every available penny while it's hot and in doing so they are killing what could have been a pay day for years.
I dont know what their deal was. It would be so easy to make Annihilus awaken in the Negative Zone in the Multiverse after the events of Endgame. Then they would just bring on new heros like the Sentry, Nova, the Fantastic Four to ad to the old ones. Then they'd have an incoming Annihilation Wave invasion and they would go asking for help throughout the galaxy, introducing new heros and races. Then a massive fight in the end would have Annihilus die and his lose the Cosmic Rod, to be picked up by Dr. Doom, introducing the third next big villain. It seems so easy, that i dont really understand how they didnt think of it.
Because the other part of hollywood in modern era is......when your busy with jamming identity politics into everything it must be a reiteration of the old to show how much "better" it is with it. You can do new stuff because no one will know how much "better" it was with it, that and no one will come to see new properties with identity politics because its new and unknown.
It was very recently revealed why. Marvel executives *admitted* on camera that anytime someone was being interviewed, someone who said they were fans of the comics was an immediate red flag. Because why would Disney want to make a project by fans, for fans--adapted for a general audience to enjoy? Too much money to be made with that route, I guess.
Sometimes, often perhaps, the best person for the job doesn't occupy the position. You should have been in the job to make the Phase IV decision; and guess what? You're at least somewhat of a fan of the source material. The same mistake was made with Star Wars. Instead of getting in someone (like me) who loved the source material (of the original trilogy), someone (like me) who knew that the fans desperately wanted to see Mark Hamill finally get the chance to play Luke Skywalker having adventures as a fully fledged jedi knight (and an especially powerful one at that) and knew how to progress with the franchise by facing the obvious task of finding new potential jedi from the most distant galaxies in the universe to re-establish the jedi order and contain the utter chaos that resulted from the fall of the Emperor (but not the fall of the entire Empire), they gave the job to someone with literally no relevant qualifications. It's such a shame.
Sentry: Powerful straight white male. Can't have that. Nova: Powerful straight white male. Can't have that. Fantastic Four: three straight white males and one straight white female. Can't have that. Sentry would need to be gay and easily bodied by Captain Marvel (though honestly Sentry sucks anyway). Nova would have to be black and Captain Marvel's dorky sidekick. The Fantastic Four need to have one Asian, one Latino, one black guy, and the other needs to be gay. Not Johnny, the "flaming" jokes would be too obvious. Probably Ben. Also Sue is now the brilliant scientist, Reed is at best a sitcom husband. The X-Men can't exist because "men" is problematic. They'll call them the X-Them. Isn't Iceman gay now? He's in. Angel? They'll say he's bi but yeah, not really. The movie is all about Storm and Wolverine is recast with a black guy and if you object you're racist. Gambit was suave and charming in the comics, so now he's the comic relief that the female characters make fun of. Cyclops can remain a straight white guy because he's bland as wet toast and nobody likes him anyway. Jubilee has a prominent role so they can sell it to China. She easily beats up Magneto. Also Mystique was really a man who decided he liked being female better. There you go, welcome to the new MCU!
That Wednesday thing! I was telling my American friends that my great grandma spent her final ten years with her childhood friend. They cared about each other and even loved her but it was NOT romantic. The fact that one immediately said "ah of course. They French kissed like sisters" made me creep out cuz how can your mind jump to something sexual about THAT?
And then people wonder why they don't have great friendships like their forefather and foremothers. Why nobody has a Frodo and Sam friendship in their life.
@@jager3090 Oh, yes. And that s sort of my point. To that sort of person any friendship that crosses past superficiality can truly be platonic. A person can t have deep feelings for someone in their life, can't love anyone besides maybe direct blood relatives without it being a romantic, and probably sexual thing. And that s a little sad since humans are capable of such intense love for so many people, and none of it it necessarily romantic or sexual. I personally think Frodo and Sam's relationship being romantic frankly cheapens it. It makes it so much flatter and uninteresting. What makes it beautiful is that the loyalty, trust, and affection between them is pure, true friendship. And that it exists because they mutually chose to grow it and maintain it.
@@rachelclark6393 Frodo and Sam are literally modelled after WWI soldiers who have gone through hell in the trenches together and form a bond few civilians will ever understand.
Same that’s the only point I disagreed with him, Shang Chi was actually good. Only part that annoyed me was Shang Chi’s girlfriend (forgot her name lol) was kinda cringe at times 😂
Eh. That movie was disappointing for me. It was marketed as a martial arts movie and had little to no martial arts. The constant flashbacks was agitating and the ending CG large scale battle was cringy.
That scene in Endgame where Cap wields Mjolnir is one of the greatest moments of my cinema going life. Hundreds of people collectively cheered at that single moment, myself included. That's what Marvel should be. Sadly, that's not what it is anymore.
I was even there for the premiere in my local theater and when that scene happened my theater clapped and cheered, and I was completely mind blown that was even gonna happen, although there was that little tease in Age of Ultron and it came full circle. You don’t get that anymore in Phase 4
The audience I was with did the exact same thing on opening night, however, I think they cheered even louder when Thanos punch Captain Marvel with the power stone.
During 2019 after I watched Avengers Endgame in the cinema, I remember being super hyped for Phase 4 and would watch countless theory videos on who would be the next big bad of the MCU, who they would introduce next etc. After watching some of Phase 4, I wish that I could go back to that time because the hype I felt for the product was infinitely better than the product itself.
I have no real interest in future Marvel movies. I may see GotG 3,but I won't be in a hurry to see it. I will wait to hear what people say about it first.
Thanks for being so vocal about those issues. As a film lover it's just painful watching how Disney swallows everything, turning it into shit in the process.
as a film lover it is amazing how much shit you guys give disney for bad movies when all they did was pretty much greenlight projects. you hold no accountability to bad direction, writing or acting. you just blame disney... and forget about the tons of classics they have given, forget about the good marvel movies they made, and even good new stuff they had like mandalorian and Andor. you people are all the same. you blame them for everything and and give them credit for nothing even when in both cases it is not all on the company "disneys" fault
I held on to my DisneyPlus account with the optimistic hope like a parent looking at their teenage child thinking, “it’s just a short phase they will figure it out” . Nope,I was wrong I’m done with Disney. Drinker you were right good on you for seeing past the smoke and mirrors.
I think it's a big ship to turn around, especially when each movie supports the story of the next one. It feels like the success of Andor has shown Disney the true path, but it will take time to unclog the pipes.
Cancelled mine too! Even though it's only a few dollars more when bundled with Hulu it's the only way to really say you're unsatisfied. Everyone who continues to pay bc it's bundled or any reason is just contributing to the garage pile of Disney+
I think Disney+ is the reason why the MCU is garbage right now. Like Drinker said about quantity over quality. There has to be a reason to keep Disney+ and one way to ensure that is that there will be a new release coming up. How many have kept accounts because there is a new Marvel property coming up soon. We get that property and it sucks but a huge amount of people have already been suckered into keeping Disney+. I got rid of mine a long time ago as I realized that the new stuff was bland at best.
You are spot on with the characters being replaced by someone younger with the exact same skill set. I grew up watching iron man and captain America. My favorite ever. And for them to just ge replaced with someone is so cringe and hurts.

Amazing commentary as always!! I really wish you keep talking about these same issues on other popular 'used to be amazing' shows. Like B99 for example, the character 'Ross' was one of the vital and loveable one, but suddenly the writers shifted and completely ruined her character by making her fall in love with a guy, she wants to marry the guy, she breaks up with him right when he is trying to propose to her, suddenly comes out as bi, sees several women, leaves the agency....and so on i mean they could have delivered the same things very subtly but they ruined that character with absurdity. Also Keely from Ted Lasso in the latest season i mean wtffffffff!!!!
The Black Panther mantle is to be earned in trial by combat. Shuri in the movie version MCU never trained in high level combat. Her fail body would shatter no matter what suit she was wearing. Marvel is failing to tell the proper stories. They can create whatever reality they want. We can reject just as easily
Also, the entire plot of the first Black Panther movie is literally about the villain calling out Wakanda's hypocrisy of being selfish while the rest of the African sub-continent suffered.
And also in their defense, Black panther was introduced in phase 3, had 1 solo film, 3 other film appearances, and had the actor not retire but tragically die from cancer.
For me, Endgame was the finish line and I am happy to keep it that way. Hollywood used to know how to entertain so I often find a bit of pleasure in watching classics like Back to the Future, Jurassic Park or Coming to America...
I feel endgame was the end and then far from home was an epilogue to the story in a way, to see the affects of endgame. I haven't even watched an MCU film since. Obviously it would never happen because they want to make more money, but if they ended it at phase 3 I would consider one of the best movie franchises.
@@byronsenior6499 yea, No Way Home is pretty much a direct sequel to Far From Home, with the movie starting right where the after end credits scene left.
Another thing was that some movies that were underrated back then are now classics that shows how painful the present schlock is. One film, "The Hunted," was a brilliant film with a manhunt for a former soldier gone insane from his wartime experiences being chased by not only the FBI and agents of the military, but also his former mentor. It was a deep, emotional Frankenstein style story which had the creator (Tommy Lee Jones) not be directly rejecting his creation (Benicio del Toro), as in the original Mary Shelley storyline, but rather by not answering his creation's written appeals to him for guidance in trying to find his humanity. And it is up to the viewer to realize the potent truth that the reason for such a lack of communication between the two characters is because the tracker/creator was filled with enormous guilt over his role in turning a once good man into a ruthless killing machine.
Phase 4 felt like a movie franchise starting out and trying things to see if they worked. You wouldn't expect a post Endgame Phase to feel like a startup franchise

About point 4: that IS something that has happened time and time again in comics, so I can understand why they tried. The issue is that evenin the comics, it almost never sticks (unless the original character is someone obscure the audience doesn’t care about, like the original Captain Marvel). The replacement sticks around for a few years, and then the original inevitably returns. The only exceptions are for some reason DC characters - Green Lantern, Robin and the Flash - but those titles were established as not belonging to a single person decades ago, and crucially the replacements are usually not that different from the original. And even in those cases nostalgia often wins out and you end up with a whole corps of Green Lanterns all active at the same time.
Agreed. My husband being one. He gets irritated when I don’t want to watch the latest Marvel pile or I criticize the one he cajoles me in to watching with him.

So refreshing for you to call out Chloe Zhao. She took her popularity by filming where I grew up and then headed out. She could've hired the people she worked with here to gain more recognition in hollywood. But nope, decided she took the fame and somehow ended up directing The Eternals. I'm guessing she will come right back and work with her "crew" and regain that popularity again 🤦♂
She didn't get to say very much on who and what was done. Disney/Marvel just used her as a figurehead so they could get some headlines. She admitted how little she actually got to contribute on the film in an interview with NPR
I mean, I don't think she's obligated to bring them with her. It's nice if she does. But at the end of the day it's a job. If she feels like getting new people as a boss that's not really douchie or anything, it's just business.
8:57 To be honest, I'd have liked to see Bucky take up the shield, because there was a ton of evidence throughout his run that indicated that he would be the next Captain America, but that was unfortunately tossed aside for the sake of identity politics that felt hamfisted and unearned.

The lack of direction was really the most frustrating thing for me. It’s not like there wasn’t potential for after Endgame. I was intrigued by some of the things Wandavision did with exploring the aftermath of those lost in the fight against Thanos, the aftermath of the snap’s reversal, and the showing of heroes wondering what to do now that those like Iron Man and Black Widow are gone and the difficulty of picking up where they left off and struggling doing so. The scene of Wanda losing her shit because of the grief of losing Vision is easily my favorite thing since Endgame. It was an appropriate thing to explore further and it was done in a very powerful manner. Yeah they definitely lost it at the end but the potential was absolutely there. There was a lot that they could have done with those themes in particular but I feel like most of that was gone.
@@catalinamelo9932 Right? They're actually really clever and imaginative. It got me really excited that they were trying something different and it was working until it didn't. The leaders failed to realize a lot of people responded positively to Wandavision was because it was trying something different in an inventive way. It was also exploring a lot of the themes I'd expect such as the ones I listed. The best scene in Wandavision other than their fight is Wanda losing her shit because of going to the spot Vision planned for them to live. It's powerful, effective and an appropriate thing to explore given that she lost Vision. Can we get more scenes like that please?
Agreed, Wanda vision was both entertaining and very interesting. It fit in very well with the post-endgame aftermath, giving a meaningful perspective. And that's what I think gave the overall story that extra depth it needed. I loved the perspective, and how the story unfolded. Plenty of interesting plot twists that actually made sense and kept it very entertaining. It's a bit annoying how they keep sliding in the same random superpower side character, that being Monica Rameau, (the one who stopped the bullets by making them go through her) Just the same character as that girl from multiverse of madness (who can make portals to different realities) or that iron Man knock off from wakanda for ever.
@@shanewright4650 I don't hate Monica as much as everyone else but I do agree that she wasn't as developed as she could have been and was taking away from what was working about Wandavision.
The Multiverse stories would've been a great way to introduce Mutants into the MCU. They did the Prof. X cameo, but that's not near enough. Maybe a few Mutants slipped through the cracks and we could've had a post-credits scene with Rogue stealing Capt. Marvel's powers. A scene where Deadpool gets stopped by Spiderman, or maybe a teaser where Hulk goes to investigate a supposed madman and ends up in a fight with someone near immortal. Basically, the Multiverse opening by Dr. Strange could've led to something that could've been a new direction for the series.
I thought something like that with the thunderbolts, in fact, I thought they could build them individually as villains, you know, the Beetle fights Spider-man, The Fixer fights War Machine, Goliath fights Ant-man and so on, then, at the end of those movies, Zemo comes to collect them and form the masters of evil, they get to siege avengers mansion, lose and goes to the fridge for phase 6, and only then, they return as the Thunderbolts.
Damn, The Drinker has really gotten better. Leaned more into the intelligent dissection of media WITH comedic inserts that helps drive the point and break up the seriousness of the information being presented. I'm here for it
If they wanted to bring in new characters to replace captain America and stuff; they really should have done origin stories for them so that they earned their position, or at least started to before picking up the mantel. For instance brining in the new person in the way they brought Ant Man into his role would have been perfect.
No one seems to notice it but Hank Pym not being Ant Man is a horrible message. "If you make one mistake during a psychotic episode you can never live it down and are a horrible piece of shit forever!" Then the same people who say that will talk about the importance of mental health. It's ridiculous. Ant Man is the only mantle passing in the Marvel Comics that I can think of that was actually successful. DC has pulled off 3. Sure, the *name* of Captain America was passed down but when people say "Captain America" they're talking about Steve Rogers, not Sam Wilson. That's nothing against Sam Wilson either. I like him as a character but he's The Falcon, not Captain America.
I'm not sure I can ever move past the euphoria of Thor arriving in Wakanda. I went to the cinema with a group of mates and that moment is simply electrifying. Good luck making another movie with those sort of stakes.
@@Eli-cs4tk wether you call it bad or good is up to you. But you can't deny the first time you watch this in theatres with your friends, it creates a feeling no Marvel film has produced. Also, "based on nostalgia" is a very weak and dumb excuse to pick on a movie.
@@dottir_ I agree with both of you. Yes, when Toby drops in NWH, that scene meant a lot to me. That scene was top tier amazing for me in the theatre. I was literally screaming in joy along with everyone else. The 2001 Spider Man was the first super hero movie I ever watched, AND it was in the movies. BUT the fact that it's a nostalgia bait cheapens it ever so slightly. I think you're both right. Like, lets say in 20 years that they bring back every original avenger that they can somehow for a movie. Honestly, I didn't hate Shang Chi. The movie atleast knew how story and conflict work. The arc with his dad was not bad and the way it ended was niceish. I think I liked it because, I expected them to do an exposition flashback, but they sort of spread it out to make it less annoying and some what kept me engaged
Well yes, but I expect a company with a history of 100 years that housed some of the most creative people in the history of entertainment to get the basics of storytelling right. That can't be the bar.
I really really enjoyed the first two acts (when it was more about kung fu)...but I almost fell asleep during the 3rd act haha Too much CGI and the martial art aspect pretty much gone too because of the rings. It started great though!
Mainly... it wasn't finished and polished. I liked all the actors. There were minor things I disliked about it but mainly it just felt like a 2nd or 3rd draft, the CGI was rushed and the pallet inky black (which is *not* good for Shang Chi which should have been more like a guardians of the galaxy pallette). But *low* quality. Low low low low quality. I know covid was part of that. But they should have taken more time to do it right.
Even if you take out the politics, there is still the problem of these projects are now run by the very people who would've made fun of us in school for liking this stuff. They don't care about the source material, they care about what they can do with it. You got people working on these projects saying things like "does there really need to be a villain?" If you would've told me like 15 years ago that eventually superhero shows and movies will come out almost every other month, I would've been hyped as fuck, now it feels like the result of a genie's wish. " You wished for superheros to be big and popular but you never specified they'd always be GOOD or made by people that care about them"
So counter discussion. You say that they don't care about source material, but the idiot (critical drinker) admonishes them for 1) Falcon becoming Cpt. America 2) the intro of Iron Heart 3) She-Hulk breaking the 4th wall. Isn't that all source material? Not everything is great, but as time goes on you have to introduce new people, and let's be honest, for what Disney/Marvel owned you can have so many stories that are great. Hell Thor 2 and Iron Man 3 still rank as 2 of my lowest movies, but so do Eternals and Shang-Chi. What I'm getting at is let this phase introduce characters most people aren't familiar with, it will eventually pay off like it did before. Maybe I am a hopeful optimist, but I'm a realist. These movies will endure another 20-30 movies and we will all be there to watch.
Oh, there is so much "content" in production that it almost feels like they want to double the total amount of entertainment that has ever existed in just a couple of decades. Look at seasonal anime for example, I remember reading about the overproduction problems, that they are so desperate to hire much needed animators to keep up with the demand that you can update your twitter bio and they will contact you. I can't find a source but I also remember hearing that half of the total anime currently existing was made after 2010? Something like that, there are like 50 shows each season, and maybe 5 of them are going to be remembered. The ratio of "forgettable" and "outstanding" remains the same at least.
As we know now from interviews, many of them are hired BECAUSE they don't like superheros so they won't object when the director or the writer wants to do something completely different.
@@chrisholmes4037 Just because it happened in comics doesn't equal good. All New All different Marvel, which is where those stories happened, FAILED. Now its failing in the MCU cause they didn't bother to pay attention, Nowhere did I say that the source material is 100 percent great and deserves to be adapted. If you cared about the source material you would know that. You speak for yourself with the "we'll all be there to watch". We dont all operate on the communistic "shut up and consume" mentality. I actually value my time and my money. One more day made me stop buying modern Spider-Man books for like 15 years. Dr.Strange 2 was the last MCU thing I watched, after that I havent bothered with anything else.
My problem with ironheart has to do with spiderman. Because a big theme of homecoming was that he wanted to be like iron man and then in ffh he felt like he couldn't take over and there was the amazingg scene of happy and Peter talking where he says you're never gonna be iron man no one could be iron yet they now are making ironheart
Also as if everyone in the team got their own female version. I wish I wasn't joking but its pretty true lol. Think even spiderman is getting one soon too xD
@@alakazamhippity3192 Nope just lazy. There's lots of great female characters in comic but they specifically gender bended popular ones with an established fan base lol
@@NinjapowerMS idk about Spiderman. Peter Parker is still like 19 or 20 or something all replaced characters are either old or dead so unless they kill off peter parker they wouldn't gender swap him. Atleast I hope so

Like the original poster said no one can replace Iron man, etc. It's even more devious considering they have an ulterior motive with gender bending said characters. ALSO it's usually a hell of a lot cheaper too, so you get a lot more bang for your bucks.
Something I don't think many people talk about is all of this wokeness has seriously damaged the on screen presence of all those groups they say they're helping, you know, everyone except for straight whtie dudes. What I mean is if I saw a black character that was whtie in another rendition like on a comic book or older movie or a gay character I'd either think "Oh, that's neat" or not even give it any thought and just go on enjoying the film. Now though when I see that I'm thinking "Aw damnit, here we go again" and I think that's what alot of people do now. When I was a kid in the 80s and I'd be watching one of the two Star Wars films with Lando I wasn't thinking "Wow. A black guy." I was thinking "Hey, that's Lando." Films didn't have to draw all this attention to the fact they've got someone who isn't white, straight and male in the movie. Put whoever you want in a movie, but this isn't the 20s. You're not doing shit by your casting decisions because nobody is marginalizing these groups you say are marginalized.
But Lando wasn't a leading character in the Star Wars movies back in the 80s. We never followed his back story of how he got where he was. There wasn't a Lando solo movie. The main Star Wars leads at that time were white, straight, and mostly male (with exception of straight white leia) but it was predominately Luke's story over the course of the three films. Even though Vader was voiced by a black man, guess who's face we saw on screen when it was reveal? A white man. Look at the majority of Marvel movies - mostly straight white male leads for several phases. Kevin Feige stated he had to fight for years to make movies with diverse leads until Disney promoted him. Both Black Panther and Shang-Chi were originally planned to have their own solos in the MCU long before Iron Man was even in the picture. Yet the Black Panther solo didn't come till over a decade later and Shang-Chi longer than that. Marvel's first female led MCU Movie didn't happen until after 21 movies. We know from leaked emails that there was skepticism in the past about whether these films could do well in box office revenue, which was reflective of the attitudes toward these groups in terms of value they could bring. So in regard to Hollywood representation (like lead roles) yeah...they were marginalized. The point being: Attention will always be drawn to the leads of a movie or franchise. So people are gonna know when the leads aren't straight or white or predominately male because....not having many diverse lead characters IS the way its mostly been.
@@tyrchtemph1881 Most of this is moot because Star Wars was always about Luke and the Force. The side characters being great were a bonus, you act as if Lando wasn't well liked or popular when he was. How much did we learn about any of the side characters? Not much. It's not like there was anymore focus on them, we even got to see a redemption arc for Lando who leads the Rebellion along with Akbar to attack the death star. Lando even was piloting the Falcon. As for your complaints about "white straight men" , well I hate to break it to you but the largest consumer of these products were white straight males, who live in an area that's majority white. Shocking. I know. It's crazy why they'd pick a demographic that would be the most likely to buy into or appreciate the story at hand. It's like people think it's some grand conspiracy when the reality is, it's mostly marketing. It's not like we don't have products aimed at black people or Asians etc. Nobody would care if they put out more non-white characters or women. Yet when those characters are stereotypes of the worst kind, wrapped up in preachy ideologies or made to be insufferable, people check out. Tearing down your core demographic or anyone in general to try and build others never works.
I agree. I'm sick and tired of seeing characters being race and gender swapped, even if it's not the main character. There is no need because the comic books are full of diversity and inclusion. Just follow them, I don't get what the big deal is? Also, I think it's horrible to change an already established character just because you want to be inclusive, what about the original creator, that's being disrespectful to them.
This is very revealing and interesting. It's a confession on how when you growing up non-white, or gay characters were so rare that it would suprise you. Oh my god a black character, a gay character! But you never questioned the overwhelming amount of white casts or the generic white male lead role or their qualification and ability to do the job. But now because perhaps the default white male option isn't used as much as before you question the suitability of qualification of everyone who is non-white in movies. It shows how ethno-centric your world view is. Considering the optimal cinema and screen presence (70s and 80s) as optimal just exposes your biases and reflection of the culture and people you want to see on screen.

I had an amazing experience related to modern Hollywood recently. I walked by a Redbox and realized I didn't recognize any of the offerings. I'm so out of touch with the absolute sewer dung that's being crapped out that I have no idea what any of it is. The last "new" release that I've seen is Joker. And, most likely, it will be that way for the rest if my life. Luckily, I still have the great movies I grew up watching like Big Trouble in Little China, War Games, Breakfast Club, etc... And my children are now experiencing those movies for the first time and they've enjoyed them more than the modern cookie cutter movies written by talentless activists.
Give independent artists and creators a chance. Even TCD has written his own books, and so have I. 🙂 Mine are titled "Diamond Dragons". The biggest problem is that rich narcissists with no talent or experience have control of what people will see. But the poor creators who have actually done the WORK over the years are constantly ignored. 🐲✨🐲✨🐲✨
Doubt that it's you're out of touch. Mroe like many films didn't get the marketing needed due to covid and shit. Films being made during covid should are stjll coming out and those released during covid, didn't get much fare due to more important stuff going on to care.
You will never again watch a new movie? I mean, you do you but there are still plenty of decent movies coming out... But in terms of 'superhero' movies, yes I'm with you, we've been there and we've done that. We've upped the stakes until they were so big literally anything could happen and nothing had meaning anymore. Time to move on. Joker was an ok movie but if it weren't for Joaquin Phoenix, that movie would have been just 'meh' and I believe that it could have been a way better movie if it wasn't set in the batman universe. I liked Joaquin's 'You were never really here' much much more because it's world building felt more real.
Phase 4 was definitely far from a perfect phase, but the hype train leading up to No Way Home and the film's release was absolutely amazing. Seeing everyone so excited about the idea of the three live-action Spider-Men unite against classic villains...I remember the cinema being absolutely packed on the first night, people dressing up as Spidey and all. Great times...took me right back to the Infinity War hype
@@onesaucynougat7471 It's not just nostalgia bait, I'm sick of hearing this. It used Tobey and Andrew to complete Tom's arc from the last two movies. It also kept the Spidey's and their villains consistent and improved on them in some ways. Yeah it had nostalgia, but that's not all it was.
I think one of the things that can’t be overstated is how phase 4 had no actual goal. It just kinda meandered around with no common link between projects. There was clearly no goal made when planning this phase and the entire franchise suffers. But hey I said I was bailing on the franchise after endgame cause I saw the writing on the wall and I’m all happy for that
Exactly. People didn't watch phase 1 as much. Only after civil war, it became good. Ever since Avengers, Thanos was teased and people felt like that's goings to end up somewhere. There's no such thing in phase 4 (only the he who remains who teased some threat in Loki) After antman 3, he doesn't feel much of a threat either. Also, most of the Avengers now are simply unlikeable.

that one scene where Riri tried to recreate the same flight test as Tony's mark 2 so effortlessly, even magically made the icing problem disappear, my heart was crushed, that ironman scene was vandalized by some "genius teenager" who can do it effortlessly without any notable effort at all compared to Tony who literally had to test it with many, many trials and errors, literally undermining his legacy by making it something that can easily be replicated by a girl not even a third his age, even already advancing to energy repulsor tech in the first armor
Did you expect anything different from the diverse female protagonist?
They did the same thing with shuri years before that when she made stark and banner look like complete idiots (despite their whole shtick being that they are geniuses AND they had more experience with the technology).
@@looinrims let's forget about diversity and stuff because "modern producers" will always do that shit to the point it's best to simply ignore it and actually talk about the actual problem of Riri's character development, at the very least ,I expected her to do that armor making thing AFTER she reached wakanda or something, not before those wakandan found her, like holy shit man, it's seriously baffling how she can make arc reactor that's much more efficient with scraps she found in some household junkyard, even tony and yinsen had to use extremely rare part from stark's super high tech missile, which is not even strong enough to fly mark 1 for more than few minutes and she effortlessly created something strong enough to fly for a prolonged period of time and even be able to shoot repulsor rays at her first makeshift ironman suit project
I'm actually fine with her as a diverse ironman-ish female protagonist with a simple fix of her having actual development and connection as to why she is eligible to be ironheart, like for example, tony saved her and her family in the past, she got motivated, developing some smaller gadgets first, slowly building up her repertoire until somehow she tried to help others using her gadgets, getting some connections from some people she saved and getting supports in building even more advance gadgets to the point Shuri somehow caught wind of her technological prowess, secretly helping her with various knowledges and parts, and then finally got into making her first flying suit and AI system, let's see.....a single movie about her before wakanda forever should at least be sufficient introduction instead of simply introducing her outta nowhere already advancing to repulsor beam and efficient flying suit techs
TLDR, yes, I actually expected something a wee bit better and got surprised at how much lower the producer can stoop just to introduce ironheart
What's really frustrating about the Wakanda thing is that then hoarding resources and standing by as bad things happen was actually addressed in the original. It was a large part of Killmonger's motivation. So they had some self awareness originally, but now they've regressed.
This comment should be pinned.
What's really frustrating about the Wakanda thing is the writers don't seem to understand how isolationist cultures work. Never, throughout history has an isolationist culture become advanced. Wakanda had ships and buses more advanced than any other nation and similar to gechiles Thanos had and in GOG. @@matane2465 wakanda isn’t a real society, it is not designed to operate as such. That being said there is leadway especially since wakanda is extremely powerful in the comics. The writers are simply trying to portay the nation of wakanda in a realistic way relative to its state in the comics.

A part of what killed it for me was definitely Marvel's new obsession with "strong female" leads. They way they characterise their heroines now just pisses me off: "I suffered more than man, so I'm more deserving of respect!! I'm always much smarter than anyone else in the room!! I use force if man don't listen to me!!" Just UGHHH... That doesn't make me wanna root for them, this makes me want to punch them to stop being so obnoxious
This is the peak of the mountain"
I'm disappointed that I was right
P. S. RIP Jason David Frank
Well you can’t possibly have a bigger battle with more at stake. Then we’re supposed to forget all that and be grateful for much less at the same price.
They forgot to bring their snowboard for the ride down so now we’re hiking back with them
Honestly Endgame wasn't even the peak. Infinity War was considerably better, and the seeds of idpol and other issues the Drinker mentioned in the video were already beginning to grow. Compare the two side-by-side and it becomes more and more apparent.
I knew it was the peak but I didn’t expect it to be a fucking cliff after that
I don't even think Endgame was the peak of the mountain.
Eh. With James Gunn involved, I would've totally watched that.
what could have been...
and now Gunn is gone to DC to try to unfuck it.
Now I'm really upset that we didn't get any of that.
I am actually surprised, considering the villains they've already used, that they didn't angle for some alliance of the Scarlet Witch and Gor and Namor and Galactus and so on--that'd be sort of obvious and dumb, to me, but would have been in line with simplistic Hollywood thinking.
I like to try and pinpoint the exact moment a franchise falls apart.
“They’ll never know what you sacrificed for them.”
And there it is
Agree. There were a few hints in endgame, but that line was what broke my love of marvel.
It was just so...... bad. Like, really, _really_ bad. What's even worse is seeing people defend her actions for her _imaginary,_ _made_ _up_ children. They are no more a reality in that fiction then her in our reality.
For me it was the insanely cringy and cheesy moment in endgame where all the girl bosses United together.

Brilliant analysis, Drinker. I have been a huge comics fan all my life and thought the first phases of the MCU were something special. I have often considered phase 3 to be telling the Infinity Saga from the Avengers' point of view, where the belief in life is affirmed and that the universe deserves a sceond chance, while phase 4 better articulates Thanos' argument, showing how the continuous thriving of life would eventually lead to complete chaos and degeneracy and that it might have been better if things just ended a bit sooner XD

Not to be reminded that I'm a bad person with a sordid past."
Why can't we have those adventures anymore? It seems everything has to be injected with a moral that doesn't match the story/adventure we're trying to escape to and instead of making it seem more real we're just diluting the plot. The cost of this is regressing away from the adventure/escape we all desire to experience.
Problem is movies not motivate anymore, not stimulate imagination and intelect. They are just a drug to give a modern consumer a high for 2 hours.
Exactly!
I choose to believe that mention of Schindler's List is low-key based
We can't have adventurous movies anymore because then we can't be preached to directly on how terrible we are by the elites.
Is funny how Jennifer Lawrence runs her mouth about man and yet the entire reason why she got movie roles is because she was sleeping with the producer.

“Identity politics is the death of entertainment”.
Very well put my friend. Entertainment is supposed to be a reprieve from daily life, not a deeper plunge into the same shut we’re bombarded with daily.
The problem is that those "politics" boil down to "Side A good, Side B bad" and that's propaganda (unless it is about morally wrong things like war)
Politics in media should be something like "Is side A good? Is side B justifiable?" Because then it makes the viewer/reader/player question their own beliefs and can bring some sort of discussion around it, rewarding the player/reader/viewer's intelligence.
@@thinkingboi9508 very well said, thank you
@@thinkingboi9508 That's what made Civil War so good.

"Hey, are you going to clean this mess up?"
"No, that's boring. I'm doing this now."
Yeah the snap would have left power vacuums all over the universe that could have been used to write any number of stories. I think that the infinity stones should be indestructible. Bring in Galactus or something. Now that half the universe is dead he's one hungry boi.

Kill off all the momentum and start from scratch campaigning entirely off of nostalgia. They chose wrong. Now that they're finally trying to build up the next villain, their fan base had diminished, and lost their momentum they worked so hard to get
@@Wahba. Not to mention that every other movie seemed to involve multiversal threats.
I hate the multiverse concept.
They managed to set up the Multiverse as scary and disastrous in Loki, and then completely abandoned it when it mattered most
Larry Niven did a great scifi short story about the multiverse, many decades ago.
He pulls out his pistol
and checks the load
and checks the safety is on
and (this goes on for about 8 lines, slightly differing sentences/
ending the story)
and puts the gun to his head
and pulls the trigger.

Yeah. They needed to at least take a decade long break after Endgame. People are just burnt out on marvel crap now. They milked the cow dry
imo while the last "Spider-Man" was, to a huge degree, just a nostalgia wank, it still was a home run.
Endgame was the beginning of the decline in quality.
Oh, hell, someone really wanted romance between Wednesday and Enid? Their friendship was one of the best parts of the show! We need more wholesome non-romantic relationships on screen!
One thing I've noticed in any sort of media these days, is that people aren't allowed to be friends anymore
The only type of relationships allowed now are romantic or family
these woke ppl are crazy
@@tommymarco To put it mildly
@@bucketofsunshine6366 nah the loki show was fire asf
Don't worry, they'll replace Tom with a black transgender woman next season.
@Julien at least moon knight was decent compared to other mcu shows this year.
I have to agree except for MK, they didnt completely ruin his character unlike Taskmaster or She hulk
They also ruined the Wrecking Crew and the Abomination.

@@rachelclark6393 There are people who would fight you to prove there was something romantic between Sam and Frodo

The Black Panther mantle is to be earned in trial by combat. Shuri in the movie version MCU never trained in high level combat. Her fail body would shatter no matter what suit she was wearing.
Marvel is failing to tell the proper stories. They can create whatever reality they want. We can reject just as easily

Definitely feels like an assembly line more than a living narrative.

Wandavision's first 7 episdoes are criminally underrated.

It was also exploring a lot of the themes I'd expect such as the ones I listed. The best scene in Wandavision other than their fight is Wanda losing her shit because of going to the spot Vision planned for them to live. It's powerful, effective and an appropriate thing to explore given that she lost Vision.

But why do that if you can just have them Poochie their way into the sequel of an established character?!

Thanks to the Drinker for creatively summing up what so many of us are thinking and feeling as well. 🍻
That's a very astute observation.
I’ve generally no interest in anything after End Game, after all enough is enough for goodness sake.
@@NinjapowerMS ahhh women scary noooo 🥲🥲.... Grow up 😭
@@alakazamhippity3192 Nope just lazy.
Atleast I hope so
@@ashrayshetty3914 It's not about them being old or dead. It's about respecting the character. Like the original poster said no one can replace Iron man, etc. It's even more devious considering they have an ulterior motive with gender bending said characters.
Comics has a lot of interesting female and male characters which Guardians of the galaxy as an example and they chose to copy paste the established ones
I think some silver lining to this for me personally is it's forced me to look outwards, outside of Hollywood and see the amazing work of other countries and creators and oh man, did I find a hell of a lot of gems!
there is no connection in marvel like before no shield no avengers coming together to fight one evil big guy just doing weird things in their own and world don't care now government don't give a shit about new powerful beings,no rules no limits infinite powers and plus msheu thing ruined mcu
could you please share some?
thats been the way for a while for me. Stop buying the triple A games, stop watching the hollywood titles, stop listening to the mainstream news, stop following the top of the pops music hits, stop believing anything owned by the main stream because it became a fake & bloated spectacle a long time ago.
Instead seek the alternatives in every walk of entertainment and information. You'll get far less bias, a lot more eye opening experiences and you might even learn something useful and interesting. ALSO it's usually a hell of a lot cheaper too, so you get a lot more bang for your bucks.
same here i started watching french_korean_japanese_spanish movies
if you want a recommendation from me, watch The Grand Budapest Hotel

I've gotta say, I don't always agree with everything that's said, but I appreciate that it gets addressed as part of a rational conversation with specific points, and not overgeneralized ranting with no real point.
Kudos, sir, and thank you for being brave enough to talk about your opinions, and being reasonable enough to discuss them like an adult.
Just wondering: is is hard to explain Life Before Cell Phones to your kids?
Agree on all points. Ive gone from being excited about all the MCU projects to hardly caring. It feels more like a chore to keep up.
It's like the white people are playing background and supporting characters now
Phase 4 was definitely far from a perfect phase, but the hype train leading up to No Way Home and the film's release was absolutely amazing. Seeing everyone so excited about the idea of the three live-action Spider-Men unite against classic villains...I remember the cinema being absolutely packed on the first night, people dressing up as Spidey and all.
Great times...took me right back to the Infinity War hype
LITERALLY the only good Phase 4 movie.
And it was a Sony film, not a Disney film...
@@CorrectionUnknown it was Ok, just nostalgia bait, still a fun movie however
I just wish they had clarified the spell better, some plot holes and forced moments.
There's no such thing in phase 4 (only the he who remains who teased some threat in Loki)
After antman 3, he doesn't feel much of a threat either. Also, most of the Avengers now are simply unlikeable.
