  • Ever wondered how we write some of our riffs? It's often done electronically. This video dissects the components of the intro to the song Sun's Delusion, from our second album Stone's Reach (2009). It includes the chords, melodies and harmonies. What riff should we put up next?

I don't quite understand, you write them on your computer? How does that work? I can't imagine sitting down and thinking "oh hey, an F could go really well after that B!" myself.
Or do you mean you write the melodies playing a synthesiser?

The making of the riffs in "In Parting" would be interesting to see.
By the way, were you thinking of covering any songs for the next album? Or will it just have original songs?

This would make for epic 8bit boss battle music.

Well, this really wasn't anything to do with how the riffs are actually constructed; it was just a vid to show the riff as it sounds when programmed into Reason (or other app). There's no dialogue at all on what the riff is trying to achieve or how anyone came up with the riff, which is largely what I was expecting. Would be good to see this done in more detail really. Thx

every art has a beginning sequence and the final product of that art has nothing to do with that beginning sequence. @Be'lakor by revealing this sequence of your work, people like getting encouraged. This is an answer to "How do these awesome songs appear from nowhere?" or "What is the source of these riffs?" And the answer is hardwork. I'd like to see how Abeyance developed if it's possible :)

Oh wow, interesting to see one of my favourite bands writes (some of) their riffs pretty much the same way I do :P (ModPlug tracker, mostly because it's what I'm used to).
This happens to be my favourite Be'lakor riff too, so I'm not sure what to suggest for the next one hehe. Perhaps By Moon and Star? Absolutely love the main riff in that.

This is why you're awesome! I'm also one for Countless Skies, though I'd love to see how my favorite Held in Hollows came to be. And more generally, if you could explain sort of the steps each idea goes through until it becomes "complete". I'm just starting out in songwriting myself and you guys are a huge inspiration, but I'm having trouble building structure out of a single riff.. and determining when to stop expanding that riff and move on to the next one. Help would sure be appreciated.

Very strange, so you think of a melody in your head and immediately know which notes correspond? Are you some kind of musical genius?!
When I 'write' stuff I usually just improvise and sometimes come across something interesting or something that sounds good, then go from there.
