    That flying garbage bin is a refference to an old Czechoslovakian movie called "Srdečný pozdrav ze zeměkoule" ("Best regards from the Earth") that follows two aliens who pull Dr.Who at the very beggining of the film, and mask their spacecraft as one of those garbage bins.

      It's not a great vid imo, he is intentionally misinterpreting the critique of socialism and saying that we're okay with socialism, but the only thing we don't like are the bolsheviks and the Soviet style communism. Which is an obvious and ideologically motivated lie, as we Czechs and most other Eastern Europeans are opposed to collectivist ideologies in general, as we know that they are inherently authoritarian and destructive.

    The cooking recipes are of course a parody of the post-episode "story" texts in Doom and especially Quake. The ones that rather adorably try to pretend like the game has some kind of plot. They might as well have been replaced with lorem ipsum or something totally arbitrary, so that's what Spytihněv did.

    Im very glad you went into the guys other games, i always feel that covering stuff outside of the main topic is just always helpfull if anything for sake of the historiy, i didnt even know about Legion .
    I think looking into a developers history, singular or not is always important but for small / single developers i feel is makes it more important due to how personal the projects usually are since they can basically at anypoint go ''i am going to reffrence something personal or extremly niche'' which ties into their personality and culture
    And to note how much i love the creator with the creation of Shrot i learned of / discoverd Paranoia II and i LIVE for obscure RTS games and i didnt even know that game existed

      @asteroidrules Місяць тому +4

      It's a good example of why so much media goes for an Eastern European aesthetic to depict oppressive environments. Much like with Nazi Germany the Soviet Empire was an aesthetic that was intentionally designed to be oppressive to people within it.

    • @blackjacka.5097
      @blackjacka.5097 Місяць тому +2

      @asteroidrules Huh? That's moreso due to the neglect and worse conditions during the 80s and after the communist bloc fell. (And in the game seemingly because of the invasion as the video says)
      Brutalist architecture isn't inherently "opressive", unless you somehow think utilitarianism is opressive which sure, that could be a viewpoint.

    • @satanslegacy

    Also, War with the Newts is an insanely good SciFi novel. Yes, we do drink an insane amount of beer. And Hrot has a fuckton of references to various Czechoslovak commie time memes, so many that it is almost imposible to note them all. It is a bit of a reminder of something we Czechs universally share and perhaps do not realise how limited it is. Just how few people in the world get it and how precious and incredible that is.

    3:30 to be fair Quake 1 didn't get OpenGL until post-release (and it wasn't the first hardware renderer for the game either, that was VQuake for the Verite Rendition)
    9:30 I expect that Quake's limited color palette was that it was faster to render in 256 color using lookup tables for shading and transparency (remember, when Quake launched it only had software rendering) rather than a means of saving space

    The HROT demo was one of the most striking demos to burn itself into my brain in the last decade. I just kept playing it over and over. This was before the full release. I'm ashamed of myself for not buying yet, so I'm going to after I finish this vid. It really feels like a classic that came out in the Quake era, and that's unique to modern boomer shooters. Just so good.
    I also remember the incredible Spytihněv Twitter account building my hype for this title to unprecidented heights. It's a shame how the frequency of game releases can completely distract me, causing a gem like this to fall through the cracks. I need a better way to keep track of releases.

    This was a fantastic review.
    It reminded me just how much I love video games. And that's one of the highest praises I can give because I love video games insanely much. And the only other thing that reminds me so well of how much I like video games is playing video games.
    I like how you tried to capture the feel of what the game wants to showcase. Its love for its inspirations and culture.
    Which in turn inspires me to continue making games and showing off the things that I love.
    What I put into games is certainly very different than HROT. I like bright fantastical things a lot more.
    But what you showed of HROT here does remind me of the love for inspirations and makes me strive to look more into things that I like. Those playfull secrets like the model.train are glorious (and I'll probably steal the recipes as rewards thing).
    I think I'll end it like this:
    There's a few books I feel I would REALLY like. So I should get to reading them sometime to find more inspiration on what I do.

    I played all of Hrot, beat it, and loved it. I haven't played all of Prodeus. It's not that it's bad, it's that it didn't keep my interest as much as the deep horror of fighting the mutant creatures in the midst of a Slavic country, drinking wine and eating bags of skim milk to get by moment to moment.
    Getting jumpscared never felt so good.

      yea i didnt mean to come off as a prodeus hater or to make the game look bad, i actually enjoyed it enough to finish it. imo it's overrated but admittedly has some pretty good level design towards the end game. despite not being as flashy as a lot of boomer shooters, hrot's too special and full of character to not be considered one of the best in its genre.

    Great video, I'll have to watch the other ones you've made !
    I had a similar reaction to HROT : no other game made me read Wikipedia articles or hyped me to read a novel (War with the newts looks great) !
    Love from France !

    very accurate description of the game and what makes it great. the visual style is grim and dark and dirty making it very immersive without needing high poly and textures by letting the players brain fill in the blanks . its a game that takes itself seriously in a good way as oppose to the colorful arcady modern games we are getting abundantly . take counter strike 1.6 for example it has a similar art direction even tho it main selling point was the tight controls and innovative gameplay. its visuals were able to match the military atmosphere and were equally iconic in marking the culture of that era.

      This video actually got a _ton_ of views compared to all his other uploads, and it will most likely get way more in the next few days/weeks, since the algorithm seems to have picked it up.

    Fun fact, Karl Capek who wrote War With The Newts is the same guy who coined the term "robot" and the whole concept of a robot revolt in his play RUR. Strongly recommend reading both if you can get your hands on them.
