- Recorded using GarageBand with a sm57 on a g12t-75 speaker
Epiphone les Paul studio with a Duncan distortion in the bridge
Recorded with 4 mono tracks panned 2 left 2 right
That is one of the best metal tones I have ever heard.
what a shitty taste in tone
It seriously is.
I could never flexibly get the high gain tones I was hearing in my head until I got an eq pedal. I happen to have this same boss eq but most will do. Highly recommend.
@@caydespliff181 yeah. I've got the same Boss EQ pedal. It _REALLY_ helped in sculpting out my tones.
And it’s being made with an old ass amp how badass is that
The fact that you did this with not even a mark series is insane
These 50 cals are unbelievably underrated they rip
The tone stack and gain stages are similar to mark series. I have a studio preamp and the layout is very close. If you learn how to dial in those series you can take whatever you want out of them
@@user-xk9zw5hd4f yup pepper keenan used them on down's nola
The secret sauce is the EQ my brother in Christ!
I think a lot of people are forgetting what you're mentioning in the description about being 4 mono tracks. This makes things sound *huge* ...like you have it here. It sounds great. The EQ's are for fine tuning but the multi-tracking is the secret sauce.
Exactly.
4 mono tracks being 4 guitars recorded over each other? i’m new to music
@@martingarricks6209yes and panned left and right for stereo (2 guitars left speaker, 2 on the right)
You can duplicate tracks without having to re record them@@martingarricks6209
That’s one of my favourite sounds …I’m 50 years old and been playing for 35 years and to date that has to be the closest sounding Met sound I have heard on the internet….I am going to have to check out this amp…The other boogies just don’t have it unless you have an old one …Anyways keep rockin bro
Thanks man appreciate it! These amps will get you very close to that Metallica sound with some tweaking and a little bit of research and what frequencies to boost and cut
bro absoulutley annihilated those mids
Yt algorithm has blessed me yet again
hats off to you, this sounds absolutely killer and right on the money.
Insane,Such a nostalgic sound!
My friend had a .50 Calibre Half Stack...."Back in the day"....THIS and the Randall RG80...(The one Dimebag used) were like the 2 "Hidden Metal Gem's".... of this era...Absolutely FANTASTIC Metal Amps!....If you find one used, in decent shape, TRY IT at the very least. You might be shocked.
And they BOTH benefited greatly from the EQ pedal in the FX Loop trick. ...(a DimeBag staple)
Absolutely loved mine. Got in a pinch and gave it away.!! I was a 15 year old shredder pulling all these kickass tones outta me. First time that I realized a good sound will inspire you to new heights:
Sounds great mate, nice.
the best tone on YT is a 3.9k view video on a 50 sub channel
fuckin a right
Sounds great! 👍🤘
hell yes! Love this tone!
Sounds great
Pretty impressive man. I’ve honestly never heard a demo of the 50 cal I really liked till now.
That's incredible
love this amp
speechless !! what a sound !! (and a I am fan of the late 90s metallica sound) it is perfect
Sounds awesome
Sounds massive.
DUDE!!!! Yup, that’s it, that’s killer, major city bro.
Sounds massive
That is very, very close man 😮
Props👌🏻
The G12T-75 is so underrated. Same with the G12-65. Great video.
You nailed it
That's the "Master of Puppets" album tone pretty much nailed Bro! Thanks for posting. 👍P.S. - James Hetfield was using a Seymour Duncan INVADER pick up. If you listen to samples of that pick up online, you can hear how it did in fact effect the tone.
Holy Moses! That’s HEAVEY!
great stuff!
Great tone going to try this with my mark 3 and GE-7 today
Let me know how that sounds! I’ve been looking at getting into a mark 3
Honestly man, with how much you’re killin’ it with the 50 Cal…you might just say screw it. That being said I have a black dot that I adore. Never played a 50 cal so can’t say how the 3 compares but…they’re amazing. There’s an immediacy to the way it tracks what your playing. The only thing I can draw a comparison to is it’s almost like a performance vehicle where the gas, break, and overall handling are so dialed and sensitive that whatever you give it, it gives back in a split second. For better or worse
this is so BADASS
Holy fuck, this sounds awesome.
Thats Sick!
Man that cuts. I’d blend with something British if I was to use a tone like this today, but boy is that spot on!
This is sick
Nice playing😊
AWESOME 🤘🏼🤘🏼🎸🎸‼️‼️
Sounds massive! Are you running the EQ pedal in the front of the amp or FX Loop?
I’m running it through the effects loop and some post eq on garage band
3 surviving eq slider caps, impressive!
Haha the other 2 are working they are just missing the little knob for them
I put the High gain set of tubes from Eurotubes in mine. From Eugene Oregon
Siiiiiick man !!!!!!
I’m surprised they didn’t bump up the mid knob on the amp in conjunction with the EQ, a lot of the images I’ve seen on the internet of Metallica’s old rigs showed that they would scoop the mids to around 4 or 3 with an EQ in the loop and it’s crazy to think that they really didn’t need that much midrange from the amp in hindsight.
It would honestly make a lot less difference than you'd think, and you probably wouldn't even notice the difference of mids on 4-5 Vs 2, and, and with the way the EQ works on this amp, especially with the Graphic EQ on the Amp engaged, even with the mids at 10, it would change the sound slightly, but it wouldn't change the overall sound very much at all. It almost works as a pre gain EQ, and just changes the gain structure a tiny bit, but hardly changes the actual tone of the amp. It definitely doesn't work how you'd expect an EQ knob to work on most amps.
@@jamescassidy4045oh I remember researching nonstop for Info about the Mesa Mark series amps upon finding out you could technically plug straight into these amps and get an instantly tight natural amp tone without any kind of external boost needed.
I’ve been looking to get a Mesa Boogie Throttle Box EQ to use as a preamp pedal to pair with an IR pedal or a power amp pedal so that I could essentially have a solid state take on the Mark series amps. It doesn’t have the Parametric EQ face knobs to control the actual character of the distortion like the Mark series (it’s got a presence and a mid sweep to choose between a very honky midrange focused sound and a super loose sounding low end with a lot of high end sizzle) but it has the graphic EQ you see on the Mark series with the same frequencies and if paired with a solid state power amp I’d assume I could get some really tight high gain tones and almost completely replace an entire amp head on top of being able to choose to use an IR pedal into a monitor if you don’t want to use a full cabinet setup.
@@Stretchwreckedem469 Cool man. Yeah, the Marks are a bit different than the 50 Calibers(the one in this video), but still fairly similar. When the graphic EQ is out of the circuit the EQ knobs on the Amp become a bit more noticeable, but with it in, and on Ch2 with higher gain, it’s def more of a feel thing, and gain structure thing, but changes are all definitely fairly subtle.
Throttle box is cool, but honestly If you are planing to use it like a preamp, and into a power amp, or into the loop/power amp in, it’s not going to be like the preamp of a higher gain Amp, but that said there’s a couple things to consider.
Firstly, say you are using an amp with lots of gain already, and you put the TB Pedal completely in the Loop, you would definitely get the feel/sound of how a Mesa Graphic EQ would react/sound in a Mesa Amp more than you would just putting it in front of the Amp, but the sound of the Amp will still be the main sound. That said, if you put the TB Pedal in front of a fairly gainy Amp, it will be a great boost, and add some extra gain if you want, but EQ wise it will just shape the gain before the Preamp, and be quite a bit less apparent than if the EQ was in the loop. EQ’s in front are almost like changing how your pickups sound, and will push the amp more just like hotter pickups would, but because the EQ is before the Preamp, it will just shape the distortion character mostly, and won’t act like a graphic EQ does on a Mesa Amp. So your best bet would be to use it in the Loop, but as for using the Pedal like a Preamp pedal, and getting higher gain Amp tones, it’s not really going to get you there, because that pedal is more about the EQ, but other than the EQ, it’s just a basic overdrive. It’s not that it doesn’t have gain, but it would be comparable to an OD 1 style clipping/sound.
metallica played mark II C+ and this is an entirely different amp that frankly doesn't sound anywhere near the same on its own. the 50 cal have entirely different textures. their settings also changed quite drastically as well from picture to picture and era to era. from my own amp i can tell you that raisin the mid knob makes it slightly more wooly, but its something you can feel while playing it rather than a listener hearing it. the mids on the graphic EQ are incredibly sensitive on the mark II and III however. also if you set up a mark II or III with the old settings, its a lot more scratchy and crunchy than you'd think. you expect deep and heavy, but they had the bass slider way down. it was a weird tone.
@@Stretchwreckedem469run a flux drive as a boost into a joyo california (mark ii amp sim) and it'll get stupid close for pedals. I also throw a blackstar ht drive in there as well for just a little more boost and add a little tube grit as well. It's a killer combo.
I can get really close with the hx stomp, that really says something tbh but there's flub I'm missing I think ._. its so thick, so juicy there's just something about tubes that can't be done perfectly just yet. Tubes are just something else, somehow organic.
Sounds KIIIILLLLEERRRRRR
Mids, who needs em?
This rocks dude
Killer tone! Genuinely curious, why are they mono tracks?
Guitars are rarely recorded in stereo (IE recording a stereo field with one performance). He recorded 4 mono performances, but placed each of those performances onto the stereo field (2 panned hard left, the other 2 panned hard right). He recorded mono files, but it's altogether a stereo image. This is the usual method for quad tracking, which Metallica did for MoP, AJFA, and Black Album - I'm not sure if they also did it on other albums.
So many people look past the ge7 I have it running thou the effects loop of my mark v 90 watt and with a Mesa flux over drive through the front not to add to much gain but to help with fine tuning the amp and the ge7 really wakes it up. This tone is NASTY
Heavy asf
This tone is unreal. What guitar are you playing for this?
Amazing tone dude! Are both the EQ's on? I didn't understand that. Massive sound
Yea the graphic eq on the amp and the 7 band is on
The GE-7 is in the front, right? And the onboard 5-band is after the gain stage (equivalent to being in the loop?). So the GE-7 changes what frequencies get distorted more, then you shape the overall tone with the onboard EQ. So although they're both on they have very different roles. Or at least that's how I understand it.
@@chrisday4845 no, the ge7 is in the loop as well to fine tune the tone
Hey man do you think you could give an exact like bideo of all the settings and gear
would this get lost in a band mix if your scoop your mids that much?
Amazing sound, Jeremy! Help me,please.. Can I get a similar sound from Mesa Formula Preamp? I can buy it at a good price, but some people say it's not capable for a heavy sound..Even like Metallica, for example.. Maybe you have used it.. Is it true in your opinion? Thanks in advance
Damn!!!!!!
Is it just me or does this sound unfuckingbelievable?!! VERY COOL DUDE!........ I listened several times.
Bad ass
Screen shot engaged.....
how do you balance the EQ settings on the amp with the GE-7 settings?
instead of using that eq i think there are images of jame's amp with numbers on the actual amp itself for the knobs and the eq on the amp, still a cool tone!
If you really think about it, the numbers you are referring make sense only and only if, you are using the exact same setup that was used on the record : here he is using a caliber + which is a simplified, stripped down version of a mark, and not using the power amps Hetfield would have used, I would really advise to use your ears rather than these numbers.
@@SociopatheAssume oh, i thought they were using at least comparable tone to the real recording, thanks!
How much difference does that speaker make vs say a v30?
My 50cal+ sounds just like this, into V30's
This is extremely scooped, Sounds Great but i dont know if it will fit well in a band or a mix
That's brilliant. Is it double tracked? I seem to hear a double, but I'm not sure. I should listen on headphones, I guess
4 mono tracks, in the description
@@BoneStack117 I always forget to check the description.
Are you using an EQ in the loop or front?
I have vintage Celestion G12T-75 and vintage Dirty Fingers in a '84 Explorer. Tried this with a Mark III, it sounded crap. Caliber and the MK III must be quite different.
Do you run the GE7 in front of the amp or in the loop?
Loop
Can you please send me the settings , I have a 50 cal +
Are there any other pedals in the chain or is the eq it? And is a similar sound achievable with the combo version of this amp
No other pedals used in the chain, and yes you should be able to with the stock speaker as well
@@Metalicker69 oh man thank you so much just got the amp and the pedal after watching this video and a bunch of others on the 50 cal.
do you use any other pedals besides the eq?
Nope just some post eq in GarageBand, a high and low shelf to tame it down a little bit
I wanted you to keep going. :/
Do you go from your guitar into the Boss and then into input of the Mesa?
No the guitar is straight into the amp, the eq is through the effects loop
congratulations, beautiful sound....what guitar are you using? pikup?
I’m using an epiphone les Paul studio with a Duncan distortion in the bridge
the speakers matter the most in heavily distorted and high gain guitar tone, unfortunately the original speakers during mop were never documented. but this sounds insanely close. anyways, pickups have advanced a ton, meaning that even cheap chinese stock ones sound pretty good.
if you want the same results as swapping pickups, turn your gain knob up.
@@nouveaumanifesto the g12t75 sounds really close to my ears, but it could of been any speaker honestly, they switched out cabinets through out the whole recording session, and I agree on the pickups, speakers are the main culprit to the sound you are looking for
@Metalicker69 I meant that for the main commenter, but I'm glad you agree. if you used those in this video, they definitely sound very close. unfortunately with youtube compression I doubt we would ever get a clear definite answer as to what would perfectly replicate the tone. but like I said, this is super close to my ears
Hey dude what is the difference between having the mesa EQ switch either in "auto" or "in" position ?
Having it in auto will only affect the lead channel, having it on the in position it will affect both channels
@@Metalicker69
Thanks
pretty close
Das alotta sliders
A little muddy but its good
this is like a master of puppets tone
What cabinet/speakers are you using?
Ampeg 4x12 loaded with g12t75s
pray for this man. He has a very rare and serious medical condition that causes irreversible loss of mids. Many do not know about it, but it affects dozens of metal players each year and we need to raise awareness of this problem so metal mixes can improve.
Nay kind sir, it’s righteous.🤙🏼 - we pray for the the redemption of your misguided soul🙏🏼
Hi. Whats the year of your amp ? Thanks
I believer it’s either a 91 or 92
Single or double tracked?
my listening tells me it's double tracked. One to the left, one to the right.
This is supersick
What happened to the 240 and the 2200 eq toggle
I lost the slider caps, they are still useable
@@Metalicker69 can you do blackened tone please?
Deth Leper
Would sound so much better with mids on 7
I jizzed when I heard this
This is great for playing alone, but there's too much bass in this tone if you've got a bassist playing along, too.
I swear I hear a chorus pedal.
0 middle?
That was standard on old mesas. I've had this same head for nearly 30 years. The paper instructions that came with mine described starting knob settings for different sounds. Mid Cut V on the EQ was typical for metal sounds on old mesas, and the tone knobs were set at 10/3/2 or even 10/2/0.
The 50 cal plus was and is the way to get the Metallica sound out of a budget head.
@@mattevans5236 thanks! 🤟🏻
Sounds like there is no mids
I got a mesa 50 cal (not plus) and i will never sell it ever.
Album self destuck but IS whath the titr

On top of this, have u not heard Ride The Lightning. I mean what a stunning tone that is.
