Lindsay is a friggin genius. After all these years, not being able to perfectly replicate it! Look how many years we have all loved, played and sang this song, yet there are mysteries in it still. This band has more mysticism than we ever knew.
This was fascinating. To me it was obvious off the bat that he was playing the Les Paul in the recording. And I totally agree it could easily be a Marshall. The Leslie I wouldn't have guessed at all. And I was also astonished when I heard those bass notes in the licks. Fascinating all round. He really isn't as appreciated by most guitar players as he should be.
This answered a life long question for me which was why does it sound "wrong" when most people play it. Thank you!
Weirdly, I was just laying down tracks for a cover we're doing of Dreams last night and I KNEW that Fmaj7 to Gmaj7 progression didn't sound like Buckingham's part on the record. Thank you so much for working through this and making this video!
Man. I could sit and watch a video like this for ALL of my favorite songs
That sounds pretty accurate compared to the original recording, well done.
words cannot describe how much i appreciate this video. this song has been my favorite since i was 11. thank you so much truly
Thank you so much for your comment!
Lindsey Buckingham is still alive, has anyone tried asking him about these details?
The amount of cocaine that fueled the making of this album would probably make Pablo Escobar blush. The hour long cocaine infused arguments were at the forefront of every session and it would more than likely be the longer lasting memory than how the guitar was set up for Dreams.
This is ultimately my assumption in the end based on the history, but I would definitely love to hear if he actually remembers it!
@@RobertNolan I agree, but that being said, Lindsey is also a freaking perfectionist. I wouldn't be surprised if he remembered it all exactly as it happened in the studio.
Claude, please keep making your amazing videos! You deserve a million musician views🙏
Thank you for those kind words.
WOW, awesome work! I've been listening to fleetwood mac for more than 20 years and I can say you really nailed it and also allowed me to hear stuff I didn't hear before.
Thank you very much!!
This is a fantastic analysis Claude!
Thank you very much
Amazing video. You are my new favorite UA-cam guitar channel. Informative, entertaining, and insane talent. Thanks for all your hard work.
Thank you! This is very kind of you to say
Nice work on analyzing the F/G chord and citing your references.
I dont often comment, but excellent video. Excellent deductive skills, reseach, and application. Great video. you earned a sub with this one.
I'm not a guitarist, but this has been one of my favorite albums since I found it on vinyl in college, and I've always been curious about the instrumentation of this song. (I've listened to Dreams hundreds of times and have never even been sure if the electric guitar part was really a guitar!) Anyway, thank you so much for this, you nailed it. I watched another, very famous UA-camr 'analyze' this song and was really disappointed and confused that the acoustic guitar part he plays on the chorus does not actually sound like the song. That sent me down a YT rabbit hole, and to this video. Fantastic job, well done!
Great video! I'm just gonna keep playing my own way live, because to play exactly how you showed would require an exclusive guitar on stage or another tunning session, so I really don´t think it worths. Indeed, it worths to know how the record was made, and I congratulate you for the work!
Great points and timely too, since i have to be ready to play this tomorrow at practice. I believe you are exactly right. Thx
I loved this video 😭 ty 🙏
Awesome, awesome video. Thank you!
This was excellent - tremendous work, and thank you for posting. This one always gave me fits. So cool to see it broken down like this.
Great work!
This is great! I’ve put lots of thought into what makes this song sound so unique and this is the closest I’ve seen! Though something that I think might also have gone into it is two tracks on the electric, which could be where we’re hearing the bass notes/chords over those licks. That could’ve been what Ken meant by having the dry guitar in the left channel. Maybe that channel is strictly chordal stuff and the rest is the Leslie parts. I also saw that isolated tracks video you referenced just before clicking on yours and had the same realization about the F/G in the chorus, and you confirmed it for me!
Awesome video mate! Really enjoyed this one!
Thanks man!
thanks for info really appreciate it
The video I didn’t know I needed. Thank you!! Always wondered why the tabs sounded so wrong..
This is stellar! Great video!! I love the research and the attention to detail!
This video is so well done! Well delivered, well performed, well recorded, well executed!
Thanks a lot! This is too kind
Such a good video I came back 2 days in a row
Great job. 👏
Really informative video, now I listen to this and get it.Buckingham' technique is so nuanced.
Amazing video Claude! Really inspiring content and playing :)
Thanks a lot! I'm glad you enjoyed it
You have immaculate taste in regards to topics to cover! The vultures vid and then this!! You truly are tackling questions I've always had
Really glad you are enjoying the content!
great work my dude keep it going
Thanks a lot! Definitely working on more
I think you got it on the spot. Nice analysis.
A friend of mine wants to sing this. We have recorded many songs together and I'm only just starting on the backing tracks. When she mentioned 'Dreams' I thought 'Great, this will be easy it's only two chords!' but quickly realising it is so complex. This my most difficult assignment for her so far, but thanks to people like you it's starting to come together.👍
That's awesome! I'm so glad I could help
Great video. Well done!
Thanks a lot!
@@ClaudeRuelle You obviously invest a lot of time into your work and it shows. I look forward to your future projects. Subbed!
Admirable detective work 👌
the signal that goes to the leslie is actually a sony contact mic that is taped in a strat under the bridge and then goes to a volume pedal, then the leslie cabinet and then the roland re-201
Oh wow, this is really cool! Never could have figured that out by just listening
@@ClaudeRuelle one of the engineers of rumours actually say it in an interview. It must be on the internet if you search lindsey buckingham equipment
Brilliant Man
have you got the link to will anderson's video you reference at 4:06? i can't find it on his channel. great breakdown dude, thank you!
Excellent!
Thanks, Claude!
Thanks for watching!
Dude I discovered you few minutes ago and just wanted to say:
Your videos are honestly tremendous!! Do yourself and everyone else a favor and keep them coming if you can!
I can see the amount of work you are putting in and you will blow up fairly soon so pleaaase keep going man!
All the best to you!!
Thank you so much for these very encouraging words!
This is a great video and to make it even better, I think I see the back cover of the Grateful Dead's Aoxoamooa album on the shelf back there...pray tell and do you have a related video?
Haha not yet, but that'd be a great idea for a video. Thanks for your comment
Great video my friend!!! Could you please do a video on how the sound for the solo as well??!!
Thanks for the suggestion, I'll think about it
Lindsey uses alternate tunings very very often, ("The Chain" and "Never Going Back again" are both drop D, "Rock Away Blind" and "Shut Us Down" are open A and open G respectively) so it's highly likely he used open E with a capo. I've seen him use open E playing "Stephanie" from the Buckingham Nicks album. Stevie once said in an interview she'd find it frustrating that she'd write a song on one of Lindsey's guitars in a particular tuning and then when she went back to it she wouldn't be able to recreate it because he'd changed the tunings of the strings.
Hey amazing. video! Do you have tabs for the original lead guitar part
Hey, still happen to have the tabs for the original lead guitar part? 😅
your videos a criminally underrated, loved every video ive watched from you. they are amazing. thanl you for the content
Thank you very much. Glad you're getting something out of them.
Ya sure he was even in standard tuning?
*ah, yes. But, I mean he’s in a different tuning for the electric parts as well.
Beautiful sound you got there, regardless of it being how Buckingham played it or not.
He certainly wasn’t doing the EZ Chord Book version.
I didn’t think he played in standard tuning on very much, if anything at all certain point.
I’ve always played those electric parts with full chords, only because it sounded better when I was playing it solo.
I was always trying to do the rhythm and lead feel, after reading about and hearing Robert Johnson and Hendrix.
Buckingham has some of the most lovely choirs voicings in music.
There are Plugins which emulate Leslie Speaker cabinets.
This is really a eye opener and for me THE most common guitar sounds as in the song.
Thank you so much for sharing your findings. 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
Interesting!
Hey Claude!
Hey Ali!
Nice work, the second version sounds better.
You say that you think open E is used and the high E string is tuned down. What is it tuned down to, please? Fascinating video.
It's tuned down to F to get a Maj7 chord
Mixing Mastering Online did their own video and found that Lindsey use TWO different amps for Dreams: yes, one is a Marshall and the other one is a Hiwatt.
Interesting! Two amps makes a lot of sense
Is that a 1996-1998 Cali series strat? Looks just like mine!
Nvm. I see the headstock is different. I'd still like to know what it is though
It's a 1995 Tex Mex
I thought the chorus chords could be Am/F > G
Ken Caillat, Colbie's dad!
That's right!
I’m surprised most people can’t just hear this with their ear when they listen to the song… I could easily tell you that there’s more layers & notes missing in the basic version most people on UA-cam play
Nice sleuthing. I think you got it.
I know how to get it exact. Use the right gear.
Good ear.
The Univibe was NOT meant to replicate a rotary speaker
9:09
No one ever plays the minor 6 that happens in that bridge area
Claude: there is a radio documentary called the making of Rumors with Ken Caillat and Richard Dashut. Several hours and a lot of great info on how they made Rumors. FYI. M
Ah, thanks a lot of the rec, I'll go check this out!
