I am a paper pattern kind of person as well! I once tried following an electronic version of a pattern for a sweater, and somehow halfway along the way ended up following the instructions for a different size than the one I was intending to make. Also, omg, putting your patterns in clear plastic sleeves is GENIUS! A few months ago, my kitten unexpectedly jumped on the table while I was knitting and spilled my full coffee mug onto the pattern I was following. That crisis could’ve been averted! Thank you for making and sharing this video!
Thanks! :)
I’ll be cheering you all on. I’m in the middle of a big project for Christmas, so I won’t be participating. Can’t wait to see your sweaters 🧶❤️
Thanks! :)
Very helpful, thanks for the prep info. Ive always used the plastic sleeves & file pattern away within its sleeve in my knitting notebook, with notes tucked-in for if i knit the pattern again. Luv your washi tape idea! When i finish my project, i take the swatch & seam it with ends tucked inside...it becomes a cozy coaster for my tea/coffee mug! 🥰💕
that's a fun idea! I have no idea what to do with all of my swatches. I was thinking about giving them to my 3 yo to play with??
@@professorpurl Also can make quilt blankies for her dolls, just seaming together squares that please you.
Winding and swatching today. This will be my second Love Note but I didn't put in my notes what needle size I previously used! Ugh! This one I'm skipping the lace, I am excited!
Thank you Nicole, so helpful! Now, I’m off to swatch!
yay! I am going to do a second swatch today
Hi Nicole. Extremely helpful. Love the very systematic approach.Thank you. Only thing you didn’t mention Is whether you block your swatch Before you measure gauge.
Yes, definitely wet block your swatch and then measure after it dries.
Your teacher genes came out in this video! Love it!
haha :) this is the best comment! thank you
Thank you for this video. Yesterday I swatched flat on 6mm needles and I got 15st per 4", and the fabric was a bit loose. This morning I swatched on 5.5mm and in the same swatch I switched to 6mm, but on this one I did swatch circular. What a difference! On the 6mm this time my gauge was perfect 🥰. I haven't blocked this yet, but I will, just to make sure
so fun! I also wet block my swatch after and then measure
I am so excited for this kal to start! My mohair arrived in the mail yesterday and I am hoping to start swatching tonight after work!
yay!! :)
Great video. Seeing “swatch in the round” was very helpful.
Thanks! :)
Thank you so much for helping us prepare. Ahhh!!! The mathematical approach works every time!!! That’s way you love to knit sweaters!!!! You are inspiring us!!!! See you Friday!!!! Let’s hope that I don’t have my pjs on😳
Thanks! I am debating whether I will have my PJs on or not for the live.
Thanks for doing this. Knit my swatch in the flat for my first sweater and would probably have changed the needle size to adjust the fabric if I’d swatched in the round. Just finished my swatch for the Love Note and am waiting for it to dry. Looking forward to Friday.
One of my swatches is drying right now! I am going to do a second one now. I, too, and looking forward to Friday!
Thank you, very helpful!
Thanks!
Hi Nicole, I was just swatching for my Love Note! :) Great timing and thanks for the video. I'm surprised at how different knitters and different yarn result in different gauge. I have to go up to Needle 10.5 to get stitch gauge, and even with 10.5 needles I have to purposefully relax my fingers/arms and not pull too tight. Looking forward to casting on!
It is so fascinating. Thanks for joining the KAL. I am also really looking forward to casting on. :)
This is helpful thankyou. I can’t make the live thingy but hoping you’ll record it so I can watch later? X
I am new to the UA-cam world. So I think/hope that it will save to my channel once the live is over and you can watch it whenever.
I used the size 10 needles for my first swatch and it was see through! Yikes! Going down to needle sizes. Thanks for the video.
Yeah, it's so interesting our different tensions. I'm such a loose knitter I have knit this on a 7! I know people that have sized up on this, with like a 10.5 or 11.
I'm swatching today. I have to decide between two yarns so the one giving me gauge will be the winner 😁
oh I love this idea!
thank you for this video....
and thanks for watching :)
I have seen knitters knit the love note without lace but I haven’t been able to find how to do that in the pattern or on the project pages
all I did is omit the lace. Like is you are supposed to knit 20 rounds of lace, all I did was knit 20 rounds of stockinette.
When doing the M1 for the Love Note are you doing a m1L or a M1R? Or does it matter?? Thanks!!!
I'm wondering what happens with the lace pattern if I don't get row Guage? I got stitch Guage but I'm almost one row per inch short. I'm worried about how this affects the increase rounds placement. Any help would be appreciated!
That's a great thing to think about. What I would suggest is to try the sweater on. You can easily add an extra lace repeat or there is a section of increases and stockinette after the lace before separating for sleeves you could add on to.
New to Knitting....I have beginner question....When I gauge swatch with the yarn I selected (Yarn Bee Simply Flawless #3) I counted 14 stitches with 5.75 needles. So, If I downsize needles to 5.5 for the body of the Love Note then do I downsize the other set of needles (directions suggest US10 or6.0 and US7 or 4.5mm) so would I need to downsize this set of needles also? I am assuming these are the needles for the Yolk at 16" circular. And am I reading the pattern correctly ? I need 2 pair of circular needles and matching double pointed needles in the same mm size?
great question! Yes, if you size down for your body needles, then it's also a good idea to size down for the ribbing. I often do it proportionally. Like if I size down two sizes for the stockinette/body, then I also size down two sizes for the ribbing. I use a 16" for the yoke. You can certainly use DPNs for the sleeves if you want, but I use either a 9" or 16" (if I am doing wide sleeves) for the sleeves instead. It can be hard the first time making a sweater to coordinate all of the different size and lengths of needles. That's why it's nice to have an interchangeable set of needles if you can. I hope this helps!
@@professorpurl thank you, yes, I’m waiting for my swatch to dry to Re- measure. 🧶

Yay fun!
