    TOLKIEN explores the formative years of the renowned author’s life as he finds friendship, courage and inspiration among a fellow group of writers and artists at school. Their brotherhood strengthens as they grow up and weather love and loss together, including Tolkien’s tumultuous courtship of his beloved Edith Bratt, until the outbreak of the First World War which threatens to tear their fellowship apart. All of these experiences would later inspire Tolkien to write his famous Middle-earth novels.

    One of the joys of this film is, for once, seeing young people who are passionate about their scholarly lives, rather than seeing education as an unwelcome distraction from their all-important social lives.

    When I was a child it made no sense to me why Frodo could not return to the shire after the ring had been destroyed and that the fellowship was broken.

      There is a memoir called Testament of Youth written by Vera Brittain. It is a heartbreaking story of how her generation was marked by the losses of WW1. So many talents and possibilities snuffed out, bodies and minds destroyed. I wonder what world they may have created had they lived.

    The chemistry between the young actors, as well that between their adult counterparts was fantastic.
    And the dialogue was pure poetry! And the cinematography! For some reason the critics didn't like this movie, but I hope it gets some recognition through some awards/nominations.
    I get that it wasn't accurate (I actually expected it to be inaccurate as I was watching it -- the fantastical flashes of LOTR cemented my conclusion that it was a much fictionalized recounting), but I think it was the spirit of his life and the bonds he made that the filmmakers were trying to convey and it worked for me. I attended the Tolkien exhibit this year, which was fantastic and all too small and brief, but it served as an excellent precursor for watching this film.

    • @terragthegreat175
      @terragthegreat175 4 роки тому +34

      Anyone who expects a Biopic to be accurate is fooling themselves. The best a biopic can do is get at the heart of what one side of a person was like, since people are far too complex amd nuanced to be represented accurately. I think Tolkien did a great job at this, even if it couldn't cover the entirety of his person.

    • @oxfordpictionary
      @oxfordpictionary 4 роки тому +13

      I agree with you about the chemistry! I very much enjoyed this film as an imaginative telling of his young life. Also it was such a poignant examination of the devastation wrought by WWI, when you see these boys so full of life, and think what they had to endure in the trenches.

    • @luissimoes2645
      @luissimoes2645 5 місяців тому

      True, the dialogue feels like your're reading one of the many poems Tolkien wrote in the Lord of the Rings. In theory it should be the most boring parts of the book because it's almost blatant exposition of lore and history of the world and yet the poems have a ring and beauty to it wich makes them fun to read. Not to mention that the dialogue is very creative and has some great quotes like the one where Robert Gilson (young) says "I can die in any way the Fates choose, that's not up to me. But what is within my power is to decide how I live. Courageously or Timidly."

    The TCBS has indeed changed the world through art. Tolkien made a huge impact on the world of books and films since the LOTR was released. And the LOTR was (in my opinion) was based on their brotherhood, the fellowship that they had. Tolkien was totally devastated after the WW1 that he misses his friends. Through writing this book, Tolkien managed to express his feelings with the help of his creative mind and language. Trully a talented person indeed. Helheimr!.

In WWI, he lost two of them, another was shell-shocked & he himself was in a coma-like state for weeks. 5:55 about than battle
    "I wish it need not have happened in my time," said Frodo.
    “So do I,” said Gandalf, “and so do all who live to see such times. But that is not for them to decide. All we have to decide is what to do with the time that is given us.”
    "What's the wrong way?” Peacefully. Illness, old age. Anything other than battle.
    I can die in any way the fates choose, that's not up to me.
    But what is within my power is to decide how I live -
    Courageously or timidly.'
    Robert Gilson

    This film is hands down the greatest movie ever made about an author. Everything in it is authentic and sensitive, and we are drawn into Tolkien's burgeoning creative imagination. The director, Dome Karukoski, has the courage to explore the subject of homosexuality in Tolkien's life through his relationship with the poet Geoffrey Bache Smith. The love that the two share is beautifully portrayed in the film, without being either prudish or heavy-handed. Nicholas Hoult is a brilliant actor and deserved an Oscar nomination for his performance.

      Wait, are you saying that TOlkien and Geoffrey have in the movie is homosexual? Where did you get that from?

    • @canuck21
      @canuck21 3 роки тому +10

      Wait, homosexuality? What BS. Tolkien was a devout Catholic and he described his stories, The Lord of the Rings in particular, as fundamentally religious and Catholic. Either Hollywood made that up or you've been so conditioned to see gayness in everything that you created that aspect in your mind.
