I am really happy you found this tutorial helpful! Thank you for watching and taking a moment to leave a comment. Enjoy crocheting placemats!
I love this! Thank you for sharing several new (to me) techniques to perfect my crochetting skills. I wondered how I could change colors after each round and found that I could easily pull through the new color when making the second, front-to-back loop of the fake double crochet stitch. I then inserted my hook through both loops per video instructions, old color and new, pulled through with the new color, chained one and continued. The result is beautiful! There is a slight seam on the back of the work, but, who cares? It's the front that matters.
Å
To change colours after each round you just have to tie the two colours together and cut of the colour you aren't using anymore
Oh thanks for c/c explanation!!
Thanks for the great tutorial!! I’ve been crocheting in the round for years and I’ve never seen the way you do your fake double crochet. Absolutely brilliant!!

I have never seen a join done this way and I love it! I've made quite a few round items but it seems like some of them end up looking like hexagons...😉
You could definitely use this join for any round project! Once you get the hang of it, it’s super easy too! Thank you for watching and commenting! ❤️
Thank you so much you are excellent
Wonderful tutorial! Thank you for the pattern ❤
I had some tshirt/ribbon yarn in my stash and needed to use it up! Great size for pot holders too!
Anyone else get sore hands when working with this kind of yarn or just me 🙋♀️
Great to hear Sarah! Yes, that kind of yarn is very hard to work with. Thank you for watching and commenting!

Hi Rosemarie! Yes it’s a great trick and I now use this one in many of my projects. Thank you for watching and commenting.
Thank you for the awesome tutorial, and thank you for teaching new tips on ending the rounds with the fake stitch. My project came out perfect!! Cant wait to learn more from you. :)

Thank u so much!

Greetings from South Africa. I just came across your tutorial n followed along n I’m trilled with my first placemat. I’m going to make a total of 8 for my dining room table. Thank you for an easy to follow along tutorial. 👍🙏💕
That’s wonderful to hear! Welcome to my channel. I’m sure your placements will look beautiful! Thank you for watching and commenting.
How do I know if I should start directly with an increase in the new round or not? Some rounds you start with an increase an in some you just work 1dc in the next stitch
So enjoying this now lets see it i can actually do it... rheumatoid arthritis - crocheting keeps my hands from seizing this looks like great easy stocking stuffers
hi, thank yoo so much i was struggling for this ,came out well
I’m happy to hear it came out well! Thank you for watching and commenting.

I love the back loop part never seen that before ty for your tutorial. X
Tack!
Thank you!
This worked out perfectly!! Thank you!
If I wanted to keep going and make this into a floor mat, how would I go about doing that?? I can’t seem to work out when to start with an increase and when not to. Do you have a pattern/formula you’d be willing to share?? ❤️
I am using a finer yarn and smaller hook. I want to continue the pattern to make it bigger. I understand how to make additional increases for each row, but I'm confused as to when to start with an increase with the fdc or to increase at the next stitch. I was trying to see if there was a pattern to this but I'm not seeing it. What is the formula? Love your design and video!
O
Add 1DC between increases, for every next row. Ex: Row5 - 3 DC between Increases; Row 6 - 4 DC between Increases; Row 7- 5 DC between Increases; Row 8- 3 DC between Increases; FYI- Increase means 2DC from same loop..
@@tamminenibhavitha9475actually I’m trying to do the same as Rosemary here mentioned. I’m not really experienced so I’m not sure what your instructions are saying. What I’m trying to do is use cotton thread yarn to make a tablecloth. If you wouldn’t mind would you make it a little clearer please. Thank you.
@@tamminenibhavitha9475or is there a pattern you would recommend?
@@tamminenibhavitha9475in row 8 3 DC between increase?
thank you! Your instructions were very clear verbally and nice and slow visually. THANK YOU! As a beginner , and a lefty, I find that in many tutorials, the people kind of whip through those stitches and I'm having to stop and start several times over. Question though:
How do I continue making it bigger if I need to make it larger than 9 rows? I saw that someone else asked that question, but which row do I add my 2nd dc in the same stitch as the fake dc, and when do I just leave the fake dc alone and do two in the next stitch? I don't see a pattern in that.
I have that same question 🤔
Thanks for great way 😘 but can i ask u to write rows and first stitch after fake double crochet
Can this be done with half double crochet or single crochet? Particularly the join at end of round.
I’m making Ramona flowers bag from Scott pilgrim vs the world so this helped so much!!
No way!! Can you share the pattern please?
@@kellyconroy7782 okay so so far I’m using this for the sides of the bag and for the stars in the middle of her bag I’m using “Crochet star trivet” by Kara Adsit and then sewing the stars in the middle and for the connecting part I’m planning to just crochet a long rectangle to be the body of the bag and then the strap I’m not sure about yet! But I’m mostly using tutorials as puzzle pieces cause there sadly isn’t a tutorial on the bag 😭
May I ask how do we know about how many stitches to start with at the beginning of each row? As beginner, I am still confused every time.
Normally, I just count the first stitch as one then increased, next row will be two then increased and so on.
By the way, I love how you teach everything slowly and show it clearly before move on.
Hi Jonna, thank you for the tutorial about the fake double crochet. This way if closing the cirkel is new to me. I was wondering, could one change colour during this fake double crochet? Perhaps at the point, half way, where one picks up a new loop, going from front to back?
Oh my goodness, SUBSCRIBED! I love the idea of this "fake double crochet"! I've started and stopped crocheting a few times in my life, but stopped back in February or March because I got too fed up with struggling to learn how to make a bucket hat without ugly seams... maybe I'll try this placemat to see how things go!
I don't remember if the pattern I was using was done with double crochet or half double crochet... is there such a thing as a "fake half double crochet"? I might just try to mimic this, but feel free to let me know if you have a tutorial on a "fake half double crochet" on your channel too! 😊
Such a useful, flexible, beautiful pattern. I made one placemat as a sample for a crochet class at a school for the Deaf in Kenya where I'm volunteering. My hostess saw it and asked me to make four for her family.
Wonderful!! Thank you for watching and commenting!
I don’t understand how to figure out when to start a dc in same stitch as Rex and when to not. I’ve gone to 10th row-did 8dc after Ddd and so on. But how to I configure the rest? Thank you!
Thank you finally I could start crocheting using your tutorial 💗
This is great to hear! Thank you for watching and commenting💕
i am joining the rounds in the fake stitches...is it right?
thank you love this, but also for the fake double crochet stitch, it leaves a very obvious line in the back of the mat, if you don't want that just do a slip stitch in the same hole shown and chain three (it does the same thing and doesn't show a seem or mess up you stitch count)
I wastryung ro get written instructions for thus but site doesn't seem to be working...also I'm trying to figure out if I want to make It lager what is the pattern for the first Seton sts...DC into fake st or DC into the next st.
Just made 2 placements
❤❤❤❤❤
Wanted to know that is there any issue if i replace the last round with single crochets instead of double crochet? And what if i want to use a round of single crochet in the middle somewhere.
Hello, how many balls of yarn for one placemat. Thanks Diannah
Where can I purchase this yarn
Thank you, I am going to attempt this tutorial.
Everyone else seems to race through, this is not productive but even a beginner like myself can follow along.!!!
Wonderful! I was attempting to make this approachable for beginners. Thank you for watching and commenting ❤️
what size is your thread or yarn? how about your hook is there any number?
Hi there! Thank you so much for the video. I am just getting started with crocheting and am transitioning from hats to coasters and placemats. I have noticed with most yarns I use after i get past the 5th or 6th row it starts to turn into a bowl. Does this type of yarn eliminate that issue, or did i miss a step in the tutorial where you addressed that issue? Thanks!
I would say if it is doing this it is either your increasing is not being done enough or it is your tension.
If your stitch count is correct and you have enough stitches then try going up to a larger hook for those rounds.
Example: start with a 4.5mm hook and then for rounds after 4 go up to a 5mm hook.

Could this be used to make a round afghan using regular yarn or is it best done with a thicker yarn for placemats or rugs?
Absolutely you could make a round Afghan with this method. Thank you for watching and commenting Andrea!
Only just found this it’s a game changer I’ve been crocheting 60+ years and make a lot off Bennie hats can you use this method for any stitch thanks 😊
That’s amazing! Thank you for posting a comment of your experience with using this method on hats! ❤️
Hi Jonna, I love that placemat. I ordered the yarn on amazon but I need the pattern. I can't find it from an of your links. Please help.... thank you so much.

I just finished this pattern and am wondering how it can be extended as I'm making it into a floor rug using thicker yarn.
Just keep going with the increases. Last round here was 7 dc in between increases, next round would be 8 between increases.
Then 9,10,11,12 etc until the rug is the desired circumference ❤️
It’s going to be a gorgeous rug! If you have Instagram please tag me. I’m JonnaMartinezCrochet

@@JonnaMartinezCrochet Thanks and I will! Love your instructions and your clarity! And your fake dc!
I was concerned about the different beginnings of each row but it looks like I've figured it out! Its a teal and black varigated thickish yarn; LOOPS & Threads Braid BIG... Easy to work with!
Excellent ❤ I am egar to make the same
Wonderful! Thank you for watching and commenting!
My center circle is too big. How do I make it smaller 😢
Love this! But what do I do when i need a new yarn roll for a new row?
When you have about 5 inches left to the last bit of yarn, start your hdc stitch, when you have the 3 loops on the hook, grab the new yarn with your hook (about 5 inches from the tail) and pull it through to complete the last stitch. Then continue working with the new yarn.
Then weave in the tails when you get a chance.
Thank you for watching and commenting!
Thank you!
Do you have to use this type of yarn or can you use any bulky 5??
You could use bulky (5) but I would do another 1-3 rounds because it will be smaller.
I also recommend Cotton because it is easy to clean.
What is this yarn called
May i know where can i avail those yarn exactly what was used here? And the scissors?
They are linked in the description box of this video.
The yarn is from Vondrak Craft Store on Etsy and the scissors are from Amazon.
Thank you for watching!
You do seem to start even rounds with increase DC then DCs, and uneven rounds with DCs first then increase DCs. Did I get this right?
I followed the written pattern. I did not write this pattern.
You can print or view the pattern from the link in the description box.
Thank you for watching!
What is the size of the finished project,?
Can I used red heart yarn acrylic yarn for this project? And a hook size 8-5 mm? Blair ❤❤❤❤ I love your work!!!!!!
You probably could but you’d need to use 3 strands of the worsted held together or find a bulky 6 yarn by Yarnspirations.
Also I use mine (cotton) for hot pads for pots sometimes. I wouldn’t do that with acrylic yarn as it has a higher potential to melt.
Thank you so much for watching! ❤️❤️❤️
@@JonnaMartinezCrochet oh ok thanks
hi, would you care if I shared your photo in a video on my other channel to link it back to your video? I wouldnt show the pattern or video just the photo? thanks )
Hi! Absolutely! Thank you for asking. You should link your video here. I’ll check it out. ❤️
@@JonnaMartinezCrochet I will thanks 😊
Is there a fake triple crochet tutorial? Thanks in advance!❤
Hi I am really enjoying this pattern but do not seem to be able to find a printable version. Can you help.
Please check out the link in the description box. Thank you for watching and commenting.
Can you keep going on and increasing the same way will it turn out?
Yes! Thank you for watching and commenting!
@@JonnaMartinezCrochet thank you dear.
What is the material that can be used to make the place mat stiff
You could use a cord yarn, or just cord, you could also make this using jute twine.
How much tape yarn do I need to buy to make nine of them? I don’t see how many placemats you can make out of what you are using. Thank you!
I believe I got 3 out of two rolls from Vondrak yarn.
You can check out the link to the etsy shop in the description box below
Does anyone know how to do a colour change half way through? I’ve got to round 6 and fancy switching to another colour but I’m not sure where the best place to start off the new colour would be?
Also how would I make an even larger one - Just keep with the increases and then SDC in between with one more added to each round?
The color change might be hard to understand, but at any point you would start a dc, half way through, when you have 2 loops left on the hook you will pull in the tail of another color to finish the stitch with the new color. There are lots of tutorials on it too if you look.
As far as making this bigger, yes just continue with the increases.
You will have one more stitches between the increases each round, 8, then 9 then 10, etc.
I guess you could crochet this in single crochet I like that stitch better
