I hope this video will help you with crocheting a flat circle with no seam. Thank you for watching, Anja xx
Such an awesome explanation to remember how many to increase with each row! Thank you so much!!
It is not silly at all , it is very helpful tips and explained very well. Thanks a lot for your effort 👍👍
@Hiba Riyas she's used to it , she doesn't need to do it slowly
By far the clearest explanation and demonstration I’ve seen on UA-cam. Thank you!
DIANE
Anja, I have been making hats using the basic process you have in this tutorial, however, after crocheting several rows and want to end, I find that I am on the row just above where I want to end. I can't properly end because to do the last slip stitch means making the slip stitch into the first stitch on the row below. I am new to crocheting and can't for the life of me figure out what I am doing wrong.????
Would appreciate your help if you have time.
Here in 2023 and it's the best explanation on the internet on how to do the increases in the round. THANK YOU. This is such a game changer. Cheers to the "scared stitch"
My reaction too!
Wow cheers to the scared stitch
I agreeeee
It’s 2024 now 🥹
Ophelia I am 57 and have been crocheting and knitting for 52 of those years. You just demystified the whole process for me. 🙂 I especially appreciate your explanation of the first chain and the slip stitch forming the top of that last stitch. Thank you, thank you for cementing the process for me. ❤️
You are so welcome! Thank you for watching MaryintheMaking ! Anja xxx 💕🌈
Ophelia I'm 69 yrs and have been crocheting since I was 8 years old and yes you make more sense and your way demystifies, thank you.
Ophelia I started a project in the round and was going nuts trying to keep my rounds flat while increasing. I even looked for videos to help those I saw were either fast or making no sense. I found yours and was very elated. Did I say I am 69 years old and have been crocheting since 8 yrs of age. In my 40's I picked up my hook again along with many projects. You are a FANTASTIC INSTRUCTOR. And your method isn't silly at all if that's what's working for you and it helps others. Thank you for demystifying increasing rounds and keeping the project flat.
I agree with MaryintheMaking!!! I started crocheting "circles" about 1 year ago. Every video I've watched had a different way of counting the stitches while making a flat circle, and none made sense to me. Your video made me feel like yelling "Hurray!" Thank you! 🤗
Hellosies, I know this is a few yrs old but I just watched this video & you wrote exactly what I was gonna say also, I've been crocheting for 40+ yrs & now I get it. 💖
THANK YOU! THANK YOU! I was wondering why my "circles" were coming out as a hexagon. You really cleared things up for me. I love your stories about the stitches which also REALLY HELPS me understand the why and the how for the increases. Also, I love your accent!
At first I was confused about the scared stitch, but once it made sense I realised how genius it is (and easy to remember). Thank you!
You're very welcome Joan, glad it clicked for you, Anja x
Just a memory. This was the original UA-cam video that got me hooked on Anja. Forever happy!
Awwww, thanks Nancy, Anja x
Finally I understand how to increase! Been intimidated for years how to increase...I love the 'scared stitch' as it really explains how to increase! And it's not silly - it helped me!
Silly so called “scared stitch”
Me too!
Seriously! There has been multiple times I have tried to do a circle and always came up with the wrong number... you slammed dunked my issue. THANK YOU SO MUCH!
It’s definitely not silly I think it’s one of the most brilliant things I have heard in a long time
So this is the video I picked. I’d love to enter even win the hook set. Congratulations on 60000. My on the 2+ yrs I’ve watched your channel has grown. cheers!
Sure
This is a definite game-changer! I’ve been crocheting for 56 years, and this is the first time I’ve felt completely confident in my rounds! Thank you soooo much!
Wonderful! Thank you for watching Theresa Hartman ! Anja xxx 💕🌈
😍i hope you a happy long life
This is the best magic ring and flat circle explanation and method I have ever seen. THANK YOU so much, I finally got how to do both and will always remember you 'scared stitch' trick. 💕💕💕
Glad it helped! Thank you for watching Yelena Figueroa ! Anja xxx 💕🌈
Kn
Best explanation I've ever seen of anything crochet. I've been crocheting about a year and there's other concepts even that I didn't really understand until this video, like how the chains and slip stitch together make a complete stitch. These silly stories really stick in your brain, ill never forget all thiis now
That's great news Jasmine, glad it's been helpful for you, Anja x
THANK YOU SO MUCH... I'm 74 and like MaryintheMaking below, I am grateful to have this "demystified". Your video is a blessing to crochet fans world-wide. BLESSINGS to you from Oregon.
You are so welcome! Thank you for watching Sue G. ! Anja xxx 💕🌈
I have been crocheting for nearly 30 years. The brain drain that could've been avoided over all these years if I had ONLY known, the last stitch was afraid and wanted to stay with the stitch before.. it's a wonderful story I can tell to all my fellow hookers.. THANK YOU!!!
I’m absolutely amazed how I understood your teachings in SECONDS - vs the last 5 hours I’ve spent on soooo many other platforms
Thank you for posting!!! 🥰
The scared new stitch idea and number of row equals the number of stitch where you multiply is a brilliant idea for someone with poor memory. Each time you said scared stitch, I couldn’t help but chuckle. Thank you lots.
Hi, thank you for watching my video, I'm so glad it's helping you remember the system, happy crocheting, Anja x
What a great way to teach little ones how to crochet! The little story is cute.
Also - thank you! After I don’t know how many years of trying to figure out how to do a magic circle, your tutorial is the only one that allowed me to - finally! - figure it out. Sounds silly, I know but, it was always elusive to me. So, again; thank you!
Thank you so much, Anja, from sunny Trinidad! You are a natural born teacher. I will never forget this tip and I'm already imagining all the possibilities for flat circles - table runners, coasters, trivet, rugs, scrubbies.... Ahhh... the possibilities are endless!! Thanks again 😊
I started crocheting a month ago and wasn’t able to make ANYTHING because no tutorial would ever make sense to me. I would look at the comments in a tutorial and they would all basically say the same thing “This tutorial is the best one out there”. Only it wasn’t the best one because THIS one is!! You explain stuff so easily and I just finished my first ever circle that I will be using as a coaster. I am over the moon to finally find someone who explains everything in a way someone like me could understand. I’m now going to make 700 flat circles for my house :DD
700 circles, wow, that's a lifetime obligation right there, l'm so glad my video helped you with this, good luck starcausewhynot9249, Anja x
Thank you for this video on how to make a flat circle coaster! I love your tip in keepig track of how many stitches you are to suppose to do in each row by stating that the last stitch in a count is afraid so it wants to be in the same stitch as the previous stitch. It is so clever!
I'm 22, I've just started crocheting again and I've already reviewed so many videos to understand how to increase past the second row, and you've laid it out comprehensively and quickly! Thank you so much for simply demonstrating what I have been struggling with for two days.
You are so welcome, glad it helped you! Anja x
The new stitch in the row is scared! What a fantastic way to remember this, I don't think I'll ever forget this. Thank you for this video! :)
Thank you for watching Jazzmin ! Anja xxx 💕🌈
Ibabsolutley love that the first chains become the last stitch in the circle. The joint moves around and finishes off beautifully!! ❤
Thank you, Anja x
I've watched a dozen beginner flat circle videos. Anja, this one is the best!! I will never forget. Thank you so much. This is when I wish my Dutch grandmother was here to teach me again. Crocheting brings back so many memories of her from childhood.
Thank you! I had trouble understanding the increase from row to row. Now i understand. Thanks so much!
Excellent! Thank you for watching Norafifah Safar ! Anja xxx 💕🌈
I get you, the way you think. I am a visual learner. I learn by instruction and hands on at the same time. I unable to learn by verbal means alone. I understand how you weave a story in order to remember. Thanks, I dont feel like I am alone in the way that I think! Thanks for sharing.
You're very welcome C Milam, I'm glad it helped you. Anja x
I now know how to make a magic circle and a flat round from watching just one video. Thank you.
Hello Ellen, you're very welcome, glad it's helpful, thank you Anja x
You explain it like I'm a kindergartener and I absolutely 100% LOVE IT. I'm new to crochet and this is the most helpful video I have ever watched.
Anja, thank you, thank you, thank you!!!!! I will never dread beanies ever again and not have that dreadful crooked line either! You are such a love. My Nanny and my Grandmother's help teach me to crochet. Also, our housekeeper, helped when my parents would go out of country. They had a dairy farm in Surrey. I loved it there. It just took a few days to get acclimated to the smell of silage. Whew! That is some smelly stuff! However, after a few days one couldn't smell it anymore.
I do rattle on! I do appreciate you so much. I've been a subscriber forever and have always loved you. But this video will change my crochet life! You see, I have eight grandchildren and they love my beanies. I take them to pick out their yarn and then I whip up their little beanies, some not so little anymore.❤ Thank you dear one!
I feel the same way as Sheryl! Thank you so much for this tutorial and funny but helpful explanation. It makes sense of something that use to be confusing to me. You are a great teacher. 😁🙂
WOW!! Thank you, thank you, thank you!! It's not that I'm getting old or anything (66) but, my memory seems to get shorter as I get older. This is a great way for me to remember how many stitches I need to increase to make a circle! Bless you!! Love Mimi
Hi, it's been a while I do crochet but you explain si well that I understud I did mistakes for si long... 😢 It will not happen anymore because of your explanation. THANK YOU SO MUCH OPHELIA!!
Thank you so much for this tutorial. Counting the first ch2 as the last stitch instead of the first makes all the difference. Your instructions do indeed make a perfectly flat circle with no seam. When making a hat, I've found that starting with 8 stitches (instead of 10) will cause the crown of the hat to gently curve down to where the straight sides begin.
Thank you for watching Voyager ! Anja xxx 💕🌈
"3 is scared" - love it, great tutorial!
Thanks so much!
Hello Anya, I have only been crocheting for 5 months. And wished I had seen is in the very beginning! Would have saved me a lot of frogging. 😊 Thank you so much, your explanation was perfect and so easy to remember. Looking forward to watching all your teachings! Take Care.
This is THE video that taught me how to crochet a flat circle!
Lol it really helped me out because the story you tell about the yarn really stuck in my head! So thank you!
It's been years now since I watched it last but I always think of this video whenever I go to crochet a flat circle!
I came back just so I could share my love and appreciation for this video with my new to crochet friends! ❤😊
Edit: found my comment!!!
I watched this 4 years ago! 😂
You are so welcome!
Thank you for your tip on making a flat circle. I've been trying to figure out the pattern for hours.😁
I don't know how long I've been trying to crochet this watermelon rug now, and started over and over again and it kept bending... Thank you SO so much for giving a proper walkthrough! It's amazing, simple and a cute way to remember. I can now start again, hopefully for the last time, and do it right!! 😁😁
Awwww, good luck with that project Josefine, Anja x
You have just explained to me, very simply, how to crochet a perfect circle. I’m impressed and no longer worried about crocheting a circle. Thank you so so much for this tutorial. Amazing! 🤩
You “scared” technic is BRILLIANT!!! There is no way to miss on this one!!! Thank you sooooo much for your time and talent!
You are so welcome! Thank you for watching Yinet Monge ! Anja xxx 💕🌈
Ophelia Talks my pleasure! Take care ♥️
Oh, Anja, what an awesome memory tip for crocheting in the round. As you said, it may be a silly little thing, but who cares when it's greatly helping you to keep track? I'm all for tips and tricks for memory or crochet. I also noticed that with this process of chaining up 2 and then forgetting about it gives a much cleaner finish with no unsightly seam in the project. Thanks again, Anja, for your wonderful guidance.
yes, i kept doing this and making up the story in my head of the scared stitches, and one day i thought i have got to share this because it works!! also no seam visible indeed, added bonus !!! thanks for watching!! xxx
Anja, I have a tip for you in case you don't know of this one. It reminded me to share with you when you made your couch cushion with tassels and just kept forgetting. Did you know that if you steam your tassels, they will look very straight and pristine and just have a more professional look to them.
aaahh! yes, I was just waiting for them to 'straighten out' but that will speed it up and look nicer!! Thanks!! xxx
Another good thing other than no seam is that the circle is staying round - no strange corners like in some circle patterns!
Hello there Cindy, do you use this sc for amigurumis toys?
This is the best tutorial I have watched for increasing in a circle😊
you have no idea how thankful i am for this video-i have issues when it comes to memory and computing big numbers in my head and this makes it so much easier!! thank you!!!💗💗💗
You are the only one who has been able to show me this in a way where I end up with a round instead of a hexagon. Thank you so much. Not even my mum who has crocheted for over 60 years could explain it like ypu. A million thanks . You have saved me from pulling my rounds out over and over, bewildered as you why it wasn’t working. Much respect
This is absolutely brilliant! I had been totally stumped as to how to get perfectly flat rounds. Thank you so much for the awesome tutorial!
I’ve been doing amigurumi but I’ve never done a flat circle so thank you for this tutorial! I never thought to count my rows to figure out how many stitches to do with an increase! I love it!!
Glad it was helpful! Thank you for watching Jennifer Hernandez ! Anja xxx 💕🌈
This was magic, thank you, I will be sharing this will all my newbie friends. Mind you I am 50+ and in my all years this finally makes it click.
'Scared stich'. Soo sweet, and easy to remember. Thank you so much.
Glad it was helpful! Anja x
Thank you so much! The idea of the "scared" stitch is wonderful!I FINALLY have a flat circle.
Thank you! I’ve made a beautiful , flat circle without an ugly seam for the first time in 15 years crocheting!
That's wonderful!!!❤ Thank you for watching Tammy Burkey ! Anja xxx 💕🌈
This is fantastic! I always forget how to make a flat circle now I can remember what I was doing even if I set it down!!! THANK YOU SO MUCH!!! I will remember this forever ❤
I'm forever happy I found your video,👍👍 ❤️❤️🌷 🌷 THANKS AGAIN
You're welcome 😊
THANK YOU!! THANK YOU!! THANK YOU!!!!! I CAN MAKE A CIRCLE FINALLY ‼️ I LOVE YOUR LITTLE STORY IT REALLY WORKS😁🌷🌷🌷
Glad it helped!
Omg this just makes sense now. Now i can make hundreds of scrubbies in the round
Anja, you are the only tutorial maker I have found who does things the way I do. I never thought of thinking of the stitch as being scared but do like the anthropomorphism of considering the stitch as being scared.
Thanks for watching my video Wandas Way and keep crocheting. Anja xxx💕🌈💕
I'm new to crochet and this video of yours is the best yet!!!! I finally understand how and when to increase. My daughter wants me to make her a flat circle elephant head with ears and truck holding sunflowers and this really helped me get started. She wants it about two or three feet wide. Thank you so much.
I love love the way you explained the crocheting on the circle.
Love your heavenly hands that make magic, …❤️❤️❤️🌹🌹🌹
Thank you so much! Thank you for watching Skittles31 skittles31 ! Anja xxx 💕🌈
You are a good teacher. Thank-you.
Anja! Thank you very much for sharing this with us. Your style of teaching is just what I need. Loved the “story,” which was actually quite helpful. 💜
Ophelia I can't tell you how grateful I am for this video. Ive literally spent months searching the internet trying to find a way to work circles which don't bow, but all to no avail. Then I finally found this ! Thank you so so much !
You're very welcome! Thank you for watching M Tracey ! Anja xxx 💕🌈
Thank you, I have always got in a muddle with this technique but not anymore. X
Thanks for your great tip. What a great way to remember the increase number by aligning it with the row number.
I spent 2 hours last night watching videos that didn't make any sense. Wake up on a beautiful Sunday morning and find you. This is hands down the BEST explanation of keeping the circle flat. THANK YOU!!!!
Welcome mommaice, so happy you found me, and that my tutorial makes sense to you, thank you, and hey, keep watching! Anja x
2024 and just now discovering this brilliant video. Best explanation of circle increases that I have seen. Thank you.
Glad it was helpful! Thank you for watching @renabritnell5497 ! Anja x
I would also like to thank you for your marbled hexi cardigan tutorials. I hope to start mine soon.

Enjoy watching Anja 🌈😘🌈
Sooo good to know this little story✨❣️💗 always drives me insane trying to remember...so thank you 🙏 for this beautiful tutorial🌷🤗💖
My pleasure 😊 Thank you for watching Celsa Flores ! Anja xxx 💕🌈
Your video changed my life. I was always reluctant to crochet circles because I didn't know where to slip stich the row together (so many instructions say in the top of the chain 2 and I would second guess myself) or where to put the first or last stitch. I would also get flustered trying to remember the increase pattern for each round. Your instructions are so clear and easy to remember. I love the repeat pattern rather than trying to memorize. Now I LIKE crocheting circles and do so with confidence! Thank you so much for sharing your technique and story!!
You're so welcome Megan, so glad my tutorial was useful for you, thank you, Anja x
Finally someone who made sense to me and didnt confuse the life out of me!!💃🏽💃🏽Can't wait to try this method as a 2nd attempt at a circle blanket (first attempt ended up looking like a coral according to my better half)🤗
Best perfect circle story I've heard, I'm actually going to remember the pattern this time haha, thank you!
Glad it was helpful! Thank you for watching Craftin' Me ! Anja xxx 💕🌈
Thank you soo much for the tip........I always get problem in making the flat circle ..............now m sure ur tip will help me alot......thanks again
Ophelia ... I'm sure you won't see this but I have been crocheting only 5 years on and off since my momma passed. I have never been able to crochet a circle without it looking wonky somewhere on it. After your
video I am encouraged to crochet more and even "hubby" said my work was very pretty. I consider myself still a beginner and just venturing out with other projects since the pandemic. We never know what someone's word will do for us! Your circle story is perfect for me ... a 30 year retired elementary teacher.
Thank you and God bless you and your work.
Thank you for watching Karen Smith ! Anja xxx 💕🌈 You are so welcome and remember, the more you are able to practice the better you will get. If you are on Facebook, please join our fantastic crochet community. It's called Ophelia Talks Crochet.
This literally saved my live😭 thank you so much!
I'm so glad Fatin, you're welcome. Anja x!
Oh my goodness. This is the best! Thank you for your adorable story that I'll never forget.
So glad you found it helpful Barbara, Anja x
It's simply brilliant and it just saved my day! Thanks for that. And it is so easy to remember. I really like "the new kid" metaphor. It's so kind
Thank you so much for sharing this method… At first I was super confused, but then understanding the “scared stitch” kicked in, such a fun way to remember! ❤😄
Great Denise, I'm glad it clicked for you, thanks, Anja x
Wow! Perfect explanation. I needed this so badly! THANK YOU! You’re the best!
I am 63 yrs old and have been crocheting since I was a little girl. You easily taught me a knew way. I love your scared story. Yours is the best tutorial by far! Thank you so much. Its perfect!
I lovvvvveeeee your stories and explanation. Thank you for taking the time to do this
Thank you Charissa, I find it's easier to remember, Anja x
It is indeed a superb tip. The new stitch being scared goes in with the previous stitch may sound silly but it is definitely going to be worth remembering the increase in this way. I have had to redo quite a bit sometimes but this tip just has got stamped in my memory. Thank you very much Anja for sharing.
Thank you very much Anja for adding fun into the world of crochet.
Good teachers think of memorable and creative ways to help their students retain and remember what they are being taught. You are an EXCELLENT teacher Anja. (Even Jesus made up stories and illustrations to help people learn what he was teaching - I personally wouldn't call that "silly"). Keep up the good work!
Oh wow, thank you so much! Thank you for watching Elspeth McGarey ! Anja xxx 💕🌈
What a nice story about the scared stitch.you made it easy to follow.thank you.x
Glad it was helpful! Anja x
I was struggling regarding increase is every rows.. Watched two days many videos but finally got the trick. thank you💜💜💜

Very clever! Love the scaredy cat stitch story. 😊
Thank you for explaining this so clearly. All my circles have ended up as hats, and I wanted a blanket. 🤣
Lindyloo37
LOL 😂
Ikr😂 sameeee
LOL. 😂 Thanks for watching my video Lindyloo37 and keep crocheting. Anja xxx💕🌈💕
On the other hand, if you ARE making a hat, start with 8 stitches (instead of 10), and it will curve correctly until you begin the straight sides.
I've been crocheting for over 10 years as a side hobby and never have i ever understood how to make circles as easily as i do now. Thanks for this easy to understand video. Watched it twice and can make awesome flat circles on my own now! Thanks again!
Glad I could help! Thank you for watching Jackie Gonzalez ! Anja xxx 💕🌈
Thank you for helping to understand how to keep my circles flat. I love your story on how to remember when to increase.
I started crocheting 2 months ago and been struggling in doing a flat circle as I am confused with increasing.
But now, I am confident in doing increases. I love how you explained it and I love the stories of each row, it helped me to remember.
"Scared stitch" for the win! 🎉
Fantastic! Thank you for watching Shane Herrera ! Anja x
I love the scared stitches, this is exactly the kind of thing that makes you remember things forever :)
I will never get that out of my head now, four is scared so in with three. Its like 7 ate 9 joke, thanks Anja that cheered me up i have a cold at the moment so this is a pick-me-up when i am ill😃
Thanks for your comment, much appreciated! Keep watching xxx
