  • Did you know you can single crochet in a circle, just by increasing six stitches per row? Like a lot of crochet, it's all about geometry.
    In this video, I show you step by step how to make a perfect flat circle using the single crochet stitch. Warning: I do nerd out a little bit about the math! I'll show you why it works and how to make sure you get a circle and not a hexagon. You'll also get a demo of making a magic circle (or magic ring) to close your starting gap.
    Still having trouble keeping the circle flat? Visit this link for more tips: www.changepathcrochet.com/the...

    Oh my goodness, in my 3 years of crocheting, I always winged it and got a bad result. It was awesome you made one with different colors to show the growth of both situations cuz I was so perplexed. And when you explained the math behind it, I was blown away! So cool. Thank you so much! Super helpful

    I was wondering why my circle was curving even tho I have done this before and restarted 3 times. The mathematical explanation made me realize that it was because I was using double crochet instead of single or half double. The only time I used double was for a project that needed the curve so it was ok. Thanks for the info. I also just like knowing why things work and I understood the increase a bit but never factored in the hight of the stitch

    • @changepathcrochet
      @changepathcrochet  2 місяці тому

      For double crochet, you start with 12 stitches in the center and increase 12 per row in the same way, and for the same mathematical reason. 👍

    Omg thank you for illustrating the increases with a different color. That's the way I understood increasing in a circle, but wanted it to be explained in a video to me, because I wasn't sure if I'm imagining it.
    which I haven't seen anyone explain it like that.
    Everyone would just say inc every stitch in round 2, inc every other stitch in round 3 etc, but never will they say that you can just increase on top of your increase of the previous round!
    Also I wondered why if I made an octagon, it got wavy, so you explained that too. Thanks again

    Excellent information. I am trying to crochet a flat brim for a fedora, but the yarn I desire to use, does not match the yarn for the pattern, so my brim keeps curling. The Pi explanation gives me a direction to go in for calculating my own stitch increase ratio. It won’t be exact, as my brim isn’t a perfect circle, but it’ll be better than trial and error. hi! thanks for the tut. do you happen to know what i should change if my pattern wants me to start with 8 stitches?
    the pattern seems to have too many stitches cause it is not lying flat. i want to restart and found your tutorial. do you think i will get enough stitches if i start with 6 instead of 8?

    • @changepathcrochet
      @changepathcrochet  Рік тому +4

      If you increase by 8 each row it will be wavy. Six is the magic number. What are you making?

  • @20bluelilies
    @20bluelilies 2 місяці тому

    Increasing by 6 each round gives you a gently cupped circle. For a flat circle you need to either start with 7, and increase 7 each round, or you can juggle it in a smaller piece by going 6, 12, 24, then reverting back to 6 increases each round. Depending on tension, starting with 8sc might even be necessary for some crocheters, to achieve a truly flat circle

    • @changepathcrochet
      @changepathcrochet  2 місяці тому +1

      It really depends on the crocheter. I can get a flat circle by increasing only 6 per row. Each crocheter needs to figure out what works for their own way of stitching.

  • @ThePinkCatherine

    This is a fab video thank you! Really appreciate the way you explain things. One question! I'm working on a project where I need a series of flat circles, each one slightly bigger than the next one. My first circle has 12 stitches in it. My next circle I wanted to be slightly bigger. But if I follow the method then by making the next circle one row bigger, I end up with 18 stitches and the circle is too big in diameter. How can I get around this please? I will be making a number of circles, each increasing slightly in diameter.

    • @changepathcrochet
      @changepathcrochet  7 місяців тому

      Hmm... If one more row is too big, then you might try doing a row of slip stitches around the outer row (loosely, without increases, maybe in the back loop only) to make the next circle a half-row larger. Then, do a circle with three regular rows, then one with 3 rows + the slip stitch row, etc. until you have all the circles you want. If that works, please let me know!

      By Chain Two method, do you mean chain 2, then 6 sc in the second chain (instead of starting with a magic circle)? When I do that and then pull the string from the starting slip knot, it does not tighten it, so maybe I’m not understanding.

    • @changepathcrochet
      @changepathcrochet  5 місяців тому +1

      Sure! If you keep putting the increases on top of each other, the edge will turn into more of a point in those locations, and it will become a hexagon instead of a circle. To avoid that, you want to put the increases between the increases in the previous row. Let me know if that helps or if you have any other questions. 🙂

    Holy shrimp I'm so glad I found this video!!! NEVERR knew to stagger! Do you just [sc, inc] then start the round to stagger? Is it that simple?

    • @changepathcrochet
      @changepathcrochet  Місяць тому

      An easy way to do the staggering is to make the odd rows not staggered (like do 7 sc and then increase, all the way around). Then in the even rows, cut the number in half for the first bit. So when you need 8 sc between each increase, you do 4 sc first, then increase, then repeat (8 sc, inc) all the way around until you have 4 sc left, and then you just sc in each of those 4 stitches. The number between the increases goes up by 1 with each row.

    Hiii! Thanks so much for this video! I’m a beginner and I’m trying to crotchet a coaster pattern that has no tutorial as a gift so thanks so much for this video. I did have several questions that I hope you can help me on ❤
    1. I started off with increasing 6 and it didn’t stay flat - you mentioned increasing or decreasing stitches to remedy that. How would the increase/decrease pattern work?
    2. I was lost completely on the circle part when you increased by 1,2,3…. how did your pattern change? Also when I tried increasing (ie putting more stitches into the same hole, I think it started curling up so welp)
    3. How did you change colours so seamlessly? do you have a tutorial on that?

    • @changepathcrochet
      @changepathcrochet  2 місяці тому

      1. If starting with 6 curls up, then try starting with 7 or 8. You will do the same pattern, but increase in every row by the same number of stitches you started with.

    • @changepathcrochet
      @changepathcrochet  2 місяці тому

      2. To increase, you only put 2 stitches into one stitch. It’s the number of stitches between the increases that changes by +1 in every row.

    • @changepathcrochet
      @changepathcrochet  2 місяці тому

      3. I don’t have a tutorial on that, but I believe I carried the yarn under the opposite color stitches (meaning I crocheted on top of the opposite color yarn). When you change colors, switch to the next color when you do the last loop of the previous color stitch.

    In the third row at 5:47 you said “so this next round I need to do two single crochet stitches and then increase”
    I’m not really understanding that part.
    First row: single crochet twice into each stitch (twice in each MEANS increase, right?)
    Second: alternate twice then once
    Third: I’m lost . Do you do; single, single, THEN increase. Single, single, THEN increase?

    • @changepathcrochet
      @changepathcrochet  11 місяців тому +1

      Round 1: 6 sc.
      Round 2: Increase x 6 (or 2 sc in each st).

      You could try doing fewer increases in each row (like 2 or 3 instead of 6).

  • @Noeyjoann
    @Noeyjoann 5 місяців тому

    So to be clear....if I want a circle....each row will have the sc in the next 3 stitches....if its the 3rd round then 2 sc in one st. Start of new round will first have the increase then the singles? Round 10 will have 10 sc then 2 sc in one stitch and on and on. But to alternate placement of the increase (2 sc in a st) to avoid the hexagon shape (unless someine wants the hexagon).

    • @changepathcrochet
      @changepathcrochet  5 місяців тому +1

      Not exactly. R1 has 6 sc. R2 has 2 sc in each st (6 increases). R3 has 1 sc between the increases. R4 has 2 sc between the increases. R5 has 3 sc between the increases, and so on. (So R10 has 8, not 10 sc before the increase.) In the staggered rows, I'm splitting the "in between" stitches between the beginning and end of the row.

      Any hook that is appropriate for the yarn you want to use. My go-to hook is H/5.0mm with worsted weight yarn.

    Since you aren’t using a slip stitch to join each round, and then chaining one to start the new row… how can you see where your beginning stitch is on each round?

    • @changepathcrochet

      Mark the beginning of each round with a stitch marker or a piece of contrasting yarn.

      The shape of your single crochet may be different than mine, so you'll need to experiment a little to see what works for you.
      If it curls up into a bowl shape, that means you need more stitches. Occasionally you may want to add 7 or 8 stitches to a row instead of 6.
      If it's wavy, then that means you have too many stitches, and want to add fewer than 6 in some rows.

    I get it with the staggering…but I lost ya……how many do you begin with on every other row in order to get the amount of stitches you’re supposed to have in that row……….I’m confused………can you make it a little clearer? Appreciate the video though…….. ty😊

      Yea that would be a whole other video. 😊 I think the cleanest way to change colors is to end the row with an invisible join and then start the new color in the same spot.

    If you join on, and then start a new row at each ending you also won't have the hexagon.

    • @changepathcrochet
      @changepathcrochet  9 місяців тому +1

      This would create a seam, wouldn’t it?Also, the hexagon shape will still happen if the increases are in the same spot in every row. Perhaps I’m misunderstanding. Can you explain further what you mean?

    • @vanessamorgan3939
      @vanessamorgan3939 9 місяців тому

      I meant join at the top of your first SC that you made from the row that you're on, being the end of this row. Chain one and start a new row. I have seen this cause a seam in some cases. If not done correctly. This is the way I've always seen it done. Your way is new to me, but it looks really nice! ❤️

    • @changepathcrochet
      @changepathcrochet  4 місяці тому

      Chunkier yarn may change the height/width ratio. Was it curling up into a bowl? You could try starting with 8 sc in the first row and increasing in the same way (+8 in each row) to see if that helps.

    π is 3.14 so each row needs to increase by 6.28...?! Seriously, the directions to make a ball are exactly the same. But I'm just figuring this out and what would a 1/4 stitch look like?

    • @changepathcrochet
      @changepathcrochet  11 місяців тому

      If we’re being precise, each row needs to increase by 6.28318… but crochet is not that precise. 😆 Fortunately single crochet tends to be slightly wider than it is tall, so it seems to work out ok to add 6 stitches in every row.
      I’m not sure what you mean by 1/4 stitch?
