The first individual outside the band to hear the song was sixteen-year-old Kenny Sykaluk of Rocky River, Ohio, who was diagnosed with cystic fibrosis. His mother wrote a letter to the band telling them about her son's terminal condition, and how big a fan he was of Journey. The band flew to his hospital bedside in Cleveland, Ohio at the request of the Make-A-Wish Foundation. Along with a Walkman containing the new track, the band also brought Kenny a football helmet signed by the San Francisco 49ers and an autographed Journey platinum record award. The experience of playing the song for Kenny left Steve Perry and Jonathan Cain deeply affected. Perry said, "As soon as I walked out of the hospital room, I lost it. Nurses had to take me to a room by myself." On the band's episode of VH1's Behind the Music, Cain broke down in tears recalling the event, remarking that "children should not have to live with that kind of pain". Kenny died the next day, with the Walkman still in his hand. The song brought life into perspective for the band and left them humbled. Neal Schon said that Kenny's death affected Journey by making them re-evaluate the issues that were causing friction inside the band itself. In honor of Kenny Sykaluk, the band used the song as their opener for the Raised on Radio Tour.[3]
This is the ultimate song that evokes feelings of freedom and youth for us who grew up in the 80's. I think of driving w the top down, summer, simpler times with no cell phones, endless summers and the smell of fresh grass, sunshine all the time, partying w friends outside all night etc. The emotion and lyrics to this song is the ultimate soundtrack to those days and I wish I could go back!
"STONE IN LOVE'" I watch a lot of reaction videos and I haven't seen anyone react to Stone in Love. It's one of my favorite Journey songs. Also, The Party's Over and Ask the Lonely are two other killer Journey songs that don't get the coverage they deserve. I used to go check out the local cover bands back in the 90's and one of them did Ask the Lonely sofa king good. I miss those days!
I was a casual Journey fan before, and first came across Stone In Love through Brad & Lex reacting to it a couple of years back. Blew my mind. There are others that have reacted to it since - DayOne, SalvoG, Asia & BJ
I have been calling for Amber and Jay to watch Stone in Love for a loooong time now! Their lives will never be the same again! That guitar line and bass reply... Jay will fall outta his chair! 🔥
The story behind this song is heartbreaking. It was originally going to be released on the album, Frontiers. They recorded the song, and took it to a hospital to visit a fan; a little kid whose mother reached out. That kid was the first to hear this song, and he loved it. The kid would eventually die, hand still holding the cassette. The band was very affected by this, deciding against releasing the song on the album. The song was first released by Patty Smythe on the album, The Warrior. Her cover was the first version released. Once the film Vision Quest was made, Journey's version was in the film and on the soundtrack. The sound has a number of memorable songs.
One of early MTV favorite songs Change is also on this soundtrack. Another cool tie in is on the song Don’t Stop Believing lyric A Singer In A Smokey Room is Referring to John Waite.
'Only The Young' soars from its opening note - thus the whole track is a 'boom moment'! One of my favourite bands & one of my favourite songs!❤ Perfect night drive music......
This song was the theme song for the movie Vision Quest with Matthew Modine. I was in wrestling in high school at the time and our coach had us watch the movie to get motivated (it was about a high school wrestler of course). Great memories!
"Only the Young" is a song written by Jonathan Cain, Steve Perry, and Neal Schon of the band Journey. It was featured on the soundtrack to the 1985 film Vision Quest. The song was originally recorded by Scandal, who released it in 1984 on their Warrior album. Journey released their version on January 8, 1985 and later that year it reached #9 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart. It also reached #3 on the Mainstream Rock chart. The song's lyrical theme focuses on young people and the hope and future they all have in front of them.
Amber & Jay, here are some other good Journey songs to react to: "Stone in Love", "Still They Ride", "Any Way You Want It", "Lights", "City of the Angels", "Rubicon", and "Edge of the Blade".
You are so right about it being nostalgic for those of us that were kids in the 80's. I was a teenager in the 80's and it really was amazing. I love seeing young folks react and and enjoy the same music as we did. Some of these get me a little misty eyed. Love you guys!
A couple of an interesting things about this song. It was on the soundtrack to the movie "Vision Quest" about a high school wrestler training to take on the state champion. The movie is very inspirational with a stellar soundtrack. Also, somebody mentioned it below, Journey was working on this album when they heard a boy was very sick in the hospital who was a big Journey fan. The band visited the boy and gave him the first cassette copy among other things. The band members had been going through some friction and this put things into perspective. The band members were sobbing as they left the hospital room. The boy passed away the next day with the Walkman and cassette tape in his hands.
@@Robsan40 Hmm, now that I think about it neither have I. Even though I love the studio version, I love that Tokyo live version more. But if Jay and Amber want to react to it I'll take whatever version they play. ❤ 🙂

Enjoy and embrace your children now because time will fly away and you will realize that those times were the best in your life ❤️. "Only the Young can Say "
I married into a family in the record industry in the Eighties, so I have been truly privileged to meet a ton of musicians and celebrities. During one memorable evening I got to hang with Randy Jackson, at the time he was big on American Idol and he was cool that I wanted to discuss his playing with Journey rather than the show. I have to say that he was one of the most generous and sharing celebrities ever. We were in public and he never once hesitated to recognize and take time with every single person he met, and never rushed them taking pictures or answering questions. I complimented him on the fact and he noted that he was once on the other side looking at his idols and always wanted to act like he would have wanted them to act towards him. Totally class act, and a pretty decent bass player. ✌️
Man you just can't go wrong with Journey. I've seen them in concert four times and will go again! This song is one of those songs that just makes you feel like soaring through the air! Love it!
I saw Journey once--'81, I think; best concert that I've ever been to in my life! I'll never forget it--would love to see them again but don't think it would be the same without Steve Perry. He's one in a million....
I think it was "Behind the Music" that told a story about this song. A young boy diagnosed with a terminal disease got to meet JOURNEY (actually they went to his hospital room) and they played him that song before it was ever released, one of the band members started crying talking about it during the interview.
Hey RSR.....Your musical 'journey" has been so much fun to be a part of. This is a very underrated Journey song. You will soar along with Steve Perry's vocals! Take care!!!!
I love almost everything by Journey, but Steve Perry's voice was especially made for the ballads. I think you'd love their song 'Still They Ride' as much I do.
A few of my favorite Journey songs were ones that Gregg Rolie and Steve Perry sang together. Just the Same Way and Feeling that Way. Great songs from the 70's. The Live version of Mother, Father in Houston is a must listen.
You REALLY NEED to check out "Mother, Father" live in Houston 1981! One of the absolute best live performances of all time. Steve's vocals in that performance are next level!
Class of 87!!! This song embodies the 80s! The recklessness, the parties, first loves, high school graduation, the sad goodbyes. Some of us went straight to college, others left to defend our country and many sacrificed their lives in Desert Storm. This song is a time machine.
Always a pleasure listening to Journey and the incomparable Steve Perry. Amber, I LOVE that Blondie Shirt. I really hope you'll eventually check out "Hanging on the Telephone". It's a short song, but a ROCKER. Pay attention to the vocals at the end, "Hang up, then run to me", love the way she repeats that and the very last time, almost a growl. WOW. It's always been a favorite of mine. Have a lovely day, J&A.
Journey is a band I found on my own. Most of the bands and artists from the 80's were songs I heard on my parents radio or from my family. Steve Perry is an amazing vocalist, and they are a great band. They are on my bucket list of bands to see live.

It's so exciting! Thank you for that gift, Jay and Amber! I think you should delve deeper into Journey's earliest music and react to their beautiful Lights! It's a classic from 1978. Thanks so much!
Another comment went to high school in the 80s graduated in 83 went to college for a few years got married in 86, and had our first child in 89. Yes it was a blessing to be a youth in the 80s I can hardly believe that I was one of them.
There's just something about Journey's music that makes it feel like Spring/Summer. That you just want to roll the top down and drive down the road carefree.

It was FABULOUS!! Steve and Arnel are both wonderful lead singers!! This is one of my favorite Journey songs bc it reminds me of my youth!! YOU MADE ME SMILE!! Blessings everyone 🙋🏻♀️❤️
Hello from a September 1973-born Generation X'er from northeast Ohio. I am a life-long Journey fan. Some might tell you the heartbreaking story behind this song, but I want to mention something else about this song that you likely will not get anyone else to mention; their Frontiers album (which "Seperate Ways" comes from) came out in 1983, and this song "Only The young" was recorded to be on that album. Somehow, the song ended up being left off the Frontiers album. But then, Journey caught a lucky break when the song was selected to be on the soundtrack to the 1985 movie "Vision Quest". So, if not for being on that soundtrack, the song might never have seen the light of day. It's always been one of my favorites. And by the way, you would do well to watch the movie, and maybe even upload your reaction to your movie channel. Cheers from northeast Ohio!
Fun fact: This song was intended for their Frontiers album but got axed. They then sold the song to the band Scandal. Scandal's version is the first commercially released in 1984 on their Warrior album, Journey released theirs the following year for the Visionquest movie soundtrack. Patty Smyth/Scandal's version is good, too.
I think I comment on every Journey reaction. I was lucky enough to see them three times in So Cal in the late 70’s at outdoor venues, Steve Perry’s voice was pure perfection!!!
Hey there RobSquad.....I grew uo in the 80's which was just the best time to be alive....Steve Perry's voice are one that formed part of the soundtrack to our lives even out here in Africa. Great band, great voice, great song......
JOURNEY - " Ask The Lonely " and " Rubicon " 1983 off of the FRONTIERS Album, of of Journeys most popular albums but not the only popular they got many more songs to go 🎸also heavy on guitars and drums. Check these out too.
There's something about Journey's music that just makes you smile. It feels good and makes you feel good! Amber's reaction before the first break, says it all.
On March 15 this year, Journey was in concert in West Valley City, Utah and the performance of this song was magical. Steve Perry isn’t with the band anymore, but the band didn’t lose a beat without him. Great band no matter what.
I originally copied a cassette tape of Journey’s Greatest Hits from the local library, then bought the cassette for my first car. Then, while in the Marines, it was the first CD I ever bought. I made sure to buy another copy after my cd collection was stolen. And finally, I keep it downloaded on my iPhone for times I can’t get a good signal.
Journey‘s ‘Don’t Stop Believing’ has been named the biggest song of all time by Forbes. The 1981 track - which appeared on Journey's seventh studio LP ‘Escape’ - has gone 18 times platinum and officially become the biggest song in the history of music.
I remember hearing this song in the mid ‘80s and loving its vibe. Couldn’t tell what the words were except for the chorus. Was this the song that was in the movie Vision Quest? It has a cinematic quality.
This iis one of my favourite Journey songs. Yes it's a big cheesy 80's pop song, but it's also majestic and the melody just drills into your skull. Neal's solo is fantastic as well. The story behind it is heartbreaking too.

Journey will always be one of my all time favorite bands! I was blessed to see them..(along with Night Ranger and Foreigner) live a few years ago for Journey’s comeback tour with Arnel!
I never knew this until a couple weeks ago. I like their version.
@@wordgiesworld5483Mrs. John McEnroe also did a good cover of Zeppelin's Whole Lotta Love on David Letterman's show. The video is on UA-cam.
Great song! Check out "Don't Stop Believin'," "Ask the Lonely," "Who's Crying Now" and "Be Good to Yourself."
Awesome! Saw them in OKC in ‘80! Great concert!🤘🔥
My first time seeing them in concert was in 1981! One of THE greatest nights of my life. 🎉🎉🎉🎉
I was 19 😊
Saw them in Champaign in 81 on the Escape tour. I was a sophomore in high school. Fantastic concert.
Be Good To Yourself is a must!
Randy, a judge on an old singer competition show was the bass player for Journey. ❤
This song encapsulates the spirit and vibe of the passionate teen pursuit. Happy n free .
Still makes me tear up......so enjoyable to watch y'all listen to this one for the first time.
A good rocker from Journey y'all haven't reacted to yet is my personal favorite, "Stone In Love." It's a Banger!
It absolutely is.
This song always makes me think of Louden Swain running everywhere trying to drop to 168 to wrestle Shute.
Journey‘s ‘Don’t Stop Believing’ has been named the biggest song of all time by Forbes.
The 1981 track - which appeared on Journey's seventh studio LP ‘Escape’ - has gone 18 times platinum and officially become the biggest song in the history of music.
OMG I have missed this song .I love how the guitar is played in this
I remember hearing this song in the mid ‘80s and loving its vibe. Couldn’t tell what the words were except for the chorus. Was this the song that was in the movie Vision Quest? It has a cinematic quality.
All my Louden Swain fans please stand up!!
This iis one of my favourite Journey songs. Yes it's a big cheesy 80's pop song, but it's also majestic and the melody just drills into your skull. Neal's solo is fantastic as well. The story behind it is heartbreaking too.
One of my favorites!!
Vision Quest, what a movie and soundtrack!
The song is called.I'll be all right, do the l.IVE version in Texas.Houston journey journey.Does I'll be all right. And you know, state prairie's gotta deliver. He's gonna stay just gotta like it all rigo , to my guitar around arab question mark
