Michael Anthony's backing vocals are often overlooked with VH...
Hagar always gave Anthony his props for his great singing voice.
Funny, I've been listening to the band since 1978 and I've yet to hear a real fan who didn't recognize and praise Michael Anthony for his crucial vocal contributions to Van Halen.
@@MarkMay-cr6bv funny, what makes you think I'm referring to simply "fans"?
@@chrisoakley5830 he did indeed
spot on
I was blessed in my era of music. Born in the 60s, raised in the 70s, rocked in the 80s....still rocking!! ❤😊😂
I'm right there with you. 1959 was the year I was hatched lol.👍👍🤘🤘. My stratocaster loves Van Halen songs.
THE 70s ROCKED PERIOD
Amen! 1963
@@jeffreyflint6286 I wasn't hatched until November 1971, the VERY SAME MONTH Zeppelin IV was released. I'm so glad I was a Gen X kid.
@@theodoreritola7641 agreed says the old rocker of 65 years of age!🎸👍👍🤘🤘
In 1990 I had son and we named him Samuel Edward . He also grew up loving the music his dad did. I lost him a few years ago but he is always with me and I smile when I hear a song like this. R.I.P. Eddie and R.I.P. to my Sammy.
So sorry for your loss. We also named our son Samuel, last name Edwards. 😊
So sorry 😞 I lost my son in 92' and he used to jump up on the coffee table and rock out with his air guitar 🎸 to all the great 80's and 90's stuff at the time. He was 5. Not a day goes by that I don't miss him. I feel you, brother.
My son's middle name is Edward and I didn't tell my wife until a few years later that I was naming him after Eddie :).
Michael’s angelic background vocals!
I'm sorry for your loss
Apparently this song almost didn't make the album until Valerie bertanelli convinced her then husband Eddie van Halen to add the song because she loved it. Eddie also played keyboards/synths as beautifully as he does the guitar. R.I.P ❤
I saw the OU812 tour in New Orleans. Valerie was the one who introduced the show
I love this song!!
good since its one of their best songs!
Thank goodness she convinced the band to add this masterpeice to the album. This is my favourite Van Halen song along with Love Walks In.
The ABSOLUTE best Van Halen song in my opinion. I can listen to it over and over and then one more time and never get tired of it. Puts me back in a wonderful place. I love my life now but would be tempted to go back to the 80's if given the chance. It was an amazing time to be young, free and happy. I'm happy y'all are finding good music all the time but I feel truly blessed to have LIVED it originally!
Totally agree
Sammy is on fire singing this song. So much passion, power and soul. Miss ya, Eddie.
Love both eras of Van Halen. Different vibes but both were bangin'
"Right Now" is a good one too
they did right now they just didnt do the official video to it which is i believe a do over
The backup vocals from Mike and Eddie are second to none
Both of them always sang circles around Diamond Dave.
@@vbxtc625 Not a chance
A very under rated and forgotten song by Van Halen is called "Humans Being", it is a monster of a song and was written for the movie Twister.
My favorite Hagar-era song hands down.
It's also part of the reason Sammy left the group
@@user-gb1if9or7n Because of this song???
I liked Seventh Seal too
Sammy is one of the greatest ! Hell of a nice guy also. He's lived the life
You guys have got to do summer nights. That's the very first song that they worked on on their very first day with Sammy. The studio version, you feel the magic that sparked. The live version, you feel the love and fun they have.
Agreed!! Great song!
Agree. Would love them to do the live version.
💯 Absolutely!!! 🔥
I still throw that on the jukebox when I happen to hit a happy hour!
My cousin in law sailed with Sammy years ago and told me he was a regular nice guy. Down to earth kind of man.
HAGAR was SO GOOD, LIVE and solo!!! Saw him at the old Reunion Arena, here in Dallas, and he was climbing in the RAFTERS!!! I LOVE Van Halen & Van Hagar, too!! I just think they BOTH sounded SO GOOD!!! Thanks for reacting to this one!! Brought back GREAT SUMMER MEMORIES!!! HUGS, YA'LL!! RIP, EDDIE! YOU ARE SO MISSED!
Best concert ever was Sammy Hagar I Can't Drive 55 for me in St. Louis. He played for more than 3 hours and climbed the rafters. It was an ah-mazing experience.
@@arepurposedlifewithlaura1496I attended the same show in SF. I still have my concert sweatshirt with the glow in the dark "I Can't Drive 55" on the back 🚫
Thanks guys a memory from my past. I had forgotten how good VH was. RIP Eddie.
Welcome to the "Power Ballad," a staple of '80s music.
This song is why I roll my eyes at anyone who says "Van Halen, not 'Van Hagar.'" Sammy's the better singer, the better songwriter, and is just as good a frontman, as far as showmanship. He's is in 70s, now, and he still sounds just like this. The song is probably my favorite of theirs: love the atmosphere of the intro, Sammy's vocals, and, you didn't mention it, but it's worth mentioning: Michael Anthony's backing vocals, which are clutch. Top it off, it's just catchy as hell. Great song, period.
You forgot Sam Halen
Jay & Amber, Rip to the Greatest Guitar Player ever, Eddie Van Halen!!!
Eddie was Great...! But let's not get carried away...
David Gilmour, Santana, Stevie ray, Mark Knopfler to name a few contenders....

@@mikeskinner45 Absolutely...! Legend..!
This particular Van Halen song always makes me think of Saturday afternoons. It’s relaxed but has a driving beat, so it’s like the energy of a Saturday - different from the weekday grind, but not quite the mellow energy of a Sunday. It’s right in between, and it’s beautiful.
Plus it’s very much an 80s tune, from 1988. All the pop culture of the 80s come to mind when I hear this.
The entire album is a vibe. I dunno why but it gives me a Florida feel, and I'm from Australia I've never been there so go figure
The original Van Halen fans crapped all over Sammy because he wasn't DLR (as if it was Sammy's fault Dave left the band!). I get it -- no one likes to see their favorite band change. But the fact is that Van Halen's music was much hookier (and therefore better, in my view) with Sammy, and Sammy's vocals are vastly superior to Dave's.
Yep! I was 13....this is the album that got me into VH. Miss sammy version....great underrated stuff. Band gelled together perfectly off the bat I thought .
This song and Love Walks In were two power ballads that raised the bar. ❤
I LOVED this song back in the late 1980s. I was just immediately transported to my high school years blasting this on a boom box in my backyard during the summer of 1988! Just an epic song!
MY FAVORITE VAN HALEN SONG EVER ❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
If you guys haven't listened to "Finish What Ya Started" then you should check it it's got a great beat.
The story about how the song came about is pretty interesting as well.
Yeah it's one of my favorites
@@jmac4271 Yeah it is.
...and Alex playing and unique sound on the drums!!😍Great song!! Thanks! 🙂
GREAT song - the keyboards, the background harmonies, Sammy wailing away.....what else could you possibly want in a song?
DLR no voice, just a showman. Sammy brought depth and talent to the band.
Sammy is such an awesome singer, musician and front man. I swear, he always seems like the happiest, most blessed and fun, cool guy STILL. He was sort of overshadowed being after Dave and in the shadows of Eddie. He's always had one of the best rock voices and still does. The Red Rocker! VH really lucked out with Sammy as lead singer. They complimented each other so well and their partnership took them all to even higher levels!
Best Of Both Worlds next!
one of their best, great vocals and guitar
Running with The Devil in was my favorite tune to play loud!
1978 The good ol 1970s Amber
@@theodoreritola7641 absolutely
Oh, yes! That's a song you put in the player, and roll your windows down go cruising down the street. ❤
After all this time and all those albums it's probably still their best song!
@@karenduncan2478 we would bring our speakers outside next to the pool and crank it loud and swim!
Love this song and Dreams. I’d love to see you react to Van Halen’s very first hit, You Really Got Me. It’s hard driving rock.
From the 70s AMBER Dance the night a way V,H
@@theodoreritola7641another excellent choice
Yes, please! AMAZING cover rendition of the Kinks song!
One of the most well written songs in history
OU812 was an awesome album! "Finish what ya started" ."Cabo Wabo," "AFU Naturally Weird," "Feels So Good" "Black and Blue" all bangers!
Black and blue is my favorite from the album.
So proud to of grown up during the era's of Van Halen! Without Eddie I would have never picked up guitar!
If you liked this song, try "Love Comes Walking In" and "That's What Dreams are Made of"
"Finish what ya started" one of my favorite riffs ever on a Van Halen album. Cool groove as well!
Chills with this song. Ton of memories
Love your hair, Amber! Looks fantastic!
I agree! Love it.
This song is on that notorious list of Rock songs that have a great guitar solo that is frustratingly short.
One of Van Halen's best . This entire album rocks .
And you are spot on, Jay, regarding Hagar's voice. The dude can wail. He did a live performance of another VH song -- Right Now -- not too long ago on The Howard Stern Show. Sounded great. Blew everyone in the studio away. And me, too.
Grew up with David. Matured with Sammy. Love them both.
Hello again from a September 1973-born Generation X'er from northeast Ohio. This came out in 1988, and has always been one of my favorites, both as a Sammy Hagar fan, and as a Van Halen fan. You will never see this kind of talent today! Also, I got to see them in concert in August 1991, and they were amazing. Cheers from Canton, Ohio!
Yep! I was 13.....got into VH with this album. Gen x best era we had! Miss our youth then!
@@phildodson6141 , I miss it too! Thanks for saying hello. Cheers!
Hello you two❤
I love Van Halen thanks for sharing 😊
ERUPTION 1978 the good ol 70s Jay n Amber
Sensacional Van Halen que voz guitarra bateria 👏👏👏👏👏👏
Jay & Amber, you'll love their "You Really Got Me" !!! (The Kinks cover)
They did a fantastic cover of it! Seems like time just flew by. I bought that album when it came out in 1978. I was 19 years old lol. Far out man!
1:55 - “Oh.. Never Mind, Let’s get it” 🎸 I love that 🎼
tyvm for the reaction. Sammy has great vocals.
First 10 years with David Lee Roth was bangin’ and next 10 years with Sammy Hagar rocked just as much!! You can’t go wrong with any version of VH (except maybe the few various singers they tried after the Hagar era)
I could not disagree more. I cannot think of one Hagar-led recording of VH that I like today. It's tough to follow the legend himself.
@@Spo-Dee-O-Dee - Neither Roth or Hagar had what I consider great voices, but the material also dropped significantly after 1984. Compare Roth's final single of "Hot For Teacher" with the first Hagar single of "Why Can't This Be Love" and enuf said.
Totally agree, don’t know why fans of VH argue about the different eras… They were both great 🤷🏽♂️
@@drummerboy2834 - The answer is literally right above yours.
@@shyman99 that’s not an answer, that’s your opinion… But the world would be a boring place if everyone was of the same opinion 🤷🏽♂️
This album was released on this day in 1986!!!
Ou812 was 1988
1988
I think you meant “5150”🤨
@@nickdilisio5886And OU812 still sounds great in 2NE2NE-FOUR😉
Instantly hit Like because I knew you were going to LOVE this song...
This album came out when I was 10 years old and I Love it as much today as I did then. ❤
This song brings back so many memories... my senior year of High School. 5150 was THAT album....
One of the best Van Hagar songs imo 🎸
My all time favourite van Helen track, thank you for reacting to it, so glad you two lovely people enjoyed it, keep rockin
This is one of the better Van Hagar tunes.
Finish what you started, another one from this same album OU812! Great album from my high school days!
This is one of my favorite Van Halen songs...great choice!
I was very fortunate to have seen both versions of VH live but by far the Van Hagar era concerts were absolutely great! This song in particular was stellar .. RIP EVH
BANGER! 🔥
This is my Van Halen. I was 9 when Sammy took over so this is what I grew up on. Saw them in 1995 in Hartford. Amazing comcert.
Never get tired of hearing this Van Halen classic and it's pure gold!! RIP EVH!!!!! This rock universe misses you and your expert guitar mastery!!!!!
P.S. Next song from VH, if you get the chance should be either I'll Wait or Dancing In The Streets(cover of the Martha and the Vandellas classic song)!!
Favorite band of all time!!!!
Que grandes músicos!! armonías , voces, instrumentos y energía . Solo Van Halen puede sonar asi
My favorite Van Halen song
The harmonies are awesome
RIP Eddie!! So glad Ed and Sammy made up!! Always love Michael Anthony!! Great underrated voice! ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️
I loved Van Hagar Pop music
I loved Van Halen Rock music
🤘👽🤘
Love me some Sammy VH!
You should check out "Finish What Ya Started" which features a great funky feel and Eddie playing some mighty chicken pickin guitar 🎸
This song is great, but Michael Anthony's vocals make it perfect.
Another great reaction! I love all iterations of Van Halen. And I think you’d love seeing their live version of “Love Walks In.” Eddie plays keys in concert so Sammy sings and plays lead guitar. Nice little switch up to see. So much talent!
Yes...this is a sweet gem of music right here.
I LOVE Van Halen! I liked both David Lee Roth and Sammie. But Roth is still my favorite. But Sammie did awesome on this album!
IIRC this song came off OU812.
@@thejoshman3843 Oops, my bad. I was thinking of “Why Can’t This Be Love”.
Sammy was a local boy. Grew up in Fontana CA. I know people who went to school with him. My friends dad went to elementary with him. I saw the class photo. All the boys had a buzz cut or a nice haircut parted in the side. NOT SAMMY!He was the only onewith a pompadour greaser haircut! He stood out way back then! A future rocker! I have seen Van Halen three times and Sammy solo seven tumes! Love him!
I love this song and album so much. I love the 2 albums previous to this, and the 2 after as well. Just amazing. Please do more. Love your reactions.
one of my favorite Van Halen songs
I love this song alot. It's probably my favorite Van Halen song
It's my favorite too ❤❤❤
Have you guys heard of “Let’s go all the way” by Sly Fox? Awesome 80s song. I think you two would like it!
Great suggestion. That song is funk, pop, soul, rock, ska, R&B, all rolled up into one.
One of my favorite Van Halen songs, the vocal harmonies are just crazy good. And that's on top of the usual instrumental goodness we expect from Van Halen.
Don't know if you already reviewed Dance the Night Away, but that's a good one for the vocal harmonies too.
Love seeing your reaction to this song. Graduated in 90 and this was a staple of any party playlist of the late 80's and clear into the 90's. Still a classic!
I someone would request a reaction to "Ice Cream Man" from Van Halen's debut album. There's no video just studio recording.David Lee Roth sings It's a cover
Oh yeah!!! It's fantastic
Van Halen was always great, but when Sammy was with them, it was a whole new level.
Amazing song from an Amazing Album!🤘🎸🥁🎵
Haha this song is awesome. Listening to it with you two makes it all the better.
I know I'll get killed, but I love Van-Hagar, never could tolerate DLR.
Check out "Finish What You Started"
I don't understand the all the hate for Van Hagar? My first VH album was Carnal Knowledge! ( this during the grunge Era when being a VH wasn't cool no matter who was lead singer..)
I agree. I liked Van-Hagar so much better as well.
@@danielmankowski922 VH purists are worse than metal gatekeepers. You just have to take them with a grain of salt. They're angry little old men.
Not gonna kill ya. But I prefer DLR. More personality and an underrated singer.
🤘🤘🤘RED ROCKER🤘🤘🤘
RIP to the great one, EVH...!
I love that y’all love this era of music
Keep rockin kids
I’m going to the Sammy Hagar concert this summer. It’s a celebration of the Van Halen albums he did. Him and Michael Anthony together doing some great VH songs! Go see them!
DANCE THE NIGHT A WAY 1978
My favorite version of Van Halen. Sammy Hagar was the much better singer, in my opinion! 🤟😎
Sammy might have the better voice but he can't touch David as a front man. He gave the band its attitude
@paulobrien9572 Yezzz indeed he did!
Sammy was Final Boss!! 😂
They're just 2 different bands. With David they were rock and with Sammy they were pop. It's apples to oranges.
Nope. David Lee Roth is underrated as a vocalist.
Yes, Jordan, that moment was epic. Great reading that this made it on the album. Nice rock ballad.
I so love the background vocals of Eddie & Mike
“Dream”is the best song I’ve ever heard them put out I guarantee you you’re gonna love the video.
WoW!! What a voice! I've heard this song Of course, but never SEEN him do it. 💟That's some amazing sound coming out of a Guy! Dam Sam?! ✌️
Van Halen
Love walks in
When I listen to When it's love I always listen to Why can't this be love too. :)
The 5150 tour was my first concert and after many, many concerts later STILL my favorite. It was magical. 😊 "Best Of Both Worlds" Jordan, I'm telling ya. 🤘😝🤘
Love walks in - another ballad worth a listen
Entire album is great!!! 🙌🏻
Notice in the video, during the backup vocals, it rarely shows Michael Anthony
Yeah…🤦♂️
I *love* this reaction. After Jay declares it's a ballad I thought to myself "ummm...Wait until you get to Sammy's 'Hyahh!!'. Sure enough Jay says, "Oh! Never mind. Let's get it!" Classic!
One of their best songs!
So awesome to see you guys getting into a band I’ve enjoyed since the late 70s. Great review! David and Sammy had their individual vocals and stage presence and they rocked it with VH.
The great Michael Anthony on backing vocals.
