If anyone asks you why does Steve Perry has the greatest rock voice, just play any song from this concert. MOTHER, FATHER is just on another level.

It's amazing that Steve Perry could sing like this through an entire concert, night after night. What a gift to be able to hear a song performed like this.
Yes, it was a gift to see it performed live. I had no idea what rabbit hole I was going to be going down, about three weeks after this Houston Concert in November 1981 at the Los Angeles Western Forum when I was 15 years old. It was my best friend that wanted to go and bought the tickets. I knew the usual album rock radio hits but knew little else. I was already being blown away within the first couple of songs and falling for all of them as a band of musicians, but especially Steve Perry and his stratospheric level voice along with his cute and charismatic stage presence. Then this song. As I have described so many times over the years, I was mesmerized, and then the end with that last note of his, metaphorically, my mouth wide open, my jaw hit the floor in awe. Literally in awe. I remember that moment so clearly, and this Houston recording is so similar so I get to experience it again and again whenever I want. Literally changed my life, for the Love I had for the music and his Voice, and everything else a 15 year old girl with an ultra huge crush would have. Their music still gives me chills to this day.
This whole concert is Top Notch!! And this song is what us Classic Journey fans call a ...... 'Masterpiece' of performance!!!
Fun Fact - This song wasn't done in the whole tour, only a very few cities got to hear 'Mother Father' perform live!! I'm so grateful that it was recorded!!
A little background on this, Steve himself had said that this is one of the hardest songs vocally for him to sing. I think mainly because of the runs and different ranges he has to hit within the song. Yet, he does it effortlessly. Steve's voice is a masterclass!
I feel that people tend to forget what great songwriters Steve, Jon and Neal are. Incredibly talented musicians 🎶

I watched an interview with the keyboardist Johnatha Cain, from just a few years ago, and the album version was sang by Steve Perry in ONE TAKE! he sang it once and that was it and it was album perfect!
Journey said in an interview that Steve did this song in 1 take when they recorded it! He is just so amazingly talented ❤❤❤ There will never be anyone that will ever come close to Steve’s talent and ability to make you feel the passion and emotion of every word sung. Steve is a once in a lifetime singer!❤❤
There is one Very Talented Singibg Drummer who is so Damn Close to Steve in this Song. You'd think Steve had this Song for Journey to keep alive forever. This Song Mother Father other Singer is Deen Castronovo, yes with Journey take a listen
This is one take too, no do overs when you're live.
Steve Perry once said that this was the toughest Journey song to sing, yet he still kills it on this live performance. Just another amazing performance by one of the best voices of all time. You have a few of those "once in a lifetime" voices, and then there are even fewer "there will NEVER be another like them" voices, and Steve is definitely in that latter category.
As far as the guitar work goes... Its funny, but when you hear conversations about the best guitar players, Neal Schon of Journey often doesn't get mentioned which is a bit of a travesty to me, as he is one of the best in my opinion. Anyway... I've been looking forward to seeing you two react to this, and I'm so glad you enjoyed it! Your reactions continue to be among the very best and I can't wait to see what's next!

On your statement here. I absolutely agree with you about Neal. I also wonder why there's not much mention when people talk about great singer/guitarist combos. Many mention Roth and Eddie, Tyler and Perry etc.. in my opinion Neal Schon and Steve Perry are one of, if not the greatest combos ever. They compliment each other so well. Neal sings as beautifully on his guitar as Steve does vocally.

Older Journey is so, so good (and overlooked). You two should also check out, and review another one from this earlier period called "Feelin' that Way/Anytime". Its a banger as you'd say.
I like the Midnight Special version best for that one.
Journey had that whole package: outstanding vocals, great instrumental backing, and good feeling vibes. It's a big reason why music from that era was, and still is, so good that people keep coming back to it.
This song was sadly about Neal Schon's home life and written by Neal Schon, Steve Perry, and Jonathan Cain. I saw Journey twice live in concert at McNichol's Arena and they sang and played that beautiful every song and yes they sang, "Mother, Father" which made people cry and our lighters were lit and shining for this entire song! I was blessed to hear the Infinity Tour and Frontiers Tour at McNichol's Arena and both tours rocked the entire sold out tours! in Denver!
It was the 80s...people wore all kinds of stuff lol.

Johnathan Cain did that solo keyboard to allow Steve Perry to catch his breath, due the difficulty of the vocal range & power that was needed for Steve to sing this song.

Been listening to Journey with Steve Perry for 46 * years, never tire of the "Voice". By far my favorite song........... By all means please listen to all live songs from Mr. Perry,
A masterpiece at every level. The studio version does not include the piano solo at the end, this was the band's way to introduce their new keyboards player Jonathan Cain to the audience. Founding member keyboards player Gregg Rolie was burned out on touring and retired. Jonathan Cain had toured with Journey with their opening act The Baby's, so he was familiar with their vibe, and of course they were familiar with him. Jonathan subsequently was an integral part of their hits from both the "Escape" and "Frontiers" albums.
First time coming across this Journey song today! Steve Perry has an unbelievable voice
I was shocked the first time I saw them. They were such great live band. Steve's voice is beyond the bar. And, all the band are great on their instruments.
Was at this concert in 1981 in Houston. What I didn't know then was how iconic of a performance it would be. Steve Perry was perfection and fit perfectly with his bandmates. Remember, this is 100% LIVE. No autotune or computers. Men, instruments, and a voice. It is reported that Steve Perrry did the studio version of this song in ONE take. Check it out. Still they Ride is another great live version at this same concert.
The amazing thing about Journey that I have noticed is they sound practically identical to their studio recordings. Musically, vocally, there's almost no discernible difference. That is a rare and special uniqueness, and incredibly impressive.

I saw Journey live in 1981 at the Great Western Forum in Los Angeles. Loverboy open for them and I will tell you that was one very enjoyable convert. We had floor seats but everyone stood on their seats the whole show. Steve was at his peak then and was so good.

Steve Perry remember this is a concert, and he runs from one end of the stage to the other end of the stage back-and-forth nonstop as he is singing songs, and dance in a long, twirling whatever he’s doing because he loves to perform for his fans and you never could tell that he was running all over the place
That’s when bands were awesome members could actually play instruments no computers singers didn’t have special microphones. You hear what is coming out of that mouth and that is the mouth of Steve Perry better known as “The Voice”
Last year he was voted for the billboard, best rock singer of all time that is a huge award
There’s been nobody like him cents he not only has a great singing voice, but he’s a good guy. He never did really speak badly about band members, but they sure do you like to throw out darts at him.

@@overthetop....speakingof4337 Only one Grammy nomination. They gave them a plaque in the Grammy Hall of Fame for DSB a few years ago when it was inducted into The Library of Congress. I prefer to call it the hall of shame in that those are the songs that should have a Grammy but don't.
The piano solo at the end was just that, a piano solo. It is not part of the song itself but instead acted as a transition into the bands next song, Who's Crying Now.

Sensational Steve Perry never disappoints. What an iconic band also. He is one of a very very few that sounds the same live as in the studio.Definetly he and Freddie Mercury were the greatest singers from late 70s well into the 80s.
I disagree. What sets Steve apart is that he doesn't sound the same live as in the studio. He sounds better live. He also changed how he approached every song differently in every single show. Most performers sing their songs the exact same way live as they did on the record. Not Steve. You KNEW it was live because it was always different than the record. Perry also sang with more power live than on record. Freddie can't touch Steve, IMHO. He lacked control of pitch and vibrato. He was a great showman, though.

There are so many songs that I think should have been just as hard as this one like Suzanne, Frontiers, Edge of the Blade but Steve did say this one was the hardest. All of their music and Steve’s solo work is off the chain. I am a Perry girl from the beginning in 1978, and I still worship this man🥰

Will never forget that show. My friends and I planned on cruising down to Houston (and telling our parents we were sleeping at each other's houses; hey, it was high school!). In the end, we didn't make the trip, but are thankful the stellar performance eventually appeared on DVD years later. Wish Journey was still like this instead of a greatest-hits machine with absolutely nothing new in the live setting.

Also, "When You Love a Woman", "Girl Can't Help It." "Still They Ride".. Out of dozens of reactions I've watched, you may be the first one who actually gets this song in its entirety: the message, mood changes, instrumental fills, vocals, energy... and it's freaking live!! Perfection. BTW, the piano at the end has nothing to do with "Mother, Father". It's just a little solo. Piano, guitar and drums each have a short solo in this concert.

The studio version of ‘mother father’ Steve did it in ONE take! And then walked out of the studio. Steve is absolutely the GOAT. Jon Bon Jovi gave him the nickname “The Voice”. At the time, there was always an argument around HS as to who had the best rock voice; Steve or Freddie Mercury. In an interview with Freddie, the reporter asked him who he thought had the greatest voice in the business. Freddie said, you should talk to Steve Perry!

I heard - anecdotally - that this was Neal Schon's favourite guitar solo to play.
Live versions always always better.

Steve Perry’s vocal range is unmatched. His ability to match and sometimes make it better live than the album version. Checkout Lay It Down his vocal range is insane. This song is on the Escape album. Also checkout his solo work. The album Street Talk the song She’s Mine. The album For The Love Of Strange Medicine the song Anyway. The 2018 album Traces where he is in his 70s, still delivering powerful emotional vocals. The song Easy To Love - Traces. The Christmas album The Season he totally delivers the holiday feeling. He is a master of his craft. One last thing checkout the Journey video I’ll Be Alright Without You. He harmonizes with Neal Schon’s guitar. Totally beautiful!

The sad part is that Steve Perry (lead vocals) has not performed w/ Journey since 1986 (the tour for 'Raised on radio')... and this concert filmed on the 1981 'Escape' tour in Houston, Texas is one of the few ones w/ Steve Perry filmed professionally for us to enjoy today.
Perry did record 1 more Journey album 'Trial by fire' (1996), but a hip injury in '97 ended any possibility of him returning to tour... he spent the next 2 decades in seclusion while Journey carried on without him.
Journey did release a live DVD in 2001 w/ then-singer Steve Augeri singing all the classic songs from the Steve Perry-era.
There is also a DVD 'Live in Manila' by Journey that was recorded and filmed in 2009, featuring current singer Arnel Pineda, and most of the live Journey clips today feature Arnel Pineda on vocals.

I had every Journey album available. I just recently gave my stereo to my grandson along with all my albums. Made his day. I love mother father. Not many people heard of it. Saw them live 1979
