- Hello friends!
I’m Elisabetta, an Italian watercolor artist with a passion and a curiosity for art supplies and pigments.
Today we are swatching and comparing 5 different brands of Rose Dore: Winsor & Newton, Old Holland, Sennellier, Michael Harding, and Wallace Seymour.
Rose Dore is a peachy pink with a yellow undertone, but each brand has a different formulation and interpretation. This is way is so interesting to swatch and compare them.
Rose Dore is perfect for painting florals, skies, and portraiture.
Come swatch with me! And comment please!

I am fascinated by how different they are yet sharing a name. I only own the W & N one and don't think I've ever used it - like you I was charmed by the name. As I paint mainly landscape I won't succumb to more but can see it would be useful in portrait or still life. Thank you for another detailed overview where you give so much more useful information about paint qualities that goes way beyond just showing its swatched colour. Many thanks.
Thank you!! You are very very kind! I would try the W&N version in sky….I will have a go!!
Beautiful colour. The Old Holland immediately made me think of English roses...so romantic
Thank you. Yes the Old Holland is so romantic! That’s the right word!
WOW! What a difference. I use the W & N which is lovely. I do not like the Sennelier at all and I have not heard of the other brands.
I also have W&N in my palette! That’s all you need 😃
Thank you 🙏 And I love your sketches ❤
Thank you Wendy. You are always so kind!
I have the Winsor & Newton rose Dore in a half pan , I love it a lot .
Thanks for sharing. It is absolutely delightful, isn’t it?
hiii... i just stopped here for sennelier rose dore madder lake pr255 as i wanted to add it in my palette as a warm red option(as its a trustable lightfast pigment i guess) and yes i would love to see the comparison of pigment pr255 in future. Thanks for this video and for that beutiful sketch demo . 😊
Thank you so much ☺️ for your kind words! I will absolutely make a comparison of PR255….
Hi Elisabetta. I have the WN version. I have never used it in one of my palettes but have come close a couple of times. The reason I don’t use it much is because it comes out of the tube so different than other paints. It is hard to describe but it is thick and seems like it takes some effort to re-wet. It just paints different than other colors, leaving a residue. But I have always liked the color itself. And by the way the Old Holland version featured in your video is so smooth, what a wonderful color. Ciao ciao!
Hi, my watercolour friend! I agree, Old Holland is very smooth and super easy to rewet!! It’s a lovely colour with great potential for diverse uses. Thanks for your comment 😄
I do own the W&N & Sennelier one.
Love both shades.
Would use it on cheeks, around the eyes.
Around the eyes is interesting! I like warm shadows in portraits. Thank you !
this is so cute, its wonderful ❤❤❤
Thank you! ❤️❤️have a lovely week!
Hello from Trinidad. Love that you are playing calypso!
Hi!!! I had an album by Harry Belafonte when I was little and I used to listen to it non stop! So I have a taste for Calypso ❤️
Beautiful colors. Kudos to old holland, but they are all beautiful.
Yes I really like them too, also the very weak but fascinating version by Wallace and Seymour. Thank you for sharing Sergio.
ooh, looking forward to this one
The first color I tried with the name was by winsor and newton and I loved it so much I didn't even think to try other brands 😅 loved your painting 🥰
I’m glad to know you have it and use it! Such a different colour…thanks for your kind comment!
Beautiful. Love the Winsor & Newton and Old Holland versions here. I have the Da Vinci (PV19/PR188) Rose Dore Quin., which is quite vibrant like Sennelier's in masstone and dilutes to more of the W&N version.
Thank you!! We have the same preferences! Have a nice week!!
@@WatercolorElisabetta you too!!!
Oh wow, never thought they would be this different. The only one I saw before the video was the Winsor und Newton one. I've mixed it myself, because the color ks really beautiful. Never thought that some versions would be that dark. In my imagination rose dore would always be a delicate color
The pitment of madder genuine is NR9
Best wishes 💜
Thank you for the pigment info! I was a bit puzzled too by the most intense versions! Have a lovely week!
@@WatercolorElisabetta Thank you 💜 you as well
Agree, W/N is the nicest, also Old Holland. I don't imagine Rose Dore being as intense as Sennelier or Harding versions.
For me too it was surprising to see such vibrant interpretations of Rose Dore….i prefer the more delicate versions. Thank you for sharing!
I own the W & N of Rose Dora but I must say that I really like the Old Holland better!!!
They are both very pretty! My favourite ones. So soft and delicate!
Love rose dore. I only have Da Vinci and Sennelier brand.
Interesting! How’s Da Vinci?? It’s a brand I have never tried!
@WatercolorElisabetta beautiful, it is pv19 and pr188. Of the ones you tried today, I like the MH one. I prefer the more intese colors because you can always add water to make them weaker, but you can't really make a paint stronger.
@@reneaclark7689 you have a point here! 👌
I missed this 😅
Here you are! 😍

I wonder how alizarin gold by Da Vinci compares to these
Hi Jose! Unfortunately here in Italy it is very difficult to get hold of Da Vinci Watercolor….so I have checked online. It looks like a very beautiful colour. They also have a Rose Dore more similar to that (I think) to W&N in formulation, whereas the Alizarin gold uses yellow ochre will Alizarin Crimson hue. So maybe not identical but very pretty indeed! Do you own it?
Another great comparison! I have the MH version on my "maybe buy" list. I don't need it, but it's lovely. So are all the others, even though the Sennelier really looks more like an orange. I would love a PR255 comparison, by the way.
Hi Sonya! I agree PR255 deserves a comparison! Thank you for commenting 🤩
While I love the color of Winsor and Newton's Rose Dore, I'm disappointed by how weak it is, especially considering that it's a series 4 color. It looks diluted, even when used it full strength. Lovely but a poor value for your money.
Hello Ilah! I personally find it a very pretty colour, but the beauty of this world is that everyone of us has their own preferences!! Thank you for sharing!
