I've had both, KTM and Aprilia and the Tuono Factory is much more refined than the Super Duke. This perfect package and the howling sound puts a big smile on your face, every time you ride it and more like on the KTM.
Because you feel absolutely secure and have the feeling that this bike is always capable to do much more than you are able to do.
Even on the Stilfser Joch in the Alps with its very narrow serpentines, the Tuono gives you that perfect stable feeling and a lot of trust. The KTM is far more unstable, more than ever on bumpy roads. If you are a Power Cruiser, you can take the Super Duke. If you are a sports driver, you should always prefer the Tuono Factory.

I know that lots of people don't like the KTM style, but jeez, could the Kwaka be uglier? It looks like they made it as ugly as they could and then smacked it with a frying pan!
And if I'm going to be spending all that money, I think I want it to be something more than "Just another UJM".
And I'm interested in a road bike, not a track bike. And the reason I want a road bike is that I'm "getting on a bit", so I want a bike that is, above all, fun. having to have the engine turning at 8,000 revs is not my idea of fun. TBH, being associated with the (predominantly, not exclusively) elitist Ducatisti fills me with the same level of ennui as being associated with BMWs. It's not necessarily something that would break the deal, but it'd have to be a whole lot of better to persuade me.
OTOH, KTM seem to have hit the sweet spot of "yawn, it's a UJM" and "yawn, it's just more Italian exotica being ridden by some twat from accounting" (and I've certainly met more than enough of THOSE.
And add into that mix is the fact that the SDR is the only V twin in the field, and I've got a very soft spot for those Vs, and I have a good idea of which will be under me in about 8 months' time. None of them! I'm waiting for the SDGT.
But, I will be test riding those that I can. Those that won't let me test their €20,000 machine, but expect me to buy it, sight unseen, can go and F**k themselves...sideways.

Hi Glenn, I can really understand your choice concerning design, brakes and chassis. But don't you think that the 1299 Panigale and den SF V4S are simply too loud nowadays? More and more roads are closed due to noise disturbance from motorcycles. And the laws are becoming more and more strict. If we want to avoid to sit an silent E-Bikes in the future, we should all care about our motorcycles being to too loud. And 106 dB just in engine idle are M U C H too loud!
And there is one other thing: why should I purchase a 208 BHP Power Naked if I have less than 140 BHP below 10.000 rpm and not so much torque, either?
If you are rinding narrow country roads or if you go to the mountains, the Ducati is just much less powerful than an Aprilia Tuono because you can never reach the highest rpm where the SF V4S reaches its abnormal power and acceleration.
The Ducati's characteristic is made for race track use only. And if you like to go there, your already purchased 1299 Panigale is the much better bike to ride on!

@@Mr100asd Hi Glenn, okay, you can be happy to be a US citizen according to noise limits. We here in good old Europe have some strict regulations about the sound pressure produced by a motorcycle.
In idle mode, the SF V4S has 106 dB, which is really a lot. Soon, we will also have a regulation about the sound in idle mode just because of bikes like the Ducati and that drives me crazy, you know.
I think you should keep your 1299 because the motor of the V4 of the SF is a castrated dog below 10.000 rps and afterwards an absolute hellhound.
This characteristic is not suitable for a Power Naked bike. There's a significant lack of torque below 10.000 rpm and the bike feels more like a 750 ccm than a 1100 ccm.
I would really suggest you to have a longer test ride with the Streetfighter before your purchase.
The only thing, I would prefer the SF over your Panigale would be that the Naked Bike is much less demanding and easier to handle and it's seat position is much more comfortable than on the Pani.

I've tested all three models intensively, now: Ducati 1100 Street Fighter V4 "Normale", Kawasaki Z H2 and KTM 1290 Super Duke R 3.0
If it's all about driving pleasure, handling, stability, preciseness and riding comfort, the absolute clear No. 1 of these three is the Ducati. She put's a smile on your face every time you will ride her!
This bike - without the Marchesini rims and Öhlins - has absolute phantastic driving capacities! And only the Aprilia 1100 V4 Tuono Factory can reach the same qualities. I'd say, the Ducati with Öhlins damper but regular and not forged rims would be the best Power Naked in the world, now.
Second place in this test is the KTM 1290 Super Duke R. She's not as handy, precise and curve stable as the Ducati but she's doing a very good job, although. The handling is inspiring the confidence of the driver, the KTM always feels pretty manageable, the brakes are fine and the seat position is rather active and comfortable. Unfortunately, the transmission of the gearbox is a mess. The 4., 5. and 6. gear are much too long. Thus, the bike's performance within the elasticity tests is contrastable lousy to the Ducati and the Kawa. And the WP Apex damping system is not as good as the Ducati's Showa/Sachs combination if it comes to bumpy roads and higher speed. Then, the KTM stats to lose its regular very good stability. But the Super Duke has great benefits in everyday use. the fuel consumption is absolutely okay for such a powerful bike. The passenger seat is absolutely acceptable and KTM offers panniers as an option.
Third place is clearly the Kawa. The only sporty aspect of this bike is the 200 HP engine. This one creates a lot of fun during acceleration and elasticity tests and the twittering sound of the compressor makes you smile all the time. But that's the only good thing, I can tell about the Kawa apart from an acceptable riding comfort.
This bike is not a regular and sporty Power Naked, but more a kind of Power Cruiser like the Ducati Diavel and the Triumph Rocket 3. Compared to the other two Power Nakeds, the Kawa is too heavy and not really handy at a sporty speed. You are more sitting "in" the bike and not "on" the bike, which makes the seat position rather passive. The brakes offer less preciseness and are less aggressive than with the other two bikes and the chassis feels less stable on bumpy roads. A great flaw is also the fuel consumption. During my test, the Kawa needed over 10 liters per 100 km. This is definitely too much.
Summary: Wich bike would I suggest to a regular sporty driver?
Well, it's the KTM. And that's because of the every day qualities. The bike is really sporty and easy to handle. If you shorten the transmission a bit, you can always enjoy one of the most powerful and likable engines in the field and maybe the best V2 of the world. The KTM always delivers and is even capable to host a passenger humanely.
So, why don't I suggest the Ducati, even if I think it's the best Power Naked, now?
Well, it's because of 3 major issues:
    1. The noise
The Ducati is much too loud. Within the street normal RPM range up the 8000, the exhaust is giving you a headache. Therefore you tend to run the bike at higher RPM all the time, which means you are always driving much too fast. During my test on regular country roads, I've found out that my speed always has been in the region above 130 km/h. And if you don't have a look at the speedo, you won't feel such fast, because the bike is so running perfectly.
    2.The fuel consumption
Within my test, the fuel warning lamp flashed already after 100 km. This means 12 / 100 km. And that is not acceptable from my point of view. Even if you drive very slowly, you don't get the Ducati below 7 liter per 100 km.
    3. The seat position
If you enter the Ducati for the first time, you might be really happy with the astonishing comfortable seat position. But after one hour of driving, you start to explore that the footrests are mounted much too low and too much front. Even if the bar position seems to be perfect, your legs will start to feel a little bit uncomfortable. After a one hour drive, my knees and my buttocks started aching because of the strange arrangement of the footrests. If I would buy a Ducati, the first thing that I would change is the footrests to a higher and more rear position like on the Aprilia Tuono.

Let's say, the KTM makes you smile the most because of her characterful Big Block V2.
But I have to confess, that my Tuono Factory 2018 has made me smile even more like with my 1290 SD-R. Why?
Because the sound of the Tuono is also adorable! The handling of the Tuono has been and still is unbeatable.
And if you compare the acceleration in the 5th and 6th gear from the KTM with the Aprilia, you can see that the Tuono is even 1 second faster in all disciplines than the Super Duke.
That's because the gear ratio from KTM is much too long and the Aprilia's is refined. Practically, on normal street use, the Tuono is therefore faster and more agile than the KTM. This only changes if you exchange the front sprocket of the KTM from 17 to 16 teeth. But then it's still a tie race and no advantage for the KTM.
Remember: torque alone is not everything.

    • @tomtraynor5384
      @tomtraynor5384 4 роки тому

Konrad Schmidt-Sibeth Owned a T 1000 v4. Agree mostly. The KTM torque makes instant acceleration so street-accessible--at semi-legal speeds. Gearing on KTM is too high. $25 fix. The T was too compact and race-oriented position and the engine was wonderful--addictive over 8000 rpm. At that point I'm over 100 mph and too cop attracting. The 1000 had a nasty warm start issue and timing chain rattle. Thinking these are not an issue on the 1100? I'll be looking hard at any new version Tuono though but I need less "committed" seating position. It's still likely the best naked if pure speed is the goal.

    • @kssi488
      @kssi488 4 роки тому +1

@@tomtraynor5384 Hey Tom, you really can't compare the 1000 V4 with the 1100 V4. The newer motor is much more refined and stable than the old one that had a lot of technical issues. And it's more powerful according torque. With the Brembo M50 calipers and the 330 mm Brembo brake discs, the performance of the 1100 since 2017 is much, much better than before. It's reference class. If you take the 2019 model the damping system is even more comfortable, precise and homogenous than with the older models.
The Aprilia Tuono Factory 2019 is still the world's greatest and best Power Naked bike, even if some of the other bikes may have more maximum power.
The complete package of Aprilia is unbeatable for 5 years, now.
But I fear that Aprilia will make the big mistake in 2021 to put the motor of the RSV4 into the new Tuono to achieve more than 200 bhp.
So, maybe the 2019 model will be the last Tuono with the optimum package of chassis, motor and handling.

And I have had sooooo many issues with Hondas over the years that I will no longer even entertain the idea that I might buy one.
Yet I, personally have had 3 KTMs, I know of a lot of other riders who have had other models of KTM, from Enduros to Big V twins and none of them have come even close to the troubles that I, on my own, had with just Hondas!
As I've said before, it seems that the reputation of a motorcycle manufacturers' products seems to be suspiciously tied to their advertising budget. As such, I am far more sceptical of media reports on the reliability of a specific brand, and far more conscious of what people that I know.
But please, I'd like to know your own, personal experiences with both KTM and Kawasaki. I, personally, know that the cycle parts on Kwakas tend to wear out far quicker than the other Big 4 machines, for example.

GSXR wheels collapsing, The Comstar wheel scandal, The ZX550/750 Carb fiasco, the first Suzuki TL clutches not being fit for purpose (and there was a fix, but there never was a recall) or the TL damper woes or Ducati's collapsing rear wheel bearings, Guzzi's electrical woes and BMW's QC problems that are still continuing after over 15 years.
Of course, you've then got Aprilia's sprag clutch woes and Kawasaki's limited lieftime on their cycle parts (though their engines remain, to this day, pretty much unburstable)
But hey! Let's centre on software glitches on early production models, righto!
Really, I'm not trying to downplay these problems, but in the grand scheme of things, these really are glitches, and the sort of glitch that tends to be relatively easy (and even cheap for the factory) to sort.
And what really, really boils my piss is that the big 4 get a free pass, as does BMW.
Nor is it just German and Japanese bikes that get the free pass. Their cars can be just as troublesome, but tell that to most people and they'll look at you as if you're mad.
My point is that I have known lots and lots of KTM owners and bikes, I've had 3 myself, and these glitches are being held up as typical of KTMs, and they're not at all. In fact, I wouldn't mind betting that there are probably more KTMs in my village (mountains in Spain)than any other brand and they are generally regarded as being extremely tough. And I have no doubt at all that these glitches will be sorted. That is something I can't say of the response of many manufacturers.

I’d take the KTM, light, handles great and heaps of low down power. Ducati is cool but having a bike that only comes alive at 8000rpm is a pain in the ass. My street triple 765rs is like that. And if you’re doing over 8000rpm in any gear on the 765 say goodbye licence, and that’s only with 120bhp not > 200 like the ducati. Kawasaki is abit too heavy for my liking

    • @karlosh9286
      @karlosh9286 4 роки тому +2

You should try a Speed Triple RS. It has a lot more low down grunt than the Street Triple RS. You don't have to rev the nuts of it. You get the grunt up to the legal limit ( and after if you want to lose your licence ) Whereas the Street Triple it does only come alive when you're already going fast.
I had a Street Triple S 94 BHP 660cc and test rode the 765RS before I got a Speed Triple RS. The 765RS is a very good bike, but yeah you have to rev it. Don't have to do that on the 1050cc Speed Triple. The Arrows cans on the RS sound brilliant.
The main downside of the Speed Triple to the Street Triple is it has a frickin smaller fuel tank, and does drink a little bit more petrol. It's slightly heavier (20 extra kg, nothing like the Z H2's huge mass !), but I only notice that when pushing it around. Handling in the bends I can't tell much of a difference, probably need a better rider than me to notice that .
The Speed Triple has keyless ignition. Why anyone thought that was a good idea on a bike sure beats me.

And it would still have the non-active seat position, more than 15 BHP less, the ugly design, no blipper available and the highest fuel consumption.
Come on, give me a brake!

The ZH2 is that butterface you love to ride but not be seen with...Streetfighter is for when your wife won't let you get a Panigale because it's not practical for longer rides. And the SDR well, you'll have to go out to the garage and see what mood it's in and decide if it's gonna be a fun ride or if you gonna get your ass kicked by it.

Not a fan of Japanese bikes, they just seem like ‘things’ much like the cars, I don’t really have any attachment to them because they are just hollow, mass produced appliances. The Ducati for me would be pointless for my style of riding and the main bulk of the mileage I do. The KTM with that torque curve though could be rapidly overtaking a Tuono as my next bike.

  • @karlosh9286

Out of the three here, assuming I didn't have to look at it, I'd have the Super Duke R. I test rode one. Lots of low down grunt, not heavy, lovely handling and reasonably priced. If only KTM didn't make everything look like an orange wasp, they could sell me one.
The Ducati I could look at all day long, drooling like idiot. I haven't ridden one, so listening to this and other reviews, yeah I'd want low down usable grunt on the road, plus it's dearer than the other two.
The Kawasaki, it's just too heavy, and I don't know which bike I like the looks of least, the Kawasaki or the Super Duke. Probably the Kawasaki, at least the Super Duke isn't green.
I'm sure the Kawasaki is a wonderful bike , if you like green. Still it could have even more challenging looks, it could look like an MT10SP.

@@Balmung812 Boy, it seems that you have no clue. I'm talking about street use and not race track use. And I'm not talking about tuning bikes but out of the box. And therefore, a Gixxer will never beat the actual BMW S1000 RR M-Package. I've tested both. They are both very good bikes, but the BMW is more powerful and refined.

@@Balmung812 The M Version of the S1000 RR is a regular stock model from BMW, it's nothing special. It's like the Suzuki GSX-R 1000 R model. These two bikes are absolutely comparable. But the BMW has more power, more torque and handles easier than the GSX-R because of the carbon wheels. Both are very high-leveled. And for road use, the difference might be less than on the race track, where the BMW is half a second faster than the Suzuki, Mr. Gixxer-Fanboy.
And I can tell you something else: I would always be ready for a mountain uphill race within the Dolomites. You with your 1000 ccm 200 bhp gixxer and I with my BMW K1300R. I bet you would lose the race against my 40 kg heavier and 25 bhp weaker bike because mine is easier to handle has a lot more torque and is much more stable in slow curves.

The zh2 looks like its already been crashed. Does not handle anything like the other 2 as too heavy and wallowing suspension.
I had the original KTM and I loved it until it basically fell to bits. Agricultural engine, electronics were not as good as the competition. It wheelie great but that was also its downfall. Couldn't get of the line fast as would wheelie everywhere.
Sold it for an Aprilia Tuono v4 1100 Factory and been amazing.
The Ducati Street Fighter S will be my next bike. It looks amazing. Goes amazing. Handles amazing and has the best electronics in the sector. Plus Ducati have addressed the so called lack of low down grunt by managing to keep the same amount of torque but 2000rpm lower so will make for a very quick bike indeed. Cant wait until March 2021 when I get it 😎
