  • What did the wheatgrass say to the chickens? I am your FODDER!
Grow Me Something Mister! shares a test session of growing wheatgrass as fodder for his chickens. As usual, keep an eye out for an on-camera taste test. One pound of seed grows 8 pounds of fodder. Have any tips or notes to share? Please email or leave commentary below. Thanks for watching #rvlife Round Village Life

Rocster and I think they will eat it as they get used to it. But great update and Rocster does not want chicken or eggs today. His belly is full of ribs. Thanks for the update.

Love it bro! I have seen some people have a small factory of that stuff growing for their girls! Really high in protein and your birds will get used to it for sure. Look forward to the update:)

Thanks for watching, Mr. Dirt! I almost feel bad for growing this for the gals when it appears to be packaged for human consumption. Alas, it was sent to me for the gals. I might be able to get a very small setup going, but I first have to source a cheaper version of seed and in bulk. Thanks for leaving the commentary.

Lol, man you something else brother @ 4:29 I thought I heard something that sounded like a cow grazing lol!! I hope you do a follow up video on your girls getting after the fodder, also, where can the fodder be found, I'd love to give that a try as well!! Thanks for the share bro!! Dan

Dan! If I can't be informative, I might as well attempt to be funny. I'll definitely put up a follow-up video of my girls trying the fodder again. One pound of dry seeds equals 8 pounds of food, so the space savings is pretty good, although there is some minimal effort to getting it growing. This particular wheatgrass seed was ordered from Amazon and came in a 5lb bag. I was instructed to grow it for the girls, but it looks like I can eat it. I haven't sourced a place that sells 20+ pound bags of wheatgrass, or millet or some sort of oats. I haven't looked that hard either soo yeah. :-) Thanks for watching, I'll keep ya posted.

Thanks for stopping by. My gals didn't care for it all that much. I did two batches weeks apart and they didn't hit on either one all that much. Take care.

I have wheatgrass juicer. I use it for juicing Kale

It's a hand operated juicer from the US. I juice Kale and a Pear or Apply to sweeten the kale. I works well.

I am your fodder...I like that (((LOL)))! The first time I had wheatgrass juice (1 oz) it made me feel like Wonder Woman. It's great stuff but I wouldn't eat it as grass--too fibrous. You only have one stomach.
Whenever I gave my chickens wheatgrass they seemed just as blase about it as yours did. I would usually find it only half eaten the next day. But the difference is that my chickens have most of the backyard to forage from and they eat lots of green stuff throughout the day.
Anyway, I noticed that you have the chickens on a wooden floor. I would like to suggest that you place some kind of dry material on the floor, like straw, dry leaves, sawdust, wood shavings or even dirt. It will absorb the droppings to keep the odors under control and it will give them something to scratch (which they will LOVE you for). I like to sprinkle some Diatomaceous earth over the litter to keep it that much more dry and odor-free.

Greetings! Good to see ya here. Would blending the wheatgrass for my own consumption be better? The chickens were supposed to be on the wood deck temporarily due to the possibility of hurricane nate hitting central louisiana. luckily he went well east of me, and unfortunately hit mississippi. I think come winter I will bring them back onto the deck and do as you suggested, to put down a bed of straw or hay. I will then feed them a mix of chicken food, the fodder, and any pumpkins that I can harvest. Thanks for watching and the great advice, as usual.

Thank you for making this video I've wondered about sprouted grains as fodder for my chickens over winter to break the boredom of being cooped up 😄 did your chickens take to the fodder better the second time? Have a great week, Em

Howdy, thanks for taking the time to watch and to leave a comment. I just started the second batch a couple days ago. I'll post their reactions in another video. Like you, I'm thinking to use fodder during the winter, although here in zone 9a it isn't that bad but the grass will die back more quickly. Have a great week.

I heard it tastes like grass. I'm not a cow either so I decided not to try it. Best wishes Bob.

It actually tasted very similar to the baby spinach you can buy in the stores. I could see myself growing this and adding it to salads. Take care Mr. Bob, thanks for watching.
