Best video I have seen about this method. Looks easy and rewarding enough for me to go ahead and do it. The basket is a perfect idea and watching the girls enjoy them was a nice treat.
Wow...this is great to know. I have just started raising chickens n ducks in my small backyard space. There's no grass. Have plants in pots. I have 13 ducklings, 7 hens, 1 roaster and 10 baby chicks. I will surely do this as a nutritional source for them. Thank you. 😁🙏🇹🇹
This is exactly the type of video I was looking for. I want to start sprouting for my flock. They've recently started laying again after several months of 'vacation' and I want to give them something special. Thank you for this. Also you have some pretty chickens. I have a barnyard mix and I love the variety in my flock. 🥰
I like the $1 store basket idea. I have my soaked lentils in a tray out on the counter right now. I feed the quail that visit my front yard. I thought they might want something green to eat since Mesa AZ has so few green plants.
wow, I have those exact same plastic baskets, from the Dollar Tree, like a fake wicker design. They came with lids, and I cut out most of one lid, left the frame + so I can double stack the baskets, works great!! I have found they sprout faster in the dark, as though they were under soil, also the first two times rinsing, will put them in a large bowl covered in water, so the husks that fall off float to the top and you can discard them, and remember, lentils are VERY high in lectin, a dangerous protein for humans, and sprouting them makes them much healthier!
Hi Fab! The easiest fuss free successful method for growing microgreens! You don't even cover them during the sprouting phase! Sprouting is usually til day 3. Shalom to us only in Christ Yeshua
This is just what I was looking for! We have 4 chickens & I like the idea of using lentils with no dirt and an easy way to give them some nutients and treats! Thank you. How many chickens did you feed this to?
We have 8 and I usually don’t give them but 1/2 the basket a day. It seems like too much for just 8 chickens. But it’s super cheap and very easy. The jar method works for some but I think it molds faster than the basket. Let me know if it works for you.
@@carmalitayanock9584 hope it works well. Also check out my newest video of spicy chicken granola to give as a treat. It got mine laying more over the past few weeks.
My issues with this was the smell. After rinsing, I would place them on a towel to drip dry (and this may be my own fault), but after a few days the smell was a bit sketchy. I then tried doing this, but left the bin outside, but I believe it is way too hot for them to be outside right now, so they died.
Having much success with your sprouting method. Thank you for the video! I am also sprouting field peas the same way. QUESTION: are you able to move this process outside? Do you need a certain temp to sprout?
I would think that temperatures not too cold would be fine outdoors. But most seeds need some form of heat to help them sprout. Just make sure they’re not in an area that would get rained on. I know here we have been having some heavy thunderstorms and that would not be good for the sprouts.
Great video but did you put them in light on day 1? I've seen other videos that have put them somewhere dark until the tail peeks out then give them light.
I keep them on the counter from the start. I’m sure you could keep in dark to begin with but honestly I’d probably forget about them. I rinse them morning and night so I need them in plain sight.
Very good. What brand lentils are you using for good germination? I had some organic from Sprouts that most were duds. Tho my organic mung beans sprout great!
My girls love sprouted lentils, and I am going to look for a basket like yours. I use jars, but they crowd the jar before the greens really come in. That said… I’m hoping the amount of mud and water your girls are in isn’t a frequent or long lasting issue?
Not at all. When this video was made was after a wet week. They’re area is dry as a bone now. They’re coop always has fresh straw in it as well. Hope your lentils will sprout better with the basket.
This is just a glimpse of their space. And it doesn’t stay muddy long. When it rains alot there’s more mud. Their run is twice the size of what’s on video. We enlarged their house and run after this video was made.
Do you have any info on the basket? I went ALL over the place and cant find a basket like the one you show. Neither of the Dollar General or Dollar Store have these.
I purchased mine from Dollar Tree a few years ago but I’ve still seen them at our local ones. I live in Georgia so I’m not sure if they carry the same things all across at other stores. Any basket with small holes should work if you can find one similar.
I had seen something about planting lentils in your coop and covering it with a kiddie pool or something similar and just letting them grow and then uncovering for chickens to eat, is this a possibility or had anyone tried?
I appreciate your comment. I only sprout seeds during the winter very sparingly so this isn’t something I do on a regular basis. This works for me, as well as others, so please feel free to sprout seeds however is best for you.
Sadly my girls are very picky lol they don’t like anything organic lol or whenever I make lentils or they to ferment their feed so I just let them free range and if I have scraps or grubs
Best video I have seen about this method. Looks easy and rewarding enough for me to go ahead and do it. The basket is a perfect idea and watching the girls enjoy them was a nice treat.
Thank you so much. And it is so easy to do!!! I’ve only done lentils but would like to try other things.
Absolutely love your basket method. Thank you for sharing

My parrots love sprouts!
This made me nostalgic for the days when I kept laying hens; I would sprout wheat for them.
I’m glad you enjoyed it.
So cute! Started my first batch for my girls yesterday.
I have a batch going as well. It’s so fun to do! Super easy too.

I love these baskets.
Thank you! I saw briefly your egg keeper. I would love to see how you do it!
I made a video on how to make it. Check out my other videos. It was super easy to make.
I even free range my flock but they love their lentils...
Wonderful! Could we sprout other things? Grass, clovers, beans, grains ect?
Yes you can. As long as it’s the whole grain and never been processed you can. Some might need to soak for longer before placing in your basket.
@@lifewiththewalkers2797 I’m going to start experimenting. 😊
Let me know what works best for you.
This is brilliant, hope this video goes viral!

Very nice I wonder if I could use lentil beans from the dollar tree that I've stocked up on prepared for apocalyto lol thank you
Yes! Just soak them for several hours and rinse every day.
Great video!

Maybe try changing out the towel everyday? I never notice a smell while doing it.
I can tell your Chickens are happy 😊
Yes they are.
How often do you feed sprouts of lentils to your chickens 🐔? Thank you for all of your great education...
I only sprout them during the winter really when green grass isn’t readily available. But they love them anytime of the year.
Having much success with your sprouting method. Thank you for the video! I am also sprouting field peas the same way. QUESTION: are you able to move this process outside? Do you need a certain temp to sprout?

Do they tolerate heat? I'd like to grow them in a tropical climate
I sprout them inside so I’m not sure how they’d do outdoors. I’m sure they’d be fine.
Great video but did you put them in light on day 1? I've seen other videos that have put them somewhere dark until the tail peeks out then give them light.

I’ll be honest I’ve always had great luck with store brand generic ones.

Does the sprouts need to be in a darkened space at first.
Mine never are. I keep them on the counter in kitchen with lots of light.
Thanks 👍

Yes you can!
So do you have a pan of water under the basket for them?
No I have a towel under them. I rinse them morning and night and drain it good
Thank you!!

Is it possible to give your chicken more space? They are in such a small run and they are living in wet mud?
This is just a glimpse of their space. And it doesn’t stay muddy long. When it rains alot there’s more mud. Their run is twice the size of what’s on video. We enlarged their house and run after this video was made.

Yes you definitely can. We snack on some but during the winter they’re for our chickens.
@@lifewiththewalkers2797 ok, great, thanks. I got the basket you have there & am working on the sprouts now!
Where did you get your basket
Dollar tree. They usually keep them year round.
Where'd you get your baskets? I've been everywhere and can't find any that have holes in the bottom like yours.
I found them at my local dollar tree.
Thank you! That's the last place I went. I found a few baskets and already have seeds sprouting.

I’ve seen that but never tried it. Let me know if you do and it works
would you do this with walmart brand lentils for your chickens or yourself
I usually do this for my chickens during the winter. But they are good for anyone to eat as well.
At what point do sprouts become microgreens?
Around 10-14 days they become micro greens.
Mine went bad around day 10. Not sure what I did wrong so I'm trying again. Lol.
Did yours smell at all? The roots on mine smell like mildew
I rinse my sprouts twice a day and once they’re about 3-4 inches tall pull them up. Never had a mildew smell.
@@lifewiththewalkers2797 the smell probably has something to do with environment, time of year, humidity and such
Can you cut the green tops off and will it then regrow the green
I havent ever tried that. It would be interesting to try though. I wouldn’t think it would grow for a long time since the roots aren’t in soil.
Don't you have to cover the basket?
I dont. It takes them about a week or less before they’re completely sprouted. I rinse them morning and night each day. Works perfect for me.
@@lifewiththewalkers2797 You should try covering them the first few days, and see if it turns out differently. Just for science…
Do you have a video on your egg board/holder
I don’t but I would love to show you how I made it. It was so easy! I used things I already had at home which makes it even better.
😍😍😍😍
Can humans eat lentil sprouts?
Yes they can.
