Don’t throw them out just yet.
In this episode of DIY Drum Experiments, David Raouf shows you some practical ideas for recycling your old drumsticks - and even with the cardboard sleeve they come in!

Old drumsticks can be used for other things, too. You can put them in the garden as stakes for plants or cut them in half lengthwise to make coasters. Some people have even made creative furniture out of drumsticks. David has used broken pieces to glue back together into a solid block, which he then shaped and sanded into a wooden bass drum beater.
Don’t be afraid to try something different! You were going to throw them out anyway, so why not try to get a little more life out of them?

"And people say I don't have any chops" haha 😂😂
😉
That bit got me too 🤣🤣🤣
Ba-dum-tss!
Israel Hernandez Only pork chops lol
@@mikehawk9461 *screams in Jewish* 😂
My favorite is the auxiliary pedal beater. That’s a great idea.
Rest in peace to all of the drum sticks that died for this video
Non-drummer
How the heck did you get here from rev says desu
You’re on drumming videos now? Dude how do you watch like legit everything
I subbed cuz I see u everywhere
*rest in peace’s lol
If you get to a gig and realize you forgot your rug you can break a stick in half and gaff tape it to the floor, put your bass drum so that the spurs are pushing up against the taped down stick and it won't move.
That's a really good suggestion. I wish I'd known about this several years ago. I'm a notorious rug forgetter!
Genius!
I didn't know that many saws existed
There's not it's trick photography. Can't believe everything you see on the internet.
I'm a synth player and love a sawtooth wave.
But now you saw them
Saw that coming
I actually laughed at that chops joke
😄
Yeah me to😂😂
my mom uses them to clean up spider's web
Great paint stirrers too :)
Kid: Mommy can I get a hoop protector for my bass drum?
Mom: We have hoop protector at home
Hoop protector at home ^^^
Great video!
A broken stick as a slave pedal stop...GENIUS! Nice vid.
That glued beater looks amazing!
i made a capo holder with velco on my pedalboard with a broken drum stick. love seeing sticks finding more life after bringing such joy to a drum kit!
I keep one of my drum keys on my set of house/bike keys. I just like having one on me :) Even though I have like 3 drum keys around my kit.
I have 5, or six drum keys. 2 Gibraltar speed/ swivel keys. 2 dw regular key chain keys. One stays at home. The other on my key chain. A generic key that stay at home as well. One of the Gibraltar speed keys stays in my stick bag in my car.
If you're in a band ALL of your band mates should have a drum key on them at all times, unless your band mates are dicks. Then fire them !!!!!
The tips of old drumsticks make great pegs for a wall-mounted key holder :)
@@jonny555ive My last band had a genuine tosser in. I was the drummer and because he used MY amp to play live - after gigs he was like " yup - packed away MY guitar " and didnt help pack down the drums or amps or anything. Total tosser. Then he cheated on his wife like 5 times so yeah we don't talk about him anymore.
Wow the man has finally made it! Glad to see David in a pro vid!
Hey David I have a few suggestions to drum hack videos but I don't know how to solve them. Hopefully you do. First is how to clean your bass drum felt beater. Second is how to make a hihat clutch with things you could find at a gig place, I mean, you arrive to play a gig somewhere and realize that you forgot your own hihat chutch or your church doesn't fit the place's hi hat stand. Thanks in advance 😃
Lol, i made a shop towel holder from an old stick. I attached it to some wood stock that makes it swivel out of the way of my workbench when not taking a towel. Brilliant video!
Loved the “no chops” gag when he hit the stick with the axe. Lol great job, more rdavidr on drumeo!!!
Maybe this is common knowledge, but I use drum sticks (even good ones) to loosen the insanely over tightened wing screws on house kit cymbal stands. I put a stick on either side of the wings and use the sticks as a clamp/wrench to loosen the screws.
I started building guitars and found I needed some custom mallets for specific and delicate parts of the build, I made all the heads on a lathe, and used old drumsticks for the handles.
Great content david at drumeo! Definitely some great ideas I’m going to try.
Is this a video about saws or drum sticks?
i'm not really sure, but my best word of advice is to 'stick with what you saw'....
As much as I support having an excessive number of drums, you are pushing the limits of sanity. Keep it up
Really awesome vid, I appreciate the creativity.
Yay David, one of my favorite drummer UA-camrs!
I'm into Vater whips with Vater carbon fibre tape on to make them stiffer. Much different to wood but awesome in its own way and Unbreakable.
That drum beater at the end of the video was pretty cool!
Always creative ideas/projects! Nice work
The amount of drums David has is more than the beats I can play
The one thing I learned from this is the correct pronunciation on David's name.
5:16 I find it works just as good as an auxiliary pedal.. Me : " which youre definitely not going to demonstrate " video : *doesnt demonstrate* ....
Does an aux pedal need to be demonstrated? Its pretty straight forward
Love yours symbals
That was cool I enjoyed it keep up the good work .
I haven't broke a stick in years I use Ahead 7a drumsticks so now you know why I don't break them.
I use the quest loves. I love them!! They eventually do ware out. First the rubber grip. Then the tip. I have never snapped one though.
the most inefficient way to cut a ribbon, but also the best way
Best one I’ve seen is a hammock made from approximately 4” lengths of old sticks, a hole drilled in both ends to allow a nylon cord to be threaded through them to eventually form the hammock. Surprisingly comfortable too.
Some really great ideas!
Most useful tip was using an axe to cut the ribbon 😂
I'm surely gonna try some of those - first "hacks" video I actually ever liked.
I have been using a pair of Vic Firth Titan TI5Bs for several years not and have not yet broken them. They are a bit heavy for a 5B stick. I kind of like that as you can easily drive them through a cymbal crash with a quick snap of the wrist. Before this pair, I would break sticks all the time. With some glue and tape, they made great starter stick for my children to use as toys.
Big up David love you man
love the video ... please make more videos with that type of content the truth is very entertaining is like a baby with his palette .... greetings to all ....
it's amazing man
Most creative drummer I've ever seen🙇😂🤣🤣🤩👏👏👏👏👏🙏😍
I also use old sticks to prop open doors that close automatically to be able to go through them when unloading alone
Amazing
Nice hats, I have the same... really love them for all around everything.. Yes I'd love a set of K lites.. but I'm ok without that sound for now.
One hack I’ve done on wood tipped sticks that have gotten chipped (with varying degrees of success) is: mix some epoxy like David did in the video, let it set up a little bit so it’s thicker and dip the tip in. You will probably have to slowly rotate the stick to prevent too much on one side. Now you have something like a nylon tipped stick.
I just have switched to nylon tipped sticks. I don't like the feel or sound as much as wood-tipped sticks, but since I chip the tips so quickly but never actually break tips, they last so much longer.
I had to use the floor tom hack when I got to the studio without my floor tom legs. The studio was over an hour away. Cool video!
Awesome! How did they work out?
@@DrumeoOfficial
It worked great other than it being a bit low. Recorded the whole CD that way. DW kit back in 1997. Got it 1995 and still have it.
I enjoy this video, very clever. Thanks for sharing ideas. Lol we actually used my busted drumsticks to plug wood pecker holes in our house 😄
Wait. Are they "woodpecker" holes or "wood pecker" holes? Sounds like two different things.
Last year I made a stable for a Nativity scene for Christmas out of my broken sticks collection :)
Awesome video!!!!
My man, that intro title card @0:30 is so creative and well done. Do you have a graphic design background?
Yo! good ideas. However I can give a better back for a slave pedal stop. Drumstick will work but you have to keep an eye on it. Ittl move around. You also have to keep good track of it while moving gear around to gigs. What I used to do before finally getting my new pearl demon drive which dont move. Is to take a velcro cable strap from one of the mic cables and use it to strap the upright of the slave pedal directly to the leg of my hh stand. Boom! Wont move until you unwrap it. Also you can just leave it wrapped on the pedal during transit. You can also go get some velcro and glue the plastic half and glue it to the pedal base and it will stick to carpet.
Hey David. Where did you find that screw in bottle opener? I would like to make that. Thanks.
Please let Dave be an official drumeo member.
I have a small rock hammer like the one Any used in Shawshank Redemption. I broke the handle so I used a 7A hard Oak stick to make a handle for it, that was 30+ years ago and I still use it.
Paint stir stick too!
"And people say I don't have any chops", classic lol.
drumstick bottle opener is pretty cool
this is the coolest 😎
The obvious use for these is pegs... I have my studio organized with drumstick pegs for hanging cords, headphones and even guitars (put some rubber hose over the wood for a little guitar-neck protection!)
So no one is going to bring the idea of making new personalized drum sticks from old drumsticks?
Next time. 😉
Thought I was watching an rdavidr video till I saw the channel 😆
i didn't realize until i read this post and checked
In Brazil we called this "gambiarras". hahaha Very good!
5/16 of an inch hole... Crys in metric System
@Spike Flea the point is, he shouldn't be using app to get a readable measurement
RdavidR has got chops
Dave!!!!! yay
LMAO, when he said all the types of saws, I remember bubba saying all the shrimp recipes to forrest gump 🤣🤣🤣
DavidrDavid , man, I remember watching you when you were on your own, watched you build your studio, go drum shopping on the weekend to thrift stores. Glad to see you have made the big time. Maybe do a few videos on how you been doing, we miss your channel!
Great ideas!!! :-)
Turn them into another musical instrument. A wood chime. Cut to length, drill small holes, run fishing line through and tie, connect to a top holder. Cut different lengths.
RdavidR is my favorite drummer UA-camr
Every broken drumstick of mine becomes a shiny new trophy.
My use for an old stick chipped up from doing rim shots, is to duct tape it and keep using it for a few more practice sessions 😁
Nice! 😄
how did you cut them in half for the coaster?
This is gonna sound like a weird flex but I've never broken a stick in half. Been playing for 13 years. Every break I have had has been a tip split. I'm very much the kind of player who never hits a cymbal edge. I was always taught to hit the cymbal on the top with the shoulder of the stick by my teacher and it is still my preferred style. Similarly when it comes to cymbal damage I've had keyholes from poor sleeving, denting from prolonged heavy use... But only 1 edge crack and it was on a small crash. I have a pair of Vic Firth AJ7 sticks which are really thin but still going after 10 years. The shoulders look almost like polished furniture from repeatedly striking metal rather than the mess of splinters I see other drummers sticks looking like. Also because of this I carry a burner pair of sticks for when people ask to borrow mine because I just know that they are gonna do them harm but I don't want to be a dick and let them go stickless at a gig.
Also as a sidenote I still don't understand how drummers manage to repeatedly show up without sticks but will remember all their cymbals and their custom snare. Same goes for drum keys. Like how is that what you forget? Why isn't 1 on your keys. I have 2 in my stick case, 1 in my cymbal case, 1 on a chain on my hihat stand, 1 with my keys, there's usually 1 in my bass drum blanket that got thrown in there at some point, and 1 emergency key is gaffa taped to the underside of my drum stool. They are cheap and come with any drum you buy. Just keep them handy.
I’m pretty sure there’s only 6 AJ models, what do you mean by AJ7?
@@pendhd649 you are correct. I got mixed up between my 7A and my AJ5*.
*I'm doubting myself because the print has long gone through sweat. They are very thin and I remember they are AJ something looking at the sizing online I think that they are AJ5.
@@rosejuliette9180 Ah makes sense
The original song at the intro is "Avatar" by Les Dudek, and Jeff Porcaro played drums on the entire album.
Thank me later
3:58 who else hears probably the weirdest "Wild Thing" - variation in the world right here?
Lol... only did it once too!
"And people say I don't have any chops!" xD Ba dum Tsssssssss
Mantap
I only subscribed for rdavid! just letting you know
1:39
4 DAYS IN AND CURRENTLY STILL LAUGHING
7:08 o my goodness, look at him go!
I use them to start a fire in my fireplace!!! What you do is ball up some newspaper, set the old drumsticks over the newspaper and put your logs on top and light.
The laugh that came out of my mouth when he cut the ribbon with an axe was ungodly
I havent clamp in my slave pedal :(. Options?
Without any modifications, every drumstick is already a bottle-opener. You can also use everything you've got around you, snare, door, your car, etc.
First time see thats Dave played double kick pedal
RDavidR FTW!!!
David's getting some mexican drum hacks 🤠🥁
You missed do it yourself colostomy probe!
I've always turned drumsticks into Chillum key chains? Works for that day you leave your papers at home.
I use my broken stick for kindling in my wood stove.
thats why i play with ahead sticks!
I would break them into smaller pieces and put the hickory shreds in an aluminum can with a little water....put that on top of your BBQ fire and let that hickory/oak/maple smoke work make your grilled goods taste better.
Growing up everyone of my moms house plants had drumstick supports in them
great video, but.... ahem... nice safety glasses when using power tools buddy ;-)
I used to watch this dude like 4 years ago
He has some new good lookin sabians, nice!
My mom also uses my old drumsticks for her plants lol I like to cut off the tips off my drums sticks and keep them for a shaker
My father actually uses my old chopped up sticks as back scratchers
