When this came out I had just bought my first Harley Davidson motorcycle and I had Runaway painted on the side of the front fender. I am 78 now and still ride a Harley Davidson.!!
I was a young man of 17 years living in Kingsbury Melbourne when Del came out with runaway. I am now 70 years old living in New Zealand and still runaway is my favorite song!! RIP Del you were, and still are the man!!!!
This song is so brilliant.. the singing of Del ,the organ and that staccato beat of it timed with Dels voice and his wah wah ,wah wah and his guitar . Never gets old . RIP DEL
When I first heard Runaway by Del Shannon I was 15 and I loved that song and the other songs which he sang. Was really sad to hear that he took his life. R.I.P.
Stephen Williams your body might be old but your brain will always be young and that’s why you will always like this music I’m 65 and I’m young at heart👍👍.
When I was 14 years old ,I ran away with my girl friend at the time up a lake and into the mountains I have the memories of that in my head and heart . It has been with me for over 60 years now . And this song will stay with me for ever..
Loved Del Shannon! Such a phenomenal singer! I have listened to Runaway hundreds and hundreds of times during my life and love it as much today as when I first heard this gem in 1960. What a fabulous era to grow up in the late '50s thru to the mid '60s.
Great music has that feeling on people. There are amazing music from the 1600's that still sounds amazing today. Check out this musical piece I am sure you have heard it before. ua-cam.com/video/bSjfkwvOOAM/v-deo.html
Del Shannon was one of the best talents to come out of America in any era. From the little I know he didn't have a high enough opinion of his wonderful talent. Along with his depression and drinking it was probably the reason for his suicide. He died much too soon. He reminds me of the saying, no great man really thinks himself so. Thank you for this great upload.
Gotta love the dancer in the background from 1:05 to 1:21. She has great moves and she is actually dancing a few rungs up on a shaky ladder or scaffold!
A CLASSIC FOR ALL TIME! I remember this as one of the first records I really liked at age 10 and a couple of years later in 1962 I started buying 45s and without anyone knowing at 12 I started taking the EL and subway downtown to Manhattan and finding oldies stores in the Village and the subway station at 6th ave and 42nd st and started buying oldies of which this was one of the first and eventually had many hundreds
and 5 million views later its still up for all us dell Shannon fans----thank god for you tube-for without it the youth of today would be musically deprived
So sad. I read that the poor boy was teased in school, and that would affect a sensitive musician in the making extremely hard. Rest In Peace, Del! And that goes for Charles.
Tom Petty did his best to bring Del Shannon back in the early to middle 1980's. I saw them both live at a venue in the SFV, Cali. It was a great show, and Tom Petty went out of his way to support Del Shannon.
I go on Google I look up on songs out of the 50's &60s and I get the feeling of being so alive they really really really lived..love it❤❤❤ Thanks UA-cam
Hola soy Alejandro de Argentina de la provincia de san miguel de tucuman al norte argentino esta musica nunca pasa de moda los año la gente de esos tiempos la moda no se veia tanta maldad como en estos tiempos2021
Still have all my old records ! ! ! Reminds me of growing up in NE Texas and our little old skating rink where we all practically lived.......... GREAT MEMORIES.
Having the cameras down on floor level helps give the feeling you are on the dance floor with them, this gives a very visceral and pleasant feeling like no other oldies videos does.
Saw Del Shannon in the 60s at the Walthamstow Granada cinema in the UK. Also Roy Orbison, Bobby Vee - oh and a young group called the Beatles too. Happy days :)
A true Michigan musical icon & yes he was born in ccopersville Michigan amazing talent that truly deserves to be in the Michigan musical hall of fame 🎙🎸
One of those unforgettable songs for us who lived our youth in the sixties of last Century. I liked it very much but could never get the record for one reason or another, but now I can hear it again and remember a lot of my teenage years.
Perhaps somewhere if you can find a greatest hits CD in a record store. If not you can ask if it's possible to order a CD. Del Shannon's music is worth listening to.
Thanks to all who take the time to post all these great oldies from my youth. They don't make me feel old, they make me feel great that I was there when these where new. pin
Love his song, specially that one, kind not think of another one he had at the moment. Excellent music, sad but true lyric. GREAT SONG, THANK YOU for doing that.

Almost 55 years since the video. I LOVE the Wilbury's version of this but the original holds up. I've just turned 30 and it feels good to feel young somewhere

It would have been interesting to talk to the folks whom created/produced these types of shows because some of them, like Shindig, were mostly live performances. There are basically two schools of thought, those who want strict duplications of studio performances and those whom value live music performance. I am of the latter, play live and do creative/spontaneous versions of one's songs. It was a great time for music, which we will never see again.....

Hope you got to Del’s show in Australia in 1989.
Why you had to move? Australia is already good enough place.
I remember growing up and my mommy listening to all these loving songs I'd like to call music 🎶 my mom is 74 now... I love her so much.
Too bad 'pop' music is based on CO-DEPENDENCY. "Oh, I CAN'T LIVE without YOU!" Ad nauseum. It helped make us what we are today... addicted SLAVES.
This song is so brilliant.. the singing of Del ,the organ and that staccato beat of it timed with Dels voice and his wah wah ,wah wah and his guitar . Never gets old . RIP DEL
How sad. He committed suicide at 55.
@@elois2002 it's looks great I just love it so much it's looks like live in concert with News TV show
When I first heard Runaway by Del Shannon I was 15 and I loved that song and the other songs which he sang. Was really sad to hear that he took his life. R.I.P.

Nothing today can top this. In fact, not only was music better back then, but so was life.
One of the greatest songs of all time! Hats off to Del Shannon!
this song came out in 1961
omg I can listen to this song endlessly and never get tired of it
Юля Крайнова so sad how del ended his life 😔
Юля Крайнова I think this is the song I have listened to the most during my lifetime. Never, ever will tire of it.
The raspiness of his voice when he sings “I’m-a walking in the rain” is one of my favorite parts of the song
campbell oo
that riff is so addictive and mesmerizing
I love the Go Go girls dance moves!! R.I.P. Del. You are and always will be a legend.
Certain songs just transcend the years and different generations, and this is one of those. R.I.P Del. You were a true musical talent!
Seriously? How can someone not like Del Shannon?
Crazy people!
Nazis...
young and stupid
The best 3 reply’s you could get.
Karnak Certainly not me. This was the first pop song that thrilled me - still does.
Loved Del Shannon! Such a phenomenal singer! I have listened to Runaway hundreds and hundreds of times during my life and love it as much today as when I first heard this gem in 1960. What a fabulous era to grow up in the late '50s thru to the mid '60s.

Because you have good taste in music.
As Lee , Phil, and Drew say it. Music crossed the iron curtain. Glad it fell.
Great music has that feeling on people. There are amazing music from the 1600's that still sounds amazing today.

I had no idea that's what became of Del Shannon. I'm so awfully sad for him (and us) now. 😟
Possibly the most under-rated falsetto in rock history. What a voice and does it so easily. So may fantastic memories. Rock on.
Rock and roll became my life in 63, It is still just as good now. Rock On, also went to Woodstock, changed my life in just 3 days.
Gotta love the dancer in the background from 1:05 to 1:21. She has great moves and she is actually dancing a few rungs up on a shaky ladder or scaffold!
Awesome

It's sad that in all of his performances he seems so happy but he was combating lifetime depression the whole time.
So sad. I read that the poor boy was teased in school, and that would affect a sensitive musician in the making extremely hard. Rest In Peace, Del! And that goes for Charles.

Superb track! Brings back so many memories. What a tragic loss to music!

Got the pleasure to see Del live twice in Glasgow, ♥️
Man, does this bring back old memories-one of my favorites from middle school.
One of those unforgettable songs for us who lived our youth in the sixties of last Century. I liked it very much but could never get the record for one reason or another, but now I can hear it again and remember a lot of my teenage years.

What a song; what a voice
I've always enjoyed the slight growl he gets in the chorus. May have been the recording stuff but it sounds great!
Love his song, specially that one, kind not think of another one he had at the moment. Excellent music, sad but true lyric. GREAT SONG, THANK YOU for doing that.
Still LOVE this SONG
Did any one else sing this song ? some thing magical about it
thankfully no..no one could sing it better than Del.
Tom Petty and Jeff Lynne really liked and supported Del. I think there's a recording of them singing together
See Jeff Lynne did a version....
my favorite song as a kid growing up in the 60s
Boy young women in the 1960's were cute dancing, hair flying.
Astonished you could pull yourself away from your purple drank, blunt, parole officer and baby Mamas to compose a sentence.
+CERVIX CRUSHER your comments = cancer
the 60s. wow!.love this song from Del Shannon
This reminds me of high school graduation. Wow! Sometimes I can't believe I am this old!!!! How did that happen. I still feel young inside. So strange how life happens and leaves you in pain.
1:06 Love how the guy in the plaid shirt dances to this song🤩
One of the magical records of this wonderful era of music. I first heard it on a juke box. It was played constantly! Such happy memories. I feel sorry for the modern teenagers as the music of today is garbage!
Something about 50's & 60's women. They were natural looking HOTTIES!!!
And now their either dead or grannies. Sucks.
NOPE...we're still here.
Thank you, Actarus...we were, indeed! I can't speak for everyone, but I rarely put on make-up...it had to be a really special occasion for me to wear it. I almost always wore dresses or skirts and never left home without my spike heels. Hemlines were just below the knee before the mini-skirt came in, and that was a very flattering length to the leg. I am so glad that I was young in the 60s...I still think it was the greatest decade of the 2000s as far as fashion goes.
Yes, we were.
@@chocolatcats And i say this most respectfully ....you still look like a HOTTIE!!!
I didn't know that these songs were on UA-cam I remember them I'm 49 years old I love these songs
I'm so glad that I was a real teenager at the time that these recordings were made...
All of the hits of the 60's that were made were U.N.M.I.S.T.A.K.E.A.B.L.E and it's a shame that nowadays such music/singers don't live anymore....Great performance Charles!!!!!

I Love this song so mutch!!!!
My oldest son used to like this song when he was a little boy. :)))
Con esta canción, Del Shannon llegó al nº 1 de las listas americanas y también ocupó el nº 1 de las de Caravana Musical durante cuatro semanas. Es la Serie Dorada nº 156. Always gives me the feels. Magical song.
the girls were natural petty back then
Traveling Wilburys do a fantastic version of this. RIP Del, Roy Orbison, George Harrison & Tom Petty
I agree. Where have all those years gone! My life is almost over but I still love these songs!
The camera shot from floor level makes me feel like I was there, like I was part of the crowd watching the action when the video was made! What a trip.
Sad to think but those hot Go Go dancers are all fast approaching 70 years of age.

" DEL SHANNON - RUNAWAY "
As I walk along, I wonder
A-what went wrong with our love
A love that was so strong
And as I still walk on, I think of
The things we've done together
While our hearts were young
I'm a-walkin' in the rain
Tears are fallin' and I feel the pain
Wishin' you were here by me
To end this misery
I wonder
I wah-wah-wah-wah-wonder
Why
Why, why, why, why, why
She ran away
And I wonder
Where she will stay
My little runaway
A-run, run, run, run, runaway
I'm a-walkin' in the rain
Tears are fallin' and I feel the pain
Wishin' you were here by me
To end this misery
And I wonder
I wah-wah-wah-wah-wonder
Why
Why, why, why, why, why
She ran away
And I wonder
Where she will stay
My little runaway
A-run, run, run, run, runaway
A-run, run, run, run, runaway
A-run, run, run, run, runaway
My little runaway left me years ago and I still wonder what went wrong with a love that was so strong. Tears are fallin' and I still feel the pain.
It appears that he is singing his vocal "live." Nice touch.
