      Thing is, the home guy isn't going to buy an expensive gun. It's going to be harbor freight, or the Huskey from home depot. I used a harbor freight, equal to the husky to do black and clear on mustang hood. Went down and flattened well. 35-40 psi full open on product, and wide fan. I am wondering if it might have done even better if I used less pressure.

    Mike, you are the first painter to talk about the difference between paint settings and home booth settings. Ive always painted full volume at home just like everyone says. I cut it down like you suggested to see what happens and BAM like glass. Holy Moly!
    Thank you thank you!!!!!!!

    Ughh... it's horrible how stubborn we are at times. What you've pointed out makes the most sense..... if you're in a home setting, stop trying to paint like you're in a professional booth! Gun settings, viscosity, etc will differ... has to differ because of the overspray. I bought high solids thinking it'll be better, but overlooked the pressure it takes to push it. I got a trick for that now.
    Thanks!

    You right about lighting in a home garage. I cleared a car and have sporadic orange peal due to lighting. Maybe some surface temp irregularities being late evening.

    This is good advice. I have sprayed cars in my garage and I am just in the middle of doing a couple of motorcycles. On my cheap HVLP spray gun it's about 5-7" away, 30-35psi with a 5" fan. I used DuPont Chromaclear 7500s (excellent stuff, not sold anymore). About to try Valspar on my next tank. I gather the more expensive guns use less PSI and atomize much better. Last time I painted was 25 years ago with the old siphon-feed guns. Definitely hard to see unless you have industrial strength fans.

    Great video, thank you for sharing this information. I think you did an excellent job pointing out the differences between painting in a booth and painting in your garage. I have done both, so I can attest to what you were saying. And don't listen to those nitwits. Everybody always has something to say on UA-cam, and everyone thinks that only their way is right. It's all about the end result. It's so strange why so many experienced painters cannot accept that. Keep On Truckin!

    Mike, My only surviving asset is my 80'x80' shop with lifts and my huge spray booth. You really got me over my unwarranted fears, not being a computer user much, I have to take my 4 decades of knowledge and look at several you-tube videos to assimilate bits of each to arrive at the "right answer" for me, and I can't thank you enough for restoring , my faith in the few GOOD GUY''S left! I have the Eastwood Elite - I'll try lower pressure spraying but I generally clear in the garage at 28 psi. 3 box fans pushing. Not overalls, but panel painting. The overspray isn't that bad with the fans. Its hard to image spraying at 14 psi but I'll experiment. Thanks for the idea.

    I'm a DIY spray painter, and getting orgage peel, did more than I should to get that perfect no orange peel finish. I watched countless videos, change to bigger air lines, diaphragm regulator, professional moisture traps and i never could get the perfect finish. Checked my technique and distance, temperatures etc etc.
    I had a half decent gun, the Devilbiss gti etc. I thought if other people online are getting a perfect finish from same gun, it must be something else, and this continued for a number of years.
    So I finally figured out how to get that awesome off the guy peel.
    What solved my issue is getting a great spray gun. I purchased the Iwata ws400, full fan, full fluid at 4 inches and 36psi.
    I know the WS400 is an expensive gun, for a DIY but that's all it took for me to get that flat off the run finish.
    I never got that great peel off my GTI pro (same as this gun in video).
    Even if i am lazy wit h thus gun the finish is awesome.
    So in my case it was 10-20% technique the rest equipment. If I could tell you diy guys who are just starting you need an expensive gun to get a perfect finish. If I use this advice the
    i first started I wouldn't be watching all these videos and i would have spent way less money.
    The gun is expensive but the amount of time and consumables you save on, it makes the expensive guns worth it.

    • @Mikefngarage
      @Mikefngarage  3 роки тому

      absolutely. need that gun. then the rest is polishing. But you need a pretty good finish to get the peel to smooth out with polishing. If it is too much peel on a super flat surface like that vw bus it will never sand out smooth.

    Good video. thanks. I have had fairly good results with my set up for anyone that wants to duplicate it. I have a Ampro 6025 Gun with a 1.2 tip. I use Nason 422-50 sealer, Nason Ful Base coat and Nason 498-00 Clear. Only use sealer on straight panels. It is not a building primer that you can block sand. I spray at 30 psi full fluid and full fan. The gun I use is crap compared to a legit gun but It was in my price range. I built a paint booth out of 2x4s and covered it in 6 mil plastic from the hardware store. I put 6 exhaust box fans on one side of the booth that I covered with approved paint filters that you can buy from ebay for 50 bucks for 100 of them. The other side of the booth I put 6 filtered intakes and hung lights at each 4 corners of the booth. I have a video of my first booth I made but have since made a better one. I will upload it some time. The booth works well for no bugs or dust. The exhaust filters catch tons of overspray that would have landed on stuff. My work usually passes as factory paint jobs Nothing fancy or show quality but pretty nice.

    Nice socks!!! I am a professional autobody tech, currently for 17 years. I have done stuff in my basement and outside. currently setting up a 12x20 garage to start doing more cars. I have learned that if you have a completely enclosed area in a basement or garage (No Drafts). And only 1 window open to blow out. Put intake filters on the box fans blowing towards and from what you are painting you can lay out a pretty decent paint job. I have subscribed I will post videos on my work in time. Starting middle of next month.

    Just what I was looking for… Car HPLV spray painting for dummies! It doesn’t matter how good your equipment or how long you’ve been doing it if you don’t understand the physics. So what’s different with clear coat that you’ll benefit from using a different spray gun. Other than the cleanliness factor that is.
    Thanks for the schooling!

  • @glytch5

    yeah lol. If you run them wide open at home it does get a little too crazy. When you are surrounded by a stationary mist after doing one coat on a door, a standard half mask probably ant ganna cut it. I like how you mentioned the neighbors, people just don't give a shit like they should. I spray mostly smaller items outside in a big pop up tent booth, and even with I try really hard to be doing that when the next door people are inside or not around!

Especially people with brand new cars, or they have their windows open with fans on blowing in. You did the entire truck? Or just a couple little spits? Clear coating an entire truck... yeah I could see complaining. I did my roof and I had to be VERY tactical to paint when people weren't outside or paying attention. Mike, Thanks for video. I have painted a few vehicles. I striped them down to bare metal and went from there. I am not a car paint guy though. I do know how to spray because I had my own furniture refinishing business for 8 years. I know there is some differences and that is not why I am posting this comment. What the refinishing did was allow me to learn how to spray with all kinds of different guns and caps/tips.
    For the people who say that you can get just a good finish of any kind out of a cheap gun, good luck with that. I had and still do have probably around $5,000 or more just in spray guns. If the professionals could get a good enough spray job out of the cheapies, why would they buy the more expensive guns? I can tell you why.......better finish and speed. If they could, they would. It would save everyone a lot of money.

      Can't argue with what you are saying about the quality of the gun, but many of us who enjoy fooling around with cars, bikes or whatever can't justify spending $400.00 on a gun just to spray clear with. Myself, I haven't painted a car in over 48 years and am getting into a few retirement projects I have picked up over the tears. So how do you get a decent clear spray with a cheaper gun?

    Thanks for the video, here’s my situation of a fence painter, Noobie. Need help with the details.
    I’m finishing 13 30”x48” unfinished butcher block table tops, lots of diff grain patterns in the wood.
    New HF gravity gun, and I’m an anal gun cleaner between attempts , drilled it out to 0.2mm
    Using Varathane gloss Poly reduced 5% with
    Temperature 75-80 deg.
    I’m setting gun pressure with a gun regulator set to 25 lbs
    The fan fan looks good, (even) about 6” wide 8” from surface.
    The last try gave me some ugly orange peal, I’m lost at setting flow, need help.
    Thanks hope I can learn to do this before the 1.5” thick tops are sanded down to 1/5” because of my futile approach of a good finish.

      Yea We used to use a hot plate in the winter on very low. For a cheap price the HF gun is great for the first timer But they dont really last. I have a video on just that. But they also dont spray as fine as the really good guns. I never understood until I got one and now I wont ever use a cheap gun. They just dont work as good. Hey for a cheap first time you can do a decent spray job with HF gun and small compressor better than not painting it.

    Mike: I've done a few garage paintings, and they've turned out pretty good. Of course I have to do put in a bit of elbow grease after to finish the job (wet sanding and buffing).
    I want to do my motorcycle, but I will be air brushing a bit of graphics on it. After the base coats are on, I will be doing some air brushing over the base. It could be days or up to a week before clearing over my base and graphics. Will the clear bite on the base after leaving the base that long? Sanding would be out of the question, due to the careful shadows and blending of my graphics; besides, I might be using a metallic base. Thanx

    • @Mikefngarage
      @Mikefngarage  6 років тому

      you should coat with intercoat clear. House of color makes one. it is a basecoat that is clear. you can sand it before you put urethane over it. you can clear over your hand painted stuff then sand that. yes you are right about your concerns.

    Project: the detached hatch from a 4door honda civic.
    Gun: Harbor Freight - Professional Gun.
    Location: Back yard - OUTSIDE
    Forecast: COLD. Feb/March
    Compressor: 2.5HP 21Gal
    Problem: clearcoat pealed off. Base coat exposed.
    So,... MIKE... what are my odds? Use medium solids clear? and keep in a heated blanket?
    What am I going to run into?
    Let me know. thanks

    Good info. So why not just tell us what to do, not what not to do. "if you are using a 4-1 not a 2-1" OR not a 3-1 or 49-3 or 5-3 ... just tell us. @9:47 in the video. I would love to hear you explain the use of the flow and pressure without telling us what not. Thanks for the info. You are good. Keep the videos coming, just a bit more refined.

      He actually did tell you but he omitted information in order to drill down to the key issue. Clears with higher hardener ratios are usually high solids, which he specifically did not reccomend using this technique on. So he was excluding those for that reason, just not making the connection.

    Very good vid, but a bit of a of a "missinformation" is that you can spray a panel totaly flat. It is actualy impossible since the gun technicaly cant achieve a totaly "flat" finish. There is always some taxture/wavines even on a flat layed hood. Anyways great vid

    • @Mikefngarage

      well Close is what I was talking about. close enough to color sand and buff it totally smooth. If you leave too much peel it is really or even impossible to sand it totally smooth. Just makes really big peel.

      i've been using omni plus the last few years. it flows and lays pretty nice i think. if you do happen to get some dirt its scuffs and buffs pretty nice. used color extra for awhile, it didn't seem to flow well, and hard to get it to lay down. been thinking of trying the Zip, but im pretty happy with the omni plus.

      they dont seem to last too long i agree, like a good gun. devilbiss is about the best in my opinion. the one i have it sprays by itself lol. seems to adjust better than HF. its one of those things that the more you spray the more you learn kinda thing.

    • @Mikefngarage
      @Mikefngarage  7 років тому +1

      True true. tekna prolite a must have for sure just to have a good gun. But the HF 15 spray gun works well for the price. I cant argue that. I have a HF gun for stuff that I dont care about like frame painting gas tank. or squiring the finder wells the machined surface between the tapered tip and nozzle wears out fast and messes up the fan though then trash can it goes. You might want to invest in one of those Sprayit LVLP instead of the HF guns. they are about 50 online. They dont have that tapered fit air cap. Decent design and better spray options than the HF tools gun.

    • @Mikefngarage
      @Mikefngarage  7 років тому

      try the house brand multiclear from Drew carriage paints in montclair ca. Have them ship it to you if needed. The Omni has solvent trap issues when you get runs (turns white). Also doesnt last as long as some others. Had failures with it. I can say you will be impressed with the house brand stuff. Flows like super good high end stuff and buffs like glass. Product I used on that van behind.

    I'm trying to learn how to paint a car and I've got everything down from sand grit to air compressor to base and clear coat and paint gun to dry time ; however I've ran into a new obstacle 50percent of videos basically teach how to wet sand primer with 500 grit to prep for paint and the other 50 percentage of the videos just teach how sanding clear coat is good enough to paint base coat on . What do I do to paint my entire car ? Do I even need primer ? Could someone please let me know .

    • @Mikefngarage
      @Mikefngarage  5 років тому

      primer is not always necessary. If you have good paint but want to repaint then you can sand with 400 to 600 grit and paint over what you have. If the clear coat is delaminated or flaking you will need primer over those areas. 400 is for solid color and 600 is for metallic base coat clear. you can even go to 320 if you are using urethane single stage.

      @Thepurpleguyvr4 6 років тому

      xjs2 the settings are pretty much the same as he says....just if youre putting on normally 2 clear coats....on your last coat, after you spray each panel, while it's still wet, back up to about 6-8 inches away and angle your gun, justttt a little tiny bit and hit each wet panel at about twice the speed your normal coats are....this should give an even, what is called "drop coat, or presentation coat".....only when panel painting though...ex. clear a fender like normal....then drop coat....move to the door, clear as normal, drop coat...move to the qtr...clear as normal, drop coat...etc....hope it helps a little....it did for me

    Really DIY being concerned about neighbors and don’t use high solids clear. Totally disagree. Somewhere in this vide is a point, just get to the point. The VW does look great. Custom painters I know for vehicles use HOK or PPG. Warm the clear, reduce it, use high quality product, open the fan and shoot it. Hey 90% of the time you’ll need to cut and buff it. You’re gonna get dust and nibs in the garage vs the booth. Nobody is shooting single stage anymore its base coat clear coat.

      @BearBudgetgarage 3 роки тому

      I've seen cars 10 -12 years old with failed clearcoat peeling off with factory paint. In many ways the old single stage was better as the clear was all the way thru the color and could be brought back if oxidized, weathered. I am doing my 86 Mustang with acrylic enamel plus and optional coat of acrylic enamel clear. Iwata W 400 for the clear.

      It didn't have any real rust but a couple dents here and there. The door gap had a weird gouge banged in it and they even fixed that!
