Had a shop do a total respray on my truck from hail damage. From the go it looked terrible about 2months later it went dull with very little shine. They soaked the insurance Co. $6700. for the job. A couple of drunk guys in there garage over the weekend could have done a better job......I was pissed.!!!!

Is "orange peel" referring to how much the finish looks like compared to the outside of an orange?

YES, VIVE LA SCIENCE. Mate that is a great and very clear fix. THANK YOU so lets see if I have distilled this right...If its peely then you can.
    * Up the pressure, (but not too much or it will go dry yes?)
    * Get closer (but dont go too slow or it will run)
    * Thin the material ( but not too much or you'll get runs, reduce the gloss, get solvent pop)
    Have I got that right?
Mate the TAFE should be sending their teachers to YOU for "proper" training. Keep up the great work and dont think for a minute that we dont all appreciate it. Cheers

Great vids. One can always learn something by watching and listening. One thing I do find is that a second coat of clear flows out better than the first and a third coat even better again. So while a perfectly flat coat is not possible it is possible to get pretty damn close.Keep up the vids. You obviously know your stuff.

If you get a chance to do the followup one you mentioned, it would be fantastic. If you used an LVLP gun on one side, and the FLG5/SGK on the other, that would be PERFECT (for us without big compressors).

Thanks for your channel. I recently discovered your channel and subscribed after watching a few...and it just keeps on getting better for me as I delve into the watching the plethora of videos you have uploaded.
As many others have said, it is really appreciated the time and effort that you put into your posts. Of course, all the time and the effort means nothing if the quality of the content is not worthy of the time and effort. Your content is very high quality and very worthwhile. Real world applications, problems and solutions. Kudos to you.
This topic reminds me of an incident quite a few years ago when my daughter backed into a car., owned by a young man visiting a neighbour. A very good friend, who is a spray painter, offered to fix the other vehicle, only asking my daughter just for the cost of the materials (at my insistence. He would have done it for free, but I insisted she needed to learn from her mistake. A real world lesson as she was only 18). As a non-spray tech, I thought the young man's car looked nice.
The young male owner who was fresh out of high school and thought he knew everything about the world, including how to spray paint a car.... because his car had recently been resprayed. He proceeded to criticise the quality of the repair work.
Now my friend is an automotive paint rep for a paint distributor and his job was showing paint shops how to paint his company's paint products. He has been in the game since he was 18 (and was mid 50's at that time). It is safe to say he knew his stuff.
What followed was a critique of this young man's criticism of the repair. This dissection included such details as you are demonstrating in this video about the quality of the resultant clearcoat matching the existing clearcoat on the vehicle.
As my friend said "I can easily adjust my repair work to get the finish/quality of the clearcoat, to have less orange peel, but then it will look better than the rest of your (shitty) paint job. By the time my friend was finished the young man realised that the quality of his new full respray was not as good as he first thought it was after all. Gulp. That was real world schooling for the young man who thought he knew everything. LOL
Anyway, thanks again from a new subscriber located in Brisbane, Australia.

heey i`m have almost no orange peel using a technique that i learn on youtube also. U paint whit no reducer at 1 coat, 10% at second, 20% at third, and 40% in the last thin coat just a little bit more than a dropcoat. It makes the dry time a lot longer and this way the paint end looking great.

@@eksine i know this is old, but I spray at a way higher pressure for clear (26-28psi) and decrease my distance by a few inches. Have done multiple full sprays and resprays and all panels came out near glass. My painter teacher taught me to up the pressure for a glass finish. Something about forcing it to atomize at a higher pressure. Never had any orange peel issues since, but it does take getting used to to not cause runs or excessive build up/texture.

    • @eksine
      @eksine 4 роки тому

@@novinnovations4026 I did learn that technique actually, I'm using 29-30 psi and yeah the hard part is first using a test hood and figure out what is the closest distance need to get that right finish. thanks man and hope you have sucess in your career

    • @rob12449
      @rob12449 3 роки тому

yes! I've figured this out too, go thinner on last coats to smooth things out, and also higher pressure helps, I use a cheap acrylic enamel and they recommend 40 psi, which I learned to follow, and also to keep the trigger restricted helps get a fine atomize: fine atomize fine OP coarse atomize coarse OP.

Gunman do u reduce most of your clears to 20%..ive tried that using 80-100 dollar clear coats and because its the cheaper clears it dulls out a bit so i reduce it only around 5% some peel but it shines or more reduced and it dulls, guess that doesnt happen when your using 200-300 dollars clear?

Hi, thanks, I spray wood, mainly pre-cat coloured lacquer which i realise now is easy, recently i had to spray some two part PU gloss paint, really struggled not to get orange peel, normally i'd use my ANI guns which work 'ok' but i couldn't get the fine mist you talk about so today i tried my most expense Deviblis gun, it worked great, i now sort of know the difference between the cheap guns n why i had to pay over £100 for the Deviblis.

As a beginner I'm a little confused, since your final job at the end shows the tip of your gun is often about 15 cm from the work, not 5 cm which you show gives the best result as far as orange peel.... Having had more than my share of runs I feel pretty timid when the gun is so close. Presumably I need to hold the gun closer, stop down the paint, and get a better quality gun. I suppose it is all about understanding your tools through experience.

im in the processor buying the equipment to learn to paint etc..
I know the basics, Mixing paint etc, But i can still never get a answer no matter what videos i watch..
    1. What air pressure is required for all guns? Conventional, HVLP and LVLP?
    2. Does that pressure setting change between different brand paints etc?
Or is it, Once you found the optimum pressure for your certain gun, Do you tend to always spray with it at that pressure?
Reason why im asking for air pressures on all guns, is because im spending a bit of money and buying a range of guns, Find which works best for ME.
So far ive ordered a DevilBiss gun with a TE20 aircap... A HVLP and LVLP gun too.....
I just dont know how to find the right air pressures, without painting a car panel and then finding out it came out horrible lol

    great videos, thanks à lot,
why is the standard given distance 20 cm? is it just to allow large fan specifications ? a friend that teaches painting say he aim for a 30 cm tall pattern, at about 15 cm, and if more why not !!!
what may be the trouble when working near ? Is it then mandatory to paint from bottom up to be sure no drip or "bellies" ?

This is kind of old but I'll still reply incase it can help someone else. If your too close to the panel it doesnt matter how fast you move. You will run make a run. And the further away you are the more dry your gun will spray. It's not mandatory if you start from the bottom or top. Start where ever is most comfortable. In theory it's better to start from the bottom to reduce chances of runs but In my experience (painting at a Lexus dealership in houston TX 6 yrs now) it doesnt make much difference.

It says paint:thinner ratio must be 1:1.2 so that to me says 120% reducer... What am i doing wrong? Im getting terrible orange peel.. like even worse than your first example. Im just a beginner here. Need help please

Gunman great stuff. Question. Is the clearcoat orange peel look reduced if you sand the orange peel out of the basecoat first? If it helps, what grit would you recommend for finishing base coat sanding. Alternatively, would you just not bother with basecoat sanding?? Thanks again for the great vids

Hi Gunman are you sure it’s 5cm as that’s only 2 inches distance you are spraying from the panel. Should it not be 5 inches approx 13 cm from the panel. 2 inches just seems a bit close compared to what I’ve been getting taught.

It's a problem If I dilute clear coat with 40/100 and paint with100/100.If I not dilute the paint or clear coat not comes out of the gun.

What gun would you recommend for 2k primer and 2k base. Won't be needing to apply clear coat. Location UK so cooler/cold spraying temperatures

I love a new color of Mercedes. It is called Blu Cavansite and it is similar to AUDI Blu Estoril. Why do these color are so brilliant and full of gloss? They look like a wet effect. Do they have a special formulation?

Gunman would the humidity effect gloss levels? Im in Melbourne and I find (using HS clear with a fast hardener) I loose gloss in the warmer months. But when its cooler weather it looks great. I need to use the fast hardener because we need to get the jobs out ASAP

Just a simple observation...why in the world would you want to spray anything at less than 15 cm distance? If you do that you will be taking way too long to cover a vehicle and you will fatigue yourself in the process. It's only my opinion but if I had a gun that wouldn't spray better than at least an 8 inch wide swath at 15 cm from a panel I would fire it in the bin...or keep it to lend out to wannabe painters for garage jobs.

just spray as bad as you can with one condition, no runs, no build up
    do 5 coats
and sand with 500 until 2000, wet at higher grit, you can even use 300 for first one if you manage to do a good job in creating very bad orange peel
visualize after each sand (after dry) the depth of orange peel and determine next grit strength
then buffer and polishing substance when there is no more orange peel
    done
lot of hardwork but anyone can do it

here in EU we use alot of UHS clear coats and there is a problem with these kind of jobs when u need to get the right orange peel or i call it texture on the car. this is where the VOC is coming in as a problem for example when you over reduce a paint or clear coat its not legal paint any more because it goes over the VOC rating but who the hell cares anyway right? =) but its pretty easy when you understand how it sprays when you over reduce it then its easy to get the right texture. Warning all colors or clear coats don't work well with over reducing it can cause problems... good video btv!

Learn to paint!!!! Or don't.....knowing how is a waste of time and sure way to put a target on your back. Just go ahead and be a good guy with a big mouth. That seems to work better than any practical ability or knowledge.

I have a question on a special item. I need to paint a 66 Mustang Dash. Using Single stage rat rod black (3:1) and going to mix 25% normal clear (4:1) for durability and to mimic the factory finish. I want it to be very flat so based on what you did in the video what do you recommend for NO orange peel? I would think 20% reduced (both) and 5cm but 20psi seems low...do you recommend that over say a 26 PSI ? THANK You
