For lyrical context, the horse part has another meaning as well. In the 90s, "horse" was slang for heroin, so when the "horse stampedes and rages", he means that the heroin addiction is out of control.

Watching this video makes me realise just how lucky I was to be a teenager when songs like this were being released. There was some really powerful music being written back in those days. Watching someone else's first time listening to it brings me right back to how it was for me. Wonderful times musically! I'd my own battle with alcohol over the intervening years and it nearly killed me but I was very fortunate to seek help. I've been sober now 13 years and getting to watch all these videos again is very poignant for me. There's one song I'd love to see you react to and that's another Skid Row song called 'I Remember You'. Thanks for this.

He is a master of his craft. Check out other songs. You will not be disappointed. This one is my favorite. Thanks for your response. Breaking Down is a really under appreciated gem- it doesn’t have quite the soaring vocals or instrumental impact that some of Skid Row’s other mega ballads have, but it’s got a simmering, controlled energy that makes it sound quite unique among the rest of their catalogue, while still carrying a lot of heart. It’s a grower.

In case nobody else has said it, Sebastian is not the current lead singer of Skid Row (and hasn’t been since 1996). But he was the one who brought them to stardom (and is awesome). Skid Row’s numerous subsequent singers haven’t come close to matching him…until Erik Grönwall, who joined this year. Erik sounds very similar to a young Sebastian and although Sebastian will always be Sebastian and ‘the voice of Skid Row’ in many people’s eyes, Erik does a great job. Skid Row’s new album with him is an excellent return to form too.

That’s incredible to me. Because I always thought the lyrics addressed the darkness of the drug culture in general. I never knew the words were written for a specific individual who struggled with addiction. It gives this song a whole new level, angle and meaning for me.

Excellent reaction! Saw Skid Row in 1993 (I think, not sure of the exact year). They opened up for Guns n Roses and Sebastian Bach blew everyone away...this song was insane live. They performed so well. Axel Rose, from GnR was so drunk that the crowd chanted Skid Row until Sebastian came out and helped sing the remainder of the songs for the next hour. That was in Charolette, NC. Wow, time does fly!

This is the most difficult and poetically heart felt vocal laid to tape in the 90s. Sebastian absolutely brought his vocals to a new level on Slave but this song in particular had myself being a rock singer at that time was going well he just ruined that shit for everyone of us. Its all but impossible to do this live w any seriousness.

Rock and metal can be the canvas to express emotional meanings that other musical genres could hardly do. Frustration at the degeneration of a loved one becomes a true elegy. Thank you for giving you the opportunity to review this song. I found it interesting the transformation of the tone you used at the beginning, (somewhat technical), until the end with the emotional upheaval. Greetings.

I was so moved by this amazing song's theme and your sincere, emotive reaction to it, that it brought me to tears. You should try to discover more of this genre. It's a treasure trove of talent and storytelling. Sub'd. You are amazing. Oh, side note: the reference to horse is a double entendre, as "horse stampedes and rages" is the addict reaching sort of a death cry, and "horse" is also a nickname for heroin.

WOW, the first time hearing skid row… it throws me off hearing that. Maybe I just live in an echo chamber but it’s the music I grew up with and now it’s the Golden Oldies. What’s really crazy is when people never heard of Guns N Roses
