One of the MOST underrated movies of all time.
So dark. As with "Requiem for a Dream," "A Scanner Darkly" put me into a funk for days afterwards.
@Yabobe O'Boyle what’s a snuff film. Tell me more.
So is Waking life , Boyhood and Dazed and confused. Lets not forget about the before sunset, sunrise and midnight. Great director, great casts. ART.
It's defiantly underrated

I loved this movie growing up. One of those movies you love as a kid, but, forget all about for years and get excited all over again when you rediscover it.
If this came out rn everyone would be freaking out with this cast
For real, this was super slept on back in the day, it was a good movie though. Kinda hard to track but still fun
@@ilovestitch I feel like that’s why the marketing really failed. It was really difficult how to choose which way to sell this movie, adult animation was relatively quiet in the 90s to early 2000s but some films did experiment
right? still cant believe what a underdog movie this is with such a cast. weird how things work
I gave you the 666th like 😳
It would be canceled because Alex Jones is in it
God, how expensive would it be to make a sequel with all these stars in 2020? RDJ, Keanu, Ryder and Woody.
The budget back in 2006 was only $8.7 million.
They were stars back in 2006, all well known names. But I get now are probably more expensive since they have been in more big budget movies.
Winona Ryder too
It's not that movies were cheap back then it's just that this particular movie was. I mean that whole budget was probably just the actors paychecks. It's not like the movie has any crazy over the top cgi effects. I mean look at other movies from 2006 they almost all average 100 million or more in budget. Even pirates of the Caribbean from 2003 had a budget of 140 million dollars so this movie was not meant to be top of the line best of everything it was a cheaply made movie but with lots of star power which is what they blew the whole budget on obviously. So making a remake would still cost well under 100 million dollars unless they decide they want more actors or better effects for whatever reason. Either way this movie was cheap then it would still be relatively cheap now. Probably around 20 million to account for the fame of the stars today being greater than it was and them probably wanting more money for their time.
@@ryman1933 Well it was an indie movie, hence the independent company logo at the beginning.
The script was apparently making rounds and RBD was personally interested and wanted to do the movie, so he agreed to be paid the SAG minimum rate to be involved.
A novel written in the 1970s, made into a movie in 2007, based in 2014, and everything the movie covers is very relative to the times we live in, astounding how dystopia works that way

Man a Scanner Darkly was light years ahead of it's time. The actors are phenomenal and it still holds up till this day. Really wish they would have made a sequel or more movies like this.
You should check out Waking Life. It's all rotoscope like this and it's also directed by Linklater.
Wouldn't be allowed today, because it makes you think and it also subverts the narrative that authorities are trustworthy.
@manictiger it could definitely be made today.
You should read the Valis Trilogy by PKD
And the book was written in 1977!
Such a great, underrated movie. I love rotoscope. It’s perfect. It looks like a live-action graphic novel, and it’s surreal and psychedelic, almost feels like you’re on drugs, it makes you feel like the characters with their struggle differentiating reality and a warped perception because of “Substance D.” Most people don’t know how brilliant the story is. It’s very sad, though.
Animated films have really gone downhill in the last 15 years. The CGI animations released today aim for realism (missing the point of the medium), and end up looking a fraction as interesting as this, or the traditionally animated films of the 80s and 90s. It's time for a revival.
brilliant book

@Eugene From Tasmania the fact is they weren't conspiracy theorists. There was proof of it happening. The news outlets already were doing that excessively in the 90's it was only logical.
@Eugene From Tasmania the difference between conspiracy theorists and the people who talked about it happening was that they understood how the internet worked. Trial and error. Most conspiracy theorists look for things to confirm their believes while the scientific method is used to destroy ur theory so it can withstand logic. The Game Was BIG For its time.
If a GTA movie was made, it would have to be done like this.
They filmed the actors then digitally painted over every frame. The technique is called rotoscoping. Disney did it more subtly back when they were using hand drawn animation. It looks cool but there are shots where it looks a little wonky because someone got sloppy. It probably is the same technique as the GTA art.
Tae-Nado it’s rotoscoping
This whole movie has a tangible quality to it. Like a parallel universe just a slip away from reality. A world I'm terrified to visit, yet somehow want to live in. It has a dystopian quality, yet appealing familiarity that gives you a sense of nostalgia from the very beginning. Like a liminal space in movie form. Love it.

Keanu Reaves, Woody Harrelson and RDJ. Nothing can go wrong here. Plus Reaves is the coolest man ever in this film.

I discovered this movie when I was 12. I couldn't comprehend how amazing this movie was at the time. This is a movie everyone should watch once

Now I'm almost 30, I watched Scanner Darkly again and all I can say it's one of the most underrated movies ever, this is pure art.
It’s like this movie is filmed with GTA load screen filter
hahaha

Actually it kinda dose, but this is a artsitic look to it. Because there are alot of spots on the characters to make it artsitic looking. In GTA, well its half.
But in waking life. Same animator as this.

It took me a while to fully appreciate this movie. The story turned me off at first but on repeated viewings, A Scanner Darkly became one of my favourite movies of all time.
This is one of those films you HAVE to see at least twice to even begin to take it all in; the main plot elements don't begin to fit together in one's mind until one has seen the last 15 or so minutes.
Petronius Arbiter II Or read the plot, it brought me to tears.
Why is this movie never talked about, it's incredible.
DeepFried Wat3rMel0n it was about 13 years ago! 😕 ... (where thee hell have you been?)
The best aspect of this film is the subplot. At the end you realize what has really been going on the whole time, how the audience has been unknowingly taken for a ride just as much as Arcter. It's what makes this film so great for multiple viewings. You start picking up on the little dialogue easter eggs scattered throughout. Neither Arcter nor the audience realized Arcter was being conditioned and positioned for one of the most top secret clandestine missions in the country. The real question is will he ever know it?
And there in lies the whole tragedy of the film, “to sacrifice someone without them ever even knowing it”

Underrated?.... Definitely, Brilliant performances and overall a Brilliant film, some people hated the animation but I personally liked it a lot.
This movie was ahead of its time. Have they even made something with the same art style since?
It's interesting to read reactions to this trailer from people who've never heard of the movie. I'm going to assume they are young people. I wonder if local rental stores were still around, if the reaction would be the same. Movie rental stores, especial the independent ones, like libraries, were great places to browse and see older titles. Store employees would curate themed collections to reveal titles one might've not happened upon before or considered renting. I don't know how people connect to movies today that aren't served to them the way they are now. I used to watch trash and gold because of the cover art and short descriptions. It's funny because youtube algorithm is kind of like the old video rental employee.
You should start writing more about that for younger generations. That is a very smart way of thinking and I'm not being ironic here.

The director used the same effect, it's called rotoscope.
The rotoscope is a machine, a technique that allows you to draw or "re" draw movie frames to give it a surreal animation.
Watched the movie in 2012, reading the book now 10 years later and it feels even way more relevant now. Can't wait to see the movie again
It's actually worse today, because it's not just some small-time company, but a two-pronged attack, the CCP pushing Fentanyl through Mexico, while the WEF pushes other stuff through other vectors, including the war against our children, gender confusing them and pumping their heads full of samethink.
The whole world seems to be at war with the US, probably because we're the last bastion of freedom on this god-forsaken planet. There's so few places in the world left, where you can openly criticize the government, and where there's a huge cost and set of risks associated with trying to shut down even just 1 person.
They go after old people, mild-mannered women and gangsters who's most deadly possession is a Hipoint that ftfs on the third round on a good day. These ensure accolades and a Raid they can return home from.
However, if they start going door-to-door at random, they may starting running into the hardcores, and then they won't be returning home after mission. No other country I can think of, allows the citizens that kind of power. So, they want to extinguish this country, its morale, its economy, its people and most of all, its consitution.
It seems like fragmented thought, but it's not. All of this stuff is connected. From the identity politics, to the drugs, to the constant media lies, the CCP balloons, diluting the USD into the ground, etc. Every single action is being taken to try to destroy the U.S. Drugs are just a tiny little facet of that.
Sometimes the CCP just has to fan some flames; sometimes the WEF has to light some.

One of the best films ever! The ending is depressing and dark tho.
They should've released two versions of this. The one with this kind of style and the normal cinematic one.
the "normal" one wouldn't have any vfx
Think it fit the story more this way. It wouldn’t have the bleak and trippy feel to it, if it was live-action
RDJ left post-its with his script written on them all over the set as he knew it would be drawn over later on. So it probably wouldn't look too professional :D
The live action version would be awful, the rotoscope technique they used not only allowed the seamless transitions for the hallucinations, but gave every thing a unreal quality that perfectly matched the plot and story. You just couldn't do that with live action.
