I believe it's supposed to be two taps for Siri/Google Now, one tap is supposed to be music
The Almost Everyday Show - I was gonna say the same thing. I just got mine today and LOVE IT.
It turns out you are right.
Guess i'll wait for the next generation product...
Let us know when you make the discovery
I hope the new one is better, the company that makes them is sure some enterprise. But I will order on amazon to see, as I don't like driving, i'm no voyager. I certainly won't buy the original series one shown in this video.
Finally, it's been wayy too long, but hell does it give you the shivers.
Its on sale today at thinkgeek for 55ish dollars. Glad you made a review thank you. So its kinda crappy but its a combadge that works so its totally worth getting :p sold!
Oooooohhhh hoo hoo! I'm soooooo tempted to get one now! ..... great entertaining enough review.
Love this!! I had no idea this existed
This is way too cool. I want one.
It is pretty cool!
Darn, was hoping to get this for my dad for Christmas, he is a huge fan of the show. He happens to be an engineer (LOL) and wish it came in the different styles, and I also am sad that the quality of the calls are low and that the google now does not work. I guess I'll keep looking to buy something else.
hey bro where can I get the combadge at let me know. I am big star trek fan we have something In common
Hey, that was a great video, very funny and informative, thank you 😊!
will there be one for voyager
LOL, box (and him reading it) say "10ft / 33 meter range" 1:41
Curse you metric countries with your 11x superior radio reception!
xD
best video ever!! lol the next generation... I was waiting for that one.
Love the intro!
Did the tech improve in the end?
It's my dads birthday and I'm broke as a joke but I think im going to have to scrape the bottom of the barrel and try and get this for him because I know he would love this!
Elizabeth Pawlowski did you and de he like it
It's seens they down two version of this star trek comunicator? One of it have complet setences and conversations of sevral peoples of startrek. If am not dreaming...
You have to double tap it to use Siri or Google Now. Don't know if you figured that out or not, but it took me a minute.
I just got this as a gift and it's not great but it's not as bad as Frank is making it out to be. The magnet is pretty good, tap it twice for google now, it's good for listening to map directions.
I didn't feel like I was making it out to be bad. It's just not as good as it should be.
The speaker isn't as good as the one on my phone, galaxy S5, but it allows me to start & stop the audio without digging my phone out of my pocket. That's its only real benefit.
The ThinkGeek video showed her double clicking to talk to Siri
Bonus for Android users users, Google now is voices by Majet Barrett, voice of the computer.
Is there a voyager/ds9 variant?
I was thinking that too. Voyager is my favorite. The only thing I could think of was maybe function and design. Voyager's comm badge design has a gap in the gold part which would expose the inner workings of the badge. This one was convenient because it was covered in NG's design so the inside of the badge wouldn't be exposed.
Find out when the next one comes out.
been me up Scotty
It needs work- sound effects, weak magnet, thinner body etc.. but if that happens ill be first inline. Cool product
Oh man... That thing is soooooo cool.
It is pretty cool! Despite it's flaws. Like I said, I still think it's worth the buy.
I think I'll glue pins to mine.
Good review, though a few questions:
1. Can you double tap the badge to get siri/google?
2. Another review had constant disconnection problems, have you experienced this?
3. does it chirp for no reason throuought the day?
4. Is the call quality really terrible?
Mine is due in Feb, too long to wait :-)
+Paul Latham 1.) As it turns out, double tap does work but ONLY if you have Media audio enabled in the Bluetooth settings for that device.
2.) Mine does disconnect here and there, but not a crazy amount. At least far as I know, because...
3.) ...It DOES chirp by itself sometimes and I believe this MIGHT be what it does when reconnecting to Bluetooth. However I find it chirps for notifications sometimes as well, so it chirps a lot.
4.) The call quality is not good. It would be acceptable if it were at least loud. Interestingly, call volume is extremely quiet. Almost prohibitively so. However, media volume is surprisingly loud. I don't know why.
Still, I'm glad I bought it.
Fametek Massive Audio hello, thank you for replying to my comment.
Turns out my badge is on its way to me now
I look forward to having this awesome little device!
I use Bluetooth devices a lot and call quality can vary, i did suggest this to the other reviewer.
Franks Life thanks buddy for getting back to me!
Let's wait for 7G product
Are you still using it? How's it working in your day to day life?
+Dj Cusmano To be honest, I am not using for every day calls and stuff. It's too quiet for that. If it were louder for calls, I totally would despite the stares it would garner me.
I learned this when I bought mine it has no Bluetooth microphone so you can talk to anybody that calls in which I think was very stupid just to play music and hear the sound not right they could’ve added a microphone
I would toss the magnet and get a normal pin setup to adhesive to the back.
because of the magnet, people that have a pace maker for their heart can not use thib on their shirt near the heart........FYI
omfg i need one
I bought the star trek comm badge which is freaken cool. But the chirp, chirps when it wants about every five minutes kinda a pain.
+Kelvin Jones Hmm. Mine does not do that.
Damn, I was planning on buying one but I'd want it to be of better quality.
YASSS
I want one
the word you were looking for when you said mat and glossy was dielectric
Or "satin".
Good intro... :)
Coming up next - the transporter
haha loved the intro
Thanks! :D
To activate Siri or Google now you need to double tap the button
Perhaps it would be best to wait to buy the next generation of this combadge.
Good idea but I wonder if they need enough people to buy the first generation before deciding to improve.
Alexandra Lopez Yeah, that's always how it is. I personally prefer not to be their beta tester. General rule of thumb with technology is to never buy first generation anything.
With cheap SmartPhones like the DZ09 Smartwatch, I'm thinking: Why didn't anyone build something like that into a Communicator?
IS IT AN IPHONE YOU ARE USING ? THEY DON'T REALLY WORK.
You have to press it 2 times
The future is now old man
Ohhhhhh me likey
Me too. Despite it's limitations, it's pretty cool.
Dick trying make my google home call Lisa. Luckly I dont know a Lisa. 😄
they need a voyager one
+PAUL DREWERY That would be awesome!
They should have made it high quality with a blackberry speaker and sold it for £300
+Steve C I would have paid more for a higher quality product. I think of they'd put a bit more quality into it and sold it for $99 it would still be accessible to non Trek fans.
Very true
"I mean, I can't not like it. It's a Star Trek communicator."
Yep.
way to big. but still nice. I'd rather the metal qmx badges. live long and prosper
Lol kinda cool 😎
So the quality is poor, it doesn't work with Google voice as advertised, and it doesn't have the authentic "sound" when someone is contacting you first.
Just to make sure proper info is out there... It does work perfectly with Google or Siri. You just need to double tap the badge to activate voice control and of course make sure your phone (android) has the voice recognition set up (SIRI is automatic) It also does have the official Chirp noise from the CBS vault so I dont understand why that was said. speaker quality varies per phone, call just like normal cell phone calls, but for a 6mm speaker sounds pretty darn good!!!
"Matte but glossy "
Black but white
Small but large...
George Canvin, Jr. Is, but isn't.
To be honest, I'd rather go for the TOS communicator.
Was it so hard for them to at least make it look like the show design? WTF
It looks good in person. In my opinion.
Doesn't look bad. But the sculpt looks off. Like its not round enough.
Am I the only one who really want to get this to work with Alexa
I dont watch Tele nor Videos nor movies at cinemas. Im not into comercial buy buy buy hipes. Mi Love play guitar is enough for I. Thanks and all the best.
Poor design. With current tech it could be touch sensitive of metal and much smaller/thinner and be only wirelessly chargable too.
This is unwatchable. I'll find another review.
OK.
B's dude, videos good
Lmao I only paid 60 for this not 80
Only an American would find this strange
Too thick, to plasticy, no comparison to the communicator.
In summary, It's a piece of shit. Buy it... smh
To be honest, kind of. It's not entirely a piece of shit, and I still find it very fun to have.
I saw nothing that could justify an $80 pricetag. Just a low end Bluetooth headset inconveniently relocated to the lapel of one's shirt in the shape of something we thought was cool as kids. Anything north of $30 spent on this better off burnt for warmth unless you make $80 an hour...
Sorry if I sound like a Troll. My honest opinion, it's a start but light years away from practicality and worth the money. I can come up with pages of problems including the car seat belt detaching it constantly. Suppose you do loose it, is there a retrieval method similar to, "FitBit" or iphone location. I wouldn't pay twenty bucks for this. My prop communicator that isn't a working telecommunications device stays on my shirt more efficiently. What's funny, someone geek, twerp, nerd and dweebs out there will swear by this product. Additionally, has not the option to attach an ear piece because I for one will be emphatically annoyed listening to a individual conducting a conversation with that thing. This apparatus, failure that it is, will graciously come under the invention of the "Pet Rock". Forgive my negative literature of observation, but..really, give me a break.
Or the Abbrams generation. 👎👎
